God, what a class act this man is. He was my hero as a kid. Now, over three decades later, it's beautiful to see my childhood idolatry for him was well deserved. Dude's not even on the field and I still feel choked up just watching shoot the shit. Here's to #23.
57 year Yankee fan here. Maybe my favorite Yankee moment of all time, was Don Mattingly's home run in the only post season series he played in. The chills.....Brought tears to my eyes then and still get the same thrill every time I watch it.
Me too! Chills Everytime. Such a great moment. I love Mattingly so much if his team every faced the Yankees in the World Series I'd root for Donnie Baseball all day.
I love Don Mattingly He was my favorite player. I was so happy when he made it to the playoffs and so sad when it ended so abruptly and ended up retiring. I miss him playing first base. ☹️
Totally agree. They ended up giving it to Clemens when he already had won the Cy Young. But i believe Mattingly deserved it since he was probably the best all around player on offensive and was prob best defensive fielding 1st basemen in baseball. He even hit career best 352 avg that season with power!
As a child, my baseball hero in the until he retired. Was always freaking out when I met him. Can't wait to meet him again, maybe for an after game beer.
I’m big Mattingly fan as well, I still have the jersey he signed for me at Rangers Stadium and I took a picture with Steinbrenner that same day. One of my favorite moments. Memorabilia for us men is like gold! Thank you Don Mattingly 🙏🏽✝️
Think about how Paul O'Neill would voice this: "People often come up to me and tell me," 'You're my second favorite Yankee of all-time'. I ask them who's their favorite..."IT'S ALWAYS MATTINGLY!"
In the 1990’s, I lived in Metropolis, Illinois. I had a job interview in Evansville, & stopped at Mattingly’s 23, his sports bar/restaurant. We sat in the Mickey Mantle booth, & ordered lunch and I ordered a draft beer. The place wasn’t busy, but I had bought a hat and T-shirt. As I was drinking my draft beer, I noticed a bottle cap frozen into the bottom of the glass. I told the waitress, she apologized & said the boss would like to see this. So here comes Donnie Baseball bringing me my replacement beer. He comped our lunch over my objections, and couldn’t have been a nicer guy! (I’d include photos, but this post doesn’t permit it)
While being a rabid baseball fan as a kid ( Brooklyn Dodgers , from the early 1950’s until they left for Los Ángeles ), my subsequent life took me in different directions and I stopped being a fan ( after the Dodgers move completely broke my heart ) . Now as an 83 year old grandpa , I see a lot of baseball nostalgia from my old days on RUclips . I’ve seen many videos of Don Mattingly playing baseball with the Yankees and in interviews of him after retirement as an active player , a coach and as a manager . Looking at his stats , reviewing what I’ve seen of him as an exciting , elegant and talented player and at him as a very decent , humble and good-hearted human being , a true baseball star and idol , I can’t for the life of me see why he is not in the hall of fame . . . YET . Sports writers , get your stuff together, check out this man’s significant accomplishments on the field and the class and dignity he gave to the game of baseball and VOTE HIM IN ! George Lewis , Sr.
Every kid that’s a baseball fan has that one player that was it for him. Mine was Mattingly, he can do no wrong for me. Had a lot of Yankee shirts over the years, but the navy blue Yankee shirts with the players name on the back? His was the only one I ever had. I was 24 in 1995 when he finally got to the post season and I can’t tell how great that was for me to watch and for him to perform like he did in that series against the Mariners. I’m still bitter about that strike shortened ‘94 season where the Yankees were on fire and destined to make the playoffs. Man do I wish those teams he was on were better and made the playoffs often. I’m sure all Yankee fans on here know, Mattingly no doubt would’ve performed at a high level had they made the playoffs. He was just that kind of player, he’s a legend to me.
Don Mattingly's batting style had Mattingly in a crouch, a lot like Pete Rose, Mattingly would explode and jump out of his crouch for power! But this effected his, back that would have repercussions unfortunately.... Hey, If Bill Mazeroski is in the HOF, I know Don Mattingly belongs!! Here's to "The Hitman" "Donny Baseball"Don Mattingly Say Hello to Cooperstown!......
I know that baseball s all about launch angle and HR hitters now (as mentioned), but I've always thought "high average" hitters seem to understand the game better... and make some of the best coaches/managers.
I still remember that play when he caught a foul ball and then ate a fan's popcorn. That was classic. And the fan did not mind one bit. In fact I think he loved it.
He did have a great playoffs his last year! I thought he was going to stay but I guess he didn’t have many options. For some reason I’m thinking that was like the first wild card year or something. He should have been part of those teams the first couple years after he left. One of my favorite.
I think it was not given to him because of no World Series titles other than as hitting coach and bench coach while Girardi had won 3 rings as a player and had prior managerial experience. Don going to LA with Torre and being named his heir apparent was a good move and now he is in Miami where Jeter is GM. I do not think be wants to manage the Yankees at this point.
Donnie Baseball!!!belongs in the hall of fame!!!! 23 forever!!!! So does Thurman Munson 15 Graig Nettles best defensive third baseman, Roger Maris and Sparky Lyle 28.
His career was cut short by a back injury that lowered his numbers in his last 5 seasons so he only has 9 years where he was 100% healthy and the Yankees were not that good in the late 80s and very early 90s. His MVP season was remarks me as was the season right before and after and his power numbers were rising until 87 when a sharp decline began. His batting average dipped yo .256 in 1990 due to his back injury. He did make adjustments and renamed between .288 and .304 those last 5 seasons. He was having a good season in 1990 and the Yankees were in first place after 97 games until the strike was started and the rest of the season cancelled altogher. In 95 the NLDS which the Yankees lose in 5 games Mattingly batted .417 with 10 hirs, 4 of which were doubles, and one home run. He also had 6 RBI. His career stats include 2153 hits in 7003 at bats giving him a .307 avg. He had 222 home runs and 1099 RBI. He had a 1st base record 9 gold gloves and 3 silver slugger awards. He won the AL batting title in 1984 and AL MVP in 1985. He also displayed exemplary character during an often tumultuous era for the Yankees. After writing this down I agree that he belongs in the hall of fame.
