update from Maui. suicides are soaring, all are being kicked out any day now, 8000 instant homeless, no jobs, no house , no $,,,they even hired the dude that cut our water off , back. its gets worse
I'm sure the tourist that visits parts of Maui will be confronted by locals and it might not be a really great vacation at this time. The Maui county officials wants to reopen as they have a home to go to.Not the Lahaina victims.
The county really needs the money from outsiders to fill the void to run the system.
The county wont release any information about the fire and timeline on what events happened on that very day,8/8/23.
The Mayor was suppose be in charge but he said,"I don't know who was in charge" What kind of answer is that? To much critical information being held and this is how victims are treated.
People need to know that Maui county officials emergency response was a failure.Nobody really knew what to do.The sirens were never sounded, water was not available for the MFD,roads leading out of the burning area were blocked by police.
Baby chicks are always a heartwarming promise of new life.
I wish I could do something to help, in the meantime I care and share, like, and pray. The people’s losses are immeasurable and way heavy upon my heart.
I believe that if tourists are going to go there. They should be required to pay a toll fund for the people in Lahaina who were affected by this evil.
So they can rebuild the town.
Its there home
This makes me sick to my stomach seeing our own citizens being treated like trash while our government lets the entire world come here and they give them everything they need .
well unfortuantely the government has brainwashed half the country into believing that helping Americans is Communist.
So no, the only thing America will do is.... War.... and.... GIving more money to RIch people, thats all this country is allowed to do, because thats Patriotic, and NOT Communist.
Exactly. I just watched a video that showed a city in Illinois that got $8M in federal funds to help with providing for the surge of migrants in their community. Here we have actual Americans in Hawaii being shuffled like livestock. It's tragic.
Exactly Iam in California our government doesn’t care about its own people soon people will march on Washington
@@khismet this !!! Why do immigrants who come here illegally have more rights and privileges than citizens?
Tell Biden you are illegal and he will send money
rename Maui to Ukraine or Israel, and then the president will help you
I was in tears watching this. THIS IS NOT OK!!! How is this legal in our country?!?! I watched Josh Green at a live say that NO family will be left homeless with the reopening. THIS doesn't look like what he said!! These families GoFundMe should be listed on your page here for us to help. I love you sweet people. ❤
But but diversity and illegals
Why are all these homeowners using Red Cross money? What about their homeowners insurance? Did they not have additional living expense? What’s going on with the repairs on their house?
If Josh Green is talking, he is lying.
@@river4462 if they have a mortgage, they have to have hazard insurance. If they can’t afford or qualify to get a policy on their own, then the mortgage will take out lender placed insurance to protect their interest. In turn that outrageous fee will be applied to their mortgage payment but it only covers the structure and nothing else. So I’m thinking if any of them had mortgages, they probably got insurance through their lender not knowing it’s costs more for less coverage. Sad.
he's kicking out 8, 000 any day now..we will have 8, 000 instant homeless, jobless, car less,,,suicides are soaring
Out of all the Hawaiian islands Maui was always my favorite It always felt like a small close knit community, I love the laid back carefree atmosphere , The block long Banyon trees in Lahaina were my favorite to spend hours viewing. As much as I want to go back I couldn't knowing the people of Maui are still suffering. God bless Maui & it's people
Some hot real estate these days
Thankfully we sent our money to illegals the Ukraine and Israel
Here's the thing, Maui, for better or for worse, is heavily dependent on tourism. Lahainatown is where the fire happened. South Maui, Kihei, Wailea...were NOT affected by the fire but they're losing millions. Ka'anapali was not affected but has been closed by the government. They're reopening in phases. FEMA and the Red Cross are putting some people up in the hotels in Ka'anapali beach and elsewhere. Many of the big hotel chains who also own timeshares in Maui have housed their own and made sure their employees are signed up for all available assistance. These same hotels have let people who simply aren't ready to come back to work stay home. Some of the local chains have paid their staff in spite of them being closed. Slowly they're repoening. The media is doing NO favors by saying there are protestors and no one wants visitors. That simply is NOT true. go to Maui. Tip generously. Go out to eat, go on guided tours. THAT'S how they come back.
