Great video, I just bought a second gen Mini! Tip: Sometimes online when you are looking for a Mini, the photos are too low resolution to read the year it was made. If it has the capacity written on the back, it's a second gen. If it's not written on the back, it's a first gen. The capacity is much easier to see, so even in a low resolution photo you can tell if it has the capacity written or not.

Thank you so much for this video! I've purchased a good used mini 2. gen, replaced the battery and exchanged the micro drive with a 64 gb micro SD card.
Hi Dankpods, After watching your channel I thought I'd do it myself. I took a risk and modded my 30gb 5.5gen ipod and put 448gb in it (which for some reason is 416gb in apple maths) . My library is only 18,200 tracks but 13,500 of them are large ALAC files from my CD collection so that's about 350gb, the rest are mp3s but everything has artwork. My ipod could cope with all 350gb of my alac files but started having trouble with all the mp3s as well and it didn't like showing album artwork unless it was rebooted after syncing. It maxed out at around 17,000 tracks with a few issues. So I wondered if I could make it all work perfectly. Luckily I managed to find a cheap 80gb 5.5gen, I took the back cover and front cover off my 30gb (I thought I'd use my front cover as I know where that's been), got a new battery and combined it all together. So now I have a monster slimline 448gb 5.5gen ipod that works like a dream, it'll even play the few old music videos I have and it has 30gb of space left over. And yes it shuffles. Thanks for the inspiration.
9:34 I can't find the people that throw these away on eBay. The cheapest ones going are iPod Shuffle, the older 1GB one, and 2nd gen iPod nanos with a faulty backlight or/and with a f-ed battery. And the iPod mini's that are 2nd gen and are in working condition are all either pink or cost 100£. The 1st gens are cheap though, a green one is like 15£, though still more costly than the 4th gen iPod touch I got for 7.50£ (without shipping).
Personally I prefer the aluminium of the 7th gen The U2 ones are cool too, with the black back and the red on the front, or the gold. It's damn slick looking.
Me: Wow, this would be really cool to be my first electronics mod and to have a dedicated music player Me: *goes on ebay to find they're now like 30 bucks each for a meh condition one* Me: *looks at video date and realises this video probably made the prices go up* Me: *catches the sadds*
@@snughug1181 let me know how that goes just orders myself a first gen but the storage is awful so I’ll need to mod it but it’s stated it only works on 2nd gens.
I love my Mini. Sounds great and feels the best to hold out of all of my iPods. Something about that round casing, it just feels like it was made to be held.
1st/2nd iPod gen can actually go to 40GB with a 4th Gen “04” HDD... I’ve done a video on that, I also just finished a 128GB 3rd Gen (it’s a pain to setup and use but works) and the 4th gen can go up to 256GB with no issues... I agree though that the Mini is the best, my daily is a 128GB I’ve had since 2013 and I’m getting ready to upgrade it to 256GB myself
I’ll definitely give the mini a consideration! I just got a 4th Gen and I plan to modify it with a CF card adapter. It isn’t the same fancy kind of adapter sold by iFlash, but maybe someday if I get a nicer iPod I’ll get an iFlash board. For now though, if this mod works I’ll have an iPod to use in my car as a dedicated music hub.
Honestly, the Minis are probably my favorite. Best compromise between the Nano and the full-size bois with none of the drawbacks, like the Nanos battery/screen issues over time. When you consider the modding potential, it's amazing how cheap they are to find. Maybe I'm biased because my first iPod back in ye olden days was a first gen puke green Mini.
I have owned a blue 2nd gen ipod mini for as long as I can remember, thanks to you I pulled it out and listened to the only thing I have on it, one direction. maybe i'll mod it to hold good music.
