*CHALLENGE/SUGGESTION FOR FUTURE CONTENT* Short version: A deep dive into ER naming conventions; query: why is it that such a huge ratio of NPCs/characters/enemies/etc. have first names beginning with either "G," "M" or "R" as compared to other character name-groups? Longer-ish version & some insights for those of ya'll who don't do the TLDR thing: I have consumed a huge amount of ER YT content by many creators (your channel, while amazing, is very new to me), however, I've never played the game. Souls-games aren't my cup-o-tea, but I very likely will make an exception for this one at some point because RPGs absolutely are my jam, & I think this may be the best ever created. *disclaimer*: this overall question & many of my observations about it are obviously based on spellings I've seen both in-game & on ER's various Wikis; if any of those names are misspelled in the Wikis, or if I am misremembering any of them, some of my observations & insights may not be as accurate. By my count (a very cursory count, & because I haven't played ER myself, it's a not quite-informed count), ER has 10 characters named with "G" (I'm including Goldmask & the Gleam-Eyed Queen, because I think that's the only way they're identified), 13 with "M," including Millicent's sister Mary, & nine with "R." The next largest name-groups sorted by first character are around or less than half any of those numbers. I'm certainly not counting titles such as "Sorcerer" or "Sir" or "Preceptor," even though ER's various Wikis inaccurately sort some NPC names by title instead of name. So, why? Why those three letters so overwhelmingly? Possible related observations/insights: Many (most?) "M"-named characters are blood-related); Not including the Gloam-Eyed Queen, I'm fairly certain all characters with "G" names are biologically male, although that may be just a coincidence because most names beginning with that letter are already masculine; however, I don't think Miyazaki does "coincidence." He seems like a very, very intentional story-teller. Many, perhaps most, of both "M" & "G" names are strikingly (and confusingly) similar (Millicent-Malenia-Melina-Maliketh-etc). The pattern *seems* to be "M" followed by a vowel followed by "L." Likewise, there's Godrick-Godwyn-Godfrey-Godefroy-etc. I'm not so certain I see as many patterns with "R" names, although obviously many characters with "R" names are also blood or marriage-related. Other probably applicable, related & intertwining themes seem to be mother-offspring relationships (or parent-offspring relationships in general, such as Gowry claiming Millicent as his "daughter" even though obviously she is biologically not), spousal-relationships, & relationships ending with or damaged by or created by *very specifically* betrayal/manipulation/objectification. An example of that specific betrayal, even with side-quest characters Gowry & Millicent, Gowry encourages our Tarnished to betray & murder Millicent even though Gowry specifically claims Millicent as his daughter. This particular relationship, I think, is also a very pivotal one in that it underlines how important the parent-offspring theme is to Miyazaki because Miyazaki chooses to emphasize that relationship even when two characters are not actually blood-related. Some things I've wondered: Given that Fromsoftware is a Japanese studio, & MiyazakiI is obviously Japanese himself, I wonder if this overall question is completely invalid because perhaps the names were all originally written in Japanese, & therefore the spelling & patterns of the English-version names are not as straightforward or applicable at all; obviously I realize that the names are still phonetically the same, but I'm actually very curious, most curious, about why those specific English letters (G, M & R) were chosen. If they weren't the original letters because the original script was written in a non-Latin script alphabet, all bets are off, or rather, maybe the "bet" has changed to some kind of meaning with those phonetic consonant sounds instead of the specific Latin script letters G, M & R. Also, yah, I'm not certain this question of mine is lore-based at all lol. But y'all rock, I'm very impressed, entertained & informed by your content, & it seems maybe this topic could be up your alley. I'm certain that I've both not noticed & forgotten other likely-related themes & patterns in ER, but I'm also fairly certain that I didn't intend to be writing an essay when I started this comment, &, well...
@@crispybackwoods hmm could be. Where I see his major influence is in all the betrayal & almost utter lack of any happy outcomes. I never considered whether GRRM may have contributed to naming conventions, but I have read most of his work & I don’t see any parallels in his Westeros universe regarding name-patterns. You could be right, most creation isn’t done in a vacuum so at the very least he probably helped with the odd name-themes. I’m more of the thought that is pure Miyazaki, though. I think it’s too subtle for GRRM. Martin is a good story teller, perhaps a great one, but he’s a mediocre writer (imo, obviously). *edit* ok you could def be on to something, I don’t know how I didn’t think of all the similar Targaryian names (Aemon, Aerys, Aegon, etc) How fucking dumb would it be if the actual answer to my overall question was that those letters repeated in so many names are just Martin’s initials? I've had it with a previous video where the dung eaters screams woke me up in the middle of the night with adrenaline rushing through my body thinking someone was trying to murder me. Now I can't watch videos with dung eater segments to fall asleep to. It might be too much to ask, but for future videos, would it be possible to have a version without the screams? I don't think anybody is going to miss it and I would love to be able to listen to your content to fall asleep again!
