The moment you were talking about is so true there is a moment where the lock just clicks when the doctor becomes the doctor for you. Davids, for me, was also in the minisode, but it was when Rose asked if he could change back and the look on his face when she said she wanted him to. It just solidified him for me. We can't go back, and neither can he even if he wanted to.
Matt Smith was a great Doctor, but amazingly it gets even better with Peter Capaldi. But then, that's the end. It's a very sharp dropoff after that I'm afraid
Going from David Tennant's Doctor to Matt Smith's Doctor was really hard for me because the 11th Doctor is so very... flibbityjibbit in this episode. I literally stopped watching after this episode for several YEARS before I did a rewatch from the 9th Doctor through to this episode, and I decided to give him a second chance. I'm so glad I did because he grew on me, and by the end of his run, I had learned to love him for all his kooky childlike ways - and I'm sure you will too.
My first impression of Eleven was that he was a little too goofy and silly. Then he said "Must be a hell of a scary crack in your wall." And I realized that he had been paying attention the whole time. For me, that's when Matt Smith became The Doctor.
That line is iconic. I also mentally pair it with "You know how grown-ups tell you everything's going to be fine, even though you're pretty sure it's not?" "Yeah..." "Everything's going to be fine!" which I think is a perfect comedic AND scary line. Never seems to make the reaction cuts though :(
His "I Am The Doctor" is, so far as I'm concerned, THE Doctor Who leitmotif. When it starts playing, you just know two things: The Doctor is about to do something incredibly clever and/or insane, and the baddies are about to have a very bad time.😄
It's not just the Doctor who has a fresh new face. Moffats vision of a more fantastical fairy tale approach also leads to a marked change and improvement in cinematography and music. Special mention to Murray Gold who after 4 seasons of already stellar work completely reinvents himself whilst reaching new heights.
@@dylancole1910 I can definitely see that. Also, I really agree with you on the arcs thing. I absolutely loved Smith's story arcs and it was a really fun journey with him as The Doctor.
@ have to disagree. I thought 12’s first story was terrible. An enemy rehash along with a stupid opening sequence that was pointless and just there for spectacle. The return of “the gang” didn’t improve things and neither did the Doctor’s dialogue from the show runner (the complete opposite of the sparkling dialogue given to No. 11). Then there’s the end scene of that first episode, with THAT character which began the slow transition to what we eventually got three years later….. and from which, IMHO, the series hasn’t recovered from, even now in 2024.
@@dylancole1910 12s first episode was a great opening for easing people into it who still miss 11. 11s first episode is just an all time great first episode on its own, you dont need to watch 10s era to enjoy it.

Fun fact: This episode first aired in 2010. That makes this reaction 14 years since then.
"Do everything I tell you, don't ask stupid questions, and don't wander off". I think I appreciate that summary of the opposite of the companion's role more every time I hear it.
One thing that I love (besides everything!!!) is that the actresses who play little Emilia and Amy are actually cousins!!! And they met on set!!! Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey
@@HuntingViolets sure, but having the Doctor walk through a wall of Doctors and say "hello, I'm the Doctor" was basically Moffat overcoming all arguments about how many episodes it was going to take someone to accept this incarnation as being the Doctor. Very reminiscent of Colin Baker's introduction, although handled a little more gently.
I watched this when it aired on the Saturday. Then I was out in Soho, London on the Monday night with a friend. And across the street they were doing some filming. And who should be there - Steven Moffatt. I had the incredible experience of being able to talk to him and tell him how amazing I thought this first episode was. I told him he knocked it out of the park. And I'm Scottish (as is he) so I told him I liked the Scottish jokes. The thing that they were filming. Only the first episode of Sherlock.
I love that you grasp the importance of "that moment". The moment that you connect with the new Doctor. It's something as a fan that you hang out for each new regeneration. Hopefully you find that moment every single time.
One thing I didn't realize until seeing the episode through here is that Amy is using an English accent when she's pretending to be a policewoman. Neat little touch!
I've watched this so many times, how have I never noticed that she says that her mum puts faces on apples very shortly after she says that she doesn't have a mum? Anyway, welcome to the new era! Hope you like it :)
At the time I took it as my mom used to do it. Now I do it or my aunt does it for her. It never quite click until after a few rewatches. Very clever and so subtle
100 comments and no one has said that Young Amy is played by Karen Gillan's cousin. While it is an easy special effect these days, not all that hard 14 years ago, Matt Smith stepping through the prior Doctors and giving that advice made him very, very believable as the Doctor. I'd had doubts earlier in the episode, because there are so many rules about playing The Doctor.
