  • Fans of 80s goth rock, rejoice! Or, y’know, whatever it is you do instead of rejoicing. I’ve got a black Bass VI on the bench today, and I can’t wait to show you how great it sounds… just as soon as I can get it to make a sound at all.
This is the first of what I hope will be an ongoing series of guitar repair and setup videos, so throw a like on it if you wanna see more, and drop a comment if you have any lingering questions.
    Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

I dont want to come off as rude, but when you have the bass setup with the points of contact being the body and the top of the head, it creates a lot of pressure on the neckjoint, in my experience it has caused chips in the neck finish. Hope my unsolicited advice is useful!

Not rude at all, but I much prefer to place my neck support over by the headstock end. I have tried it closer to the body, and I found the instrument was too prone to moving around while working on it. Of course, pressure cracks in the finish at the corners of the neck pocket are quite common, so I take your point. I suppose really, the best solution would be to use multiple neck rests.

How can I get my bass VI to sounds much more like your home studio test tones. I'm playing through a Boss GT 6 through a vintage 1980 model JC120
I would love any tips on
settlings for amp/ Boss GT effects / amp eq , Bass VI switches because the sound you are getting is why bought by bass VI.
    Thanks

Honestly, what I would do if I had your setup is probably just take out the GT6! The Roland Jazz Chorus is kind of the sound I was trying to replicate with my modelling amp. I did add a delay, but otherwise it was just a case of trying to recreate the washy, dreamy sound of the JC120's reverb and chorus combo. It's the classic post-punk amp.

with those strings do you find the low e to be ok sounding and not overly loose?

Yeah, the D’Addario set felt great. With a Bass VI, you kinda have to get used to the fact that it’s not going to feel like either a bass or a guitar, but the low E should be at sufficient tension to hold its intonation and sound out properly. If yours isn’t doing that, I’d recommend dropping it in to a tech to assess.

Oh thanks! That's a track my last band, Pale Rider, recorded shortly before we split. We never did release it, but I thought it was a cool track so I figured this was one way to share it with the world. Glad you liked it!
