How to drop into Corbet's Couloir when hard packed

- 2018-2019 Season everybody hanging out and no one dropping in. It was a hard landing on hard pack. Sorry about the language I was a little pumped!!! Just to clarify this I know some are upset saying I cut off the kids that were sliding down the side of the hill and I'm a bad person because of it. But the truth is if I was going to slide down the side of the hill I could have hung out all day long but standing there at the edge of a cliff ready to jump the longer you stand there the harder it is to go. The people with cliff experience understand. Like the ski instructor said the longer you stand there the more messes up your head.
you had all that time to make sure your go pro was properly secured...
Cant handle that hit 😂
He wasn’t worrying about that
Shut up he just did a 10 foot drop give him a break
@@gabrielpaster the guy wasn’t patronizing, just making a small joke.
@@gabrielpaster 1, it was a joke. 2, a 10 foot drop isn’t that big and therefore he doesn’t need a break.

Brutal
Doesn't mean take forever.

I know it can be annoying waiting for the noobs but it always makes me think back to when that was me. I can remember struggling and having people drop in next to me, seemingly getring anxous and just going for it. Still 30 some years later I can still remember all my lessons om the slope. I remember being 8 years old and the instructor losing me one morning. It was a pretty traumatic experience as a kid on the slopes, until I learned how to ski it all. Like the instructor said, call it. When your ready your ready.
nice
Trauma can be overcome...
To your point, the instructor knows that a student can learn a lot by the example set by somebody not hesitating and just dropping in. As if to say "see? just like that, just go."
@@MattS-pv6mk the see, they can do it method, only goes so far lol. It wasn't so much a matter of fear but of performance in front of others.
ahahhahaha losing me one morning i feel that
I mean good job, but, also loved the instructors attitude, “You’ve had your whole life to do it - these guys are just getting into it.” Calling back a kid who was practically hanging over the edge to give you a window is just a little impatient.
Yeah could have edited that part at least
Totally not every strangers responsibility to wait for a kid who’s been on the edge since they whipped up.
@@Pants13 exactly. it matters 0 how long i've had in my life to take the line. I'm not waiting for your kid to shimmy down for 10 minutes followed by all of his buddies taking just as long. Here's an alternative--tell your absolutely frightened kids to (a) go for it already; (b) wait for the better skier to go really quick; or (c) get back to the bunny slopes lol.
shut up and get back on the bunny slopes that kid was gonna take 5 minutes to get down just like the other kids, this dude took 15 seconds and was out, you have no idea what youre talking about
Nah man, that comment was bogus and screamed privilege. Not everyone was raised by parents who could take you skiing, or do anything fun for that matter. Dude was trying to jump the gun a little but if you have the skills to slide up and drop in as all those kids are descending the ladder, why should you have to wait.
All that anticipation for an absolutely atrocious drop in
It was brutal
@@alloftheaboveadventures3164 your nose is pretty
I prefer to build a small jump, have someone lift the rope, and approach with some speed so I can back flip into Corbet's. I'll send you a video of me doing it in my next life.
Wow, skiers are very polite, in over 30 years of surfing, I've never heard anyone ask if they could have the next wave LOL LOL
Well sometimes surfing you wait all day for a good wave so you need to take it and not wait and miss out. Skiing, the mountain and snow will be here for a very long time so theres no rush or need to cut
Surfers are also notoriously rude and unaccepting to people they dont know
@@matthewp1682 and surfers are assholes, it's ok to say it lol
Its a bit different. You can turn to avoid people on a wave. If someone literally dropped below him he would have just landed on them.
That's because you are surfing with all the good surfers. If you take a bunch of noobs to Jaws, I think you won't have much problem asking to go first while everyone else is still gathering their courage.
That ski instructor was the best part about the video
I wish my parents were even half as encouraging as the annoyingly positive ski instructor!
Without that instructor, those kids were just going to stare at it all day.
Annoying, nah. You need this kind of coach pumping you up!
spoiler... he waits for 6 minutes then when he drops the camera gets knocked out of position and you cant see shit
Thank you sir for entering the right way. Descending the ladder into Corbet's seems kind of pointless.
There is no right or wrong way.
You are in control of your own future.
Exactly if you’re crawling in your wasting my time,go practice some more first.😒
They only do so they can say they skied Corbet's. It's all about ego and bragging. They shouldn't hit it if they're just going to take everyone else's time crawling down a face.
Yh I don’t understand what’s the point if you don’t even do the hard part.
@jophus Xakc agree. They aren't actually skiing Corbets. It's like someone side slipping black diamonds so they can say they did it
funny how an adult is more childish than those kids in the video smh
full send my dude! some scary stuff but you crushed it
6 minutes waiting for a controlled fall. Good post.. keep them coming.
Folks that went down before this guy would tell stories at the lodge of how they slayed CC.😂
So true I bet they got the patch and everything
Ah yes the GoPro effect takes action again can’t wait to see it in person a year from now
I'm definitely going back
Former friends were at MSU in Bozeman, in late 70s, and close to Dougie Coombs.
They told of a day with huge fresh powder, and watched as Dougie lept in, and disappeared (with snorkel!) under about 7ft of new... they described it like watching a mole tunneling underground.
now do it again, cause the camera flipped down haha, must have been a hard hit
It was a hard hit the next time I go off it's going to be a powder day
So Corbets has turned into Everest, with line-ups and all the magic gone.
everything turns to shit
I have been there on weekdays and its empty. It's all timing. To be honest social media has ruined most special places. Everyone knows everything, When I was 17 back in 1977, I climbed the Grand Teton and getting a permit was nothing. Now everyone and their mother wants to climb everything. You now have to go off times and to more remote locations if you are looking for something special. Its out there if you are willing to do the work.
@@scottgibson9202 I don’t know this mountain/ mount but the name means big nipple in French , is it a coincidence ? 😄
@@scottgibson9202 you pay for permits to hike a mountain?
@@robert9595 I am not sure on the cost or if there is any cost. I needed to get a permit to climb the Grand Teton. I think it was because there is limited space high up on the mountain to camp. I don't remember if there was a fee. They make you pull a permit to hike the PCT and other trails out west. I think mainly because everything is getting overrun with people.
I already saw this, here in Crested Butte we offer short ropes to get into double diamonds when needed. Sometimes!
i really just watched a man stare down a mountain for 6 minutes
Bro pulled up to the huge crowd last, watched 2 kids drop in, and started talking about give me the window.
If everybody was dropping in at his pace, there wouldn't be a line. This guy has way better energy than anybody else there
@@CoNFiiDeNTiiAL I respect his skill, but buddy almost dropped in on 3 kids heads.
Even the instructor told him to step back cause he had half his skis hanging over the edge while a child was in the couloir.

