As for the claims made by both comments, well Amy herself was actually the least aggressive when it came to licking the Tootsie Pop in the first test when compared to the other test subjects, both of which where male. Specifically the Third test subject was consistently proven to be the least efficient licker out of all the others in both tests, even though he was the most aggressive in the first test. So I would have to surmise that the claim is simply wrong. As for how this mistake could have been made I surmise that the commenter mistook Amy for Mat's wife (the brain sometimes get confused with information) who in the second test was actually trying to get to the Tootsie Pop 's centre and thus had a more aggressive technique though it should be noted that the result she got was 132 licks, several licks more than the top five contenders and far more licks than Amy who got 98 licks in the second test out of a total nine participants. As for an explanation that does not require any sexual reference I would have to say it would either have to be Amy's tongue texture, body temperature or a difference in the composition of her saliva compared to the other participants. Although Mat did indeed test for lower pH such as acids he did neglect to check other factors such as higher pH levels which gets into basic solutions which do actually have effects when it comes to deluding elements. What's more neglecting that the purpose of saliva in the digestion process is to dilute glucose which is the more efficient form of fructose the very element he was testing.
Fun fact, I had 3 periods free in high school and decided to answer this question myself lol. It was 742 licks until I could taste tootsie. I remember writing down numbers and results on my arm to keep track and count haha. I think it was around 2000 licks as well that finally cut the tootsie pop perfectly in half, making it fall off the stick.
Put it in water and let it sit. You never licked it, but made it to the center. Or use a hammer for something like that. That second one counts more since that's closer to using your body to do it, which is closest to the original intent, and thus spirit of, the question.
Chemist here: Oxygen is more negative, Hydrogen is more positive. Oxygen has a higher electronegativity and attracts the electrons to it for a longer period of time, being shielded by them and therefore is more negatively charged. Hydrogen is the opposite. Oxygen is holding the electrons for longer exposing the hydrogen's proton core, which is positively charged. Other than the minor chemistry niggle this was an awesome video, did you consider using a basic solution (pH greater than 8). That could possibly go faster than a neutral pH as glucose can react with bases. Milk of Magnesia (MgOH) or cleaning ammonia would get somewhat close to the opposite of the citrus juice (pH of 10 and 11 respectivly) and is common in households. Now I feel the urge to test basic pH on dissolving a tootsie pop, and other food chemistry experiments. To the grocery store! Thank you MatPat for the great content and keep it coming.
One time, me and my great-grandfather tried finding out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop waaaaaay before Food Theory was a thing.
I clicked this completely on a whim and then stopped and was like “wtf is that MatPat?” And I cant describe the level of surprise when I read the name of this channel
That depends on your immune system because if you eat too much you’ll get sick. It also depends on the richness of the shrimp because shrimps are pretty rich.
Ok I'm 49 years old and seeing you do those vignettes from when I was a kid was fantastic. When I was in elementary school ( ages 5-11), I actually did a science fair project on this EXACT concept. How many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. With some 'help from adult sources', we used 3 examples, One was just a wetted sponge going back and forth over a Pop, using weights and pulleys to keep it in motion with little kinetic loss, one was an adult start licking it, and one was a kid ( myself) lick one until we got to the center. I still have my results; Thank to Mom for never throwing stuff out and a wealth of attic memories. Sponge : 108 total passes til center Adult Tongue: 161 Total passes til center Kid Tongue :172 Total passes til center. This was in 1979 mind you so Your results may vary. Guess they were just slightly tougher back in my day.
Not bad at math, it was just continuing the joke of the whole video where Matt wasn't interested in anything Researcher 3 had to say, so he would have automatically failed even if he'd had the lowest number. You can tell they are really good friends just from that one joke.
It may have been continuing the joke, but they were all WAY under 200, which seems unlikely ... or not, since he said 117 when he finished. Also, again, go Amy!
My dad tried this when he was a little kid, at the end his tongue was bleeding, because the bubbles in it make it sharp, poor Mikes tongue- Edit: It took him 427 licks
Reminder to those who want to attempt this sort of thing: you don't have to do it in one go! You can do this over the span of a week or two, just take care to dry it thoroughly between sessions, like maybe with a cold airdrier.
So how I got MY "licks" number was: Buying several tootsie pops counting the licks PER SIDE, and writing the number down. There is ALWAYS a thinner side. and then averaging them. the thinner side was an average of 150 (rounded, because it's been half my life ago) the thicker side was an average of 300 (also rounded)
He DID ask the turtle, and another animal that I can't recall off the top of my head, before he asked the owl in the less commonly shown longer version.
Obviously the longer the commercial, the more the advertiser has to pay so the owl only version may have been a money saving effort. Also, I think as time went on, the shorter version was more common. I remember the full version when I was very small but I don't think I've seen it at all since then.