I owned a 5.5 gen iPod, but the screen died and I gave it to a friend like 10+ years ago. The last MP3 player I used was my Zune HD. At the end, I was just using it for podcasts, which I started doing on my phone so I stopped carrying the Zune. That was 5+ years ago. Then a friend introduced me to your channel for headphones, I found this and the other iPod videos and... ended up going to Ebay, buying a set of busted iPod Minis (which they sadly aren't giving away anymore), a new battery, the iFlash SD to CF adapter, and a new microSD card. I am now the proud owner of a 256GB iPod mini loaded with all my music in lossless and I still have 90GB left over. So I said all that to say... Thanks for inspiring me to do a quick, easy DIY and be able to enjoy the results.
hello i just purchased a iPod Mini 2nd gen and i did a battery replacement and the flash mod. I knew that there was the risk of knocking off the C18 capacitor and not having the click wheel not functioning properly. I knocked it off and with the original drive the forward and backward buttons for skipping tracks didn't work. To me it was something I was okay with and was going to live with. But when i got the SD card with its adapter it didn't work but them i restored it and it suddenly worked again. I don't no what happened but i have a fully functional iPod now. Thank you for the video to and it was a fun project.
Usually I hate apple but I've addicted to your videos. I bought an ipod mini gen2 and the iflash and replacment bits. Gonna be nice to not run down my phone battery just to listen to music again. Edit: eh I did it. 64gb blue mini gen 2
I love how when Hugh Jefferys opened some of these later on he was very critical of the design and how difficult it is to open, and Mr. Pods here is just like 'this is so fun you guys' like he's just having a fun time
5:53 Oh my banana. This is the first time I know you can turn on and off the back light of a iPod by holding the menu button! I’ve been use my second hand iPod 4 for a while. And every time I need to switch the backlight say I charge this thing beside my bed. I either need to sorting out where the menu are in the dark or let the backlight flash my eyes to blind! Thank you my generous dude to let me know that!
Are there any tips for avoiding breaking C18? Im thinking of modding an Ipod Mini but Im extremely worried about ruining it. All i want to do is give it a new battery and add more storage
I can say I’ve been subbed since you were at 3k. But that was like 6 hours ago or something. Congrats man! Also hear you talking about CD quality. I currently use a FiiO to play my FLAC collection on the go. Would love a video talking about FLAC and ALAC options with iPods on Rockbox and official firmware.
I bought one of these at Goodwill years ago. Its a 2nd Gen Mini, but the HP version. Unfortunately the screen is starting to go out, but the rest of it is in great shape. I think it was a good buy for $20 in 2014.
With the mini it seems like aside from plastic cases you can only get refurbished cases nowadays Also with the battery you may want to be careful when selecting replacement batteries, as a few have their wires placed in such a way that they push on the headphone jack board, causing it to come loose over time (I've had to open my mini half a dozen times because of this, I ended up having to tear off the stuff the manufacturer wrapped the battery cell in to re-wrap it with electrical tape so that I could actually have enough exposed cable to route it properly)
Monochrome 4th gen. is one of my favorite electronics of all time. Also love the silent buttons and sound quality of the 3rd gen. and the battery life of the 5th gen. Threw a 128GB microSD in the 4th and 5th and use these 3 in combination throughout the week. Looking forward to getting a CF card in the 4th gen. (for that sweet 10% battery improvement, hah) and the HDD out of the 3rd gen. in the future. I've only got about 7600 songs at 75% ALAC, 155GB so all the good ones fit on 128GB just fine. Good times. Love these old things and these videos.
This has inspired me to get a mini and mod it, the amount of people on ebay claiming theirs is a 2nd gen and they're 1st is incredible so thanks for pointing out the difference!

I’m already seeing eBay listings for these in aus getting bought just after the listing of this video 😂
I have one of these as my dialy music players I’ve had it for about 7 years!
Dammit Dank I've just bought one of these nuggets off eBay cos of you, cant wait to mod it!
Personally I prefer the aluminium of the 7th gen
The U2 ones are cool too, with the black back and the red on the front, or the gold. It's damn slick looking.
Smfnk vinyl-art clickwheel?)
I really want something like this so thank you
Me: Wow, this would be really cool to be my first electronics mod and to have a dedicated music player
Me: *goes on ebay to find they're now like 30 bucks each for a meh condition one*
Me: *looks at video date and realises this video probably made the prices go up*
Me: *catches the sadds*
I compromised and got a first gen mini. I just hope i can at least give the ipod 100gb
@@snughug1181 let me know how that goes just orders myself a first gen but the storage is awful so I’ll need to mod it but it’s stated it only works on 2nd gens.
@@explicitbrainjuice6545it arrrived in one piece! But the drive was dead out of the box, wich was odd because the seller said it worked.