So what exactly happened after you landed here? It looks from the video (6:26) as if your left ski is facing almost 180 degrees in the opposite direction right after you land....How is that possible? How did you not screw up your knee?
He jumped too far and looks like got caught in some loose snow, getting stopped in place. I tried and I have enough mobility to turn my leg and feet to similiar position, but considering the forces on landing and with skis put on, I guess he was just lucky
He crashed, basically hip checks, then gets back up. I really don't understand why you would drop directly into the flattest part of the goat path. This video is strange.
Yeah tbh that laugh he did after sounds like a fake cope laugh to save face in front of the ski group he snaked
You were so eager to drop in I thought you were professional till I seen you fall flat 10 feet🤣
Haha that’s what I was thinking. “I’ll show you how I can fall into this drop”
Has everyone forgotten that this is LEISURE activity? These skiers are marginally terrified. Be safe and have FUN at your pace! ✌️
Being scared is half the fun
If you want to progress you need to go out of your comfort zone =) It's also an adrenalin rush
The drive home isn't safe either.

Months later, this is still the saddest statement of failure I have ever seen
Sick video of you waiting in line for 6 mins. Can we see six flags line next 🤣
So is it like jumping off a cliff onto flat from that drop in? Or is it slopes down so that it’s not too painful jumping off?
It wasn't completely flat butt where I landed was not as vertical as I would have liked

I am not a skier, but if I was, there were two skiers that went before, right? So these people were standing there waiting for... In my mind, I'm thinking JUMP ALREADY! Anyone!!! Someone? Just one? What???!!! Again, I am NOT a skier, but IF I was, IT looked so fun and exciting, and WTHeck Who wouldn't want to be the first to experience THAT???!!! Maybe I'm selfish to be the first, but I would step back and give someone else a chance to experience a chance-in-a-lifetime!!! I'll give the count of 5, 4, 3, 2, too late...I'm off. And these poles are for what?? Ohhh SO exciting!!!!
"I don't know, I don't want to kill myself"....wise words to live by, lol
So he rocks up after everyone else and insists on jumping the queue? No kudos for that. Happy to credit him with giving it a go but shame he didn't fall flat on his face. Good that he had the presence of mind to check his GoPro.
Dude literally got stuck in snow for 5 seconds after jumping
How was the landing? I've heard it's flat but wide enough to be forgiving
You are right it was flat and packed. I landed across the hill and on rebound got skies pointed down hill before edges caught.
The fact that his camera nearly did a full 180 into his helmet speaks to how that landing was lol. Man's a beast for skiing out of that with an unharmed knee, chin, and tongue. I've taken a knee to the chin on an 8 foot drop with a flat landing, let alone a 15-20 foot drop like this. Doubt I'd be able to simply manage not to fall on my ass or my face in a million years lol
@@brazilianambassadordale8223 wait, this isnt more then 20feet?

