Cici and Dave are wonderful additions to the Andertons team. And having Dave in a video about basses for guitar players is just perfect.
CiCi is great , she’s full of knowledge. Dave Simpson Trio rule ! Shoutout to Dave and John Joe
If more guitar players tried, they would realise how fun bass can be and it opens up your own playing and sense of Rythm and timing.
This video is a real winner. Queenie and Dave starting to get Lee to relax and be himself, and the enjoyment they get from playing is infectious. And that jam at the end was totally golden. Win!
I love CiCi's smile she is so happy all the time playing bass so cool! nice vid!
Loved experimenting with all these basses :)
Always cool seeing what people will do with a bass VI. Don't see those often enough.
I would like to know what the Boots that you were wearing in the video are...Cheers...
I prefer the Short or standard scale Basses over the bass IV....
@@steveg5475 Heavily modded Killstar boots :) (I cut the tops off)
You are awesome. Love watching you & Dave play together. Your video about how to sound like Tool is stellar. Thank you!
@@DogGuy19 Thank you so much Brian! :)
I love listening to bass players (I tried to learn when I was younger but I didn't have the patience). I enjoy these videos, as a child of the 70's and 80's I did recognise She’s Lost Control when Dave played it 😄
I'm not a bass player, but played around on an Ibanez Mikro bass for a while. Stepped up to a full scale Ibanez Soundgear with active pickups a few years ago. Love the neck radius and tones that are available. Still have them both! A great alternative when you are a guitarist and want to stretch out a bit, or discover an avenue of expression you can't find with guitar. Great crew of presenters, well done Anderton's!
Currently the bass guys are knocking things out of the park! Simply superb (again).
I bought one of these orange classic vibe Squire Mustang basses with the competition stripes from Andertons earlier this year and it is an absolute stunner. The fit and finish it top shelf and it plays beautifully right out of the box. I am a bassist and not a guitar player. Like CiCi, orange is my favourite colour. Great video, keep up the good work. Cheers from Canada.
I play string (double) bass and own a Fender Bass VI and its great. My favorite basses are my Fender Precision, Yamaha ( sometimes overlooked), Ibanez and Ukulele bass as well. All feel different but all sound amazing in their own right.
Awesome! You guys are fun as hell. Thats what its all about. Haven't seen Dave for awhile, great to see him, he's cool. He can break things down so anyone can grasp it.
I got a used J bass a while ago and fell in love with it, so easy and fun to play, sounds more than adequate
Glad to finally see Cici play her Bass VI. I had one for a year and found what I was really looking for was a baritone for my ambient music. However, the bass VI is great for solo work. You have the low and high register represented. In an odd way it’s a great electric instrument for a classical guitarist.
I was about to write that: the VI is more of a baritone guitar than a bass.
Great video! I had an old Epiphone P-bass that I rarely played. I started playing short scale basses a while back and ended up donating the P-bass to the local middle school music program. After getting a bit better at bass I started wanting a full scale again and picked up a Squier Jazz Bass a few months ago.
The videos have had a really fun energy to them lately.
That jam at the end was really cool👍👍
Not that I'm much of a guitarist or bassist, but I picked up a used Epiphone SG0 a couple months ago and I love it.
Mustang. All day, everyday. Every time one of my guitar player friends asks: What bass should I buy? It’s a Mustang every time. Especially for the not particularly heavy music players. Bought one of the JMJ Mustangs coming from mainly playing P’s, fell in love with it, flats on there and thump-a-gogo.
Tried a Mustang Player P/J, not bad, but a lot of neck dive. Lightweight bass tuners do exist (Hipshot), but they aren’t cheap.
This was just so enjoyable. That intro jam by CiCi and Lee was really beautiful and the outro jam with Dave had such a fun vibe to it.
While CiCi shows a small person can certainly handle a full scale bass we ended up buying my wife a Player PJ Mustang bass after her struggling with an extra long 1980s Aria and it's the best choice in my opinion for guitarists and smaller people. Great demo!
Absolutely. Look at Esperanza Spalding or Mohini Dey. They are both tiny but still among the best bass players out there playing full sized instruments.
Cici’s shoes are 20% her total mass 😁 Rock on folks!
I recently decided to pickup a bass and got the Mini P bass in red. Love it, it works great for me!
