I am really glad there is a RUclips community to help teach me this game. I loved playing it at my friends house as a kid. Lol also love that my 1500 dollar PC is being used most often to play a game from 1998
That is cuz it's that awsome and requires the use of one's brain! I too have friends that make fun of me for still playing a game i did as a wee kid. But it's fun, I can use it to relax without being online like dota, to control my gaming time and there is still more to learn apparently..YEY

Quite agree with Stronhold and Fortress, they are two very strange faction, and very difficult to play, but even my favourite. They are like B faction, but if you move good on the map they became S faction! The Stronhold rush with Behemoth and Thunderbird is Insane, Crack hagh skills are awesome, in few weeks you can easy destroy other heroes in small and medium maps. Fortress with a good pack of gorgongs and a good strategy with the magic skills can destroy other top tier units like nothing.
I always say there is 2 types of gamers: The one who likes to play, and the one who knows to play.
Unfortunately I'm the 1st type, and i was really surprised by this tier list.This was 1 of my childhood favorite games (well not HOTA, as it was none existent than, but mostly H3 and WoG) Nice video! Subbed! ;)
Ye in childhood i always Played fortresd and for me ot was tier A stat wise losing only to castle, then i saw what necro and conclux can do.
2:51 😂😂😂 I actually tried to play with the Jebus Cross Map Template as Cove and got the same issue. As soon as I heard with this accent "They are STUCK IN A SWAMP" I smiled a lot😂😂😂. I like Cove as a Faction, but they simply aren't going fast enough on the Swamp terrain. I tried to mitigate it by only allowing Stone Roads (no Dirt roads) but then it becomes a Railway😢😢😢

I, as a casual whos playing since i was a kid, playing single player jebus vs 3 insane enemies, never liked conflux.. feels like they are way too expensive compared to the strength of their units. but awesome content as always! im glad i found you Lexi!

I think to be fair, a tier list like this have to take in consideration the map size, like the expensive towns needs big maps with a lot of resources, and some other factions will do better in a quick and scarse environment
When I started off with Heroes 3, one of my criteria to whether or not a town was good was whether it was self-sufficient, basically. - So presuming I was stuck in an area with nowhere to go and nothing to do but wait for a while, how would that town handle it?
So one of the things I'd look for was how the resource income of that town balanced out to the cost of their units. - For example Castle I always recognized as having good units, but I also found them to be some of the most expensive. And similarly to Inferno where although the units are weaker, they've got special abilities that make them quite valuable.
The strongest towns in my books, though, were Conflux and Necropolis tied for 1st and 2nd place, and Rampart for 3rd. - Conflux particularly for the phoenixes, them being very fast and damaging, but also numerous, because you make double the number of phoenixes compared to any other tier 7 unit. And Necropolis for how its units are cheap and you can easily get them in massive numbers, with lots of immunities and benefits. And very easy to get huge numbers of units. And the usefulness of Animate Dead.
And Rampart mainly for the Fountain of Fortune and Dwarven Treasury that make it have the best economy of any single town, by far. - Any time I play random maps by myself I look to capture a Rampart just to use the dwarven treasury, then I'll hoard some months worth of units in my castles while I adventure and delay recruiting them as much as possible.
But this is all singleplayer perspective, really, or at most playing hot-seat with friends and family.

Lexi, can you make a tutorial for how to play Necropolis and can you make a tutorial for new people just picking up Heroes 3 or returning to the game after 20 years. Would be awesome if you have beginner, intermediate and expert tutorials on mechanics, tips&tricks. Been watching your content for a few weeks now and decided to download Horn of the Abyss but it's overwhelming - so many changes compared to when I played Heroes 3 when I was a child. Finally a town tier list video where Fortress is appreciated. It's weird seeing Stronghold being it's own tier, but the overall ranking wouldn't change I guess. I'd be okay with an empty C tier though to be fair. Stronghold still feels levels above Inferno.
Only noobs among noobs think Fortress is shit, most people have grown up to accept that it is at the very least decent.

@@webbowser8834 Really though? Heroes are good, Gnolls and specially Lizard Warriors are underrated, Serpent Fly is very convenient, and Hives were as much as a thing as here. What I'm missing?
@@Eggmith Long story short, in a game where movement rate is king having your main army max out at 5 speed is simply not great. Serpent Flies are by far the best thing Fortress has going for them and are a contender for best tier 3 in the game though.
@@webbowser8834 Hmmm, not sure though, Inferno haves to carry Imps as fodder and Demon's as a stack later, Dungeon goes mainly with stacks of Trogs, Necro with Skels, Tower absolutely needs to carry Master Gremlins, and Strong in the late game, not rarely carries normal Behe. I mean, they're all kinda slow...
Fortress in the later game will carry stacks of Wyverns and Angels, pretty much like everyone I guess. Anyway, what are the changes in HOTA?

