Tutorial: Joining the Fuel Rats

- Опубликовано: 15 авг 2024
- In this tutorial we look at the process of joining one of the most respected groups in all of gaming, the Fuel Rats! They are a player group dedicated to rescuing commanders who run out of fuel anywhere in the galaxy. Their motto is simple: We have fuel, you don't. Any questions?

I'm thinking of making a player group that focuses on bounties directed at people who attack fuel rats.
Count me in
Ditto
i would 100% support that i don't get why anyone would even think of attacking a rat
@@Ironslayer98 people who kill rats are just jeleous that the rats have fuel.
You should after what they did and said to Exigeous, they are run by a group of dorks and dweebs who power trip in the ONLY way they possibly can in life...digitally on a game.
I'm not a fuel rat, but I once spent a day flying to save a friend who ran out of fuel some 12000 lY from the bubble. He had about a month of exploration data he didn't want to lose and it felt very satisfying to rescue him :)
Gaz Clarke did he cry when he heard you warp in
You are a good man and a true friend
Keep up the good work!
You should join the fuel rats!
Fuel Rat here, bit of a correction on the IRC debriefing. It's not an absolute and can heavily depend on the individual Rat's preference. Debriefing in fuelrats chat can clog things up for other rescues. We trust our rats can handle stuff like that.
Nice chatting with you in Discord last night, thanks for the tips!
Yeah, I always did my debriefs in game chat, back in the day.
@@MattBalara This is still the case, but in that section Exigeous was referring to how it's done on drills, debriefs for those are always done in a drill channel so the seer can read along
I heard that in the new Avangers 4 movie, Tony Stark (aka Ironman) was calling a fuel rat ;)
That's a good one.
Lol you made me laugh
He forgot to leave the session tho haha
It's like becoming an EMT or firefighter, but in a game.
I'm still a noob on this and needed their help the other day, i was well impressed. It's like calling the AA when your car breaks down.
Except the rats help you for free
Rats saved my noob ass way back in 17’ when I figured it would be fun to go exploring in an Eagle with no fuel scoop. He gave me some fuel and we chit chatted about certain game mechanics I wasn’t familiar with, afterwards we parted ways. Never had to call them again, hope I don’t have too. But the Rats helped me love ED even more than I already did. GO FUEL RATS!!
i hope someone in the future makes this an actual thing when space travel becomes normal
I like how I get this in my recommended the day after I watch kolos video of her calling the fuel rats on stream lol
I watched that right before this lmao
1 year later... same.
What a wonderful group of guys and gals.
@BMO But some of them could be gals
The meta-gaming in E:D is some of the best out there!
I'm not a Fuel Rat myself (and, tbh, I'm too much of a proud git to bother them with my dumb mistake vs. taking a 5 mil FDL rebuy :P), but I imagine the rush is similar to "rescuing" people under fire in ArmA. Is it necessary when the guy will just re-spawn back at base if he dies anyway? No, but the role play is what keeps people coming back. It's great when developers like FDev and Bohemia recognize and facilitate it.
Well, for many players who make the mistake, losing the ship and paying the rebuy can be a major setback credits-wise. Also, a lot of players have been rescued while out exploring and losing tens of millions of exploration data, as well as having to restart at the last dock (which could 10kly away) will make you jettison the pride through the cargo scoop and call the Fuel Rats. And they do rescue people from literally anywhere in the galaxy you can get to.
You know I've felt the same - not wanting to bother them with something rather minor. The thing is not only is it NOT a bother they actively WANT to be bothered! Now that I've been on that side I can assure you that there are several players at any given moment hoping someone will need help and they will jump at the chance to do so - so please, in the future by all means bother them - hell they will almost thank you for it!
Oh for sure, and I would hope I could muster the patience to contact them if I find myself in that scenario! But so far mine have been forgetting to fit a fuel scoop or landing in an unscoopable/stationless system (in the bubble, even) in an unengineered-FSD Fer-de-lance... rookie mistakes XD.
Exigeous, I thought about it that way after I wrote about ArmA, and you are absolutely right... thanks for the excellent video! - Cmdr Meche770
You'll just have to sit through a debrief explaining what your rookie mistake was and how to hopefully not make it again. That's the only cost.
Oh, and of course telling all you friends so that they can get rescued when they need us, too.
