Outstanding speed & energy... that's the beauty of being young! You can improve by changing the pattern to make your moves unpredictable & by moving your body off-center to make yourself a moving target. Do not stay too long in one place. We are now blessed with slow motion replay & we can check our weaknesses. A fast downward/upward center strike from a long sword or a katana can easily penetrate traditional double-sword defenses. You prepare for that, because that's our fave.strike as oldies.
An old master taught me when I was young how to penetrate the Redonda & Sinwali techniques. He said that the moment the opponent crosses his arms, strike vertically down & up, strong & fast.. Watch your video in slow motion & see how open you are several times as you do the drills. I still cross my arms, but when I do, I time it such that I'm in a retreating mode or if not, I'm attacking at great speed without doing a redundant pattern. That's why, I say, change the pattern.to lessen the risk.
Thanks for the tip. Now to close the distance on that window of opportunity. I say the best attack is to stab them with a preferably a longer sword or better yet a spear
Your center strike would be met by diagonal side step inside and cutting your hand off so if that is your favorite strike you are in for a world of hurt. Your legs are also fair game, anything that sticks out farthest gets cut first. He's practicing a pattern, they don't fight by constantly swinging the swords around mindlessly so you can easily beat him by putting something down the middle. They also have straight thrusts with either or both arm so watch out.
this is just a kata, most of this doesn't translate to a real fight. The reason for doing this is different than actually addressing an actual scenario, watch is sparring videos
Now, after you have seen your video in slow-motion, what do you think will happen when I focus all my vertical center strikes on you while you make a lot of side strikes w/ crossed arms? An octogenarian grandmaster told me last year that after 20 teachers & 50 years of experience he has only 1 favorite strike left, the vertical downward/upward center strike. The art of Tapado uses a similar technique w/ super-strong strikes. I use that too w/ my 44-in. sword & 6-ft.Garrote Y Lanza (stick/spear).