The Hawaiian people are strong and resilient. They deserve their land and help. Maui No Ka Oi.
They only survive with tourists money. Almost everyone that lives there works in some fashion for the tourist industry. The whole state cannot survive without tourism. I love Lahaina, it was my favorite place on any of the islands. Why are we not rebuilding this town for them? Our federal government cares more about illegal border crossers than our own citizens. Where is FEMA? They should be able to put up shelter for every single family that lost a home while the rubble is cleared and we help them rebuild.
Sadly, so many people do not feel the same as you. All they see is the inconvenience of having to change their vacation plans. Or the ones who grumbled initially that their accommodations were canceled. They are so self-involved that they can't and don't see the big picture. All they see is how this affected them. Shameful. Truly Shameful. And worse. Are the tourists who purposely travel to locations. Such as Lahaina. To see the destruction. They get off on seeing things like this. They find it enjoyable, and fun to do. Those folks, IMHO are subhuman. I'm hoping that anyone who chooses to travel to Maui. They take a good look inside of themselves. And determine what is the bigger priority. Go to Maui. Knowing full well that Maui has so much more to offer. And make that conscious decision to NOT travel to the West Side. And make arrangements elsewhere. Giving the West Side Community the time and space they deserve to grieve for THEIR losses. Rebuild their homes and lives. To care for their devastated children and other family members. Or, go. And expect aloha to be bestowed upon you by a few thousand of the most emotionally damaged, financially devastated, disrespected, heartbroken, and traumatized AMERICANS you will probably ever meet again in your life. Oh, and don't get pissed off when there seems to be a disproportionate amount of homeless FAMILIES on the beach in front of your hotel.......the choice is yours. I hope you choose humanity.....( @sonja619purrsnpoms4 ...I'm sorry for hijacking your comment. I tend to get wordy sometimes. And this was in no way meant as an attack on you personally. I thank you for choosing humanity😊)
Hawaiian Government should be ashamed of themselves! Our FEMA should be ashamed as does Red Cross! The Hawaiian people deserve so much better! People should never forget what happened in Louisiana after Katrina and in Puerto Rico after several Hurricanes like Maria recently. The mainland government should take care of its citizens.
Louisiana doesn't need anyone to speak on its behalf. We have cleaned up, rebuilt much of what was lost and have moved on. Why are people so adamant about sitting in misery?
A lot of Hawaiians don't consider themselves Americans. I love Hawaii but they really need a better attitude if they want help from the mainland.
How much is NYC spending on the illegal immigrants? It's been reported about $400 per day per person. Every one of these people needs a secure home, and food until their home or business is rebuilt by the government. Who caused this disaster?
@@erikh9991 we get military bases and they get a good economy.
Don't count on FEMA for help I lost my home in Hurricane Ian I got a check for $700 nothing else
This is why we worry about our own country not anywhere else
I can’t imagine how lonely and forgotten people must be feeling. It takes WEEKS to recover from the stress of a week-long blackout when your home survives. I cannot imagine how stressful this must be. I would forever lose hope in my government and state legislation if this happened to ANYONE in my community.
At least we are helping illegals the Ukraine and Israel (sarcasm)

Why is the government at fault? It was a wildfire. What a tragedy.
@@weebeevillaging587 You too?
I don’t think it takes weeks…more like months to years, even once you have things rebuilt the emotional scares and trauma will still be there.
I was born and raised in the islands, not on Maui but another island, and watching the events post fire, I can say that I am extremely ashamed of how our so-called government has treated the people of Lahaina, or what is left of it ... much more to say, but nuff said ...
Didn't anybody have insurance??? It certainly doesn't look like it.