"You're not successfully rescued until I've explained enough about Elite: Dangerous to where you're unlikely to run out of fuel ever again." - Me.
Video is BotFodder(tm) approved! Good job.
Whew, thank goodness as BotFooder approved as been my goal since day one!! :D
I was once rescued by a Fuel Rat years ago and can confirm I was lectured about scoopable stars. Have never needed rescuing since.
Rat : "What have we learned today?" :-D
Called the fuel rats last night. Great service, and very friendly. Gave me all the tips in this video, and stayed with me til I had scooped enough fuel to return to the bubble. By sheer coincidence, I ended up at a station where I was able to upgrade cargo capacity, thrusters, life support, and shields. Still couldn't find a better fuel scoop though, but all in all? A great experience. (Not the nearly running out of fuel part, I had a 1/4 part remaining but still freaky)
I'm not a rat but I have done my own deep space rescues. One of the first things I did in elite was save a cobra mk3 in my starter sidewinder.
Shortly after getting this game for the Xbone I heard about the Rats. I thought it was pretty awesome to have a group of players dedicated to helping the player base out. I hoped one day I could join them when I got better ships. Then I got my DBX, I thought I might be able to now. I built it up and got used to it. Ended up being my favorite ship. Then I ended up having to move and lost my internet. Now I'm thinking of building a PC and will definitely get this game again. Hopefully I can join them this time. I don't PvP anyway so being apart of something as great as this would be kinda cool.
If your on xbox I'm a xrat. ( Xbox fuel rat ) feel free to add me if you ever want to play together or what not Silent_Fox3363
I just started Elite Dangerous today, and I definitely aspire to be a fuel rat. It looks like a rewarding volunteer service and I'd be glad to fill in a spot.
Rat: “Alright almost there” Client: “Cool I’m over here. Only 30 sec left of fuel” Rat: “Hold in my girl just texted me ‘I’m home alone.’ Lateah!”
Everyone, raise and salute for the Fuel Rats!

When scooping fuel you gotta remember to grab a can of kgb foam.
I can't even imagine to be one of them, but I really appreciate their work
Just got distracted watching this vide while jumping back to my base station after a sales run and..... needed to call the rats to save me.....
Another good vid Cmdr. Really appreciate your efforts to make the game more enjoyable/understandable. o7
I’m a new fuel rat! I can’t believe this day would come
Congrats! I'm considering joining them myself. Maybe then I'll finally get the chance to put my AspX and my engineered 5A FSD to good use
@@rjcallahan842 thanks bro!
I'm really thinking about joining this group. I just like helping people and I love this game! :)
*squeaks loudly* o7
At first the idea sounded right up my alley, but I'm worried I might not be able to handle it or that it'd be too complicated.
Oh well.
There's been times when I almost needed to call them, but before I even do, I first try to find other options so I don't waste their time on a rescue. I always feel bad to take away these heroes' time in the game with my own fuel problem. Anyways, I haven't called them at all and hope never to have to do so. Thanks for the tutorial!
Oh man are you thinking about this the WRONG way! Not only are you not wasting their time - they are actively HOPING that someone will call in and need a rescue! This is what they do, so right as I type this there are guys watching their chat just hoping they can do rescue someone - so honestly don't ever hesitate as they love what they do!
@@Exigeous Yeah actually maybe you're right. I'll make sure to give them a call if I need help! Always sorta thought of it as I was taking away time from their missions and stuff, but they are fuel rats for a reason, which is to help people.
There's a sort of reverance that revolves around Fuel Rats; much like what you might see for say, special operations or the military in general. Reading the comments reminds me of veterans sharing their experiences :)
And when the Carriers come, that would only enhance there abilities......Carriers need to come for all player groups
Couldn't agree more.
If they didnt cost so much damn money just for the right to have it, I would agree.
Exigeous thanks a lot! I didn't Know the limpets are synthesizable. I'm interested in understand how they work (the fuel rats) thanks for this nice and clear information and tips. Best regards
:Fuel Rats is 4 life!
I carry around a compliment of fuel transfer and repair limpets in case i find anyone in need. but i've since found out... i've not met another player yet.
Fuel rats should be allowed to use that Hack multi tool. Only fuel rats.
Never needed the rats, but got close in long trade hauls once or twice. Once I get myself an Asp Ex all engi kitted I hope to join them
Happy 100,000th rescue :D
One day perhaps, I'll be part of the greatest pilots out there.
