Ed was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot, a fighter instructor, and a forward air controller in combat in Korea whose job it was to fly slowly over enemy territory and get shot at so the fighters could take out the gun emplacements. He was more of a man than just Johnny's sidekick.
Here Ed was obviously devastated over Johnny’s passing ; To have known him and to have been such good friends for so many years and do the TV show together and now journey is gone and Ed feels empty I’m sure. It sounds as though he may cry anytime. I feel terrible for him talking and trying to be brave. Death It’s so horribly sad and all we can do is just try and get through the sorrow and move forward. Carson and McMahon were almost like two great jazz musicians, setting each other up. (Leno has what Madeline Kahn doesn't like to see coming toward her, I'll give him that.)
Only letterman had potential to be as good and unique and as the best but because he was diluted in an era when there are so many while Carson stood alone, his brightness was dimmed by the attention of the masses and ratings due to people tuning in to other stations and options. The uncooperative dog in the live Alpo spot was probably the best thing that could've happened for Alpo. I'll bet Alpo executives loved it. It made the spot both hilarious and therefore, memorable. If everything had gone according to plan, everyone would've forgotten about it, and that would've been that. But because something had to be done due to the dog not eating the food as it was supposed to, Johnny, in his inimitable manner, took what could've been an otherwise disastrous blooper for the sponsor and made comedic gold out of it. In other words, he and Ed made lemonade out of lemons. No wonder NBC did everything they could to hang onto Johnny.
Something people may not realize - back in the"day" Johnny and Ed would go after the show taping and have a few - on occasion someone would maybe get over served- Ed was a Marine - Ed wasn't someone to mess around with - he kept Johnny out of a few scrapes - Billy Martin could have used his diplomacy ! You can't fly a plane & have "acrophobia" at the same time. He flew about 70-80 scouting missions in this non-armed single engine plane. He probably carried a sidearm, but that was about it. If he had been shot down, and captured, I don't think he would have lived to see the day of his release.

I got the following from RUclips and it may not be a complete list: May 16, 1985 May 2, 1990 on phone November 11, 1993 on phone May 9, 1994 meet in cars May 13, 1994 In addition, Carson would send Letterman jokes for his monologue and Letterman would do his golf swing after telling one of them.
Actually, that's not true--Carson was MAJORLY pissed off with Leno, and I saw all of this going down in the press years later when "those-in-the-know" finally started revealing all this stuff to the media (I was already in my early 20s when Carson left The Tonight Show). Carson had made it clear to the execs at NBC he very much wanted Letterman to take over The Tonight Show, and Leno knew it. So Leno went behind Carson's back & pulled off some sort of wheeling-dealing subterfuge (which isn't hard to imagine given what he did to Conan) and wrested it away for himself. Carson was NOT happy, and it is no coincidence he never appeared on Leno's show. As a matter of fact, I don't believe he ever spoke with Leno again after that. And BTW, Johnny actually appeared several times on Letterman.