I picked-up a Squire classic-vibe P-bass when I first got to L.A. for my project-studio. Surf-green … maple-board with black block inlays. It’s very handsome and play/sounds great after my guy set it up.
As a guitarist I found my perfect bass. The Squier mini P-Bass, which fits in my guitar gig bag. I love it and I've played two shows with it.
The Bass VI! I've always wanted one. The Beatles used one anytime a right hander needed to play bass. However this thing to me screams Robert Smith of the Cure. He used it more like a guitar to great effect.
It wasn't the only right-handed bass they used (George played a Burns in the Paperback Writer/Rain sessions and a Jazz Bass on Abbey Road)
Joe Perry also used one to record Back In The Saddle from Aerosmith’s Rocks album, Jack Bruce also played one on the first Cream album as well as John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin (and regarding a lesser-known player, Eric Haydock of The Hollies)
Dig the ending jam!
I've been playing guitar for 30 years, finally bought my first Bass, a Spector Performer 4 , I can't say enough great things about this Bass, absolutely a beast! Honestly didn't care for anything else I tried over the years and picked up the Spector Performer and had to have it.
I love my bass VI. Jack Bruce used one for the first album and shows with The Cream. It is a great bass guitar for a guitarist. Use mine all the time when working on bass parts and recording.
Where's Nathan?
Epic end jam!
My, >ahem< "studio" is pretty cramped, just enough space for to play guitar, so when I got a bass it had to be a smaller short scale, and I have to say the Jackson JS1X is just way more badass for it's size and price than it has any right to be. Also perfect for any 80s lovers out there.
Dave’s take was interesting.
Good video.
I’ve always been a guitarist first and a bassist second. However, have played bass in a few bands over the years. But it was guitar I started on.
My first bass was a P Bass I bought off a school mate back in the early 80’s. It wasn’t the best tbh. It was dreadfully set up & didn’t know what I do now about how to maintain and set up instruments. So understandably didn’t keep it that long. The next bass but the first proper foray into the world of bass was a lovely Squier Standard Jazz Bass. Nice neck, logical pick-up and control layout. Had that bass for years served me well. Never considered short scale of Six string basses. Have owned 5 string basses over the years which never really jelled with. Tried a Baritone which is sort of like the Bass VI but again like 5 string never really jelled with. Recently bought a couple of PBasses and love them. Of course I also replaced the lovely Jazz I used to own with a modern version. And it’s still so familiar. My recommendation would be try P Bass, try Jazz Bass. And go with which ever suits. For me I never tried to play a bass like a guitar. Playing bass lines was the obvious choice when faced with 34” scale lengths.
Would I buy a short scale. Of course. Hofner 500/1 or a fender short scale might be an option Jaguar or Mustang would be options.
I do tend to rotate through Acoustic to Electric, to Bass and Mandolin, then back again as the whim takes me. Will settle on one or the other for a while.
Think we all have different experiences, expectations and takes upon things.
I know when I have my Bass head on I zone in very rapidly on the lines in songs. Do wonder whether other zone in, in this fashion.
For anyone interested in the topic, maybe also check out IBANEZ TALMAN TMB30 or TMB35. They're my favorit as a guitar player 🤘
For reasons that are beyond me, they've ignored the TMB30 in every short scale video they've done.
Got given an 80's, I think, Maya single pickup precision type bass many years ago. A set up, a soldering repair to the pickup, good as gold and sounds great. Luckily I can do the repairs myself so bonus. Got again a 12 string Washburn acoustic with 6 strings on it for free. Again setup good useful guitar.
( as a guitarist ) I recently bought the Sterling Stingray SS-4 and I absolutely Love it. ( fit, finish sound & playability are fantastic ). I've been learning Motown, Reggae and Funk basslines = so much fun. Got the Fender Rumble 100 Amp - too. oNe LoVe from NYC
stick to only guitars mike
This was awesome. Now I want to see a "guitars for bassists" video, where Cici and Lee play guitars!
I have been playing my bass, trying to use my fingers instead of a pick, and have rediscovered the pain I felt in my fingers when I first started playing guitar. Only in my right freaking hand! Youch!