It's been that way since the US military took the islands over. It's disgraceful, but yet again, the US government doesn't care about black and brown people. This is nothing new unfortunatly.
@@YourTransmissionRepairare you a natural bone head, or was it taught to you by your parents? That is if you had them growing up.
@e-4051, that is a legitimate question that has not been addressed by the news. Are people receiving funds from home owners insurance or not? Do you know?
@@YourTransmissionRepair Most Homeowners insurance will not cover this disaster. What happened was a borderline result of a Hurricane to our south which caused windstorms through canyons and the grass was already tinder dry due to long periods of draught. Many homeowners companies refuse to cover Hawaii at all, like many parts of California. Much of whether or not you get coverage is dependent on where you live. Plus County Government seems to be stunned. It was a sort of perfect storm, and relief has been remarkably slow.
They don't care about these people they are not Rich or Wealthy
Tell them again because they did not hear you.
How can people even have a vacation when there is so much sadness right now
Tourism is way down on Maui. Other Islands are picking up the slack.
Right?!! It's thoughtless!!!!
Greed and selfishness.
Umm the Businesses There Need the Money! Regardless! If they have a business they can still contribute towards their fellow ppl!
I have 2 vacation rental condos in a west Maui resort and the employees need tourism. My guest who have returned have volunteered and shown love and support, spent money at groceries, restaurants, rental equipment. Maui depends on tourism
It would be nice if MSM would call out the Biden administration for their lack of action in this matter. Everyone is up in arms right now about the U.S. response to what is going on in Israel; well, how about what is the U.S. response to what happened in Lahaina or Palestine, OH? Why is it always America last?
Biden approved FEMA aid 7 hours after the governor issued a request. Biden even visited Maui.
Sorry but Joe Biden is not the issue here. And if you think it is, you are willfully blind.
My heart is aching for the residence of Maui. I pray they will recover from this. Please do not sell your land and look out for real estate sharks. They are on the prowl
Yeah, the sharks are the gov't wanting to make it a "smart city". Josh Green said so within days after the fire. He had his visions of what to do with it. That's why he put a policy into place where nobody can sell their home or land. Cause he got plans.
Take a close look at what you are saying. These people are completely controlled by the government. They have been kept away from their own land. Now, they can't sell and they can't rebuild. They don't have long-term housing. What would you expect them to do when the government is the cause of the many of the problems. How did the fire start? Who is responsible? You warn about real estate sharks? Really?
they took they land, suicides are soaring, and there's literally zero places to live . zero. and any day now all will be kicked out , 8000 instant homeless.
Thanks ABC news for the airtime 🙏🏽
It’s brutal, but without tourists, there’s no lifeblood to employ ppl and rebuild. Both options are really tough. Tourism accounts directory or indirectly for 75% of Maui's economy. It's not even a question that we need tourists back asap, no matter how difficult.
That has to be frustrating and difficult for these families to live this way. I hope permanent housing will become reality for them and soon.
They voted for it with Biden, just like the Jews voted for the Israel terrorist attack with Biden. Maybe they need to stop voting against their best interests.
Rents for 2 bedroom apartments in most areas of Maui are at $2,000 per month.
@@vernonsheldon-witter1225greed doesn't have a reprieve

@@susannpatton2893 Funny how the fire did not burn rich liberals houses
Tourists are not being welcomed into the Lahaina area, such false reporting...it's literally fenced off. Maui (95% rest of the island) is dependent on tourists bringing that money. If tourists are unwelcome, I doubt Maui and its locals will survive at all.
Governor Green and mayor Bisson need to let the fire servivors of the Maui Masacre stay in the hotels...
Red Cross got about a zillion dollars donationed for Maui relief... Too bad the administration fees don't leave enough for housing the people.
And tourism needs to go to the south Maui and upcountry for fun... they need the business too.
I don't give Josh Green half a chance at re-election. Less so for Mayor Bissen. They both act like they were hit with a stun gun. Just thankful that Tulsi Gabbard is not in office anymore.