I love that they never realised that when she was cast, the 2 sides of the family were estranged and it was only when they started chatting at rehearsals that they realised the truth
that feeling you were talking about at the end, that feeling of "you're not the Doctor, who are you?" is something that Moffat was accounting for when he wrote this episode "for 20 Minutes, just believe in me" is aimed as much at the audience as it is at Amy, guess how many minutes were left in the episode when he said that.
I still remember the waiting and sceptical worry leading up then finally that *moment* and sigh of relief and excitement when I realised that Matt was definitely the doctor. 💙
"Basically... run." The Tenth Doctor ended Harriet Jones' era with just six words. Steven Moffat began an era of Doctor Who with just two. Speaking of Harriet Jones, fun fact! There's an amazing parallel between Matt Smith's first episode and David Tennant's first episode. When Harriet Jones takes out the Sycorax, Ten chastises her by saying "They were leaving!" Well what does Amy say to Eleven? "They were leaving!" Well "leaving is good, but never coming back is better." What better way to demonstrate the Doctor is a new man than by having him do something fundamentally different from his predecessor. There's a great line in that scene, where in reference to the Earth, the Doctor says "I've put a lot of work into it." Steven Moffat borrowed that line from... himself lol He wrote a Doctor Who comedy sketch in the 90s called The Curse of Fatal Death that features Mr. Bean himself Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor and it is wickedly funny.
I've been watching Dr Who my entire life (i grew up in the 80s when they ran the entire Dr Who catalog on PBS) so i was used to the Dr changing actors, but when David's run ended i had to take a break. I took a year and a half break to grieve David and then to my absolute surprise i csme back to discover Matt. Matt who is now my favorite Dr. And now (in 2024) to my utter surprise David isn't even my second favorite Dr. i am so happy to be here experiencing your first watch with you. It is quite a ride.
@Pixelologist Capaldi, which is funny because he was so different to Smith that at first i didn't like him at all. It took me getting to know his Dr and then starting his run over for me to fully appreciate him.
@@RamblingRose08, your reaction to Capaldi reminds me of mine to Matt. I thought I didn’t like him (because he wasn’t David), then he announced he was leaving & I burst into tears. I had to watch his full run again to realise he WAS the Doctor, & MY doctor, right from 5/1.
The 11th Doctor and The Ponds were my first Doctor and companions and you never forget your first 😉 Series 5 is simply magical and I LOVE it! Matt arguably had the best TARDIS, sonic screwdriver, Doctor theme, stories…He was like the Dr. Seuss Doctor. Excited to see more of your reactions! You got a new subscriber 😊
+Pixelologist Honestly the Doctor doesn’t have the best taste in men. If it were up to me if it were between Rory and Jeff it’d be Rory every time. Mind Jeff isn’t in the least bad looking but I don’t see why the Doctor would imply that our dear Rory is unattractive.
The more I watch clips and reactions to this the more I realize it's one of my all time favorites. Prisoner zero is only okay as a monster of the week, but the vibe and character and music and humor and fun of everything is unbeatable.
Thank you for sharing your “moment” with us 😢 That was so special, I miss that feeling! Even in the grief of losing every doctor, it was always such a lovely feeling to pick up on the moments and the mannerisms. The little inflections and movements and speech patterns that made it feel as though I was looking through into the soul of the doctor. It’s amazing how the actors were able to do that.
The first Doctor I saw was 8, but 11 is and always will be my Doctor. Matt Smith just plays the part exactly like I believe it should be played. You've entered a golden era!
I've been watching Doctor Who since the Peter Davison era (from 81 to 84). Every time the doctor changed there were moments like that for me where I went "Oh, yeah, there he is." With one exception.of the fourteenth of whom I did not need convincing and that's all I am going to say about that). It happened faster with some than others (Peter Capaldi took about six words, while Christopher Eccleston took half an episode) but it always happened eventually.