Give me a recently groomed calm gradient of say 25 degrees with gentle meandering moguls, and I'll ski all night till my legs turn to jello. A tinge of madness is required of any person prepared to joust with gravity down this vertical wall, yet I couldn't stop the video clip once I hit the play button. My hat is off to the brave guys, gals, and kids shown lined up above the abyss. There, but for the fear of ignominious calamity, goeth I.
Good on ya!!!
Thanks!!
In reality it looks a lot, a lot more steeper
He’s the camera man- he is invincible
Congrats duuuuuuude
Well done !!!
also people have speculated about what is the steepest angle possible to ski....at how many degrees is it still a) possible for the slope to hold snow, and b) possible to hold an edge.... I guess if you huck a 100 ft cliff that's kinda like skiing a 90 degree slope, lol, or if you straight-line some insanely steep chute, then holding an edge isn't really an issue, but the fact that people can actually hold an edge on that side-wall is really amazing It looks to be waaay beyond 60 degrees and closer to 80 degrees...it exceeds the steepness where I would've thought it's impossible to control speed, but I guess that fact that's it's got some ruts, actually gives the ski's a little bit more to bite into...
Pierre tardivel I think said 70 degrees is possible. He has over 100 first descents. A magnetic protractor would measure the angle. I am guessing 50-55...but I've been wrong before!
@@stevewilcox6304 na, that top little bit seems way beyond 55 degrees. Phillippes at Mammoth is about 50 degrees and yeah it's steep but you can link turns in there pretty easily if you're good and side slipping it would be nothing at all like side slipping this. Some long lines down Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands average about 43-48 and again they are nothing at all similar to the top section here.
70 sounds about right for the limit of a skiable descent though
@@proverbalizer You might be right. Anselme baud said 57 degrees was at the limit of what was conventionally possible, when describing the nant blanc. 70 degrees is sort of technically possible. More than that your better off straight lining till you find shallower terrain. I think the des Lauriers bros,' ski the whole mountain' explains how to drop a cornice very well. But it's still so easy to stack it!
My favorite part was watching the groms drop in
Over-proofed the dough, my guy.

Looks like some super short skis. Get the chesty helmet mounts are for dorks
And that's what you call jumping right in.
This must be rated like 7 diamonds!
I see this insane videos and sometimes I’m thinking, is this not too much? Dragging kids in this kind of areas, where they can seriously injured? I’m on skis my whole life (Germany), but I would never try a slope like that. When you can do it and you your limits fine.
You think these kids were dragged here?

@6:15 he finally did it.
A lot of people talking about the attitude or politeness of waiting vs not waiting for the kids in the lesson. Just my 2 cents as an instructor: there is no reason to take a group at that skill level down that run in the first place. By letting your kids scrape and climb their way down a run that far above their level, they arent learning any real skills. Its mainly just the instructor boosting his own ego showing himself how hard of a run he can guide his group down.
It might help the kids' confidence a little bit, but their parents' money would be much better spent learning to be smoother and faster on single black diamonds with moguls and some short steep sections. At the same time, if one of them falls there, on that ice, they're sliding for a very long time.
He should know that mountain like the back of his hand as well and be able to take them to runs that strike a much better balance between challenge and comfort.
It might feel like a milestone to just barely pick your way down some world famous run, but much, much, more can honestly be said for learning to be smooth and tearing it up down the chairlift line.
I could hear my knees buckling.

Dude says “you’ve had your whole life to do it, these kids are just getting started” idk why but that kinda pissed me off. it's crazy to me that they actually take a bunch of little kids up there. Imagine being the instructor (or the parents)....that's even scarier that sending it off the cornice...cause you can tell the kids how to ski it, but you can't necessarily save them if they f it up....putting your own limbs and ligaments at risks is one thing, putting the limbs and ligaments of a dozen pre-teens at risk is another
it's not the instructor's fault; blame it on the parents