Why is the government not helping? Why is insurance not helping? What has happened to Jeff Bezos $100 million he donated? What happened to Oprah & Duane's donations? People need to have their homes replaced. Why did our President say he would only help with $700 for each family? This is a horrible nightmare for these people.
$700 for immediate relief, please research the whole narrative before commenting. Millions have been spent by multiple agencies, both private and public( govt)
Exactly. 100 million? Where is it?
@@raptureready5004 None of us are getting these answers.
@@vernonsheldon-witter1225 I noticed that. These people need to be brought to court.
They will have their homes replaced if they have insurance to cover it or they take out FEMA loans. But it’s going to take time. They have to clean everything up and get basic services restored first. And that seven hundred was only to immediately help buy some basic necessities. No other president did that immediately after a disaster. And the president never said that. Many people and organizations have been donating food and clothing, generators and other items.. And They have been offered FEMA loans and loans from the better business bureau for rebuilding businesses. That’s what the government usually offers after disasters. So obviously more than that seven hundred has been offered to them..I am surprised they are still paying for hotel rooms instead of building tent cities or shacks for them to stay in temporarily. They need to do that soon.
Their home insurance companies should be footing the bill for housing. Our military should help them, as well! Open the golf courses and make tent cities, if need be. This is ridiculous, and can’t be happening! 🤬
We have Ohana on Oahu and totally love Maui.
This horrible tragedy is heartbraking.
It is so emotional trying to decide when to re store tourism to West Maui.
Everyone has different needs economically and when to go back to work, there is no easy answer.
The local, state, and federal governments are making this even more difficult.
The federal government giving multi billions $ to foreign allies.
American citizens need that economic aid now to recover and re start their lives.
Take care of the people of Maui first then start giving again to allies.
Maui No Ka Oi !
Maui Strong !!
That is too much!!!!
People seem to have lost all sense of priority and care for others in the search for to appease their own selfish pleasures.
As a resident of Hawaii, this is always in the front of our minds. How to balance tourism which would fund much of the recovery of Lahaina in opposition to the lives of the people of West Maui. Rents have skyrocketed on the Valley Isle. Many will doubtless have to leave, since Maui was one of the most expensive places in the State. I am glad I am not sitting in Mayor Bissen's chair right now.
President Biden has made a commitment to restore Maui. Where is the restoration and rebuilding? It's a very small community and every one of these people should have a new home or business in the process of being rebuilt. Is this more empty promises from the Democrats? Just like student loan debt forgiveness, low inflation, soaring economy, global peace?
My family of 10 had a trip planned to Maui at the end of this month but we felt that this was not a good time to go as the people of Maui might need the condo so we cancelled over a month ago. We could not go and enjoy ourselves knowing people there were suffering and homeless. Praying for all you Maui residents. 🙏❤
aloha from Maui... 1 simple reason...its toxic as a mofo. all air , water, soil , blood etc samples are testing off the charts for tens / hundreds of toxins.
I am so sorry, we are mourning with you! I hope tourists THINK about what the locals have lost and the time they need to heal!
Meanwhile the state loses money from tourism tax as well as businesses losing tourist income. And the locals still have their hand out wanting money. Let the state make the money to give to them.
More time to heal as the government has turned its back on the people? Sure. They have offered an outdoor tent while spending BILLIONS on foreign conflicts?
Deplorable. Keep Maui people in your heart and keep these updates coming. We need to know about this and help them. ❤
Don't take this the wrong way. Just something to think about. I feel for the great loss.
I lived right next to Paradise Fire Camp Fire. Paradise & Maui have a lot in common. But as alway having my eyes on Maui, because I was born there. Both Maui and Paradise are horrifically ugly to the homeless population. And now they get a sence of that feeling of utter helplessness. Homeless people are people who have gone through trauma, just like them. The whole of Lahaina and Paradise are on equal ground. And there are still camp fire survivors in 2023 that are being treated like dirt. Treat people with respect and dignity. And the ones who are no well, be nice.
