Hey Matt, I have a theory for you! Sourdough! So I’ve always heard that a sourdough starter will change based off of the natural yeast it picks up from the air. So according to legend, two starters that were broken off from the same starter, fed the exact same amount every week, used in identical recipes, will result in different tasting bread if one of them has been living in a different state for long enough. Fact, or San Francisco marketing ploy???
Yeast Evolution: in a thousand years, MatPat's 22-greats grandchildren are unfreezing the ancient RUclipsr's yeast colony to sequence its DNA and check for mutations in their own yeast. They find that the ancient yeast has almost no genetic modification from wild Earth yeast compared to their space yeast found on Alpha-Centauri-A.
from my little understanding, this comes from the fact that whenever you use it or its exposed to air, new wild yeast gets mixed into it and that is most definetly different locally you would need to have a testgroup that might have been used in different states but in IDENTICAL Sterile enviroments, where the factor of newly added wild yeast could be eliminated. if theres still a significant difference, you can chuck it up to slight differences in the origin samples taken, measuring errors or even outlandish explanations like the slightly different amount of Gravity exposure you get from being higher or lower relativ to the planets core aswell as how far away from the equator you are, which btw ALSO changes your distance to the core but also how much of the earths planetary moment you experience. I might be completelly wrong here, i just went with my existing knowledge and intuition on this question. btw, the plants used for the flour also make a major difference, example i experienced myself is that you cannot make a good baguette with german flour, never like the french do it, cause both countries use different species of wheat for their flour, resulting in different types of bread. havent done a good test series on this but from what i can tell, french made baguette is innatelly dried but becomes stale slower than german made baguettes, which initially are much softer and "juicier" than their french counterparts but turn stale faster! also they taste different. I still prefer the german made version, i like my bread soft and squishy.
In high school, my buddy and I did our own experiment on the difference between left and right twixes. We found that left twix tasted like they had more caramel. In the end, we were both able to identify left vs right twix bars in blind taste tests nearly every time.
That’s actually pretty interesting. Are they still identifiable today? Or have the years worn down that skill you gained in Highschool? It’s interesting how we can hone into something and notice the most minuscule of details. Kudos to you and your buddy
Or Fatpat have an excuse to stuff his guts with almost 208 twix packs and do not feel remorse; one of these days well'have him with a turtle neck for hide the double chin
So if you buy a pack labelled “Two Right” and eat the “Left” Twix from that packet, do you have a better experience than someone who eats the “Right” Twix from a pack labelled “Two Left”? 🤔
Next time you do an episode like this, you should do Confidence Testing or Confidence Intervals. This would have been a really cool way to teach introductory statistics and Error testing
Its interesting because at work during my break when I didnt get a lunch. I would buy a Twix bar, and I didnt care which side whether it was right or left. and the Twix bars felt like a 50/50 on tasting more like a cookie or tasting more like a chocolate bar. I then came to a hypothesis that the 50/50 im getting is probably linked to grabbing Right vs Left. My conclusion became 100% certain that Left Twix tasted more like a cookie and Right Twix tasted more like a Chocolate bar. Looking into sources online, I found out the Twix bars recipes were placed differently. When I made a statement to a group of friends that I like Left Twix more, they said there isnt any difference.... and it made me rethink my conclusion. After buying a bag of Twix, I failed the blind taste test but I also kept them solid cold in the fridge making them both taste crunchy like a cookie... After watching this video, Im still not sure if there is a difference. Coke and Pepsi are very easy to tell the difference. But idk if the Twix bars have a distinct taste difference like that.... Its something I keep testing, but get inconsistent results
They all taste like chocolate peanuts to me, and I don't like chocolate peanuts. Sometimes they're stale, I guess. I knoq a guy who loves them, even wanted the bar that was in the fridge for almost a whole summer
@@jadarius14 and I did not know that 😅 perhaps they taste that way because they're always so close to other peanut candy in the store? And is it made more like a kit Kat then?
To get a more accurate "crunchiness" test, you could have performed a standard tensile or bend test, basically determining how much force is required to break a twix bar (though, since twix contain some semisolid-compounds (caramel, chocolate) the strain-rate dependency of the strength would be tricky).
I'm so glad he pointed out the inconsistency of their ad campaign. I noticed as a kid they switched which one "cascaded" chocolate, and thought I was crazy
I've been saying for years now, YEARS, that left twix is superior. Ever since they started that whole thing, every time I've gotten a twix that was broken before I unwrapped it, it has been a right twix package and I've never had any broken left twix.
Now, *here's* a chaotic evil move: Instead of left or right, it's close/far. And if you wanna do the CE move, pick the close half of both sticks. And I don't mean along the small half. I mean _split the bars themselves parallel to the longest axis._ [EDIT]: the "residual moisture" hypothesis seems to be the most logical explanation for why the upper/left twix is louder, IMO.
I kinda love the fact that at 3:30 the text giving up a right is bolded. That is legally accurate formatting. The attention to detail is why I come back to these channels regularly.
