I grew up before social media. Because of social media...we have become impatient with reading...and just enjoying the process. I love RUclips...and watch a ton of it ...and yet I do reflect back to when there was nothing competing for my attention. I am looking forward to reading this book and your video here is great and so helpful. I just want to read and not feel the anxiety re: instant gratification. I just want to slow down and read this for what it is. I appreciate all that you shared❤

    I adored this book.
But one additional reason I loved it is because it was fascinating to imagine life in a different time / place.
It’s easy to forget about non western civilisations. And while yes this is a fantasy and lots of fantastical things occurred, there was a lot of trading routes and intermingling of ppls. Idk I say I should have been a sociology major 😂.
I love that the author truly did her research and even included a bibliography! I just came away with a deeper appreciation of the cultures that abut the Indian Ocean and sadness at what colonialism did in destroying it all

I loved this book. I gave Tress a three. I think this one was way more interesting because it gave insight into a different culture and it's legends. I was glad there was more than just the dinner that we see all the time.

I DNF this book at some point in chapter 8. I was bored and not having it. Maybe if at some point I have more patience and less ADD running through my head I can attempt it again. Although after your review I might want to wait for a time when I can handle a slog.

I gave this a three, I thought this was quite good, but I don't want to continue the series. I feel like with the narrator reveal stuff it can kinda stand on its own

I gave this a 2 I think. I was SO excited for this book, and I’m someone who enjoys slower books fine. But I thought this was so boring. Also, I’m sure I’ll be hated for this, but I thought the Dunya/Jamal thing (I read this months ago, excuse my 100% wrong spelling) was dumb. Just because she doesn’t fit what a stereotypical girl is, she’s a boy? There should be much more to it than that. I don’t like stereotypical girl things, but that doesn’t make me a boy. It just felt like a way to throw that in out of nowhere. But that’s just me. It felt so surface level, not deep.
But regardless of that, I was so bored with this book and so bummed because I thought I’d love it.