I think Tower would be waaaay cooler of town progression would be connected to mage guild. Like if studying the spells help wizards and alchemists to create and handle more tough creatures. That would immediately make tower heroes very spellcastish and give the Tower feeling of true mage fraction
in a way you already need, mage guild to get mage tower, library to get up mage tower and mage tower to get all the important stuff...

The faction I'd want to live in, Rampart (so freaking beautiful and the music is nice), faction I like playing as, Necromancer. They really knocked it out of the park with the undead faction, it just oozes doom and darkness with fortress as a close second.
Sad to see cove so low been havin a blast playing them since returning guess i need to find a new castle to train before i hit the online.
Great video... I am not sure if cove can be this low.. they are definitely better than stronghold or almost put them in par with fortress

Great list, love me some dungeon. Black dragons remain my personal favourite units, still remember rekting my friends with them But I'm actually an inferno simp, the concept of demon farming getting rid of tier 1-3 units is fun concept

Can you explain some more of the reasoning to putting cove in D? Is this specific to changes that are made in Jebus templates? I'm wack so I don't play competitively, but they feel SUPER strong to me. I'm curious to know what I'm missing.

@@Lexiav We will see 1+ speed bonus on Wasteland native terrain for Factory. I am glad that development team of HotA are thinking about the older games when creating the new set of creatures for the upcoming faction.
@@VegardKristoffersen Yeah! They're doing such a wonderful job :D Most units are based off of some other things that exist withing the M&M lore and putting it together in ways that make sense. So despite this being new and fresh it doesn't feel out of place and there's something for most to love.

Your tierlists can i look at them when i only got hd edition on steam? And just ignore the stuff not exist in non complete edition? Or is there nerfs and buffs other then just new things?
There's nerfs and buffs between the editions, yeah. But for HD PvE-esque play, you can mostly do whatever except maybe Inferno if you play for the long game. Their units don't scale too well with numbers.
But yeah, this tier list is pretty representative to even HD edirion's strengths.

This video was mostly about the Jebus Cross template. The HD edition doesn't have any expansions so there is no random map generator and thus no Jebus Cross. Also, in the later versions 2 towns were added, fortress got buffed, stronghold got buffed, castle got nerfed, new artifacts, objects and creatures got added, bugs got fixed, etc.
If you have only the HD edition, the best thing I can suggest is deleting it :)
@@martinkunev9911 Mainly coz the base towns in HD are really set up as so. But if you play HD, you're playing against bots, and playing against bots can be done no matter how strong a faction is. But some civs will be weaker even then, and Inferno is infamously memed on as being a weak faction from the get go. Against bots. But you'll still win, so yeah.
If you play HD, I too recommend deleting it :P But if not, don't think too much about optimal gameplay, because your opponent won't.

Yeah! Horn of the Abyss has an online lobby to join and play with others. If you have any non-steam version of the game its a free installation atop of it as it's fan made, but still very professional.

Does anyone have any templates for random maps which limits the amount of available routes on a map so you don't run into this weird stalemate where the AI keeps trying to sneak past you by trying to take route A when you try to approach his town via route B.
Nothing is more infuriating then spending 50 turns running back and forth between the two routes untill you finally manage to catch him somehow.

When I played this game 20 years ago my friend always picked necropolis and I picked rampart. I think I never won a final battle against him. He had thousands of skeletons and my elves were destroyed by vampires etc. Do you think rampart stands a chance against necropolis in end game when necropolis has amassed a large army?
I play this game for 16 years and i have to say there's no chance for Rampart bro, the only one who can beat Necropolis is The Other Necropolis :)
Is my version of HOTA outdated or they removed Galthren from the game? Also I can't find any genie lamps despite tower being my favourite faction and playing them a lot
Galthran is banned ranloo sustitutes him and genie lamps are desactivated in random map templates you need to turn them on "also a lot of things like camping and banned Hero's can be turn on too"
Curious what you mean when you say if a faction get "hives"?
Had the same question and figured it out - he means Dragon Fly Hives, a map location that gives you Wyverns when you beat the guards. When he says pickets he means the same thing except you beat Wolf Raiders to get Cyclops. There are a few others like Griffin Conservatory, which gives you Angels.