It could just be that the "Crunch" has less to do with freshness and more to do with air? (Maybe the weight of the "left" Twix ended up pressing down on the lower bar compressing it and affecting the crunch?)
Let's face it, they could make the most controversial take on anything minuscule and STILL make it interesting. it reminds me of TRAIL MIX; TEAM HANDFUL OR TEAM ONE BY ONE.. but they're all the same.
MatPat: I guarantee you will know whether you should be eating left or right twix by the end of the episode. 5 minutes later MatPat: Alright so we have left left, left right, right left, and right right twix
I think Mars should make the bars different. Like you said: we get more excited for food that are uneaten. Make the bars different enough and you get a TON of earned or shared media through discussions and debates over which one is better (to a greater extent than it happens now) as well as people getting more excited for the next bar.
Twix’s whole marketing strategy plays on the fact that everybody knows that there probably isn’t a significant difference between the two Twix bars. And that’s the key, “probably”. Their strategy is based on the fact that consumers will keep purchasing Twix bars in the hope that they will be the ones to find that true difference, the difference, not in packaging, but in creation. Their marketing plays on the very concept of hope, the feeling or desire for something to happen, in this case, solving the mystery of the differences between the two Twix bars.
Can I say that my favorite thing is that the end card is purposefully prepared for? I hate when video's ending can't be seen because of them, and this was done perfectly.
I mean, it wasn’t rlly done that well… just a countdown to it on an image if his channel page. I’ve seen much better ones where they have an actual end card with actual spaces for the next videos and have the information or patrons or thanks or links or whatever displayed around them so nothing is blocked.
Once, I asked a friend, "You've got Twix, right?" and offered him a dollar for one. Everybody in the immediate vicinity unanimously screamed at me, "TWIX LEFT, OR TWIX RIGHT?!" To which, somebody else screamed, "WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?!" Glorious chaos.
Reminder of the best green text I've seen in a while: >sitting blindfolded >woman in labcoat feeds me a Twix >"Left" >she marks her notes >329 consecutive correct guesses
Twix sizes have also shrunk a lot of size... but the price didn't change. Same for a lot of different candy bars (Bounty, Mars, Sneakers...) they went from 50g to 42g or so.
Inflation has hit pretty much every product, however, due to people not wanting to spend much on candy they make the candy smaller instead of raising the price. Good marketing unfortunate for candy lovers.
While you say "top" and "bottom" could be a factor in the crunchiness, in all of the boxes of Twix I have seen (and bought many, many delicious Twix from) they are shipped flat, with the label facing up.
You know, the fun thing about this, is that this seems to be a perfect example of a fishing expedition. Look into enough variables, and eventually, one of them will produce statistically significant results, while the "true" result is actually the null hypothesis.
I just realised with the packaging for 'Two right' and 'Two left' the text is on opposite sides. Meaning, with the text at the top, the 'different' 'Twix' as it were...would be on the same side
on the taste test: since right-twix people eat the right twix first and vise versa you will get supporting evidence that you are right when eating twix since your preferred side (the one you ate first) always tastes better
at 8:19 , yeah until you find out that these boxes were shipped to the store in a fabric 18-wheeler cargo trailer while the other ones were shipped in a regular 18-wheeler cargo trailer
This is just me being completely obsessed with numbers and how they work out perfectly even sometimes but I appreciate the 208 bars you bought. That works out to being a one Twix every wk of the yr for exactly 4 yrs straight.
I remember when Twix had 4 flavors. Caramel, Peanut Butter, Cookies and Cream, and Chocolate Creme. Sometimes I find a Peanut Butter with Chocolate Cookie, but it's mostly just the Caramel. I miss the choices.
Another possibility for the crispiness could be the seal on the back of the package. It's really the only thing asymmetric about the wrapper, so that might contribute (although how I have no idea)
Now i need a quality control round where you Twix bars upside down so the left is now on the bottom, and right is now on the top Gotta check to see if orientation actually matters
@@Renovartio haha. I don't even know if there was an ad campaign that claimed this. But that was the rumour that I heard and believed. If you wanted more cookie buy the 'left only' if you want more caramel buy 'right only' I preferred cookie.
Interestingly enough, Vsause made the opposite observation with a larger number of jelly beans. Either the test subject had to pick a flavor them self or they had one (randomly) chosen for them as a result of a test and then both groups were asked about if they were satisfied with their choice/ what they were chosen. The majority of those who picked their own flavor were dissatisfied and would rather have had chosen another flavor given the chance, meanwhile the majority of those who had one picked by the crew were mostly satisfied with the choice and wouldn't have had picked another flavor given the same chance as the other test subjects.
Jelly beans are a weird case though since they all taste different (often different from what they appear) and possess different colors. If the test were truly just about choice they would have a special batch of jelly beans that are all flavored the same just with different colors. Jelly beans are honestly one of the worst candies you could do that experiment with since there are so many variables involved with them. I think something like gum/spice drops would be a little bit better of a choice.