Since no one mentioned it, Joey DiMaio of Manowar used an 8 string picolo bass for most of their career, got a huge variety of sound from it including a huge metal distortion and almost acoustic cleans. So, Lee get us a couple of picolos one day!
I’m a guitar player and a bass player. Learning to play the bass is invaluable as a musician, you get a much better sense of rhythm and time. Been said that, rather than looking for basses for guitarist you must focus in learning to play it as a whole different instrument, cause that’s what it is. Even a Monkey can play roots, actually playing the bass it’s a whole different beast. When I really picked the bass I spent 6 years gigging exclusively as a bass player. Give the instrument time and respect, it’s a gorgeous thing
I played a bunch and in my opinion a Jazz bass is the best place to start (Player Plus is where I landed cause of the feel on the neck...rolled a bit and flatter radius felt good)
I've been a guitar player for 50 years, but occasionally like to dabble with bass.
What you soon realise on switching over, is that it is a completely different instrument, which requires a completely different mindset and set of skills.
It's akin to moving from clarinet to trumpet.
Sure...you can play it like a guitar, but it will sound too "busy", and just plain wrong.
It isn't the bass job to be "busy".
It is much more akin to playing the drums on strings.
Less is more.
I've settled on 5 string bass, purely because of the use of two octaves across the fretboard, and the access to lower notes.
I've also settled on a pure wood finish, neck thru design, and active pick-ups.
Just my choice.
The only downside of 5 string is the difficulty in playing slap, but I am pretty tired of listening to that tbh, and hearing a good fingerstyle player, to me, is much more fulfilling.
Bernard Edwards comes to mind.
Just my twopennorth...☺️👍
I bought a Squier jaguar short scale bass, naively thinking I would kill on it! Wrong! It's a whole different technique , very percussive, tons of ghost notes, slapping (not great on a short scale). Also made me appreciate drummers so much more.
First of all, excellent video, thank you. I always enjoy watching CiCi and Dave play together, doesn't matter what or where. Secondly, as a long time guitar player, I bought my first bass several years ago, I opted for the Hofner violin (Beatle) bass. I love it, very light, shorter scale, it was very easy for me to pickup and play. My second bass is a Fender jazz bass, which I honestly don't play very much, it's a struggle for me. And Santa just brought me a Squier bass vi, it has been a delight. Tons of fun, picked it up & felt comfortable really quickly. Plugging in a Big Muff fuzz or distortion like a RAT and riffing is a blast.
Ref the tremolo on a bass, Mark King, if you can acknowledge him in Nathan's absence, has a Jaydee bass (the Starchild bass) which has one. He has used it on a recent tour.
Ahh that overdriven Bass VI sound, fantastic!
Good question. Not so much about the stepping stone transition, but personally I find it more difficult to adapt to playing a Les Paul rather than my usual go to six string a Strat, than switching from my Strat to my P bass.
When I moved to Bass as a guitar player, I actually got an Ibanez SR with a very thin neck, which felt very guitar like. Even though it sounded okay, I think if you really want to get into bass (and not just use it for fun occasionally), it can be a bit dangerous as it really spoiled my technique - took a while to get it right after getting a bass with a normal sized neck.
That outro jam was fun.
As a drummer who started playing guitar who then started getting some basses, I've ended up the following:
- White Squier Bass VI. I put a Staytrem bridge and locking fender trem plate and black pickguard.
- Candy Apple Red 30" Squier Short Scale Jaguar PJ bass. I put DiMarzio Area PJ set in. Hipshot Kickass bridge. Hipshot ultralite tuners with the extender drop d tuner and a black pearloid pickguard. Changed the stock VVT wiring to V/Blend/T wiring with blend knob that doesn't have the volume drop in the middle.
- Ibanez 28" Mikro. Left stock.
- Metallic Orange 32" Squier Jaguar H bass. Just arrived today, not sure if I'll leave it stock or not.
I'd like to get an Ibanez SRC6. Those things look so good. The only downside to short scale basses are the lack of string selection. You can order custom gages from places like String Joy, but if you're only able to get packs from Ernie Ball or D'Addario, you'll be stuck with only a couple of choices.
It's a shame they dropped that short scale Jaguar, I would gave chosen that over the single pickup Mustang they replaced it with.