Considering how much I'm scared of dying since I almost always break the rule of not flying without rebuy, I feel I am prepared enough to never need the fuel rats
They definitely saved my ass one day. I was dumb enough to run out of fuel because every star wasn't scoopable yet I kept following my current route.. yeah.. so I ran out of fuel and had an important cargo item to deliver from a far distance. So drifting around in space doing shit i looked them up and luckily they were able to help out instead of me having self destruct and going back for the item and so on.
I've never run out of fuel myself after nearly four years of playing. Been close though, but that was because of a stupid mistake. I was actually thinking of applying. Since the game lack any sort of content for me now, i might try something new.
It really is a ton of fun, as for me I'm a moron so I've used them 4-5 times over the years!
They need to add a payment system or a trading system To be able to trade money for services rendered
I once found a distress call with the faction: Fuel Rat's Mischief, since the threat was 0 I went there and there was a ship in need of fuel. Given the unique name of the Fuel Rats, I'm assuming they got their name from random encounters like that, or was it pure coincidence?
Total coincidence, but that is a pretty one!
May be a fun change of pace.
I am prepping for a long outting.
I could set the ship up a tad bit different and get in on this.
How do you request a drill?
Cant wait to get enough experience and credits to confidently join the fuel rats
The builds are no longer at those links.... sighs...
Are there any type of status that keep PvP away from FR while they are on their mission...or are they are forced to PARTY INVITE? I've seen some unofficial "retaliation squad" action if some ass CMDR kill a Fuel Rat.
Also are they Paid?...or is it a partial-time role-play?
Maybe they get put on a "do not rescue" list if they kill a fuel rat. Which is an appropriate action.
As a fuel rat no, we are not paid. There is no official way of keeping us from being pvped and as we are often in "ratships" with usual no weapons and often little or no shields then we are an easy target. It is however the policy of the fuel rats not to retaliate. If we are fired upon by a player then we will haul tail and try to get out of there, we are definitely not a dial a fight service.
And no cyborg there is not official "do not rescue" list. We will rescue anyone, anywhere. Thankfully rats being attacked by players is very very rare and as we do not even defend ourselves we are not even much of a trophy target for people
Do you have to be available a certain range of time? Like will you be given shit because you weren’t there to help do to being at work for example
Cool Video on the Fuel Rats CMDR o7 maybe you could make a similar Video on the Iridium Wing o7
Yep, that's already on the list, albeit a bit lower.
Just got saved from a fuel rat, might consider to became one myself :))
I’m surprised that they take the game so seriously like a real emergency service and dedicate all their free time into saving players
It's rather impressive isn't it?
Actually, it's dumb... This is what happens when you lose touch with reality...
@@freedomfighter6297 Yeah it isn't like humans have fun in different ways to each other... Oh wait
@@Exigeous yup
Fly dangerously and don't forget your towel
If your not cool, this is a hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy refrenc
is there another way u can link the builds, my web browser keeps flagging it as unsafe
“The most respected group not only in Elite Dangerous, but in all of gaming”
Signal Cartel of Eve Online would like a word with you
If I didn't talk to idiots for literally 9 hours of my day that can barely read a brochure, getting calls QA'd because the guy I was talking to could not give me a straight answer to a question, this would have sounded like fun.
I already did so yay
Great vid! What's the colour codes for your hud?
You the man!
I always wanted to join fuel rats but meeting new people and learning was always a weakness for me😔
Well they are a very helpful and welcoming group, I'd encourage you to give it a try.
@Alan Hope you gave it a try!
If not...do it!!! A good support team can be a life changing experience and then the self-satisfaction you will feel with each rescue can make things even better! ;)
Music seems way loud this vid
Damn, I've changed up my work flow as I upgraded to Audition and haven't gotten the kinks out - I'll be sure to lower it on the next or is it so bad I need to remix it?
CMDR Exigeous no just seemed louder than other vids I’ve watched. Vid is fine just musically loud. 👍
Okay, cool - but thanks for the feedback. I'm still really new at this and am still coming up with a solid work flow so feel free to keep the constructive critisim coming
CMDR Exigeous not a criticism mate I think your vids are really good. 👍👍👍
Oh I didn't take it negatively, as I said I appreciate the feedback as I'm always trying to make things better. On the other videos I put out today I dropped the music by an additional -2 db.
