Corbet's Couloir - the right and wrong way - Feb 13, 2020. Jackson Hole Ski Resort - Wyoming

- Remember ABC's Wide World of Sports intro? "The thrill of victory...the agony of defeat". This vid shows a little of both. Skiers attempting to navigate down one of the most difficult "in bounds" ski runs on the planet. Not for the faint of heart. Taken with a GoPro8 mounted on a ski helmet for the first person effect. There's some additional video footage before and after this if you look on my RUclips channel.

Best way to avoid the narrow entrance is to come in hot and do a double back flip right over it, then stick the landing in the wider area below.
And it's way easier.
Triple backflip for twice as much ease
@@michaelgrimes5588 I usually do a triple, but with a double twist and land switch, unless it's powder, then I go bigger.
Sam that applies to every situation in life.
Send it with maximum confidence. Best way into everything in life
one way or the other, you'll get down Corbet's Couloir
HAHAHA right
That's what I say about any run. Anyone, of any skill, can get down any run. Whether you do it safely... well, that's a different story.
Gravity is a bitch and she will always have the last word...
One way is on skis and the other way is on a ski patrol toboggan
What comes up must come down...
Crazy, I did almost the same thing exactly. I was adjusting and getting ready right about where he was when the back of my skis slipped out and I went backwards and started rolling. One ski came off like it was supposed to. One did not... my knee did over a 360 and snapped every tendon inside. 3 surgeries, countless hours of physical therapy and 5 years later I still can’t ski, or run, or do most physical things that involve my legs.. careful out there fellas
jeez bro i definitely shouldnt do it but i want the clout
@kshamwhizzle snowboarding is more dangerous on your knees because a ski will generally pop out and save you buy a snowboard binding aint going anywhere.
Tee
Yeah, when you hear about the consequences of these things the 30 second adrenalin rush seems hardly worth it. I'm all for having fun and achieving things but within reason.
@kshamwhizzle There are several times many more skiers than snowboarders, so you'd expect more skier injuries.
@@parate8628 that's not how it works, as having two connected points on a snowboard means much less possible torque on the knee. The only knee injuries I've seen snowboarding is from hitting trees and rocks.
Bet that first guy went to the lodge after and said "Man I just killed CC" hahhaahah
Bhahahahahahah.
Triple Diamonds!
This isn't skiing!
that guy got so lucky lol
Hey man, getting down safely is the first check off the list
You can’t just have a crowd watch your most humbling wipeout, you need to make sure it’s recorded and put on RUclips.
poor guy
Personally I feel like this is one of those cases where it’s safer to send this a little harder like the second guy. Especially with the snow that looks pretty icy
Yhe, the second guy did it basically how I would take this one on. Use the curve of the first corner to position yourself well and keep speed to not encounter shit like guy-3 did.
His body position was the most important part. He already had is right shoulder dropped and ski lifted up to make the turn as soon as he entered.
Yeah, I agree, hit the turn with speed and you will be up higher, enjoying a longer radius. The chute is essentially cone shaped so going slow means no space.
Just send it aye, i dont get why people cue up for this to just creep down it an inch at a time, stick to the piste man
@@joepace9716 yeah if you don't dare to send it you shouldn't ride it in the first place