Cove is my favorite, it really worka for me, why did you put it so low? Upgraded pirates and haspids are just amazing, Heroes are quite good, and the town is quite cheap. And you have got lots of Water magic in there.

They're ranked so low precisely because it's from the perspective of a competitive player. They aren't that good on the Jebus Cross template.

What is this "picket" that keeps being mentioned in various tier list videoes?
Internet says that it is "Wolf Raider Picket" building. You receive Cyclops for defeating Wolf Raiders that defend it.

Well i see like nothing changed i used to play HOMM3 online many years ago (about 20) and Conflux and Necropolis was always bannad basically (Diplomacy aswell ofc). So yeah this unofficial thing has changed almost nothing as i see :) . I totally agree with the tier list.

Can't really agree with cove being D. All units are pretty decent Ayssids are a huge punch and pirates are insanely good with Anabel. And they have cannons.
Yeah i dont get it either. Why is swamp a bad thing, if it's their native terrain? Only reason i can think of, is that swamp maybe doesn't spawn good objects?
swamp native terrain is bad because your scouts and other heroes get their movement impeded, i would think
@@alexmuller6752 They do not, unless you leave them with any units that aren't from Cove or Fortress(same native terrain as Cove). If anything, swamp is a major pain in the ass for your enemies.

Would be cool if there were separate game rooms for us single player players to transition to multiplayer without playing against people who know how to play online competitively.
How come you rate every inferno unit relatively high in creature tier lists, but overall place inferno the lowest?
I think it is because for online inferno, you need time to actually shine on bigger maps that you do not normally have, and also you need to apply a different tactics with Inferno that not everyone can think off/pull off. Personally when playing with some mates of mine, i had major success with Inferno. It is just that from start the imps and gogs suck a little bit and you need to play carefully.

@@MrClayman619 He can rate them high but that does not change the fact that:
1. Imps, not upgraded, are the weakest T1 units from starting towns, having one of lowest stats of all starting t1 creatures while being one of the most expensive (2 atk, 3 def for 50 gold, no special skills, and while their upgrade does raise the stats to 4/4 and 60 gold per unit, the upgrade is not the one you should be imo giving priority to. Not even talking about mana channel which is meh at best) the only worse in stats is Pixie from conflux, but she is faster, has only 1 def less, is flyer and costs half as much gold than Imp.
Gogs are kinda disliked because many players forget their upgrade, Magogs, you can friendly fire with their fireball effect unlike lets say cloud from Lich when you play as Necro. That leading to its low popularity between players. When your melee units are engaged, the Magogs cannot really shoot unless you feel like the damage to your melee units is worth it. If you do not feel like it and there aren´t any archers/casters to wait for, they are dead weight. The only thing Imps/Familiars are good for is sacrificing them and making demons outta them imo. The town is fun to play as and gets strong with correct playstyle, but the start is slow.

2) You can shoot terrain with magogs in HOTA. Magogs are ok unit imo.

