Are Your Tires Rotting? Dangerous Dry Rot And How To Avoid It Explained

  • Let's take a look at a common safety issue with one of the most important components of your vehicle - Tire Dry Rot.
Rubber breaks down over time and your tires are always exposed to harsh elements like atmosphere, sun damage, etc. Your tires are always fluctuating between extreme temperatures - this heating and cooling causing the rubber to get hard and crack.
Tires should be replaced once visible dry rot becomes apparent.
Tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires at 6 year intervals even if substantial tread depth remains.

The thing is if you consult any professional technician 99.99% they will tell you to replace it anyways so there is no point on asking them.

I been using Used tires for years, so let me tell you there is two dangerous tire defects 1st. Severe dry rot in the sidewall is dangerous your tire can blow out at high speeds can be dangerous. 2nd. Lumps or Bumps or sidewall Can blow out as well. If you have dry rot on Tire Thread your tire is just going to peel like a banana rarely will it blow out unless you keep driving on Wires.

Had some BFG Long Trail TA's that dry rotted, cracks between the tread all the way around on all 4 tires. Now they were over 7 YO and out in the weather, but still with a lot of tread left (almost all of it). Also have some Michelin LTX M&S that are starting to dry rot, they are also 7 YO now and need to be replaced, also with a lot of tread left (Garage kept). Nothing lasts forever that's for sure.

My tires have a little bit of cracking. But I’ll be replacing them next year because they are 6 years old plus the tread is getting really low. So right now, I’ll continue to use my tires till the winter because I’ll be switching to my snows in 3 months.

Planned obsolescence, modern tires are designed to dry rot after 5 years. I bought new car in 2013 garaged since day 1 has currently 30k miles and tires are dry rot and treads are bald and there rated for 60k tread life. Ive see tires from the 1960-80 in junkyards with no dry rot!

Great video, thank you! I bought a used car with winter tires. I have skoda fabia 2005 combi. My front tires are still fresh and soft with good grip on it, about 3 years old. But i just missed to pay attention to my back tires. I was shocked and very gratefull that im still alive. They was 19 years old
Yeap, no Kiding, DOT 1102. I immediatley bought two new winter tires. I used to buy used tires before, but with time and all the information i see how important is to have new and fresh tire. Its just something that you should not neglect.

That was a real good video, the 63 people who think other wise do not know anything about this subject, dry rot is more prolific in the south than in the north as I've never seen it at all in the north, just had a bike, motorcycle that the tires had to be replace because of dry rot, the bike was in a dealer ship and sold that way. They told me it passed inspection and I told them they did not know how to inspect bikes, I'm in south TX and finding out that some bike dealer ships think they can get away with a lot and just plan screw the public if you are new or just have not ridden a bike in a long time but telling you the bike is sold as is, won't be going to them ever again. I hate dealer ships, even for buying a car, I'd rather buy a bike from a private person, yes I know I'm off the main subject, sorry.

My tires on my nissan were 12 yes old ... looked new, plenty of tread but were hard as a rock ... NO DRY ROT because the car is garage kept and only driven once per week, so i would be driving down the road in the rain about 60 mph and either my front end or rear end would go sideways because of lack of traction because the tires were hard and not soft to grip the road ..

Same thing here! Mine 9 years old. I just bought it 2 weeks ago.Just today i was gonna move my bike into the garage, i turned on to the street and could barely make the turn without going into other lane. I thought i was driving shitt, as i rode around to the garage o could hear the tires roaring, could see front tire being wavy. I i could barely control the bike. Checked the tires with 2 gauges they didnt register anything. Dad lopked at them and said they aint flat,,, i said its hard to tell by looking. It has tubes. If i had went onto an interstate it could have been bad. So you cant tell by looking at or kicking them. They have a little dry rot. They seem hard. They sàt for 8 years. The bike onlh has 7100 mi on it when i got it. Great video!

The split all the way around is what you should be concerned with. Minor fine short non-connecting cracks....remember MINOR...(not like the ones in the video)..doesn't really indicate a problem that needs to be addressed right away but should be watched. Beware of the tire/inspection shops that try to scare you as they do in my state. Also look inside the tread, I just returned all 4 of the middle grade overseas (China) tires at Sears for splitting all the way around. They were only 3 years old with 10,000 miles on then. These type of manufacture defects should be immediately reported, investigated and recalled. Personally I want nothing to do with any overseas non-name branded manufactured tires or safety items.

The tires on my project Jeep were installed in 2006... yeah, they have more than a little dry rot! They still hold air fine and have probably 90% tread left but I definitely wouldn't go further than around the block on them.... I don't even trust them to drive to the tire shop on, I'll pull the wheels off and take them in my other rig to have new tires installed. I will however do a monster burnout on those old tires before they get replaced, only good use for bad tires! =D

I don't drive far and I don't drive every day, I buy used tires and you would be surprised if you don't drive much how fine a used tire can be as long as the tread is really close to matching your other tires. As long as they are not weather cracked or made into sort of a slick on a garage floor, you only drive 2,000 miles max for a full 12 months a year you would be surprised how long a decent used tire can last.

  • @amjathkhan2004

What's causing tire rotting? Is that because of low air? Thanks!

    • @sheridanmcpheeters8365
      @sheridanmcpheeters8365 4 года назад +5

No, the air pressure is not a directly contributing factor. "Dry rot" is degradation of the rubber, probably due to oxidation; oxidation is accelerated by exposure to sunlight (UV) and volatile/reactive chemicals, and also just the high temperatures experienced on tire surfaces due to friction and road surface temperatures. This probably isn't helpful a year later, but that's the mechanism. Oxidation is a problem because it changes the physical properties of the rubber, generally making it more brittle, so the oxidized rubber will crack more easily and also have worse traction.
The best way to protect your tires from dry rot is to park in covered areas to avoid the sun, or cover your car so that the tires don't see as much light. Oxidation is going to happen no matter what, though, over time. Vehicles that aren't driven often might need to have tires replaced due to dry rot rather than tread wear.

I just bought a 2009 model car and the tires installed are the original ones 2009 year. I'm guessing the previous owner replaced the steel wheels with alloy ones when he was riding it and put the old set back when he sold it. I checked it before buying and i check the tires every 3days, I'm that kind of guy lol. I was really planning on changing the tires as soon as I finish looking for some cool looking set of wheels and tires, but yesterday as i adjusted the rear suspension height, I saw my rear tires looking like shit! I cant believe it got worse that instantly! I rushed to the nearest auto shop to get them replaced. I didnt had the chance to get my wheels replaced :( No im stuck with a steel narrow rims for 4yrs... Safety over looks i guess!

You’re incorrect about used tires. Remanufactured tires are as good as the new ones

lol yeah my tires are 🤬ed then!!!! I have only cracks on top the tire between the tread!!! No side wall cracks, they are only 3yrs old still like new on my ram 2500 they’re the $2000 mud tires idk if there’s even a warranty for them still... think 16k miles are on them would be nice to trade these mud tires in for some less aggressive tire... yeah was young and dumb then seen them had to have them but now I think they’re to loud driving down the road and I don’t go mudding with the truck but they do look sweet 🤦‍♂️

Makes sense to change your tyres every 3 years and always buy a new manufacture date and tyre garages all way says yeh man you need new tyres no matter what they look like