Just put them on blast. Name all the tourist who are disrespecting the lands that are still filled with the ashes of the dead. These people are barely grieving.
This is an excellent video. Mahalo abc news. I am from Lahaina and seeing people i know in this video just breaks me. We are all going through such a hard time
BS from the local Politicians, where’s all the Federal and State help, what happened to all the money donated to help the people? Auwe…🤬
there's always gonna be scammers even though the majority of people are good. The dude that filed a complaint with the civil rights bureau did the correct thing bcz he called them on their BS
I'm curious as to what the residents of other natural disasters do. Tornadoes wipe out whole towns. How do those people get back to normal? Do they return to work right away? Or wait for months? When does the idea of a new normal set in?
After about two weeks for us. We had to make a living. Find a new place to live .
In Louisiana we GO BACK TO LIFE IMMEDIATELY!
From Oklahoma the last big tornado we were in hit our neighborhood it took a week to get it cleaned up and no one missed a day of work. No one was put in hotels if they lost their homes, you just have to figure it out like an adult. Red cross was there for like 3 days giving sandwiches and water then after they were like yea bye figure it out. I mean this is truly a tragedy but my mind was blown how much help they got. And in no way am I saying they shouldn't help them im more talking shite on what they don't do. These services are supposed to help but really do the least amount.
I'm from Louisiana, we help our neighbors clean up and start rebuilding. Our churches, sheriffs office, etc, feed people and provide temporary shelter or whatever is available. We do whatever it takes to get back on our feet and move on. The key part is to move on because you don't want to perpetuate the trauma of the experience. Just be grateful that you survived and have the opportunity to live another day..
When my house flooded with 10ft of water one year I received FEMA money the first month(one payment) and that's it. A local hotel was offering reduced rates to stay so I got a single night there because it was $88. The other 8 days my three kids and I were sleeping in our car or on friend's floors. We never knew where we'd sleep each night. We paid for that single night in a hotel the night before Easter so that the Easter Bunny could come visit them. But they still went to school and I still went to work. Life moved on because there was no other choice.
Oprah & Jeff Bezos live there, they have much money & land there. They could help if they wanted to.
Well it’s a tourist spot. Where are you going to get the money to rebuild without the money coming from tourist? Yea it’s sad but at the same time, life must move on for those who are left to live! What your going to wait for government aid? Yeah sure there’s probably some! But at the same time, you also gotta help yourself.
Maui stay strong, the people is watching the governor the mayor and everyone working for them..
I feel so awful for these ppl. It is a mess. Stop electing the same officials. As far as tourism goes you need it to survive. It might seem horrid but you need it. The very hotels you are staying at will go out of business. I am so sorry for the ppl of Maui. My parents lived there for many years. 😢
The government should pay for their rooms in those hotels
So tourist need to stay out of Maui at this time so the residents have places to stay. Go to the other islands or somewhere else. Americans a need to help support our fellow Americans for a change.
The tourists are not all Americans
@@Joce123 Normally the majority are Americans and Japanese. So again need to help the residents of Maui with there request.
So then you and everyone else need to send the money for that to happen. You can’t expect everyone else there to survive with nothing.
@@thaismatsumoto So you can send money to pay to help all the American residents that are displaced due to having no homes or possessions and being thrown into the streets with nowhere to stay due to tourist coming to Maui and taking over their accommodations.
@@jsterling6805…No ,actually you should, since you want to steal other people’s livelihoods. . Those aren’t their accommodations forever. They need to go apply for loans like we had to after hurricane Sandy. And figure out where to stay on their own. It’s been two months. That’s a lot longer than most people get after a disaster…. That’s how it works here in America. If you’re so concerned, why don’t you let some of them stay with you? And find homes for the rest Why haven’t you already?
My heart is broken for them!