@@snughug1181 Can you get your money back for that?
@@explicitbrainjuice6545 won't bother. Could buy a new drive anyways
What are the exact adapters you use for 4th gen? None of the things I've seen in these videos have worked.
Iflash has an adapter to convert Zif to the pins then you can just use the iflash boards... check out the 3rd gen videos ;)
I just bought a 7th gen with the intention of modding it. Would I need to get a new front and back plate?
Not if youre real good/lucky
I think a second channel called dankbricks where you review lego from 2010 2009 ect would be a good idea
I'm so glad I discovered you. Thanks to you I just ordered a 6th gen classic off eBay.
The cheap SD to CF adapter seem to work perfectly on the original firmware but it doesn't work with custom firmware like rockbox
I'm actually here because of the ShrekPod Pro. Needs more technology gravel.
He is almost convincing me to buy an iPod
Fuckin same
Join us on the dark side... we have matching jackets.
Thank you for this one! I'm in the middle of doing one now thanks to this video and channel!
I love your videos, your voice is so relaxing I can fall asleep to all of them.
*yelling at ipods continues* - sleep
you wake up at 5 am and you this is what you hear. "GIER! GIER! GIER!"
BradQuality I’d accept my destiny
i really do not know if you are being sarcastic or you serious
2:58 you forgot to blur that song 😂
8:43 at least it is Shrek coloured ehh
The ShrekPod Mini
I have a suspicion that ipod mini prices are going to surge soon
We have finally seen the green iPad being used! The prophecy was true!
Le Lluc he used it once before
He used it in the wireless charger video
He used it before
Usually I hate apple but I've addicted to your videos.
Pods here is just like 'this is so fun you guys' like he's just having a fun time
Also that montage of the bluetooth iPod’s life killed me 🤣🤣🤣
High Tech With Grumpo me too 🤣🤣🤣
ayyy he showed the ipod mini some love YAY
also my 08 iMac fell on me while typing this it "was" on my bed x3
WHAT
4 am filming?
i'm in
5:53 Oh my banana.
Dank pods: *Don’t ask me how I know this*
Me: **hOw dO yOu kNow tHis**
How dare you.
@@DankPods use my own spell against me, katt ?
I can say I’ve been subbed since you were at 3k. But that was like 6 hours ago or something. Congrats man!
Also hear you talking about CD quality. I currently use a FiiO to play my FLAC collection on the go. Would love a video talking about FLAC and ALAC options with iPods on Rockbox and official firmware.
Would love a flac / alac / rockbox vid too!
70k songs? Haha how do you know 70k songs? I don’t think I can even name 1000!
50k vs 30k??? Where are you all even finding all this music??
Musician for a living so music is my life, been gathering for a long time!
DankPods are you really??? Anything I’ve heard? And also, have you written 50k songs or something? 🤣🤣 that would be super impressive
Name a 1000? Dang mate, I dont think I can even name 20 tbh
Solidcancer07 🤣🤣🤣 omg same now I wanna try
I bought one of these at Goodwill years ago. Its a 2nd Gen Mini, but the HP version. Unfortunately the screen is starting to go out, but the rest of it is in great shape. I think it was a good buy for $20 in 2014.
With the mini it seems like aside from plastic cases you can only get refurbished cases nowadays
Also with the battery you may want to be careful when selecting replacement batteries, as a few have their wires placed in such a way that they push on the headphone jack board, causing it to come loose over time (I've had to open my mini half a dozen times because of this, I ended up having to tear off the stuff the manufacturer wrapped the battery cell in to re-wrap it with electrical tape so that I could actually have enough exposed cable to route it properly)
Danks
Also how do u think of dis
I have only 1500 songs and like I don't know what to put anymore how can someone have 50000 of then
I work as a musician and music has been my whole life. Lots of ripping of CD’s at the University jazz library when I studied my Honours there.
Have like 6900 in my library
I've got 10,000 and I'm always finding like 1,000 a day
Ipod Minis are expensive now. Thanks to dankpods
This has inspired me to get a mini and mod it, the amount of people on ebay claiming theirs is a 2nd gen and they're 1st is incredible so thanks for pointing out the difference!
