So nostalgic! I was born and raised in Kalihi before moving out of Hawaii. Actually, moved out of the USA to Japan some 30 years ago. While the now Kalihi has changed much compared to when I was there but still brings back so much memories. Thanks for sharing my home town and when I visit Hawaii next time, I'll make sure I visit the places introduced on your YT. Mahalo!
If I remember correctly, Diners by Upscale Hawaii used to be New Diners which actually used to be Diner’s Drive Inn, the original location that opened in the 60's and hung around till maybe the 80's? Had expanded to a few other locations including one in Waimalu Shopping Center which also changed hands a few times. That place was all about the mac salad!
I still remember the original Diners on Keeaumoku. Used love to grind the meatloaf, gravy all over and extra Mac salad. Will need to try Upscale location soon. Those teas look interesting.
I remember going to this location in the 60s for their plate lunches and their slush float. My mom new the owner, Kiyoshi Sugai, and my sister actually worked the counter at the Kalihi location. This place is as local as it gets!
I only remember the old Diners on Keeamoku. Used to eat there all the time, loved their plate lunches. I agree the the essential aspect of Chicken Katsu is the quality of the sauce. Mahalo and Aloha.
Felix you hit the nail on the head when you said “the sea of bubble tea shops.” I remember when my tried and true Coffee or Tea? was kinda the only one I knew. Now I feel like it blew up and is a bit saturated with so many shops seemingly on every corner. I feel like some shops are only for show and a good IG pic but their drinks are trash. So thank you for taking the time to show us new places and giving a genuine review. I do have to thank you two for expanding my horizons and trying new places. 😊
Those drinks at Yi Fang looked so good! I’ll have to try that passion fruit tea. Love sour drinks! Felix’s comment in the ng’s regarding “smelling the mildew” cracked me up!
We try Diners yesterday evening and it was so good… My husband had the steak & lobster and I had the steak & shrimp and we try a small fried poke bowl that was the bomb… yes everyone should try it… everything was onolicious… thanks Amanda and Felix… keep up all the local eats…
I love roasted garlic 😍 but I wouldn’t eat that dish if I was on a date lol, that’s a lot of garlic. Steak and lobster is such a great combination and that entire lobster tail looked massive! Wow .
Wow, no way! Steak and lobster for $24??? Next time I'm in Kalihi, I'm heading to Diners! Felix, you are correct....you should always order steak a step below what you want because it's going to cook a little bit by the time you get it.
Great review. I like that Mr. Song is in the background by his Van lol. He has the best snacks. Go to sakana for drinks and get the fried chicken, shoyu pork, champuru and some shiso musubis. Thanks for doing this review of Diners. havent been there since it changed. That steak looked killah
Those teas are great!! We live in Okinawa, Japan. We have a Quickly tea shop across the street from our house. They have tasty teas, smoothies, and tea with juice drinks. We love the boba teas!!
I always drive by Diners and wonder if I should try it out. I will now because that Garlic Crusted Steak looks good. And yeah, asking guys for Mac Salad or Toss is like asking someone if they want the receipt for a 2 dollar item at 7-11? Thanks for showing 🤙
Next time try the Diners by Upscale Hawaii Prime Rib Special which is ONLY available on Fridays for $24.00. It has so much herbs and way better than Ray's because it is very flavorful with the herbs.
Hello from Rapid City, South Dakota! I love your local foodie spots. I have found some must go to spots for my trip in May. I've been saving them in Google maps so I can find them all. I am hoping for more north shore locations. Hope you are heading that way soon! Thanks!!!
Went to Yi Fang yesterday, and had the Yi Fang Tea and the Roselle with kumquat. They were both very good! Although, jokingly, the owner said that he may have “sold” the Roselle too much because they ran out of the flowers.😂
Hi guys ... found this L&L chicken katsu sauce recipe on-line.... I haven"t tried it yet but thought you guy might want o vlog it. I think L&L makes the best katsu sauce. KATSU SAUCE 1/2 c worcestershire sauce 1 c ketchup 1 c sugar 2 1/2 c water 1/3 tsp salt 1/4 tsp chicken bouillon 1/4 tsp ground pepper 1/4 tsp garlic powder 2-3 dash tabasco sauce
Omg Yi Fang is finally open!?!? I tried to go there last month because they put a listing on yelp before they were actually open and I was so confused lol
Back in da day day 80es it was called Dinners. And it was broke the jaw. Real original Hawaiian food. Now junk. Even zippies . Bra and sista I miss the good old days. Now mainland California
So ono. The Upscale half is definitely upscale with the best ingredients at an affordable price. The Diner is comfort food. Could hear the crunch of the katsu and taste the teri pork. Yi Fang looked so ono and interesting. Yummy tea connoisseurs.
It's made of berries from Hawthorne plant. Has healing properties and great for prevention of heart disease and they say help with weight loss. People make tea and desserts out of it. Haw Flakes are like a thin sweet and tart wafer about the size of a fifty cent piece and eaten like candy originally by Chinese people. They come rolled up and kind of look like a giant fire cracker (most common packaging but come in different shapes now). Taste kind of like dried cranberries. I was asked by a cop once what they were. 🤣
@@AmandaFelixEats Felix would like the fruit roll-up - like stuff or other softer products made with it that you can possibly find on the islands. Still sweet but more sour in comparison to flakes and flavour is more intense so you really get the sense of what the berry tastes like. I described them as larger because originally they were about 1.25" in diameter and in a 4" long pack in the 70s and earlier when I was a kid. Similar wrapping tho. They progressively shrunk in size in the 80's and more sloppily made(less uniform shape).
Yes. Graces has good katsu sauce. Shiros, also has a traditional katsu that is ono. The other places seem like foreign attempts at a "sweet sauce". Too many places have chili sauce or pineapple juice in it. Yuck.
You had me fooled. I thought the original Diners Drive Inn came back until I watched your intro. But this Diners has really ono looking food. BTW, I think the original closed a very long time ago.
Upscale food was so much better when they had the food truck parked in front of their house behind Damian schools. The portions are smaller now days and not as "upscale".
Gotta agree. I remember getting sunburned while waiting for them to cook up a bunch of plate lunches for me fresh at their food truck behind Damien HS.
Aloha Cory, we’ve grown up saying “Hana hou” at concerts or performances to mean encore or one more time🤙🏻 I’m sure in olelo hawaii there’s a way to say it!
The Original Diners had bomb burgers & mustard mayo sauce before you folk were born. Never tried the Old Diners plate lunches in the 80's. In 2013 tried a mix plate from 3rd owner of Diners was not good, never went back.
Great video! Diners goes way back… originally owned by the Sugai family in the 70’s-80’s… Jumbo’s was also owned by another of their family member…
Grew up in Kalihi so mahalo for featuring ono plate lunch spots to visit and revisit on my next trip back home!

Hey guys! Quick question. Should I invest in a waterproof hip bag while I island hop throughout Hawaii?
My favorite Yi Fang is the winter melon lemon tea with almond jelly (50% sweet). So good! We will try the diner food in April!
My go to is there is the honey dipped fried chicken and the garlic rib eye and garlic shrimp combo
That sounds ono🤤 definitely need to try next time 🤙🏻

water
1/3 tsp
salt
1/4 tsp
chicken bouillon
1/4 tsp

too bad everybody's franchise kinda deviate from the recipe as cost cutting or lazyness, so that real taste is weak...