What Don doesn't know is Rod Carew wanted to be like Don Mattingly as a hitter. Lol! It's weird hearing Donnie talk about being intimidated by certain players. I always thought Donnie was the one who was intimidating just seeing him at the plate with that menacing mustache and knowing he could rip the cover off the next pitch. I did read an article, I think it was sports illustrated years ago, about the story when he sat down with Ted Williams and they talked about hitting. I specifically remember them describing how they would smell the bat after a foul ball to see if they could smell wood smoke in which they replied 'yes'. I still have my Donnie signed card from the 80's. It was a real pleasure meeting the man.
The question isn’t whether you would rather have Trout or Harper. The question is, “Who would you rather have around them.” Baseball isn’t golf. It’s a team sport that relies on accomplishments of several players in different positions at the same time. Wholly unpredictable. As bad as the officiating can be, it’s difficult for even an ump to throw a game. So when it comes to the World Series, Houston should romp. But the Phillies have been hitting and pitching. Their Achilles heel might be their defense.
The man that every one in baseball and the fans called “Donny Baseball” doesn’t get in the hall of Fame would be a disgrace to the baseball writers of this great sport!
Basically, what he is saying about players trying to launch balls pitched at them upwards of 95 mph describes the Dodgers piss poor WS showing in 2018 --- and also vs. the Brewers. Lengthening of the swing is the trend, LMFAO.
Donnie Baseball is 12 yrs. of basking in the glory, but never coming close to delivering the WS ring goods. He is an exercise in futility. Don't forget that in the world of the NYY front office the motto is, "what have you done for me lately?" Like Gen. Macarthur used to say, "there is no substitute for victory". It's all or nothing in the world of the NYY organization. With today's mega million dollar salaries , I tend to enthusiastically agree. Pay all that money and not win ?? I don't think so.
I was a baseball/Yankees obsessive nine-year-old in 1984 and so got to see his prime. Still my favorite player of all time.
My all time favorite Yankee, met him twice, great guy, tremendous player.
One of the classiest baseball players of all time
Agreed. Class act.
God, what a class act this man is.
He was my hero as a kid. Now, over three decades later, it's beautiful to see my childhood idolatry for him was well deserved.
Dude's not even on the field and I still feel choked up just watching shoot the shit.
Here's to #23.
For about a three year period, Mattingly was THE best hitter in baseball.
57 year Yankee fan here. Maybe my favorite Yankee moment of all time, was Don Mattingly's home run in the only post season series he played in. The chills.....Brought tears to my eyes then and still get the same thrill every time I watch it.
Hang on to the roof!!
Me too! Chills Everytime. Such a great moment. I love Mattingly so much if his team every faced the Yankees in the World Series I'd root for Donnie Baseball all day.
I watched it on TV, but I heard from people who attended that it felt like the stadium was going to crumble
Imagine if he wouldn't have had his back problems. Class act.
I will always believe Don Mattingly was one of the greatest to ever put on the pinstripes. I still hope and pray his days in the Bronx are not over.
I will tell him you said that when I see him!!
@@averlymattingly5961 are you in the same family as don?
I hope one day to see him in pinstripes again managing the Yankees to a world series. He deserves a ring.
TigBitties86 x that would be amazing
I agree.
I love Don Mattingly He was my favorite player. I was so happy when he made it to the playoffs and so sad when it ended so abruptly and ended up retiring. I miss him playing first base. ☹️
It's a crime that he didn't get the Yankees job. He IS the Yankees. This interview verifies what we all know. He knows baseball.
He'll probably have a chance if he builds up this Marlin's team. You never know
He belongs in NY with the Yankees
Well said ;)
@@mitchconner2021 Especially if Aaron Boone has a few more years of not meeting preseason standards
Don mattingly said in an interview that he wasn't ready for the Yankee managerial job.
He needs to be in the hall of fame
My favorite Yankee of all time, met him on a plane and he was the coolest most gracious guy! Should be a HOFer
He is in my baseball hall of fame.
Don Mattingly should have won the MVP in 1986 also. He was too good for everyone.
Totally agree. They ended up giving it to Clemens when he already had won the Cy Young. But i believe Mattingly deserved it since he was probably the best all around player on offensive and was prob best defensive fielding 1st basemen in baseball. He even hit career best 352 avg that season with power!
I will tell him you said that!
Agreed. I don't think a pitcher who makes 35 starts should win the MVP over a guy who plays 150+
Put Donnie Baseball in the Hall of Fame where he belongs!!!!
Mister Mattingly has always been Donny Baseball, a highly talented and classy individual:)
As a child, my baseball hero in the until he retired. Was always freaking out when I met him. Can't wait to meet him again, maybe for an after game beer.
Love Mattingly even though I'm a Met fan...
He signed my ball at the Stadium in '88 when I was 12. Still my favorite Yankee.
I hope you still have that ball.
Great player, one of my favorites of all time.
I’m big Mattingly fan as well, I still have the jersey he signed for me at Rangers Stadium and I took a picture with Steinbrenner that same day. One of my favorite moments. Memorabilia for us men is like gold! Thank you Don Mattingly 🙏🏽✝️

