      The neck on the Jaguar is sweet. Slap some oil on the board, and some Fast Fret, and it plays even better. Has a Fender Japan vibe. I have the sunburst model, and it’s very good looking guitar. It’s worth it’s retailing price, and a deal at used prices.

    I got a Bass VI at the beginning of quarantine too. Here are a couple tips to get the most out of yours: put on some Labella flatwound strings, take out the trem and put in a Jazzmaster/Jaguar hardtail plate, and if you want more low end put it through a bass amp on the middle pickup to get kind of a P bass sound. I keep mine tuned to Drop D and I don’t run into tuning issues with the Labella Deep Talkin’ Flats.

    • @bryantwalley
      @bryantwalley 4 года назад +8

      The very reason I have not bought the Bass VI is because it did not come with a hardtail. For the price it should come with a hardtail.

      Harley Benton has a TOM-Stop version of the Bass VI, if you don't mind having a Strat 5-way selector rather than the dip switch panel.

    • @ErikJensenDetroit
      @ErikJensenDetroit 4 года назад +18

      It's funny, most of the reason I bought the Squier instead of the Schecter Hellcat VI was due to it having a vibrato. I've used it pretty heavily, and it always stays in tune all stock with Kalium 24-106 rounds.

    • @Khonichev
      @Khonichev 4 года назад +15

      Haha, I bought a CV Bass VI in February too and would disagree.
      First of all, I found the lower tension of the standard 24-84 gauge it came with very comfortable so swapped the stock ones for D'addario round-wound 24-84s, instead of going for fatter LaBellas. Second, I swapped the stock bridge for Staytrem's wide one so that the low E could be intonated properly. And I completely don't understand the gripes about vibrato - it's amazing to do wobbly stuff with low notes and chords, the sound is really special.
      And this is what it boils down to for me: why would anyone want to make a normal bass guitar out of a Bass VI? It's a unique instrument with unique features and possibility for unique and weird sounds. If someone wants a good old bass guitar she should go and just buy a normal bass guitar, not the Bass VI!

      What that proves, Daniel Bunge, good sir... Is that, just like ourselves, each guitar is an individual. Reviews can only speak to so much - generalizations are always extremely broad. It kind of.. appals me that so many ppl just order a guitar online and hope for the best! One should ALWAYS pick the best player out of a bunch; though I understand, in our world of lockdowns etc, we all might have to play the 6-string lottery some day.
      Consistency has come on so much in the last 20 years, but still, each guitar is individual. Some just are... and some just aint, am pleased for you that you found a proper blaster at the 2nd hand store - I myself have thrived upon such finds!
      Hope this day finds you well - happy strums, from the UK

I got the same Jag last week (it's an ISS) and it has the subpar frets. Have a 2019 Fiesta Red, 50's CV (ICS) and the frets are actually finished slightly better than two Fenders I have.

    I’m another one who bought a Bass VI at the beginning of quarantine... Mirroring the other comments here: it really does improve the sound and playability (especially of that low E) to throw on some LaBella flatwounds or StringJoy Bass VI strings. Be sure you’re ordering strings made especially for the Bass VI, or at least strings that will be long enough to actually fit! Several strings I looked at would not have been long enough what with the bridge and scale-length yada yada. Overall I’ve been extremely happy with my purchase and suggest you buy one as well! Probably going to get one of the Classic vibe Starcasters soon too ;D Great video as always good sir, keep it up!

    Cool video. The best grab and go is the Jaguar. Now a Bass VI is a different beast all together. I play guitar and I play bass and it's neither. Honestly I would point out well known users like Robert Smith of the Cure as to what these can do. Honestly if you picked up a Bass VI and do a "Shoegaze Affordaboard Squire Bass VI board" you would get wayyy more out of it. I would suggest running the Bass VI through a guitar amp with ten inch speakers that have been replaced with bass speakers (guitar speakers will eventually give up the ghost on bass and bass like guitars) or I bet a keyboard amp would work well. I use a Peavey KB100 for my bass (it was free and I would easily put it in my favorite top five bass amps that I have played through) and those keyboard amps will show it love all day long.
    I will point out that a Bass VI is sonically stepping mainly on the bass player's and the keyboardist's sonic toes in a band. Not as much on a guitar player's as you might expect. Also slide would be interesting with it paired up with a spacey echo!😎👍✨✨

      NO NEED TO CHANGE YOUR STRINGS TO FLATWOUNDS! Why limit your choices? Roundwounds can be bright and interesting yet if you dial your tone back and slap the neck pickup on... then you get the flat James Jamerson sound all day long! Change your pickup settings and brighten your tone and you get something completely different! Bright and grindy sounds with dead flub if you wish! Flatwounds give you one choice. I want more! Where does it say that bassists have to sit in the background? We can drive the music while sitting in the pocket. That's all well and good. John Entwistle, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire and Billy Sheehan, they give us a template that makes us a lead instrument all our own! Why should the guitar have all the fun? I started out on piano. In 1981 I had the privilege to see Rush, Moving Pictures Tour. I became a bassist the following week. I wasn't a failed guitarist who was relegated into playing bass. I started playing the guitar about 5 years later. The bass and keys were my voice. I wasn't about to let the guitarist have all the fun!