@@deaddoll1361 Yeah. It's weird too because the brought back the PJ Jag but in a 32" scale. If you're lucky you can find a used one but usually at a mark up.
Bought myself a Jaguar VM SS a while back. Really love that short scale. Do kinda want a Bass VI for some Cure feels
As a guitar player, my favorite bass is the P-bass. Just the single pickup, fat neck, standard P-bass. Because it feels so different to a guitar and it's difficult to play compared to other basses I have owned. When I play bass, I want to play BASS. I just love it. Also as a side note : yes, playing bass as a guitarist makes you look at song structure and "focal points" in a song in a different way. Highly recommend.
For anyone who doesn't know they've changed their band name to Red Giant and are currently working on an album
I’m a bass player who also plays guitar. My recommendation would be an Ibanez. If you’re just starting off playing bass as a guitarist Ibanez do some brilliant priced options. So easy and so fun to play
Kahler still makes the Tremolo bridges for 4 & 5 string basses. And they do work.
As guitarist I found short scale to be perfect (tried a P-bass, too big, tried a medium scale Squier P/J, didn’t really like it), but got a Hofner 500/2 “Club”, and it was great! Bass VI is an interesting mix of both too. Another one to check if you can afford it is the Gibson Les Paul DC junior. It’s lightweight, but really thumps.
just stick to 6 strings joey
I bought a Cort PJ Action open pore bass a couple of years ago and it has been a joy to play it since day one. Except for the plastic "chrome" knobs and the laughable bridge pick-up. But I love it so much!
Cort basses have the best necks!
Props for the joy Division riff
They might need to bring back Lee’s Yeah Jar
My first electric bass was the beginner-grade Epiphone version of the P-bass; I bought it in 1996. Despite having little hands that already had become accustomed to the scale of the Stratocaster, I don’t think I did half bad playing that sucker. I might’ve preferred getting a Bass Six, especially for all it can do that a standard bass can’t and also considering how people who drafted me into the bass chair later tried talking me into playing with more low end and less high end (and less “flash”). I couldn’t explain to them that it was bad enough that I wasn’t allowed to choose which instrument I had to play; I also couldn’t choose how I got to play it.
I have got a Squier Bass Six today, and I haven’t done too badly at playing it with my fingertips. I depend on a hybrid of bass-playing technique and the classical guitar technique I was taught in 2003. The string spacing is occasionally problematic, but I try not to let it stop me.
Somehow when I have an odd question such as this, there’s an Andertons video for that 🤘🏻
More Bass VI content!!!
I love my Bass VI’s, they’re so versatile and you can stick some lighter strings on and tune them up into a Baritone if you want!
Brilliant
As a bass player, I would love to see a comparison between a 30" bass, a bass vi and a baritone guitar.
Fling in a piccolo bass too!
I'm not a big pedal guy but somehow I feel that giveaway clone should be mine!
Wow that Squier 6 looks ENORMOUS on Cici
I was hoping to see the Sire Marcus Miller sort scale. I may be a guitarist but the ideal is to not just have a comfortable neck to play but as close as I can get to get a very Fender P & Jazz sound.
as a guitar player who also owned a Bass IV I tend towards brighter sounding basses: Jazz and Stingrays. One day I'll own a Warwick Corvet.
I'm a guitarist who Agree's = my 2 fav's Jazz & Stingray.
I'm a guitarist and I would like to get a bass so this will be fun. I'm left handed so that makes it a bit more difficult.
BY FAR, the best bass for a guitarist is the Bass VI. I literally don't need to change anything about the way I play. I have played so many gigs with my Bass VI. I highly recommend.
Better yet, everything Classic Vibe is perfect right out of the box, so I jumped on the Classic Vibe Bass VI.
I recently got a 32” scale bass and it’s a great compromise between the long and short. Short scales basses can be very boomy but the medium scale balances out very nicely.
Squier has a Mini P Bass that's great for the money. Just needs a heavier bridge to reduce neck dive.
If you finger pick guitar it would be very interesting to hear the lower register of fender guitar tone, I think I'm buying one.
I've found with my bass VI it sounds better with the thicker gauge strings.
It can be used as a bass but it can be a bit tricky .
