4 years later but I disagree. I think Conan's current show is his best. Network doesn't matter anymore and his TBS show is his own show. Conan isn't made for the Tonight Show, however much he wanted it. I think Conan may be the best comic on the planet, and his current show is the perfect platform for him.
"If I don't see you again, have a good life!"... A wonderful drinking toast and the most thoughtful way of paying homage to the life and work of someone like Ed McMahon.
Ed McMahon was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot and instructor and a combat forward air controller in Korea whose job was to fly around in a small plane and get the enemy to shoot at him so that the fighters could attack the gun emplacement. He was more than just Carson’s sidekick.
Conan had the "TONIGHT" show so briefly (before Leno took it back) that I never saw him host it, but he and Richter are magnificent here, in tribute to the greatest Second Banana of All Time.
I had never seen this. Conan hit just the right tone with this tribute that didn’t do something ridiculous such as overthink it or by waiting until later in the show.
They never gave him a real chance at making the show his. I actually believe that the owners of NBC, whether it was RCA, GE or now with Comcast came to a conclusion that it would be better for them financially, and in order to keep control of their programming, if the 11:30 slot never became the monolith it became under Carson again. I really believe that. Why else would they have Leno languish 2 different times for all of those years, and then have Fallon, who just never seemed cut for the gig, run it as the face for all this time? I don't know what Conan's Tonight would have been, but when I saw Fallon, I really wanted him to be good, and he just isn't. When he started incessantly saying, "Oh my gosh!!" and playing game shows with celebrities - and that was the entirety of the skit (no satire, no mock, no rib, no bit whatsoever!) - I knew that show was garbage. And let me at least have the balls to say that the Roots fucking suck. Only in our sanitized/propagandized/celebcentric world of corporate media in the US can an 11:30pm show be so damn safe. If I were running one of the networks, I'd shake the fucker up hard. I'd put on hosts that would drink, smoke (seriously, if a network moved the 11:30 to Colorado and the host was vaping weed with a few of the guests, you don't think the meters would fucking rocket??), and at least speak to the audience and their guests like fucking adults. Honestly, I really feel that there could easily be better public access programming produced than Tonight is now.
I was yelling HEYO!!! as a random exclamatory expression of approval for years before somebody sat me down and said "Haven't you ever watched the Tonight Show? You're stealing Ed's schtick!". Of course, I had to watch. Johnny and Ed were 1000% times funnier than anything Letterman, Leno, Kimmel or Fallon have ever produced.
Ed was a lot more than just Johnny's sidekick. He was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot, an instructor for F4U corsair fighters, and was a forward air controller (FAC) during the Korean war, flying a Cessna O-1 bird dog. His job was to fly slowly over enemy territory in order to draw anti-aircraft fire so the fighters could attack the gun emplacements. He retired as a full colonel. Johnny Carson was a guy who did everything with his mouth. To be known only as Johnny's sidekick must have been tough for Ed.
In a two person comedy team, the name of the straight man comes first: Abbot and Costello, Rowen and Martin, Burns and Allen, and so on. This was McMahon and Carson, a truly wonderful, immortal class act....They were on the air for 30 years, and they've been off the air now even longer that.... It seems like it was only yesterday, sniff....
Oh wow! I am so late! Idk End McMahon died! I followed him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson; his show with Dick Clark, TVs Bloopers and Practical Jokes, and when he hosted Star Search. So sad. I still watch him on Syndicated episodes of Johnny Carson every evening at 9PM CST.

Poor guy should have been given a chance and he used his own money to provide his staff with severance pay.

NBC couldn't have screwed that up worse. From announcing it five years in advance killing any buzz to putting Leno on as his horrible lead in, it was done before it started. The whole thing was ridiculous.

Idk Conan O'Brien was forced against his own will off the show. All the good people are leaving late-night TV. I don't really watch Jimmy Fallon anyway.
Angela Norwood NBC wanted to push the Tonight Show with Conan to 12:05 so Jay Leno could have his old time slot back for his 30 minute talk show. Conan refuses to do so because it would push back the Tonight Show and Late Night. NBC wouldn’t negotiate it. So Conan left the network.
@@nathanpeoples8410 They stupidly gave Leno a terrible half-hour show that completely bombed as Conan's lead in. This was after they announced five years in advance that Conan was taking over, which destroyed any buzz over time. Conan was put in a garbage position from the get-go.
NO. Fallon is merely a symptom. NBC destroyed the Tonight Show with it's bumbling host revolving door. It is often joked that when Guy Lombardo died, he took New Year's Eve with him. The same can be said about Carson and late night television. I doubt that even Letterman or Conan could have saved it. Maybe, NBC should have retired the Tonight Show when Carson retired. Keep time period, but redesign the product.
R.I.P Ed McMahon, 1923-2009.
"May I have some silence"
"Sure, you've had it many times before"
Conan should still be hosting The Tonight Show. He did not deserve what happened to him.
I thought Conan was the last of anything good about network television and they screwed him.
his ratings sucks right?
Conan fans need to suck it up. He's not a God. He did in fact deserve what happened to him because NBC ratings fell.

Well said.
Very noble and touching segment by Conan O'Brien. A class act.
When Ed passed Johnny announced his arrival in heaven with, "Herrrrrrrrrrres Ed!"
Though I love Conan so much, none of these guys today can hold a candle to Johnny Carson. He is basically a league of himself.
Conan would agree with you. No one can touch Carson.
Ed McMahon was a carrier-qualified fighter pilot and instructor and a combat forward air controller in Korea whose job was to fly around in a small plane and get the enemy to shoot at him so that the fighters could attack the gun emplacement. He was more than just Carson’s sidekick.
This guy has alot of respect for the past. !! Which makes him the man
He even was the co host of the jerry lewis telethon

Conan always classy when he needs to be! I love this tribute to Ed.
Lose fallon, bring back conan. He is the only host who can bring the tonight show grace back
NBC should drop Fallon and bring in Craig Ferguson to host The Tonight Show.
@@kevinnelson66 Either Conan or Craig would be a tremendous upgrade. Personally, I’d choose Craig, but Conan would be good too.