I was in a convenience store the other day and I didn't buy any, but I noticed the labels of both Left Twix and Right Twix packs had different images of the candy bars. I can't remember which, but one of the packs showed a thicker cookie in the candy than the other pack and I thought, well maybe they did make each side different. I didn't really think much of it since I don't buy candy these days because it's too expensive anymore. Remember when candy bars cost only 50 cents? Now you are lucky to find any for less than $2, especially from convenience stores and gas stations.

Matt's little laugh at 6:41 proves the mid-episode regret to me more than anything else ever could.
I fuckin cackled as I do every time he does that little chuckle bc you KNOW this guy is like 🎶 “life is a fucking nightmare” 🎶
Man wrote an entire paragraph
from my little understanding, this comes from the fact that whenever you use it or its exposed to air, new wild yeast gets mixed into it and that is most definetly different locally
you would need to have a testgroup that might have been used in different states but in IDENTICAL Sterile enviroments, where the factor of newly added wild yeast could be eliminated.
if theres still a significant difference, you can chuck it up to slight differences in the origin samples taken, measuring errors or even outlandish explanations like the slightly different amount of Gravity exposure you get from being higher or lower relativ to the planets core aswell as how far away from the equator you are, which btw ALSO changes your distance to the core but also how much of the earths planetary moment you experience.
@@firebladeentertainment5739 Such a long essay, and such a short conclusion XD
In high school, my buddy and I did our own experiment on the difference between left and right twixes. We found that left twix tasted like they had more caramel. In the end, we were both able to identify left vs right twix bars in blind taste tests nearly every time.
That’s actually pretty interesting. Are they still identifiable today? Or have the years worn down that skill you gained in Highschool? It’s interesting how we can hone into something and notice the most minuscule of details. Kudos to you and your buddy
just wanted to add another comment saying how cool i think this is
Never been a fan of twix but MatPat can make everything amazing and made me almost wanting to taste some for FOOD THEORY:))
How could you twix is superior *sob* /j
@@osheridan bruh twix is so overrated
Watching MatPat get into Twix Lore is oddly the fun I needed today.
One time as a joke, my sister and I had an argument in the cashier line at a grocery store about right versus left Twix. It was a lot of fun lol
Who won tho
The joke was pretty funny and all... BUT... Lets get to the real questions shall we, who won the joke argument
who was left and who was right
and even more importantly, who won?