How do you think they feel then ?
UHHH HEART BROKEN@@leanneadams2549
I’ve seen more leadership at the community level in Maui County than in the entirety of Honolulu, so while those on the ground in Maui have appealed to the elected, the majority of who prioritized a substantial pay raise for themselves, they have failed to listen to, and to do what is in the best interest for those in West Maui. I hope anyone who organized and helped others run for the highest offices at the local, state, and federal governments. Hawaii cannot rely exclusively on tourism for the economy.
Then what do you suggest as a working solution. All of us here know the role tourism plays in the economy. So what is the answer?
@@vernonsheldon-witter1225 That is a very good question, and I would ask those who experienced the Maui fire because they know what was needed immediately and what was lacking; and I would ask those who protect, preserve, and perpetuate Hawaiian culture, because any proposals should be conducive to the cultural heritage of Hawaii. I can speculate that Hawaii can invest in disaster preparedness: adequate shelters, PPE, and whatever else is flown in or shipped to the islands after natural disasters, the healthcare industry, agriculture, affordable housing, infrastructure development, sustainable clean energy and technology.
How can people be treated this way?

Heartbreaking to hear this man. Too soon for tourism and lookieloos.
while i agree with you but since the government isn’t helping much wouldn’t tourist help people earn money an influx money into maui economy
Tourism is the base of the economy. With NO INCOME, these people will be forced into outdoor tents as the government has forgotten these people. Wake UP.
Heartbreaking.
Someone needs to manage this money donated for these people to make sure these people don’t become homeless. Where is Oprah now?
Oprah lives on Maui most of the time and has literally given millions to disaster relief. And she continues to do so. This is not Orpah's job, Hawaii is a US State. Insurers have been given a green light to discontinue insuring Hawaiians. Over the past decades Hawaii has been used as a target range, a Toxic waste dump, and a plantation. Now it seems to be just a tourist destination. Americans of ALL political persuasions need to get it together.
I hope to visit Maui one day. Hawaii is an incredible treasure. But please give Maui time to grieve and heal.
Locally there are rumors of suicides of some lahaina residents who are choosing to end their lives because of their trauma and depression.
Oh my gosh how awful.
Our world is upside down and America is going down the toilet fast! Thank you for this report.
Somehow the chickens are fine, even have new chicks, yet people have to wear lots of protective gear?? That doesn’t make sense…
Would you eat one?
I’m crying with this man.😢
The area was not "badly damaged." It was destroyed!!

Unacceptable they have to “ Move” every 30 days is WRONG!!!
We need to stand with and STAND UP with Maui / Lahaina!! Take care of these TRAUMATIZED PEOPLE!!!
In God We Trust!!

Where is FEMA? Not that FEMA always does a great job but they have put up tiny homes in the past for victims of disasters. The state should be responsible for housing these people and assist in clean up.
They provide temporary housing and then offer low cost loans. Or The Small Business Bureau offers loans for those who lost their business. They don’t do permanent housing.
we are all homeless now
So heartbreaking still, I couldn't imagine going there for a vacation while locals are hurting so much. Sending money and prayers is the best way to respect their grieving process and will be years not just a few months. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I am so sorry. Blessings to you all❤
Profits over people.
At least a YEAR!!! These people have lost EVERYTHING! EVEN LOVED ONES !!!! If you have ANY respect you won’t go into that area AT ALL ! And if you have ANY heart you’ll donate whatever you can ! And please please not to FEMA because they’ve been staying at the 5 star Maui motel at $1,000 a night if you want to contribute to that. Anyways, I just wish I could do more !
Yes True
I find it sickening that tourists would consider going there at this time. And how can the hotels be facing bankruptcy if they don’t have tourists when they’re full of displaced people and the hotel is being PAID by FEMA and the Red Cross??? That’s BS.
SHAME ON MAUI GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, RED CROSS, FEMA…displacing already displaced people is pathetic & disgraceful behaviour & they know it.