You can’t second think yourself in Situations like this just send it and 90% of the time you pull it off . Fear messes with skill unfortunately
I feel like especially in alpine sports people overestimate themselves way too much. I wouldn't go down CC if I had the slightest doubt that I'm not prepared enough.
@@DaGhost141 i thought i was like that too.. until i got a concussion.. skiing just gets me too hyped lol.
not to mention slowly scraping down can actually screw your more then sending it too lol
i definitely agree with you lol last year it took me three tries to get my first black diamond. the first two attempts i was trying to play it safe and go down a little slower but fell both times at a certain turn. the third run i said fuck it and just flew through the turn and it all worked out lol
respect for u stopping the recording when u thought he was hurt
I needed to watch the next skier going down dodging the ski stuck in the snow
I've done Corbets, but would have skipped it on this day. Already packed and rutted. no thanks. Beginners don't respect snow conditions until they fall.
8 year old go on this
Doesn't look too fun.. definitely people just trying to check a box.
I've peered over the edge at Corbet's many a time but wouldn't think of doing it without many inches of pillowy powder in the LZ.
Very good points
Ya that snow looked like a bitch, lumpy ice.
If anything this is steeper than it looks. Second guy took the right line, just got caught up. Been at the top and considered it a few times. Never want to do it at the beginning of a trip and hurt myself before getting my fun in. At the end of the trip I'm tired and don't want to get a bad injury that puts me and my employees out of work. Kudos to anyone with the appropriate skill level and the stones to try it.
It amazes me that skiers just casually glide off cliffs
Me too! ,and im a skier
Not that many of them do. Usually it's the pros and those that live at the resorts full time.
I'm a good skier and Corbet couloir is the only ski run I ever refused to do. The entrance is way too dangerous, especially on hard snow/ice.
You have to conquer your fear
Just send it
Send it.
I did it once....my first time to Jackson hole 15 years ago. Snow was soft and I was 25 and it just looked doable. Since then I've been back maybe a dozen times and haven't been even close to tempted. I am 30 lbs heavier but the snow is almost always carved out in a way like in this video or worse.
Don't listen to these people telling you to send it. Listen to those instincts, they are what keep you alive.
I have skied Corbet's from every angle about a hundred times over the last decade in my mind on RUclips. Never had a scratch!
And in person the view from the top of Corbett’s is infinitely more terrifying than it is on camera.
Yep. It's almost steeper than it looks. I swear that the slope is concave from the top sometimes.
Mammoth has runs that make this look tame. I’m not sure what the deal is here? If it’s icy, pass, hit the stuff fresh.
@@jameshinton429 The deal is that it is about a 20 foot drop into the run. One you land that, it's no biggie. There is steeper stuff everywhere, even at Jackson. It's that dropoff with the possibility of the tram going by right as you drop.
Reminds me of Sisters Chute in Tahoe at Kirkwood. Difference is, you enter from the left, ride the half bowl face then towards the bottom of the chute, you get launched about 30' in the air, depending on your speed, then land on the fluffy face. Can't even feel the landing. Gotta hit it on a fresh pow pow day 🤘🤙
I lived in Teton Village for 2 years and skied every day. My roommate and I skied Corbetts no less than 30 times over those two years.
The line to take is along the rock ridge on the left. Don't sideslip into the run....you look goofy and it's a sure way to fail. Get to the wall and then it's a right and a left into the runout.
I did ask myself the whole time why noone did it. If there was sum powder it might be possible to dropin where thise people are slugging?
Idk but as a former slope patroller-rescuer, if someone is slugging that heavy or doesn‘t have the right confidence, I don‘t suggest to try it ^^
That couloir looks pretty wasted due to all these snails slugging in tho
@@inverovenevectum6857 the entrances on the left all require jumping in. I definitely prefer that way, but it does take serious commitment and competence.
The 2nd guy buried his downhill tip and it was sayonara for him...
@@Osnosis Full send it. Savest way in these things.
IF you can launch into the air and land. Lots of competent skiers can't catch air at all.

I did that injury to myself on my dirt bike. Was on crutches 9 weeks before they said I could start to put weight on it. It took another 2 weeks before I could leave the crutches behind. I feel for him.
I've heard Sending into Corbet's is the easiest way in, but I'm only up to like 15 ft drop ins currently 🤣Nice video thank you!
They repelled the skiers at the top and rappelled in to evacuate the injured skiers.
Rappelled in to rescue him. That should tell you everything......
I kept waiting for the "right" way
The guy who went straight into it did it the right way.
I love the idea of ski patrol ‘repelling’ people.. “go away! Shoo, shoo!”… rather than “rappelling” into the couloir 😂😂😂

I once was going out with a hottie who said she was life long skier. I wasn't and avoided double diamonds to avoid eating hard snow....Well, one day at Alpine Meadows she went flying off a DD and disappeared down the hill, like the expert she was. There I stood at the jump in....next. All these people around. Shit....Fuck....To make a long story short, I got a lot of ragging the next few days and we broke up soon after! Haha, cracks me up thinking about it. I basically side slid most of the way down, featuring a few tumbles as I forgot how to ski for a few crucial moments... @kshamwhizzle I absolutely agree. Some folks seem to have this attitude that you should be able to send everything no matter what the conditions. Just because you might be able to get away with it via strength and skill, it doesn't mean it's going to be, as you aptly put it; fun.

First time I went to JH it was through ski club while going to college back in the 2000's. There were 40 of us and we rented 2 coach buses and loaded them with 4 kegs each. We had a rolling party the entire way up ... 9 hours of mayhem. A low pressure storm moved in and it absolutely DUMPED the week we were there. The next morning (and first time I hit Corbet's) I was so hung over. Me and some of my buds took the lift up to Corbet's. At that time we were expert critics of all the TGR films and so to my surprise, Micah Black happened to be riding the lift up with us. It was cool as hell. We got the Corbet's and looked over the edge and prepared ourselves for the drop in... Everyone was watching.. my dudes, some babes, I was nervous as hell. I chugged a beer and approached the drop. I dropped in and ripped a back flip off the cornice. I absolutely exploded on impact, bounced, lost one of my ski's, landed upright, and through the grace of god stuck it and rode it out. It was glorious, I was alive, and best of yet I stuck it. (kind of). that night, everyone from ski club knew about it. Suddenly I was a hero. That night at the party I got laid. All the while 2 feet of snow fell that night. We shredded pow, drank beer, and got laid (tried to) the whole week, we were sultans, king of kings. When Im old and on my death bed Ill remember that week.

