A lot of people, including myself, have never owned an iPod in their lives, but you're wanting me to snag a 7th gen classic and mod the hell out of it. Thank you so much!
Been 9 months but glad to say that I dun did it! I bought a mini...first gen...and bought a 128GB SD card to flashmod. (Bought a firstgen cuz they were cheaper and 128GB is still good), so...well there ya go

My childhood "iPod" was an RCA Lyra from 2005 but it worked great, buttons were all on the sides and they were recessed which meant I almost never touched the hold switch. Screen was tiny as heck though, 128x64 character LCD was impossible to read
Bought my first iPod ever 4 moths ago. It was sad and broken. Restored it myself using DankPods video as a guide. Since that I use it everyday for music and audiobooks. Doesn't drain mobile battery, nice sound, no annying "ding ding" notifications for every fcking message. Definitely worth it.

Me and my friends invented "The iPod game" which consisted on popping open an iPod and performing certain tasks (replacing screens, front covers, clickwheels and hold switches), with one rule, the iPod had to be operable DURING the operation, battery and disk attached and playing music, if the iPod restarted or did shut down you lost. Worked wonders when it came to be careful handling electronics, there were all kind of sacrifices, torn ribbons, broken displays, crashed hard drives and rarely damaged motherboards (they are darn durable)
FYI, the 1st gen scroll wheel is removable, I use a piece of tape and lift up on it carefully and the whole thing tabs right out, it’s great for cleaning all the dust and grit that can grind up in the mechanism, just be careful of the metal rod for the center button don’t lose it!
