  • Lex Luger on Jumping from WWE to WCW
2 time World Champion "The Total Package" Lex Luger discusses why he jumped from WWE to WCW infamously appearing on the first episode of Nitro without WWE's prior knowledge which Luger alleges led to the company withholding pay he was owed at the time. "Lex Luger was called “The Total Package” because he was a big, handsome guy with the best body in the business. In 1987, we brought him into the Four Horsemen as an “associate.” He was an intelligent guy who ate well and trained hard. Because of his background as a pro football player, he had an agent and understood contracts more than anyone else in the dressing room. When he started with Crockett, Luger was smart enough to have a lawyer look over everything-an idea that was absolutely novel to the rest of us. He received an outlandish money deal that made some wrestlers jealous; his educated point of view was refreshing, but challenging. We called him a locker-room lawyer. If we drew a $200,000 house, he would calculate the percentage due the boys. He’d point out things that were missing in the industry, asking questions like, “Why don’t we have health insurance?” Lex brought an awareness to the average wrestler that hadn’t existed before. I thought that he also added a lot to the Horsemen. When Luger turned good and challenged me for the championship, as green as he was, I never felt like I was putting my body on the line. If he lifted me over his head and press-slammed me, he was always careful." - Ric Flair

He brought in agents to do his talking and negotiation because he saw holes in the system and wrestlers getting screwed and he pissed Vince McMahon off by doing so. Lex Luger showing up on Nitro Live while also appearing on Raw the same night which was taped was a huge moment in the Monday Night Ratings Wars between WCW & WWE. And whether he believes it or not this is exactly why Luger ain't in the Hall of Fame & may never be...same with Rick Rude. Have no idea why Vader ain't in the HOF when he pretty much begged to get in just before his death. FUCK the WWE for not giving a dying man his wish when Vader obviously deserves to be in the HOF.

Vince let's guys in that left awfully and then died. Savage came to mind. It's all about who Vince likes. But he has added some guys who I thought were overlooked. There is always a chance. I may have commented this on here before or somewhere else but my theory: Lex was getting buried af after the Lex Express and Summer Slam 94 (another theory of mine is that Bret Hart was behind this - he saw Luger as major threat n a younger Hogan) and they had him tagging with Davey in 95’; I think Adam Bomb did a shoot where he depicts “ribs” Owen would pull on Luger and imo they weren’t good natured ribs - it was career sabotage and just making Lex look like dog 💩. All of the aforementioned is why he jumped ship to WCW for such a low amount - he was desperate.

Lex is simply a class act and if you're not going to induct a class act then i guess you might as well induct Hogan again or something.

He was going nowhere in wwe, maybe a future heel turn would have Made his career better. Not giving notice hurt him with vince , but if he doesn't give notice wcw wouldn't have hired him. Tough spot.

I am sure Lex Luger subconsciously knew WWF was a not a good fit for him that's why he was willing to take a drastic pay cut and leave money on the table.