I think he should be in the hall of fame. Too bad he never got his world series ring. He was in the in between years of Yankees Championships.

Amazing that he carried the team for a decade and only made the playoffs his last year.
I loved Donnie Baseball as a kid and still love him just as much today.
63 year old NY sports fan. This is my favorite athlete ever.
The Hitman is basically talking about the 2021-2022 Yankees…Inability to score. Love his insights
That face he could have been an actor.
pretty likable, even for red sox fan,
Ryland
That is a high praise coming from a Red Sox fan. You respect the guy.
Don Mattingly's batting style had Mattingly in a crouch, a lot like Pete Rose, Mattingly would explode and jump out of his crouch for power! Don Mattingly was a great baseball player but an even better human being. MLB 2023 needs more of that.
I still remember that play when he caught a foul ball and then ate a fan's popcorn. That was classic. And the fan did not mind one bit. In fact I think he loved it.
Oozes class and humbleness. Donnie bb
My favorite
love this guy. he and dale murphy were my favorite players growing up. shame neither of them is in the hof.
I see he finally got those sideburns cut !.....top bloke as we say in England
Still hasn't cut those sideburns!
He was baseball in the 80's. Love the hair!
This was a great show !! Donnie Baseball is a all around great guy understands Baseball like no other a true leader on and off the field ..
looks a lot like Eddie Van Halen

Should have been given the Yankees manager job
why dont yankees have him? plus you want a guy that tank cool

Best of the 80s.
Late 80s
I love this man. No homo. #DonnieBaseball
As a 9 yr old playing LL baseball, he hit .672
Donnie Baseball!!!belongs in the hall of fame!!!! 23 forever!!!! So does Thurman Munson 15 Graig Nettles best defensive third baseman, Roger Maris and Sparky Lyle 28.
Bill Mazeroski, Harold Baines, Phil Rizzuto in the HOF and Don Mattingly not? I think everyone knows the HOF is a joke.

Hate the Yankees, but "Donnie Baseball" is a great guy and very easy to root for.
The key to hitting guys like Ryan, Johnson, Clemens etc. who could bring the heat was to start your swing while you were still in the on deck circle.
MATTINGLY SHAVE THOSE DAMN SIDEBURNS
Still better than playing for Steinbrenner
Did he trim his sideburns yet?
His bad back later in his career robbed him of 100 or
More homers
Mattingly, for the last time, get rid of those sideburns!

Why don't you talk about him playing with hall famer Dave Winfield
Straight class👌
Mattingly got into his legs so he created launch angle . Watch the highlights .
The dartboard behind Don is excruciatingly distracting.
As a Mets fan Keith is number one, but I mean Donnie baseball is number 1 too
I see Mattingly hasn't shaved his sideburns!
I love me some Donnie baseball
He looks like Robin Williams

Whats launch angle?
0:12 Why do people always ask about stories after the game? I mean honestly what do they want to hear?

This was 4 years ago, before Thames ruined this current bunch.
Mattingly was the only left to hit randy Johnson well
he looks like robin williams
He was no Keith though
#HOF2023
Mattingly, borderline HOFer. Great hitter. But I think Tout is a bit over-rated. Terrific player, but not on par with Williams, Gehrig, or Foxx.....
Great player, seems like an even greater guy, but not a great manager. Not at all. Unfortunately