Damn... Epic fail. I really want to hit the place up but videos like this always shy me away. One day I'll tag along with my crazy skier buddies.
it does seem pretty advanced. .
@@spartan10010 I heard it's the steepest trail in America, in bounds anyway.
Find some less crazy experienced skier who explains what to do and what not to do. E.g. don't go into a steep slope if you don't know what to do there, or you'll end up sitting back which will make a very nasty and injury-prone type of fall.
Similar place in La Parva called Los Pumas in Chile! l had my first epic fail ! lots of years ago! 🤪
los pumas is not even close, los pumas is a piece of cake
My favorite quote in the video. "OH! OH! OH! DOUGH! DARNI DOUGH OH! shiiiiit."
Don't remember it ever being that crowded. I've skied it when at JH twice (once right after college - CU Buffs - after being part of the national championship ski team - though on dev squad). Back then in 91 it had a ledge you dropped down to by making a 90 degree turn then pop off that with another 90 degree turn in air to land in the chute. Then near the bottom of the chute were 2 rock walls with a narrow gap. The walls would fill with snow to create these snow ramps on either side of the gap. Was a lot of fun hitting the gap at speed. Then skied it on a trip there in early 00's but the rock walls were gone just an open chute. Much less dangerous to ski. Was there in 2020 but it was closed as it was the week before kings and queens and was white out conditions that day so couldn't see what it looked like below. I still think some of the back chutes at crested butte are tougher. Some have large drops. As does that big drop at blackcombe (Whistler). But for a time CC was pretty challenging.
Unfortunately most of these guys should only be observing. This looks to be only safe for full send, otherwise looks incredibly dangerous to be side-sliding down.
"D'oh, doardio d'oh! Sheit." My sentiments exactly.
1:10 the best narration I have ever heard lmaooo
The guy who broke his leg holds the unofficial record for number of descents through Corbet's in a day (16) since the east ridge chair was taken down. 16 tram laps in a day requires beating the tram down every time. Shit happens. Once it gets sideslipped enough times, this is the only reasonable way in.
Wow. Crap happens. Best wishes for a good surgeon and good recovery!
That's a wild feat. I guess if you hit Corbet's enough you have a higher chance of getting injured on it.
That's 64,000 vertical in a day while hammering down to not only beat the tram but get in the line and get on. Top to bottom over 4,000 vertical in under twelve minutes. That guy can flat out ski. Much praise.
well, he tried to beat the tram this time, but....
@@proverbalizer Ahahahahahhahaha. Yeah, didn't beat it.
Can someone explain what's so difficult or intense about this run? I'm sure that the camera/viewing a 2D video on a screen probably make it seem much milder than it is but is it just a very steep passage? Either way, based on all the videos I've seen I'm sure I'd be shitting myself standing above it. I'm sure it would humble me lol
This is with high snow conditions. You have to drop down (or sideslip) into it, and then do a sharp turn and stop yourself. The initial drop is what makes it legendary.
On top of that, when there's less snow, its a straight up snow cliff. You have to literally fall off to even get in.
In the late 70s and early 80’s it was a cliff edge drop of 12 to 18 feet......you hit the ground way too fast for good control speed...
its crazy like everybody lose something valuable in that trail
I was just up there and it was so windy and I’m 10 and I was at the top of the tram and I’m pretty lite and I got pushed around I just love the days when it’s clear tho
I skied it in febuary of 2021 and it was way smaller this year it looks so narly that year
seems like they rope it off if there's not enough powder to cover the rocks, i've only seen it open a few times, did this on a board in 1998 and there was 3 times that much snow it was quite a ride.
wtef w the pirate groans? lol
Priceless.

ya, I skied up to the edge and said... fuck that shit.... then one dude flew off the top of one of the side walls, had to be a hundred foot drop and skied it out like it was nothing.... damn locals... ;)
Don't worry I did the same. I would rather hurt my self esteem a bit than spend the rest of the trip at the hospital.
Depends on what your goal in skiing is. I don't need to go do death wish shit to have fun.
