  • If free 3 yard quilt patterns are your jam, this video will show you how to make a 3 yard quilt and where to get the free pattern! Who doesn't love a FREE pattern and with only 3 yards of fabric in yor quilt! I bought the fabric on sale for $4.99 per yard, using 3 yards for the quilt then an extra half yard for the binding. This entire quilt top cost under $20 bucks! That's amazing!!!
~***~Sister Chicks Border/Binding formula: First I measure the length or the width in 3 places (both sides and center) on my quilt and take the average of those 3 numbers.
Add together the meaasurements of both sides and the top and bottom,
Divide this number by 42" or the WOF, round up to a whle number. That number will tell you the number of border/binding strips you will need. If you times that number by the width of your border or binding you will know how much yardage you need.

I am a fan of 3 yard quilts. I am a fairly new quilter, under 5 years. Each of my 10 grand children and lots of new babies got quilts from me in 2021. I committed to making 15 quilts last year for my great nieces and nephews. I targeted each to be 48 x 60. To me they looked small, but all the kids thought they were just right for watching TV, either laying on them on the floor or covering up on the couch. I made all of them 3 yard quilts and no two patterns were the same. They are my “go to” patterns for a quick quilt top. Love your show!

Love three yard quilts. Have several patterns from Fabric Cafe. If you want them larger just add another three yards. I believe Fabric Cafe suggests 6 yards for a twin (2 yards each of three fabrics), 9 for a double (3 yards each of three fabrics) and 12 for a queen/king (4 yards each of three fabrics).

Your fabric and quilt is absolutely adorable.🧜‍♀️🐠🐋🐙 I was finishing a quilt top last night, sewing the border on it when I got a call from my sister that my mom is in the hospital. I'm 3 states away from her so I couldn't jump in the car to go see her so I took a breather and just continued on while I waited for more information about her. Maybe I shouldn't have because I SEWED AN ENTIRE LONG END BORDER FACING THE WRONG WAY! Ugh!! 😭 Obviously my mind was not working in my favor last night. Lol We're still playing the waiting game and worrying, so your video cheered me up a bit. Thank you! 💗

I LOVE 3-yd quilts! I found Donna Roberts some time ago and purchased a few books. Then researching quilts online I found a multitude of free 3-yd quilt patterns. I’ve made several strictly following the pattern and found that some quilts feel a bit “off kilter” with the pattern so I often add an additional block at the end of each row to balance the pattern flow, pleasing my eye. It also makes the quilt larger so I’ve purchased 1.25-2.00 yards more. With the leftover material I have enough for a double binding and I use the remaining fabric to make a design element for the backing. Works out very well!

I've never made a three yard quilt, but it looks like fun. I have a two-year-old grandson who loves Paw Patrol, so this would be perfect for him. I always believe that you can add borders to enlarge them and even use smaller leftover pieces to make cornerstones to tie them together with the center design. I stumbled on this video, so thank you!

That little girl is going to love this beautiful quilt you made for her. She's a lucky little girl. I have a ton of scrap fabrics that I am trying to use up. Plus, I have many one yard cuts of 100% cotton quilt fabrics that my daughter sent to me for Christmas, Mother's Day, and my birthdays (until postage became so high that we both decided to stop exchanging gifts through the mail). Yes, I am very interested in three yard quilts. This should help me get my stash under control while making quilt tops for children. Wonderful idea. I think every veteran piece maker, or quilter, should have a stack of three yard quilts made, finished, washed, and ready to donate when they are needed.

Hello! I’m a fellow Emmett quilter and I thoroughly enjoy your videos! As for Three Yard Quilts, I love them for a quick gift quilt. They are the perfect child size. When I make them for me I usually buy extra yardage to add border width to make them more of an adult size lap quilt. Easy peasy. Maybe call that 3 1/2 yard quilt. 😉
    Happy quilting Di!

@@sisterchicksquilting So sorry that was not me making your wedding cake. I live in Texas and I am a beginner quilter, a breast cancer survivor, a mother of two grown still unmarried daughters, my 94 year old mother lives with us ( me and my engineer, who served 29 yrs in the Army). We are retired and my mom has dementia so we are grounded, fortunately my engineer gets to play golf 3 days a week. And i am a sewer so I decided to make my daughters each a quilt. ( I foolishly thought how hard can it be it is all straight sewing I can do that for sure. ). 😂😂😂😂 little did I know
but after a year staying home with COVID restrictions I started watching u tube channels with ladies making quilts. Well I humbly apologize for being so wrong. I have been ordering supplies by mail over the past year and I am ready to start my projects. 🙄😜. I will keep you posted. Hugs Donna

Such a cute quilt! I'm a new quilter and the group I belong to sewed 3 yard quilts at one of our meetings. I bought 1.5 yards of each fabric which allowed lots to make an extra row of blocks on the bottom because we like throw quilts that cover from feet to chin, if desired. We've been using it nearly every day all winter. Thanks so much for your video and the link to the free pattern. Love your metal chick, the chicken timer and the border on your design wall! And you count your "uhms". LOL! I'm sure I will visit your channel again!

I love the music you used in this video. And I love, love, love the quilt and the colors you chose. Di, you are my hero. I was already planning to make a blue and yellow quilt using this same star block but something was missing. I had no enthusiasm for it. But I love the pattern you used because the additional block makes a big improvement! Now I can make the quilt, which I have been putting off for several years looking for the right pattern! I don't generally make 3 yard quilts because they really are too small. If I had a child I was making it for, then yes, but for me and my grown friends and family, no.

The size is small, but good for a lap quilt or child's quilt.
