I started my new small business directly because of the plastic bag ban nearly 7 years ago in Western Australia. I've lost count now of the number of bags I've made. Some simple ones I now set aside to donate to community groups and charities. Making bags has saved my life.

I made myself a set of fabric grocery bags 15 years ago.
Pro Tip: if you do fabric handles instead of webbing like she shows, the handles last longer if you press them well after each wash. Crumpled straps wear out fast.

These have been the thing for a long time in oz. The goverment changed the law. Make sure to sew a box with an x in it to hold your handles secure. Sew it to the wider seam allowance inside to hide it? They are the first to go under the pressure, you may need a slightly longer bit on each side, and sew another row about 1/2" down to stabilise the top? Some handles are sewn down to the floor on all four ends. Another fabric is canvas or stronger curtain fabric, quilting cotton doesn't last forever with things that poke out, have you tried plasticating it?. We used to get plastic fabric (recent invention, not woven at all) for bags, they are breaking down now, about 15 years later. So the supermarkets are using hessian or canvas in some of the ones they sell, for strength. Cotton Gaberdine or drill (poly blend) are stronger too. And twill cotton tape around 1 1/2 or 2" wide, (thicker than cotton draw string tape) for handles with stuffing after sewing both sides together, or Before? Whatever works. The cold food bags, are better with a lid and zips, in our hot weather. Or you could put them under a car quilt? Woolies is adding thicker shoulder straps to them now as well, onto the ends. The bases get pretty dirty in the back of the car and on the floor at the bus stop, so a thicker dark base can be handy. The orphan block, with a lining makes a great flat pocket on the front, for papers? Can use a zip if you like. The "size" used in new fabric, keeps their shape better, so try not to wash them too often and starch when you do maybe? Another idea is an elastic loop on one end so you fold the base and handles up, roll from the other end and use the loop to keep them from opening up, all the time? Have fun.

How about instead of putting the strap inside the top seam, wrapping it around the bottom of the bag - so that the effect is the straps are lifting the bag from the bottom? Wouldn't that be sturdier?
Love box-bottoms, though. Love it when customers bring their own bags and they have box-bottoms. It makes bagging the groceries SO much easier! ;)

I live in South Australia where these plastic bags have been banned since 2009, most drink containers , cans bottles etc have a deposit/ refund scheme. Single use plastic are now almost phased out in the last year. Bags for produce also going, people just take little net bags.People got used to taking their own bags very quickly. Composting containers are now very common instead of plastic. So we’ll done for nudging people to make a change.

My great grandmother kept our family supplied with aprons, shopping bags, and big flowing nightgiwns. She never paid full price for her fabric. I still have one of her shopping bags that was made from upholstery fabric, made prior to 1972, as well as some aprons, full and half sizes. So you have given me some inspiration for some shopping bags. I also have some of my son-in-law's jeans that I want to make into some sturdy bags. Thanks for your video and inspiration!

Nothing more practical than a shopping tote! Now, in addition to fabric bags, I convert my bird seed bags into totes as well. Thrift store sheets (in good shape) are also great for linings as well as curtains or miscellaneous yard goods for the outer--and home dec weight all the more bonus.

I have never understood why everyone leaves the opening in the bottom of the lining to turn the bag. It doesn’t lay flat. I always leave it in the top. I know I am going to do a top stitch around the top which very neatly closes that hole. If I know it’s going to be used as a grocery bag I will do another top stitch close to the first one. I just personally think it makes my bags look more professional. Just my opinion.

Great video. I have made bags before but I appreciate your tips. We are still able to use plastic bags from the store here. I use them in the trash cans. Only. It insures that the trash gets taken out often. I can adapt if they ever ban the plastic bags. I do bring my own bags. My grandsons go to a camp each summer at Seaworld and they learn about the impact plastic bags and packaging have on the creatures that live in the ocean. Everything brought into Seaworld must be something that can be reused. They shamed me into using recyclable bags when shopping. I learned within 3 months that I need to have designated bags for produce and meat and they must be washed often. I need long handles on my bags. If it can’t be easily carried over my shoulder I don’t use it. Tote bags, purses, everything must be that way. I like canvas bags. Or at least canvas on the bottom. TFS.

Plastics are made from different grades of material. That is why not all plastics are recyclable. I also read that thin bags can get caught in recycle machines and shut down production while someone has to clear machine of blockage.

    • @AWanderingEye
      @AWanderingEye 8 месяцев назад +2

@@dyanstoutenburg9974 I think additionally the plastic bags are a litter hazard, while they do break down into particles eventually they can choke wildlife, too. The filmy plastics get sorted out and accepted here at WalMart and Target for recycling but who knows how much recycling happens (if there isn't a market for the material will it just go to the landfill)? So much better to use reusable materials that when they break down will genuinely breakdown (compostable) rather than just biodegrad. It is amazing the extent modern society utilizes the most precious commodities (i.e fossil fuel) for the most ludicrous objects (disposable anything). It's like we just didn't have on our thinking caps or imagined that there was a endless supply...Yes, I am being a bit sarcastic.

In oz we can't buy, sell, or use plastic bags, or incandescent light bulbs unless you still have a stock to use at home, they have a limited shelf life too. Replacing bulbs is terrible, you can have leds, which do not shed light very far at all, or flourescent, which emits uv rays, causing cancers, inside your house. They must have banned the heat producing original bulbs before they researched the alternatives, to find out which actually was worse. As an alt to plastic bags, the supermarkets make and sell non woven bags, which are designed to break down, so we have to replace them too. We are using non plastic cutlery for takeaway, it's bamboo, which is not pleasant in the mouth, and takes much longer to break down. Paper straws, to stop working while you drink. We are dealing with the no sugar fanatics, who put worse more destructive chemicals in drinks than sugar. The guy who demonstrated sugar on tv here, used coke a cola, not a drink with just sugar, for effect. How does sugar have the same effect as caffeine, that was a bad test. It's Nuts

I live in one of the first places in the US to ban single use plastic bags and that spread state wide. Now the store has to charge us for paper bags too. A little crazy. But the law outlaws single use plastic bags. As a result several stores switched to a thicker plastic bag that is harder to tear and is feasibly reusable to skirt the rules. They also allowed the plastic bags again during Covid so who knows what is happening anymore

In the U.K. I think we more of less reuse our plastic ones til they fall apart, but the shops still sometimes offer the thin plastic type. Most people bring their own now. I haven't used those thin plastic ones in years, and make my own out of whatever I have at hand.

Great project. We haven't had plastic shopping bags in Australia for years, over five years now. And we need bags even for clothes shopping, and if we get even a paper bag, it costs us monies!!! Love it. Thank you Di and Engineer.
When my daughter left home, her first Christmas, I bought her pretty bags (not a bag maker... but now😮) and filled with the expensive stuff from shopping... toilet paper, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, laundry etc. I just picked up extras when on sale for six months, and gave her $grocery gift card.... and some pretty spelling soy candles.

We also found out the hard way, thicker handles, with woven ecru braid, stuffed, are easier on your hands. Yours are good if you only take them check-out to shopping trolley/cart, and cart to car. Walking around with heavy bags needs a different style.
Quilting uses 1/4" because there is no strain on seams. Clothing uses a 1/2" seam to hold the weight, so you think adout it. Short straps with only one line of stitching, puts stress on one place only. Don't be surprised if they give out. You may be better off with a lid on your cold bag with a 3 sided zipper to open it. Line that orphan block for a paperwork pocket.totes are good with a zip up monet and small things pocket inside. Or a sunnies pocket, a loop or hook for keys?
