Probably the best song i ever heard, was Tom Rush “urge for going,” that song has haunted me since the 60 ! Just recently i discovered Kate Wolf song “green eyes “ I think it’s the best song that i had never heard before ! 2nd to urge for going!
I heard Tom sing this at Sargent Gym at Boston University around 1970. I have never heard a more profound silence from the audience while he played it. It still resonates.
I saw Murray McLauchlan sing this when I was at university in Canada. Another great one. Just a beautiful song. Tom Rush was so good at finding the good stuff.
Went to high school with Tom, remember The New World Galleries in Portsmouth New Hampshire where he performed occasionally, in the early 60's. Brilliant guitar man.
...That song ! a real kinda ball-breaker..... in the mid 60s this was crushingly accurate... and Mr TR was/is/always will be an incredible singer.... God! that was LONG TIME AGO ! this is leaving me fractured.... [ he was responsible for showcasing So many young, unknown artists.... mahalo nui loa ("Thank you, so very much") Mr Rush, "you filled our kitchens & living rooms/with your dreams & broken schemes"... with So Damn Much beautiful, meaningful, delicious music that it is difficult to realize how much would be missing if we hadn't had your ear, and heart, around.... Live long, & prosper
We moved in '67 when I was 12. I was born there and that was the only home I ever knew. Never went back nor missed that place My old room and my early childhood. Wonder what it looks like now?
No one else sings songs written by others like Tom. He is in a class of his own. He completely inhabits a song and makes it unique to him. Saw him in the 60s loved his music ever since
The Circle Game is one of my five or ten dearest records. Got it in high school in the 60's and saw him perform at a coffee house shortly after. It was such a magical time.
just discovered this song. Compared it to very old versions (late 1960s and later) as performed by Tom Rush and am amazed that it still sounds that good in this 2013 recording, performed with feelings and a good sound. Hope he still plays it in 2023---
Love Tom's version, love Murray's version. But I just wanted to say that I marvel at how great Tom's voice continues to be all these decades after he first cut this song. Beautifully done.
Such a great song by Murray McLauchlan, and you always do it such great justice, caressing the words and the melody. I will say like the others here that your voice remains a marvel.
Just heard this for the first time about two weeks back. Wow! Really don't know how I missed this one. It is right up there with the best of them of its time (Young, Drake, Stevens, Dylan). Wow! His voice is exactly as the master.
Saw Tom "live" in St. Louis at the Sheldon as part of the "Fantastic Folk Series". Really loved his work. Was surprised I had not heard of him as much as his contemporaries in the "Cambridge scene." His was one of the first CD's that I bought - memories of that concert! "Urge for Going" is the one I remember.
Heard an interview with Tom Rush in which he said when he was recording this he had to "toughen" himself to get through it without breaking down . . Incredible and timeless song
a great unheralded song of Murray's always loved it from the first time I heard it & later at the Riverboat where We (Renaissance Faire) opened for him
Saw him many a time at the old Le Hibou great guitar player gave us master classes in the afternoon . In fact he played my old Epiphone Texan Guitar ... (Out on Vancouver Island still working with my nephew Sean)
do you know if this song is also called 'Man Child'? Tom sang a poignant song similar about a guy leaving home, i thought it was on an lp but never bought it, Tom said that he became overcome with emotion sometimes when he sang the song, thought it was about leaving his wife and his little son in 'Man Child'. Wish there was a way to contact him and find out what song that was or if i made a mistake.
You can reach Tom at tom rush.com, and yes, he does personally answer emails! He is finally coming to Pittsburgh in April 2017. First saw him in 1971, then last time in NH 23 years ago when he did an encore with Livingston Taylor (also a favorite). I am so hoping that he plays this song. You can check out his tour. This may be his last one.
was this song ever called Man Child? you came to Vancouver BC years ago and performed a song and you said that you became emotional sometimes when performing the song, maybe it's this one. but on an lp there was a song called Man Child which i wished i had bought before someone else had purchased it. Anyways you sound as good as when i first saw you in Toronto at the Riverboat coffeehouse in 1968 and you bumped into me after the first set, and i was mesmerized, lol. xo
Brings tears every time. A performance that will never age.
Hey, just about the greatest folk-pop song ever? Who of us hasn't gone through something like the kid in the song? Go ahead and vote if you agree!

One of my many favorite songs. My husband and I have been Tom Rush fans from the beginning, Tom you are a wonderful musician.

The first song I heard when a dear friend played it for me on his guitar once upon a time...very emotional each word.
I love Tom so much. He hooked me 45 years ago with the amazing storytelling voice, the notes on the guitar, and his musical sense of humor. Thanks Tom
Fantastic song from a lovely man. Wish you well Tom. X

I like folk music! Absolutely! I love Child’s song by Tom Rush

Boy, does this song hit close to home
After all these years, this song performed by this artist still gets me to my heart and soul. Never left me and a true treasure.
I listened to this song when my son left home in NH for college in Boston, then to California, then to Texas. Always brings tears to my eyes.
thats been for years my favourit song..and still is...thank you dear Tom Rush!
beautifully performed by Mr Tom Rush and beautifully written by
Murray McLauchlan
I sure love Child’s song by Tom Rush!
A treasure! Tom Rush and Murray McLauchlan you'll be remembered by millions.
Tom Rush played at McCabes May 2018 and he was great. Been a fan since the late 60's, first time that I saw him in concert. Had a great time
I always admire the beautiful quality of his voice, well cared for!
Tom Rush also recorded "Old Man's Song", another gem written by Murray McLauchlan...

I cannot listen to this song without crying.
It's rough.
Love your Tom Rush
Thank you sir.
Thank you! you made me who i am.

@jimallen8 Yeh, he mentions that in his documentary. It was difficult for him to sing it in concert. He'd break down in tears.
Thanx this song comes tripping back to when my children left home on their own ...I cried :( tears of joy and sorrow...empty nest? Wicked! Thanx
First time hearing this - what a great song. How'd I miss that?
a great unheralded song of Murray's always loved it from the first time I heard it & later at the Riverboat where We (Renaissance Faire) opened for him
would like to hear them both together in a concert, Murray and Tom
This song meant a lot to me in my 20's it has took on new meaning when son's left home.
Saw him many a time at the old Le Hibou great guitar player gave us master classes in the afternoon . In fact he played my old Epiphone Texan Guitar ... (Out on Vancouver Island still working with my nephew Sean)
Bravo
Tom, you sing this song the best! I think that this and "The Circle Game" are the greatest songs of this type. The passage of time...
thank you for posting!
an outstanding human being !
The best version is the Tom Rush one from his album with the sad oboe
Been a fan for over forty years, heard him twice at McCabe's in Santa Monica. Do hope to hear him again.
WHAT a great and yet so sad song....

Not bad, but no one can touch David Bromberg's' version of this song.
