As a professional cosmetologist for over 10yrs, I totally empathize with you and understand the haircut situation. Clients just don’t understand how much time and/or skills it takes to do a “quick” haircut.
I used to want to be a hair dresser then I really sat down and thought about just HOW PICKY people are about thier hair and changed my damn mind lmao 😂
Every job has its pros and cons. Depending if like doing what you’re doing its also gonna be easier to deal with.

Yeah I agree, I think she liked your job but she was just trying to find an excuse to pay less, like complaining about the color not being right and then the haircut. She just wanted a discount🤣

Totally a full haircut!! I can’t stand when people say to me, “just take of the ends.” Or a “baby cut”. A cut is a cut. Now I do charge differently whether or not a client wants a dry cut or shampoo and blow dry. Certain people are always looking for something free. It’s always the most seemingly “wealthy” clients too. 🙃
You don't seem to understand truly wealthy people bargain hunt or look for bartering deals
I manage a nail salon and women always try to get free French tip by saying “why would I pay more for a little white line” WHAT!!!!

I can't stand a cheapskate. My Mom is always saying how expensive the salons are, and I always tell her that everything costs. My Mom is very picky and cheap. I go to Wade Gordon, which are students, and I have noticed the girls do a way better job than the salons I have gone to in the past. The only thing that I didn't like with the salons is that several of my hair stylists would miss several grey roots, and I would notice them in my good lighting in my bathroom at home. The salon lighting was always so dim and hard to see my grey roots that got missed. The students are a lot better at covering my grey roots than the salons I have been to, and so much cheaper. I really appreciate the students and their time they put into my hair.
Lesson learned don’t take your co workers clients, especially if no one else wants to take them lol it’s def for a reason. But then again the $ and the story time is def worth it 😂 Happy Holidays Sam! Safe travels 🙏🏽❤
Professional here & you should absolutely charge anytime you pick up your shears. Unless, as you said you were just dusting the back. I don’t charge for a bang trim but if I have to use multiple tools and go into the hair I’m charging. It’s not just the act of the cut, it’s the TIME!
I had a client like this & I had to fire her. She gave me to much anxiety, she was always late & never satisfied but always came back. It was WILD! Oh the joys of our craft 🩷🩷🩷 I love how you confidently took her though 👏🏻 👏🏻

I have to be honest... I have this haircut. I'm also super specific on ratios because my growth pattern is drastically uneven. Its barely visible, but because I'm on the autism spectrum and have a sensory problem with hair in general. I always ask for more off my thick side as soon as they're done, and it's always after I get home I feel missed pieces on my neck. I made sure my stylist knows this so there's no issue, and I try to joke about it and often offer to tip again if or when I call back and find an untexturized piece. I always try to be as cordial as possible, match their energy and honor their policies. I even sit with discomfort for weeks until my next appointment if I feel I'm being ''too much '', even if I've paid over $100 including a tip. For Jessica, the fact she didn't want anything on her neck and couldn't sit still may be a neurodivergence issue. Not to excuse this fuckery and haggling, lol. That's basically theft of your services. But, I hope I never come off this way to my stylist. Obviously I tip and pay generously because I'm aware they probably hate seeing me. Would you and your coworker still be annoyed and upset if someone was intensely particular about the cut, but without the... er, thievery? Lol your videos are helpful to me so I can be a better client.
As a professional hairstylist myself, i feel as if she was one of your regular clients then yes MAYBE it should’ve a free cut; since she had just came in two weeks prior. However seeing as she seemed like a nightmare, with the add on gloss situation + the extreme entitlement the charging of the haircut was an annoyance fee lol. 😅
She wanted way too much from a sub hairstylist. This is like expecting a sub teacher to answer questions about the comprehensive final
Once she had a melt down she need not be a client anymore. Shes toxic
When I go get trims, I pay full price. It’s my stylist policy and if I want my hair done by her I abide.
She asked you to do the cut at the last minute. No, she shouldn’t have assumed it would be free. That’s really nervy.

This is why I will have signed legal contracts before any service other than a haircut. You see videos of these psycho narcs on Stylists videos telling people to “report them to the board.” For cutting it shorter than they’d like. Yeah, no. They board won’t do shit for you about that. People are crazy AF. I had so many clients like this. Never again.

A trim is a cut. lol we’ve got to do the same steps if it’s quarter inch or 7 inches. I’m with you., no thanks I don’t like working for free.
Sometimes I miss doing nails, and then I remember moments like this… and then I don’t miss it anymore lol
I don’t complain if a trim is the same amount as a cut because Ive been told it’s essentially the same process/time. Unless you get a cut that’s drastically different the price difference may seem justified to us non hairstylists. But tbh when I find a hairstylist who respects not cutting more than asked for and can style soft curls I stick with them till foreeeeeever lol
You are completely valid for charging her full price, and I honestly think the fact that your salon makes the cut so discounted with the color is doing the stylists such a disservice in the end! At my salon we have neck trim and bang trims which are $15 and I just use my discretion for whether I charge for that or a full cut

A haircut is a haircut whether you take off 5 inches to a dusting. Especially when she asked for it you didn’t say “well I’m just gonna blend this better to make me feel better about it”. You still have to do all the steps and the sectioning and like you said pull out all of your tools. Like take it as a lesson “Jessica”.

Seriously the nerves of the woman call to get the haircut free. Like your time doesn’t matter!!. Like i would understand if you didn’t do what she wanted, i would understand wanting a discount, but even that, you have to pay for the services. I think your girls are to nice, i wouldn’t give her anymore services. Maybe after being banned for different salons she would understand that she can be a bitch like that. People have a hard time to understand, it’s not because you saw a picture in pinterest that means your hair will react or do the sameting. I have not a lot of hair and it super fine, i can’t expect going to the salon and demande the same volume, the same big curls on my hair like a picture. It’s impossible because I’m suffering from alopecia.

Any time you use clippers or scissors you are doing a cut and should be paid. If a client thinks that’s unfair they have the option to go elsewhere.