Hi CMDR Exigeous. Would you be interested in making the subtitles to this video not auto-generated, and if you do - would you mind adding Russian version? I would love helping you with those.
I'm certainly up for doing that - I haven't tried before so I'm not sure how much work it is but I could start uploading the scripts as I do write everything out. Give me a few days to look into it and I'll reply back here - I assume you can take the English one and translate it to Russian?
I can translate, yes. I can also type up the English one, but I am not sure how one integrates them into videos...
edit: checked my own unlisted videos, and it's in the Edit Video - Captions - select language and carry on from there... and there is also the "community contributions" option.
Thanks for being willing to help - I've seen that option before, just haven't used it yet. Next on my list to figure out.
great
so basically a sea of thieves bilge rat but in space?
I'm wondering if I can join them to provide security/escort during a rescue operation. I have the game budget to put a nice ship together to provide defense during the fuel transfer process. BTW Thanks for the video, Exigeous. I like your style: interesting subjects, brief, straight to the point but taking good care of the details. I just subscribed a few days ago. Keep doing the good work!!
I've asked this before and they aren't interested as it's not really needed given how rarely there are issues - and when there are they are non-confrontational and just wake out. If they have to eat a rebuy they eat a rebuy, no big deal. Not a bad idea just not what they are looking for - and thanks for the kind words!
Thanks for the reply, commander!
When ratting, I fly next to no shields and absolutely no weapons, as many of us do. Any armed ship will not keep up with our jump range and just slow down rescues. If we get attacked we protect the client, if they can run, we will run, and once again: any armed ship will not be able to keep up.
One would have to be a special kind of "person" to go ahead and attack a commander lending a hand. You guys are awesome, keep it up :)
do fuel rats get in-game credits for rescues?
Nope
What if a fuel rat doesn't have fuel?
Oh no
He'd be just a rat, then. With a Fuel Scoop.
It happens, and they then......call the fuel rats and mercylessly have the piss taken out of then by the mischief. Seriously it can happen to anyone
just buy a fuel scoop and an afms, it never happened to finish the fuel but if you break the fsd you can activate the ship's self-destruction from the options. they remained as tradition just because you didn't have these options before??
Uh, seems you're 100% missing the point as: You can make a mistake and forget a fuel scoop, AFMUs have nothing to do with running out of fuel or hull as they only repair modules (and not your canopy if it blows) and self destructing will lose all your data, lose all your bounties or missions and kill your NPC crew member if you have one. MANY reasons for these guys to exist and in no way just tradition. Once you learn more about the game you'll understand why they are so respected and used by many on an hourly basis.
@@Exigeous the trade data and bounties are almost useless since you make 10x more credits with mining, and the crew members can be repurchased for cheap. if you don't use the self-destruct button in these cases, when should you ever?
I've got a question. Are they just taunting me or are they willing to share?
Sounds a lot like my call center job -___-
Fuel rats should allowed to use that ed hacking tool or trainer thing, if it still exists.
While that would be useful that kinda defeats the point of it
You guys have an IRC to hang out where visitors are welcome? Thinking of joining, but not sure yet (I tend to have gaming ADD a bit).
Also, awesome vid!
Yes, absolutely - when you go to the site just don't join the main channel, instead join RatChat and you can get to know the guys that way.
irc://irc.fuelrats.com:6667/#ratchat < not clickable, YT does not know IRC protocol
i will join then.... i just need to travel back to the bobble.... 30kLy, well... looks like i have some time to read the knowledge base lol
reminds me of reddit rescue on dayz.
How do I utilize the services of Fuel Rats? I'm stuck.
Google is your friend
really good video my friend, but process take too long, i hate fill paper in internet, some npc ships being random helping with fuel, have to say fuel rats do amazing job to help fellow commanders huge thumps up you guys and girs at service 😄😄👍👍👍👍👍👍, i do play mostly my self solo or private servers not so much open, for reason. fly save commanders, doing tonigh mayby road to richest my dmx 😄😄😄👍👍👍👍🙋
Uh, I'm not sure what you mean by "process take too long" - are you saying the Rats take too long to get to you? If so IMHO you couldn't be more incorrect as they have pilots all over the bubble, and galaxy, and can be refueling you in a matter of minutes. Given your only other choice would be to self destruct or wait for a friend to outfit with fuel limpets, cargo racks, buy limpets and fly to you nothing is faster than these guys.