This tier is for random maps mostly, right?
Yeah! Notably not for any random maps but for random maps generated off of the Jebus Cross template. In other templates the rankings would be different also.
Used in childhood call those castles - Castle ( Angel castle), Conflux ( element castle), Cove (pirate castle), Dungean (underground castle), Fortress (swamp castle), inferno (hell castle), necropolis (dead castle), rampart (nature castle), stronghold ( barbarian castle), tower ( north pole castle).
I love those names except that tower should be Himalaya castle imo
For some example on how powerful Necromancy is:
In the recent finals of H3 Polish Championships (Szopa666 vs Dawidu) Szopa got Vidomina and farmed Skelies for 2 weeks getting great tempo. And it wasn't on Jebus Cross :P
Next week in the place match on of the players did the same with Thant, also not on Jebus map...
u forgot to mention Szopa was playing Ramp with Ufretin as second hero ^^
I feel I have to disagree with Cove.
Cove has very fast units - tier 1 and 3 - definitely the most useful ones for early game. Or even maining Derek gives even 3rd fast unit D2-3 makes this town by far the easiest on the very early game. You mentioned that Shakti is able to almost beat maxi hive 111. Cove also can do that with Cassiopeia. Cove also has a good mid-game units - Nixes which are incredibly powerful tanks for utopias or conservatories. Saw many videos about autobattle beating maxi hive d3 with nothing other than town pop. Heroes on this town also aren't bad. Begining at Cassio being first pick because of army she guarantees, taking up to Eovacius with his crazy clone ending at Anabel, that guarantees a bit more pirates for slower templates. In my opinion this town is well deserved to be on the same tier as Stronghold - Strong, since the slow nerf is so much weaker. The banks are way tougher for wolf riders only. Sometimes they need an assist from behemoths.
Terrain penalties between Strong's and Cove's aren't super different. A little better its going through Strongs terrain, but its also not that managable.
Towers being B tier also is very strange for me. People really dislike lamps only because they are small, so they can spawn very far from road. It's not easy to get through the snow. In fact, Tower cannot fight with tanky enemies - master gremlins have only 8 arrows and without them, they are straight up garbage. The only thing that is helping this town in a bit more difficult fights are golems, with their magic immunity 50% and their powerful health. I agree, Tower guaratees the best mage guild in the game. But on JC its straight up useless. Most of the time the game ends up in 124. There is no time to build up mage guild, do rolls and library in this time. Only on mt_fw its possible to manage, because of the flux biom near the start area. But its trash here, where most of the time you get spells from artifacts or pandora boxes. In my opinion this town doesn't deserve even top C tier. For me its exactly lower C or even top D tier.
Hey! Yeah cove has crazy early bank taking potential as i mentioned, but the problem is, is that they are unable to convert that into a good, fast midgame due to their horrible terrain, leaving them stuck with their cyclops, angels, unable to chain any other banks/boxes/items effectively.
And i rarely see games of tower without at least a pack of master genies by day 3, which would be enough for most biome content easily. If not for their terrain they'd be probably A+.
Most people 600+ rating that i have played trade pretty accurately based on this tier list, with only very slight deviations from it, usually just differences in how much they bet between 2 factions rather than actually swapping rankings around.
I like how even if most of the necro units are considered hot trash AND necromancy has been halved they are still top tier 😂

i hire a bunch of lvl 1 hero and give 7 x 1stacc sprite(fast gal) and start weakning enemy hero
Doesn't Titan's Thunder require Expert Wisdom ? How can you hire a bunch of lvl heroes and start nuking the enemy hero ?
stronghold vs tower - Would you pay for tower? How much?
I think the correct trade would be the tower player to pay about 2-3k to the stronghold player. However i really hate playing tower, so i would bet 2k immediately, usually people don't pass on the first bet, and after they type 2.1k or 2.5k i would immediately pass, and let them take tower. Usually works :)

Who is Cove?
You dont sell me Cove being D, Jeremy with a single cannon can clear pretty much anything while their T1 units kite, Sea Dogs are their real cheat units having the gorgon's ability merged with no retaliation on RANGED. and it's fast and no melee penalty and can be massed.Than unit alone and the cannon puts it to at least A tear. Easiest expanding if you dont count broken Luna tactics.Ofc im playing against AI and on impossible so I guess PvP differs.
S tier is Necro conflux
A tier is knight tower dungeon
B tier fortress inferno
F tier is rampart stronghold
For OG game.
I always find conflux to be the worst one with inferno :P.

Not sure, but creatures alone don't make a whole faction. Besides, he is ranking factions on Jebus Cross template.
Hardest game i will never learn.
Tower deserve much lower. Most expensive castle, and the only good creature (beside tier 7) are nagas. Fortres is A, Stronghold is B, Castle is B, Rampart is A for the good defense, but suck at ofense whith the useless pegasus. Dungeon sufer from manticores to but the rest of the creatures are A+ so they compensate, if manticores where better like dread knight Tier S dungeon.
PS Necro and conflux are not S tier, they are SSS BANNED TIER.
Everyone is always saying how the Necro town is the best. In multiplayer I find 99% of people either choose the Necro town or the Conflux meaning Necro town sucks so much ass. So if you're doing it against the computer yeah. But in multiplayer cause of the fact that everyone plays the same 2 factions I'd say absolutely not.
Cyra diplomacy plus double lvl 5 spells makes Tower the BEST faction; to make it work on a high level with Necropolis you need some luck in setting up your Necromancy with artifacts
diplomacy is banned in ranked games

Necro Faction units are over-rated. The heroes / Necromancy carries the faction Past B Tier.

Agree with the list except Dungeon should be rank B. Castle and Rampart are good with gaining gold and chains, I think those two features are way better than gaining 1 free level, additional mana, and even additional tier 5, 6, or 7 from other factions. Even if the game turns into turtle mode, the other 2 factions are also better and would probably have the bigger army.
Not shitting, game because of the spoilers has been destroued.
