  • Hi I'm Theo.
    I play bass, often poorly. I love effects and started this channel as a way to document what I've owned.
    On this channel we look at bass effects pedals, Bass VI, pedal combinations and getting specific tones.
    Go check out my other channel where I focus on using effects designed for guitar on bass:

    I currently own a Squier Bass VI, and I am waiting for a Warmoth VI body and neck, which I'll setup with EMG bass pickups. Can't wait for it to be done and to try it :)

    I have three of them, a Fender Pawn Shop Bass VI, a Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI, and a Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster.
    * The Pawn Shop Bass VI is using the Fender Super 250B6 string set in E-Standard.
    * The Classic Vibe Bass VI and Vintage Modified Baritone Jazzmaster are both using a custom Stringjoy 13-72 set in Drop A.
    In all three cases, I went with the hardtail plate, because I have no use for a vibrato. I am a hardtail guy. Of course, I also went with CTS pots, Switchcraft jack, Mallory capacitor. The Jaguar pickups were replaced with Joe Barden rail humbuckers, and the Jazzmaster pickups were replaced with Joe Barden Jazzmaster humbuckers. In all three, I didn't bother replacing the bridges, because they don't move in the hardtail configuration.
    In general, I am a (hardtail) Jazzmaster guy, so these are totally my thing.

    I just ordered one of these. I have a Schecter Ultra VI and it's my favorite instrument by far. I plan on collecting as many as I can; I also want the Ibanez SRC6

    Add washers into the hole where the spring for the mute is and that’ll up the tension in the spring 😊

    Fender 24-100 Gauge Strings should liven it up

    I contacted fender about the floppy 84 e it comes with. I told them how universal of a complaint it is and how everyone immediately changes the strings. They replied saying they will look into changing the setup, fingers crossed for future bass vi enjoyers

    • @TheoAndHisPedals
      @TheoAndHisPedals  Год назад

      Thats great, i hope they do. I think alot of people dipping their toes into Bass VI get put off with the floppy E and its a pretty significant thing on a bass!

  • @floridamankyle5461

    But a Bass VI through a Bass Amp with low tone and it will get that larger Bass vibe you speak of, a bass amp cuts out the brightness and fluffs the sound to make it more Bass like, my CV Bass VI is unmodified and sounds so fluffy and warm through my Bass Amp.

    • @TheoAndHisPedals
      @TheoAndHisPedals  2 года назад

      Oh definitely, I play through a bass amp live usually. Only had the marshall at home when I shot this video but i still feel that compared to my Precision or Jazz, the VI has a kind of thinner sound, which is one of the things i love about it, but yeah it can definitely hold its own with a good bass amp and EQ.

    did you have to widen the pickup pockets for those wide range pickups? they would have been narrow for the jaguar style pups right?

      oh you bet and i did a bloody awful job of it...fortunately the pickups mount on the pickgard and the pickguard hides the hatchet job i did.

      They should work out great, i'm currently using Ernie Ball 2837 set (its their bass vi set). The lower 90 gague is actually working pretty well for me at the moment. But fender do their Fender Super250 set which goes to 100! Which i've enjoyed in the past.

    Just a note about string gauges, I mention in the video that usually I wouldn't go below a .95 or .100 on the E string, well I've currently got an Ernie Ball bass VI set that has a 90 on the E and i'm quite enjoying the faster feel, the .100 still sounds and feels more solid but I've not had any issues with the Ernie Ball set

      @@joehancock144 sorry for the very late reply! I *think* you could could regular short scale bass strings BUT my concern might be the string thickness at the post ie: will it fit in the machine head. I’m not sure if regular bass strings taper off in the same way as bass vi strings and the Squier uses guitar tuners.

    How’d you do the HSH mod on the black one? Think the SD strat sized humbuckers could get me close to that tone?

    • @TheoAndHisPedals
      @TheoAndHisPedals  8 месяцев назад +1

      I reckon the strat sized HB's would be a much smarter move. I hacked out some routes for the pickups and had a customer pickgard made. The pickguard was the most hassle and cost to be honest, getting the template right took a while and i chose anodised black aluminium, so it cost me way more than the £40 i spent on the pickups.
      I dont think the humbuckers i have in there are particularly special..I belive they were taken out of a slightly older production MIM telecaster deluxe, rather than the fancier and more expensive CuNiFe wide range humbuckers Fender also offer.

    I’m very interested in getting one of these. But the only thing holding me back is the bridge. I don’t want to invested lot of money into it to make it play right. I’m a guitarist wanting to dab with a bass. Should I just buy a cheap bass instead? Any help would be great.

    • @TheoAndHisPedals
      @TheoAndHisPedals  2 года назад +1

      So, the current classic vibe bass vi's use the mustang style bridge and to me it, it's enough of an improvement that upgrading isn't totally necessary BUT I would say that if you need/want a bass, get an actual bass. The VI is versatile but I find it top-heavy tonally, which can really work in alot of situations and it is a really versatile instrument but if you want that deep, thump-in-the-gut bass tone, I find it hard to get out of the VI.