CMDR Exigeous no my friend, not saying RATS taking too long get to me, i just meaning i hate fill internet documents for joining rats.i dont meaning anything bad for those who help other commanders, i will help too, but i just dont play open that much, just uprade last night dmx, jump now empty 60 LY and if have cargo 50 ly, almost all parts are D. lighter and better for road to richest, need get my exploration elite then i can get access to jameson memorial, thanks to cmdr Kreid for info 😀😀😀👍👍👍👍🙋
Uh, okay but by "fill internet documents" you can't mean the fact you just have to give them your commander name and system? How else would you do it giving them less? "I need fuel but I'm not going to tell you who I am or where I am"??
of course im gonna tell them my commander name, its not secret, anyone can see my name in my videos, that was nice answer, ''i need fuel but i'm not going to tell you who i am or where i am 😆😆😆😆, fly safe all commanders, if someone wanna add me in game i am cmdr vladu, playing pc only. 😀😃🙋
I've had it easier becoming a fireman than a fuel rat man wtf
If anyone is interested, my friends and I are going to be starting a mercenary/ escort business. Basically protects you for a certain amount or time based on how much you pay.
But how can players pay other players?
@@chrisklitou7573 commodities I think
I have some friends who aren’t in the community but they sure do act like fuel rats
Gonna get elite danger for my birthday i might join the fuel rats? Any tips
"Any tips" - other than the entire video you're commenting on, no ;-)
Ok thnx for the tip
CMDR Exigeous, is there anywhere to get in touch with the fuel rats about trolls or people that attack them?
Yes and no - you can ping them in the RatChat IRC channel (choose Click Here to Chat instead of Rescue) but they will just ignore it - meaning they just ignore the griefers when that happens and go back to their business. It's just a reality of the game that it's going to happen from time to time - my advice is not to let it bother you as that's what the griefers want. Fortunately it's rather rare that it happens - incidentally they refer to these players as "Cats" as Rats don't like Cats ;-)
Right here. Waiting for you to do anything.
CMDR Exigeous ah okay, got some friends starting a group to go out and hunt trolls and thought about helping the fuel rats in that way
The Fuel Rats are a strictly non-confrontational group. We do not want to be "dial-a-fight". Most of our ships are (relatively) low rebuy in cost, unarmed, and weakly shielded - meaning not a challenge at all (and conversely built for jump range). Should we get attacked by a client, we quietly ban them from IRC and move on. If you're on our IRC, you'll hear about it when there's a Cat, but that's about it - we don't even really mention the name. You'll just see "Case # is a cat".
BotFodder I can back BotFodder up (Spacedbee here!). We don’t even carry weapons, and can revoke your tail if you deploy weapons during a rescue. Even to kill a troll
😃👍
Someday.
I said the same thing and was so glad when I finally got around to it - do it!
whats your color xml?
I would join
Well what's stopping you??
CMDR Exigeous i wrote comment before watching (same with like)
THE LOOOORD AND THE SAVIOUR :0
Why say fly dangerously when it’s a video about the fuel rats ?
Every video. It's like his catchphrase or something.
eddp links dont work no more
this should just be something that can be accessed in game.
Rats tried to kill me and then framed me
Griefers I tell you, they're all GRIEFERS!
i had fuel till i ran out.
Sounds like a lot of work.
Are the rats on console
Yes they're PC,PS4 and XB1
They saved my ass
it still look compacted to me, loads of text to read and rules and tests !!!!!!.
Joining them, yes, it's not easy but isn't too hard. Using them is very easy.
wait you said most games does that include EVE online
too bad there is an age requirement
I might just run myself out of fuel just to be rescued lol
Don’t... it’s a waste of FR time and money
but this is too formal lmao
Can any living human keep up with your speeded up build sections of your videos? I find them more of an annoyance, because you’re not meant to follow them, but they’re epileptically triggering to watch. Love your videos, but I always hate that part of them. There’s nothing for your eyes to rest on, or your brain to get a hold of. I get what you’re doing, but I think you could do that better?
I've wanted to join the rats since my rat refused to even let me drop him one of my low temp diamonds as thanks for reaching me within 10 minutes while I was still 320ly from the nearest populated system. I just don't think I'm good enough at navigation to be able to get to people fast enough
