      My paint sprayer was about less than $20 at harbor freight and a staple gun is around that same price as well. The only part that is expensive is the air compressor. You need and air compressor to use that paint gun. I reccomend a t50 size for the staple gun in case you were wondering. I am going to eventually invest in an electric staple gun though. That first piece of furniture was a telephone table that would typically be placed next to a sofa or chair in livingroom. I think its from 1950's or 60s. My grandmother and aunt had them. Their rotary phone would sit on top and the phone book would be in the space underneath. I think I would have kept the top part though because for me it's a fun memory.

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 года назад +2

      Oh wow! I see so many tables like that and never knew it was for that. When I think of a telephone table I think of the ones with the chair and table attached together. I have also heard it be referred to as a gossip bench though. What a fond memory for you! I can totally understand wanting to keep it together. It's funny how times change. Now hardly anyone uses a phone book.

Fabric and padding are expensive, if you can reuse what is there then you should. Its better for the planet to reuse and recycle as well :) less waste

    I don't understand why you don't like the beauty of wood, and have to basically coat everything with what looks like dollar store plastic. The wood is so beautiful!

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 года назад +2

      If you actually watched the video you would see that I also restored an antique with its original wood finish. I have no idea what you mean about coating it in dollar store plastic? How do you coat something in plastic? Thats nuts. I can't stand fake wood finishes and many of my projects have that type of finish on them. I also am not a fan of "orange" wood stains. I do not paint antiques unless the wood finish has been ruined, but things that are not antiques I DO paint and I enjoy giving new life to drab pieces. I am an artist and art is subjective so although very many people enjoy my work, some people like yourself do not. Thats just the way it goes.

    Painting with a white shirt on and not getting any paint on it! I can’t do that. I usually have the same amount of paint on me as my projects.

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 года назад

      That is so funny! And so true. I am usually covered in paint, I dont know how I did it with that project. I cant even eat a meal without ruining a white shirt! That's why I just buy the men's white cotton shirts that come cheap in a pack at walmart to wear for these projects. You can bleach them and get them "clean" after germy projects. They may not look white anymore but at least you'll know the gunk has been washed out lol. Thanks for watching, Tanya!

    I loved all of your projects. I can totally relate to your buffalo check table story.I redid a large round pedestal table.I shortened it to make a coffee table and painted stripes of various shades of blues with white.I then painted a large gold anchor in the center.Even though everyone commented on it and said they loved it,it took a long time to sell.Finally the right customer with a new beach cottage came along and bought it.
    Now I try to be more neutral in my refinishing if I plan to sell.Love your channel and I look forward to watching more videos, old and new.

      Yes you are right. I am going to try and remember a face mask in the future. I have developed a sensitivity to wood stains now from not wearing a mask while staining over the years. If I use stain now or do any sanding without a mask I will be stuffed up for the rest of the day and night. So no more being reckless for me!

    You do really hard work into your painting but a very unprofessional job on the upholstery. Remove the old aged materials and add new foam and fabric. Please do this out of pride of your workmanship. Good luck as you learn your trade.

      Haha gee, thanks! So nice of you!

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 года назад +5

      For Joy or anyone else who may be wondering, the reason I do not change the old fabric or foam:
      1. Foam is expensive, and I am not made of money. If you buy a project and then spend more than the project is worth on foam then you wont be able to resell for any type of profit.
      2.it is difficult to shape a piece of foam perfectly, and the original foam or padding is already the perfect shape.
      3. Foam and fabric can easily be cleaned and reused (it's good for the earth and your wallet). I also apply a bedbug treatment to every upholstered piece before I film JUST IN CASE. You never know.
      4. It helps make the project easier and faster and does not have any negative results
      5. Doing projects in this way helps me to build confidence in my viewers. I want my projects to be something everyone feels confident trying on their own.
      6. The old fabric holds the old foam or padding in place which makes reupholstering easier.
      There are some cases where replacing the padding would be necessary: If it had a smell you couldn't get out, it was too flat from overuse, it was falling apart, or you suspect any type of bug activity.

      Thanks for explaining this. I was wondering why you didn’t change out the old seat. It make sense. What do you use to spray for bugs?

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 года назад +4

      @@karenbutcher5921 I use a powder that is for bed bugs and lice. I sprinkle the powder over the seat and pat the powder into the fabric a few times and let it sit for at least one day. Then I vacuum it clean before I work on my project. Any brand is fine, just look for it to say that it is used for bedbugs specifically.