As a bassist, I can play guitar but I've gotten rid my few guitars and just kept my Bass VI and Baritone ( and Basses 😊)
I'm a guitarist going to bass and for me I did it the hard way with a fretless
I Sooooo loved the vibe of this episode! Presenters are so upbeat, the topic is fun and interesting, excellent time spent! :)
And in 26 video they played only 3 minutes, shitty episode
I’m on the guitar slinger side, but can also play bass. Just like any modern stringed instrument, it all begins with the neck. Either it feels right or it doesn’t.
Oscar I had to go 1.5 neck tightening after upgrading to Labelle strings plus lower bridge 7 turns both sides
I'm a guitarist, that's just got a Bass, completely different animal. I had lessons when i was 10 year's old, on a Bass and i quickly converted to the guitar.... I am 58 year's old.... I bought a 5 string Marcus Miller, Sire V7, weighs an absolute ton, I want to use just me finger's and not a plecky. Bass guitarist's have definitely got my admiration, I really enjoy your Bass videos. Regards Charlie.
Thanks, I look forward to receiving it.🖐️😬
@@charliepayne9248 you know its a scam right?
@@DiggingFrance how do you know?
@@charliepayne9248 its all over RUclips, many channel's have put up warnings. Do not give them money for postage and especially don't give any bank or card details!
@@DiggingFrance okay thanks for the heads up, regards Charlie.
Lot's of very accomplished bass players have used the Fender VI....check out Ray Babbington in Soft Machine in the '70's for an example.
It depends. Do you think of a bass as "just a big guitar with thicker strings" or as a separate instrument?
It’s what they like me I have a Razorback bass from 2007 is my favorite
You forgot the Sire v3 ! One of the cheapest bass but still good quality. And if I am not wrong, one of the best seller. I am a guitarist and I chose the v3 because the neck is slim and narrow, the lenght does't bother me much, but the largest of a bass neck does. The Sire feels just like a big fat guitar to me than any other bass.
I think Cici should think about getting one of those Mustang basses - it was the only one that didn't look huge next to her. Also I think that ending jam linup would be James Hetfields worst nightmare as a backing band.
I love my Jerry Jones 30" scale. It's the same as a Danelectro but better. And recently I've learned a Danelectro baritone is also 30". So it might be a more lightweight alternative to a Bass VI
Hello...I would like t know what the Boots that Cici is waring are...Cheers...
I prefer the Short or standard scale Basses over the bass IV....
I’ve always played bass and guitar.
My first bass was a Hohner short scale. Then I bought a P-Bass. I struggled more with changing basses than going from guitar to bass
If you play guitar and want a bass- buy a standard scale bass. It’s a totally different instrument and should be learnt as such.
Having said that , short scale basses are so much fun.
A Medium Scale bass guitar is a good way to go, as well.
The lower 4 strings on a guitar have the same notes as a normal 4 string bass. An experienced guitar player can use this to their advantage.
Of course the techniques of how to pluck and pick the strings are different but with a little practice it becomes a normal thing and soon your playing bass.
Also it should be nited that tuning is easier and if you have a full 24 frets (like that Ibanez) the entire octave repeats, which is great for composition.
You’ll note that the Beatles John , George used it in let it be ‘Get back’
Can you do this video but the other way round?? best guitars for bassists??
Love a mustang!
But tbh the best bass for guitarists is probably just a standard 34” 4 string. It’s not a guitar, you’re not playing a guitar now, just sever the mental link between the two and hop on the rhythm train.
When I pickup a guitar I don’t need a special gateway guitar, I just pickup my tele usually and play.
As a guitar player, my biggest issue when playing a bass is that I maintain fingernails on my right hand for playing fingerstyle with nylon string and acoustic guitars. When I play bass those fingernails make an annoying noise, get in the way, and can get damaged. I'm not sure what the best work-around for this might be.
You guys should demo the G&L Fallout Bass. Prob the best short scale on the market.
Dave you sound like Rory playing bass... :)
I would like a mustang in British racing green with a yellow stripe and tort scratchplate.
What size strings does a Bass VI use?
That video ended in an unexpected and wholesome way
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass for this guitar player😊
For me the Bass VI is Placebo (The Crawl, Burger Queen, Pure Morning ...) but also Deftones (6 of the 11 songs on Gore).
Yes!!!