    If you get the bass vi I recommend flipping the bridge around until you can get a wider bridge as it helps with intonation on the low e. It has become my favourite instrument to play though

      I tend to use it through a guitar amp with the strangle switch engaged with a flange or chorus for cure tones myself.

    • @ErikJensenDetroit
      @ErikJensenDetroit 4 года назад +1

      When I first got it I flipped the bridge, but a few months later my tech flipped it back and clipped a few coils off the spring on the low E saddle. Either way works, though. I've had mine since they first came out, and I use it almost exclusively now. I even used it instead of my Jazz Bass when I was in a band in Hollywood, and I'm putting a band together right now where I'll be using as a lead instrument. I run both a bass amp and a guitar amp and split it in stereo after my pedal board with an EQ pedal for the guitar amp side to roll off some of the low bass. It sounds huge!

    When I saw you were comparing offsets, I was expecting something like a Jaguar vs a Jazzmaster vs a Mustang, not 3 guitars so completely different, haha. Can the Bass VI even really be considered a guitar? 😁

      Harley Benton's version is pretty rad. It uses a traditional strat style blade pickup selector, and had a hard tail instead of a trem. I really dig mine.

  • @markferguson3745
    @markferguson3745 2 года назад

    I've owned all the above, and the Jag is the keeper.
    I built a baritone Tele, and will say that the pickups and wiring make or break a baritone.The range that I can get out of mine far exceeds the Squier.
    The Starcaster is cool with the original Wide Range Humbuckers, - which are much different than the inexpensive re issues.It has a semi unique feel and sound,- but I'd just go with a Tele.
    The Jaguar is the unique, superior, design amongst the off sets.The short scale and switching system are the bomb, and personally, not a fan of the Squier standard JM necks.The 60th Aniv necks, bound and block inlaid , are the best JM necks outside the American's.
    The Squier Bass 6 isn't playable, and when compared to the Fender, you can see where it went wrong.To work well, the tolerances, set ups, and parts quality ,need to be spot on.Too bad because it's a legit, and fun, concept.

    I had one of those Bass VIs for a short while. I found it was not as easy to play bass as on a four string, and I have a baritone (Eastwood Sidejack), so I sold it for what I paid. I enjoyed owning it for the short time I did. It's about as good-looking as any guitar ever. They did the sunburst just right! I liked the tone controls a lot - they should make a guitar version. Mine didn't have a whammy bar (and you know, it is NOT a tremolo) and that's just as well, as you saw, a wiggle stick on a bass doesn't make much sense.

      they basically did make a guitar version with the Cyclone II, just has no strangle switch. but 3 jag-style pickups, on/off switches for each, an odd scale for fender (24.75"), extremely beefy body. it's actually technically what kurt cobain designed after he hated the jag-stang and sent fender new specs, but because of estate disputes when the Cyclone came out, they couldn't legally tie his name to it (and thank god, or it might've been $2k instead of $700)

    I viewed the review of the Squier Jaguar with great interest. I purchased one a few months ago and it was HORRIBLE. Everything you could image could be bad, was. Would not stay in tune, poorly cut nut, many buzzes and rattles, etc. Yeah, I know these issues could have been addressed with a good set up, but didn't want to spend at least $100.00 on a $399.00 guitar. I'm really surprised that this one played and sounded so good right out of the box. I guess I got a lemon. Returned mine after a week. Who knows, maybe I'll try another down the road....

    I've had the Squier VM Bass VI since it was released in 2013(?), and it has become my primary instrument. The stock strings are terrible, and the low E is floppy. I originally tried a set of LaBella flats, but later switched to a set of 24-106 Kalium roundwounds and haven't looked back. I thought I'd have to modify a bunch of stuff, but I haven't felt the need to change anything. I had to clip a few coils of the spring on the low E saddle to get it to intonate (my tech might have cut the screw a little bit for that saddle as well, but I don't remember), and otherwise it's been nothing but string changes and the occasional truss rod adjustment. I've used the trem heavily and it has stayed in tune throughout. I love it, and even if I could afford to get a Custom Shop version, I wouldn't get rid of the Squier.

      It seems that your experience mirrors most from what I've heard. Ditch the trem for a Staytrem or Mastery, put on LaBella flatwounds, shim the neck and maybe even flip the bridge.

    • @ErikJensenDetroit
      @ErikJensenDetroit 4 года назад

      @@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885 The only reason I'd swap the bridge would be if I just have $200 that I can't find another use for. The stock bridge intonates fine if cut a few coils or flip it, and tuning has been rock solid for me. My set of LaBellas were bad and would not intonate no matter what I did, but my experience with Kaliums has been excellent. I thought I wanted flats, but then I discovered that Robert Smith and Peter Hook both use rounds and get the sounds I'm looking for, so I've stuck with rounds from Kalium.

    I have both a Squier CV Starcaster and a Bass VI. Love them both. The bass is a pain to get set up properly though. Lot of luthier work and patience will get you there. Don't buy a Bass VI thinking you can just start playing it and it has the proper intonation out of the box. I still highly recommend it, but just be advised you'll have some work ahead of you. I did an Instructable on it a few years back (www.instructables.com/id/Fender-Squier-Bass-VI-Fixing-tone-tuning-and-inton/). But there are other guides/videos about these as well that are very good.
