The vocal callouts are what have my attention. I marched through high school, and would have marched in uni if I went through with it. That there is the difference between a band that’s “good for their age” and one that’s genuinely amazing. The coordination and confidence is unmatched. So many kids are afraid to vocalize on the field when they start out. Hearing all the little time keepers like the step, kick, kneel or even a simple audible countdown is so refreshing. It keeps not only the caller in time, but the whole group on the same page. Like the call of whistle at the very start, calling the whole band to attention and starting the pace at the same time… it’s such a little detail that needs more appreciation. Also damn those turns are sharp. Every one is so clean and snappy and just brilliantly executed.
It comes from being in band for so long, lots of singing to get in tune, lot of singing to vocalize the music and commit it to memory. Haven't in a while personally, but I miss it.
There were several people out of step. The fact that it was hidden so well is a testament to how good they are. It also has to deal with numbers. The more people that there are, the less obvious it is.
I don't think that's the most impressive part, if everyone starts on the same step and stays on time with the beat everyone will stay in step. In my opinion I think playing the instruments while making coordinated movements is the most impressive thing; there's a lot of things to think about, nothing much to think about to stay in step.
Notice how steady the cam is the whole time, a true glide step. Memories just kept flooding in. I remember being on the field doing the halftime show (not for ohio, lol), the music, the crowd. All those hours of practice to make the show perfect. The pride felt when the show is done. The roar of the crowd afterwards. The emotion, thrill, sense of accomplishment, all there. I was truly honored to be able to experience the moment. Thank-you for bring back those memories. Doubt anyone will see this, just felt it was needed to be said.

Not unbelievable at all. You’ve successfully inspired a new generation of musicians in the making, and made a good many more of us old hands mighty jealous!
@@Aygeu That’s simply what it’s like to march like one of the top university Marching Bands in the entire country. Ohio State is ridiculously good in that department and are well respected for most/all things music.
Thank you all for 500,000 views! I never imagined that this video would be so popular, and I am very grateful that I am able to continue to live out this dream. I will be posting more content throughout the summer as our annual summer sessions get more and more challenging. Go Bucks!
The video is well worth 500,000 views and even more. It's simply awesome to see things up this close and in this perspective. I was born in Ohio and lived there up until 2009 and moved to Indiana but I will always be a Buckeye. I've been an Ohio State fan for ever and always will be. If you see this comment I do have a question with something I noticed in the video. The conductor seemed to be pointing in your direction and once he did, you'd start drumming, starting things off. How does he know where you're at in the formation? Do you have something different about your appearance that he can pick up on? Or is it just practice and you end up in the same spot in the formation and the conductor knows where you'll be? Thanks in advance.
@@Lugare2011 He knows who me and the other squad leader are, and he knows where we are on the field most of the time. We are usually in the same spot for that entire week, so he knows exactly where to point. We are usually watching him at all times as well.
I hope you know how amazing it’s going to be years from now to look back and remember this. This put tears in my eyes. My dad was in this marching band and dotted the “i” twice. In 1962 because they didn’t have a senior to do it. And then again in 1963, as a senior.
Edgy Artist that’s exactly what I used to think, but when I joined (not Ohio) you really get a look into the bands personality. For example, I watched one of our quints play the entire 3 minute fight song upside down while somebody held him up XD
I’m always amazed at the precision of TBDBITL, but the tiny movements are unbelievable…. The turn of the head, the position of the hand, the step-snap. 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 I just got a new TBDBITL license plate. So proud!
As a non-American (a fellow Canadian as a matter of fact)... That... was truly an experence! Edit: The whole idea of college sports in America (specifically Football and the marching bands) is without a doubt one of my favorite things about American culture! Going to a college football game is something I have to experience before I die!
as someone who just started playing HS concert band this is absolutely amazing. the skill and practice it takes to be able to play correctly, with good tone, while also marching like this, is absolutely amazing.

This brought back many memories of marching in my college band in the late 70's. I played bass trombone and it was great to march along on the field with this great band. Thanks for taking us on a trip down memory lane! Glad you guys only had to do a glide step and not a high step. Every eight steps I saw everyone's instep hitting the yardline and in step - that is impressive!
I'm a senior in high school (trumpet) and this is sooooo cool! I want to say thanks for all the help during summer clinics and sessions etc. Even though I didn't ever meet you, I still recognized you and your name. I know you have definitely made an impact on a percussionist the way Katie Brink impacted me. Can't wait to be accepted so I can do this. It is a perspective very few have seen. Amazing video!
Now I’m a huge drum corps fan, absolutely love that style of the marching arts. But TBDBITL was my first love on the football field, and always will be. As a drummer this is such an amazing perspective. Love those new Mapex’s btw, the chromed out is totally classic OSU, I love it!
Ryan, I just found your videos, and god DAMN, man, this sent chills up my spine. I never made it into Ohio State's band, but my high school band experience was as great as it was because of the OSUMB. My high school band director went to OSU and made it into the band. He played tuba, and if I remember correctly, he dotted the 'i' as a 5th-year senior. Huge deal for a black man in the 1970s! Everything we did, from Three Camps and Cadence One for pregame to "Whistle!" to "Halt, Kick, Down, Rest! Don't you move!" was straight up OSUMB. We just did our arm swings on 1 and 5, not 2 and...uh...6? Thanks for letting me relive one of the best times of my life...and live out a dream I'd always had. You rock, man.
Ominae Toafe actually I am a drummer, and we work on how we walk steadily with the drums all the time. I can tell you he/she has certainly never been a waiter or waitress.