8:25 i just cant with the matpat picture holding a twix in his mouth😭😩🤣
So if you buy a pack labelled “Two Right” and eat the “Left” Twix from that packet, do you have a better experience than someone who eats the “Right” Twix from a pack labelled “Two Left”? 🤔

Next time you do an episode like this, you should do Confidence Testing or Confidence Intervals. This would have been a really cool way to teach introductory statistics and Error testing
that assumes matpat knows that stuff, which his previous surveying and stat analysis has proven he doesnt
Your brain is playing tricks on you
They all taste like chocolate peanuts to me, and I don't like chocolate peanuts. Sometimes they're stale, I guess. I knoq a guy who loves them, even wanted the bar that was in the fridge for almost a whole summer
@@abigailwright8492 but twix don't have peanuts...
@@jadarius14 and I did not know that 😅 perhaps they taste that way because they're always so close to other peanut candy in the store? And is it made more like a kit Kat then?
Coke and Pepsi are not that different
To get a more accurate "crunchiness" test, you could have performed a standard tensile or bend test, basically determining how much force is required to break a twix bar (though, since twix contain some semisolid-compounds (caramel, chocolate) the strain-rate dependency of the strength would be tricky).
I love this channel so much.

I'm so glad he pointed out the inconsistency of their ad campaign. I noticed as a kid they switched which one "cascaded" chocolate, and thought I was crazy
I've always thought it was one of the dumbest ad campaigns of all time. I don't get why they are still using it.
in "next" ad that guy will be throw out because of corporate espionage. xD
I've been saying for years now, YEARS, that left twix is superior. Ever since they started that whole thing, every time I've gotten a twix that was broken before I unwrapped it, it has been a right twix package and I've never had any broken left twix.

Can't believe he talked about rivalries and didn't mention Goku vs Vegeta
Now, *here's* a chaotic evil move:
Instead of left or right, it's close/far. And if you wanna do the CE move, pick the close half of both sticks. And I don't mean along the small half. I mean _split the bars themselves parallel to the longest axis._
[EDIT]: the "residual moisture" hypothesis seems to be the most logical explanation for why the upper/left twix is louder, IMO.
I kinda love the fact that at 3:30 the text giving up a right is bolded. That is legally accurate formatting. The attention to detail is why I come back to these channels regularly.

MatPat: Alright so we have left left, left right, right left, and right right twix
9:40 i thought u were already on at least 5 different ones.

Good marketing unfortunate for candy lovers.
yup, Mattpatt has an episode on "shrinkflation" called, "They're stealing you food!"
While you say "top" and "bottom" could be a factor in the crunchiness, in all of the boxes of Twix I have seen (and bought many, many delicious Twix from) they are shipped flat, with the label facing up.
Same here, based on the deliveries my workplace gets.
i love these adds!
But right is always right, whereas left is only sometimes right.
Team Right!
I love how they’re using random people as test when i feel like everyone was taught to not take candy from strangers
Not a stranger when its famous
Considering other things many adults will take from strangers, I suspect adults are willing to be less careful than kids in many ways.
Follow up experiment: How long does a package need to be upside down for the "top" status to be moved from one bar to the other?
When the bottom one starts to like it.

0:12 I did not expect that lol
at 8:19 , yeah until you find out that these boxes were shipped to the store in a fabric 18-wheeler cargo trailer while the other ones were shipped in a regular 18-wheeler cargo trailer

I remember when Twix had 4 flavors. Caramel, Peanut Butter, Cookies and Cream, and Chocolate Creme. Sometimes I find a Peanut Butter with Chocolate Cookie, but it's mostly just the Caramel. I miss the choices.
I miss the peanut butter and chocolate cookie. That was my favorite

I thought everyone knew that the right has more caramel and the left Twix has more cookie... I'm questioning everything now.
6:22 bruh I feel bad for him after that line
Another possibility for the crispiness could be the seal on the back of the package. It's really the only thing asymmetric about the wrapper, so that might contribute (although how I have no idea)
2:59 - "I just care about this more than they did" ...and that's not just a theory! It's also why we keep watching each and every episode.
Now i need a quality control round where you Twix bars upside down so the left is now on the bottom, and right is now on the top

... what? how old are you?
@@Renovartio -1

“Because the universe hates me”

I was in a convenience store the other day and I didn't buy any, but I noticed the labels of both Left Twix and Right Twix packs had different images of the candy bars. I can't remember which, but one of the packs showed a thicker cookie in the candy than the other pack and I thought, well maybe they did make each side different. I didn't really think much of it since I don't buy candy these days because it's too expensive anymore. Remember when candy bars cost only 50 cents? Now you are lucky to find any for less than $2, especially from convenience stores and gas stations.