Where’s all th millions $$ donated frm all th other countries when it first happened??
I agree!!!!!!!!!
Keep the news on Maui open don’t let all this Ukraine and Israel take it’s place
If we have billions to send to Ukraine, we should be able to build every single one of these houses back, along with furnishings and necessities. Come on.
Why would they? They didn’t do it for people who survived other disasters over the last century.. They certainly won’t start doing it now.
Sorry our government too busy taking care of other countries 😢
This just so sad and it broke my heart 😢 God Bless all of the families
Green, Pelletier, Bissen should resign
I see a lot of families with no fathers….hence another problem
Shame on these tourists!!! Go help people not vaca!
Do they have insurance? How does their country expect them to survive? My heart goes out to them.
Home insurance is a scam there is always a loophole maybe there is one that won’t cover for their loss
My insurance agent who likes to brag says 50% did not. Anyone who had a fully paid property most likely could not afford it.
Likely most of the people will not be able to rely on insurance because the cost to rebuild will be astronomical. With all of the regulations and permits, fees, inspections, etc., it's not possible. The government is controlling everything but failing to offer support!
@@jocelynmarin1609 The DOJ needs to sue the home insurance companies on American's behalf.
This is absurd. Why oh why do governments not listen to their people? Oh yeah that almighty dollar is more important than the lives of their constituents.
My heart goes out to all these suffering people.
I am a tourist who has a trip there planned coming up. I have gotten so many different answers "please come back and support us" to "we're not ready, stay away" and I dont know what to do.
This news story is making it clear what the correct answer is. I have non refundable travel arrangements and even got trip insurance which they ARE NOT HONORING but i will talk to my credit card company about cancellation of the payment and will try to go elsewhere. I can't afford to book something else and lose the original money.
I guess i could just not go and lose all of it? 😔 I dont know what to do.
That said my struggles are NOTHING compared to what anyone in Maui is experiencing so i cant complain.
You should still come to Maui, just try to avoid Lahaina. Hundreds of local businesses are struggling.
I met a women and her daughter who were from Lahaina, Maui yesterday and she said that no one should go there right now It's way to soon for the people who lost everything.. She lost her business and her home. She still has her land where her house was but I guess she needed to get away and sort out what she's going to do next.. My prayers are with all the people affected by the fire. She did tell me that there was no conspiracy on how the fire started. It was a natural disaster caused by the winds and power lines that caused the fire.. So sad... 😢
Liar.
true, the fires weren't started by lasers from space etc. The winds were so strong Lahana never had a chance. Too many conspiracies. If sirens were sounded and the people were evacuated many lives would have been saved but the fire itself wasn't extinguishable even if they had hundreds more firefighters. HECO doesn't deserve all the blame from not diglently trimming the trees because some of the power lines fell on grass and the mini fire fanned by the gale winds ignited nearby bush.
NOT TRUE ! Cars were melted yet trees still had green on them ! Some houses made it when they definitely should’ve! Roads were blocked so you could t get out !!!! Come on ! OPEN YOUR EYES !! NO ONE thinks or believes it was a natural disaster but you two - NO ONE ! Because it WASNT!
The children conspiracy was the worst though.
I'm happy someone from Lahaina said this because people are so unrealistic expecting the government officials to be everywhere at once. They criticize the failing infrastructure but are unwilling to raise taxes to upgrade it. There was not much they could do because of how fast the fire moved through that area. Sirens still would not have saved many of the people who died. It' s not like it's a hurricane or a tornado and you can find absolute shelter. It's a fire! Fire burns nearly every type of material there is. Many of the people who tried to flee were burned alive in their cars! I just wish people would be a part of the solution instead of constantly pointing fingers at the gov officials. If they are so affected by this, perhaps they should run for office, be on the front lines, and be the first in line for blame when the next inevitable natural disaster occurs. It's so sad that this happened but at this point, people need to do something to help clean up and rebuild or shut up about. Geez.
