Mattingly was the best player in the game for 5 years, but the HOF favors a long decent career over a a brilliant short career. There isn't any baseball fan that wouldn't take Don's best 5 years over Cal Ripken's best 5 years, but Ripken was a first ballot HOF inductee.
There are a dozen guys recently put in the HOF that were half the player he was. NBA too has suffered the same--all three pointers makes the game boring. Eliminate the three point line. Hitters need to learn to hit opposite the shift.

The Yankees keep losing in the playoffs because they aren't built to win against aces (playoff teams always have one and usually two). Strikeout guys get exposed by the best pitchers. Donny Baseball is a throwback to when baseball was a joy to watch. The home run or strikeout metric ruined the game.
Over 7000 at Bats and only 444 Strikeouts ! There are many great players who had that may in 4 years!!! Why is the low strikeout ratio not more appreciated ?....When I talked 2 a few old school pitchers from Mattingly s era....They all said Griffey Jr and DoNnie Baseball were the most feared hitters !!! And he hit 307 over his career !!!!
It’s different, not boring to me. I watch all day no matter what the teams are. Way better then football. Throw run flag, throw throw run, throw flag, flag, throw throw flag flag flag . Arm touches Brady’s shoulder pad flag
Don Mattingly is the reason I became a baseball fan... and I live in Cleveland, the Indians had no chance of winning. So to watch Yankees games was excitement, not a dull pitching fest.
Im in agreement that pitchers need to be toned down and spin rates. But nobody mentions hitters and exit velocity? It created less singles more homers, but WAAAAY more strikeouts. And that became boring real quick. Hitters are terrible today
baseball is boring because the players dont care about the game they just care about cashing their check .. they dont hit and run they dont move the runners along they dont care about whether they strike out or not
It's not because they just don't care, it's because the stats eventually proved that working counts and swinging for the fences is a better strategy for winning games than all those old-school strategies. It's not their fault that it made the game less watchable. Their job is to win games, not make fun plays.
@@jawbone78 to add to your point it's like playing tic tac toe and not putting your x in the middle first move. There are optimal ways to win and when they don't coincide with the best product to watch the rules start changing or the sport dies.
Mlb is all about show boating, there is no heart its a generation of spoiled over payed brats and cheats....ya wanna change the game if you strike out a hundred times you get half a pay check.see what happens then lol...you bat flip or studder step at third you get fined ...absolutely ridiculous.
What if a homerun the runs counted buy only half so if you hit a homerun it was .5 instead of 1 run. That might incentivize more old school baseball. Setting I have never heard anyone suggest before
That's a wild suggestion that no one will agree to, but it at least addresses the real issue, which is that hitting a home run is by far the best thing you can do as a batter, so it's the main thing players should try to do. Back in the day, people thought a player's batting average was his most important stat, and players were therefore incentivized to just put the ball in play. Now, we realize that OBP and slugging are better correlated to winning, so players are incentivized to only swing at the pitches they want, and to hit it as hard as they can.
The problem is not that we need to change the rules or add more rules. The problem is we need LESS RULES and less front office interference. The game is self policing - if you ALLOW IT TO BE. Keep allowing the shift. Keep allowing pitchers to use sticky stuff. What needs to happen is the hitters need to be HUMILIATED (that means "to be brought to humility" - humbled), to get rid of their "egos." When the egos go away, strategic hitting will come back. It IS that simple. Stop trying to FORCE things to happen, and simply ALLOW them to work themselves out.

I started supporting the Yankees because of Donnie Baseball in the 80's. Him and Keith Hernandez are my favorite first basemen.
Hernandez was underrated .
The Don Mattingly Yankees were the reason I started to love that team and MLB baseball.
The old school pride of playing in the MLB is gone, it will never be the same
too much money too many imports
Donnie Baseball, and Will Clark should be in the Hall.
Amen!

Evansville!
Meet the pitchers have nobody but themselves to blame
Unjuice the ball. Duh.
maybe they should ask him why he likes to throw at acuna?
2:40 watch the Savanah Bananas and add everything they do to the game.
I love everything about this conversation, Except the assumption from Mattingly that everyone is cheating, except his team.

Absolutely right, I got 70% of my total portfolio in crypto and I have been making good profits.