Fun fact: I actually conducted a similar experiment during a history final, it wasn’t really a final as much a survey for the next semester. for one of the questions it was how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. While it serve more as an excuse to give us all tootsie pops, I was determined to answer the question. Everyone else had already finished theirs and turned it in, I was sitting at my desk licking it once and making a tally my notebook. I did received extra credit.
Watching since the beginning of Game Theory and im so happy to see the circle getting filled but also sad because I've been theorizing about what this new theory channel could be and then it's food theory. Not that it's bad just definitely against expectation, I'm loving it so far :D

Sponge : 108 total passes til center
Adult Tongue: 161 Total passes til center
Kid Tongue :172 Total passes til center.
This was in 1979 mind you so Your results may vary.
Guess they were just slightly tougher back in my day.

I... I'm not that bad at math, am I?
Not bad at math, it was just continuing the joke of the whole video where Matt wasn't interested in anything Researcher 3 had to say, so he would have automatically failed even if he'd had the lowest number. You can tell they are really good friends just from that one joke.
It's about him being the lowest from all the others
It may have been continuing the joke, but they were all WAY under 200, which seems unlikely ... or not, since he said 117 when he finished. Also, again, go Amy!
He was bullying that guy the entire video as a joke

Reminder to those who want to attempt this sort of thing: you don't have to do it in one go! You can do this over the span of a week or two, just take care to dry it thoroughly between sessions, like maybe with a cold airdrier.
I did this in the car when I was like 6. It took me like 260 something licks

Buying several tootsie pops
counting the licks PER SIDE, and writing the number down. There is ALWAYS a thinner side.
and then averaging them.
the thinner side was an average of 150 (rounded, because it's been half my life ago)
the thicker side was an average of 300 (also rounded)
I didnt now some sides were thinner

I love how food theory is more “hands on” because you’re dealing with food, something more accessible and experimental.
I'm mad at myself for forgetting to subscribe to food theory and now the RUclips recommendations made me remember it
i dont even remember him asking the turtle. i’ve only seen the owl version of the commercial.
I actually saw the turtle version just a few days ago, what a coincidence!
He DID ask the turtle, and another animal that I can't recall off the top of my head, before he asked the owl in the less commonly shown longer version.
that’s interesting. i wonder if location has something to do with it. obviously i’m not gonna say where i love but it’s interesting to think about it.
@@zoinksss1372 Well I live in the south and I've also only ever seen the owl one
Obviously the longer the commercial, the more the advertiser has to pay so the owl only version may have been a money saving effort.
Also, I think as time went on, the shorter version was more common. I remember the full version when I was very small but I don't think I've seen it at all since then.

I actually conducted a similar experiment during a history final, it wasn’t really a final as much a survey for the next semester. for one of the questions it was how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. While it serve more as an excuse to give us all tootsie pops, I was determined to answer the question. Everyone else had already finished theirs and turned it in, I was sitting at my desk licking it once and making a tally my notebook. I did received extra credit.