Oprah could easily gift these families an acre each and still have over a thousand acres left. That is, if she's really concerned about the people. I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated.
Tourist dollars would help the rebuilding effort but I would not want to visit where I am not wanted.
Oprah could literally afford to build all of these people houses and not miss a cent...
Please stand for Maui !! Investigate this murder !!
Not a penny to any other coutry untill we can take care of the people at home. Send money to Maui
Where's Obama? He was raised by his grandparents in Hawaii.
This makes me so sad. Please dont give up
Need to keep this story alive. Where is the help to these citizens
Can someone tell me what’s going on with the story of missing children in Maui?
Why did the cops block roadways?
What would the State do if it were people from Ucraine?
No one goes into Lahaina…they aren’t even letting residents go into Lahaina. Charles is an angry man. Everyone gave from their hearts to these people, who did lose so much. The trouble is that was an in the moment thing. They were given shelter by the kindness of so many. That was always going to be a temporary thing. The people of west Maui, who didn’t lose their homes in the fire, are now expected to forfeit their lives just because the people of Lahaina did? Why is that fair? I’m up here and the locals up here are afraid to say what they do acknowledge: they want to open. They want to work. They have family too, that they need to feed, to support. This is a really unkind thing that ABC News is promulgating. They are making things much worse.
Active tourism is the answer. Less people same money ❤
That's a very valid point and a difficult one to say!! I believe the onus is on the government though, both locally and the administration for not getting their community back to them faster! All the money the state has earned from tourism through taxes alone should've been routed to rebuild this place for these people. I'm so very sorry everyone has been effected by this!!!
if only the tourists could go there to help in some way :{ the world needs to help
I 1000% agree with you! I couldn't just go there and not do something to help. My concious wouldn't allow it. Perhaps people might try to start a "Helping and Healing" tourism idea for those who would still like to travel there. This would give the "tourist's" thier trip to Maui while giving the sense of what is truly going on and helping them with talented tourist's helping west Maui rebuild? This hands on experience would not only be beneficial to the resident's but give the tourist a furst hand experience to what the people of west Maui are really experiencing. Continued media coverage, that only gives them six minute's of what's truly happenning to the citizens of Lahaina, west Maui, is great! I pray it continues! However, the family groups interviewed for this very informative segment are a drop in the bucket of how many are now without a home or any long term shelter. Think about it this way! Anyone with a concious, how much would you enjoy your vacation knowing that those who are serving you are without a home? I hope those touring now to help the economy tip way above the standard percentage so they know they are truly appreciated!
They won't let people or companies help. The government wants to take control of this and mandate everything. It's a huge money grab.
4 kids= exactly why so many poor in Lahaina
Dear God. How much more can these people take. Prayers for the people of Hawaii
A 3-4 year old with a pacifier!!
Maui needs to sue Maui leadership !!!
The State of Hawaii is 100% to blame for the criminal Negligence that caused Lahaina to burn down, but the Governor & Mayor are not even offering these survivors a stable residence. Green & Bissen should be forced to step down, then charged. They are a disgrace.
Thank u for the update, these people are hurting so much! This is an important story! 💕💙💜🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amazing! How did these chickens survive? Its gonna take a long time to recover. Need to figure out how to rebuild? Tourism brings in $! 🙏🏽
Re-build and help the families. They go first ❤
They need to suspend air BNB
This is heart breaking ! To THINK "some" ppl had THEIR land protected makes me sick !
why dont they put up tents in their own communities where their homes were and work together to rebuild? have cookouts, beer and enjoy the rebuilding of their homes! if someone has no insurance their neighbors could help with extra supplies.
Where are the CHILDREN?,? Too many questions unanswered questions
How did that chicken live?
"the hotels will go bankrupt" ... REALLY??? REALLYYYY??
Kid wearing Nasa stuff. If his Mother only knew. Maybe she does. May God be merciful.