Said it before, but next to Tom Baker from classic who, Matt Smith is my doctor, and there are so many wonderful moments ahead that I can't wait to experience vicariously through you again. Matt Smith, the youngest man to ever step into the role does such a great job of just owning this character and making it his own. So many of the things that define this doctor are his ideas. The bow-tie, the tweed jacket, all of the physicality. Where David Tennant was the charming, romantic, doctor that all the girls loved, Matt Smith is the eccentric time-wizard who inspires the youthful imagination. If the first four series are "mad cap science fiction" then series 5 is like "Science Fiction-Fantasy." There's a beautiful exchange in here where 11 says to Amy "Amelia Pond. That was a brilliant name." and Amy says "A bit fairy tale." Basically telling the audience right off how this is going to be just a little different to the rest of the show. I also think the term "soft reboot" doesn't quite fit. Certainly they have refreshed the show in this new era, with the HD transition occurring in between series, it was time for an upgrade, but the other part is that there are so many things that actually call us back to the previous series. "Basically... Run." The line you latched onto "Oh hallo!" Is said with the precise cadence of David Tennant. Showing us all the faces of the previous Doctors, and having Matt Smith step through Tennant's face. Having the blue screw driver still around and then have it break so we can get an upgraded one... All of this is continuity to the previous series, and I would dare to say that, though you can watch from Series 5, if you have been watching all this time you get so much more out of the tapestry of what this episode is doing. Also, 11th Doctor has arguably one of the greatest theme songs ever. Not just in Doctor Who, but for any fictional character ever. You just know when there's that beat of silence and those strings start playing that something amazing has just, or is about, to happen. My Doctor. Absolutely brilliant.
You know when grown ups tell you everything is going to be fine? And you think they're probably lying to you to make you feel better? Yes. Everything is going to be fine. That was my "moment".
I'm following someone on Twitter who came in as a Matt Smith fan and started with this episode and era, although was also sent back for a few context episodes (meeting the weeping angels, meeting River Song, meeting the dalek, etc.) at certain points. Has now gone back to one and is in series two. I'm enjoying the tweets; it's interesting seeing people come in at different points ("Smith & Jones" would be another fun starting point), but I'm very glad you started with Series One and Nine.
I absolutely can't wait for the journey you are about to go on with not just 11, but the entirety of Steven Moffatt's time as showrunner. From Matt Smith, to Peter Capaldi, from season 5 to season 10, some of my favorite stories and moments come from this time of the show. Get ready, because it's going to be a wild ride.
Matt Smith is the doctor I grew up with and is still one of the best doctors, in my opinion. David is the most iconic doctor i had always heard about before I started doctor who and I had watched a few of his episodes as reruns while watching season 5. David's doctor has some of the most iconic storylines, and I loved him as the doctor after I watched it from the beginning, but I think Matt will always be my doctor. However, I love all of them so much.
20:51 This actress and David Tennant co-starred in a beautiful TV Series called Broadchurch. Arthur Darvill (Rory) and other Doctor Who veterans are in it too. You’d love it!
You can see the Millennium Dome in the London skyline at the start, so the Doctor must still be in 2005 at that point, rather than 1996 as he ended up in when meeting Amelia.
The fact its ACTUALLY been 14 years since fish fingers and custard.... ahh the feels. Enjoyed your reaction and reliving this. Such an amazing episode, it will always be remembered as one of the best.
So they actually envisioned an older actor for 11 but then a 26 year-old Matt Smith turned up and they were like forget that this is better than we could have ever hoped for.
This makes a lot of sense!! The way River Song described the doctor as looking so young in the library episodes made me feel like we wouldn't see her again in the show, or she would show up with Capaldi. Having seen further into this series it's clear have much Moffat had been planning and it totally makes sense he intended an older doctor, but LOVE that he didn't let his intention prevent hiring the best person for the role.
@@CasualNerdReactions I mean the doctor only gets older with each new incarnation. The actor only dictates how old he looks to us. River wasn't refering to 10 looking young because she's used to an older looking doctor but because she's used to him being older in absolute terms.
Moffatt once said (meaning not exact words) "We had been looking for older actors and in came Matt Smith, the oldest 26 year old, you could find. He was able to portay this 900 years old, in a young body so perfect, we had to go with him"
Welcome to my favorite couple of series of Doctor Who... as a fan since a kid with Tom Baker. Some of my favorite eps, storylines and an companion by far... not just the actress, but her related storyline, though I would be lying if I hadn't googled Amy Pond Parody at some point lol. I think there is also something about how Amy Pond was introduced as a child... I don't think any companion was ever more deserving and waited so long to step through those doors for the first time. It gives nothing away to say my favorite ep has a flower motif.. tears of joy on every rewatch. really looking forward to your reaction to that
Back in "The Fires of Pompeii" (S4/E2), the arrival of the Tardis was first noted by a sybil as she was passing through the streets of Pompeii. The sybil's name was Mira. The actor playing Mira...Karen Gillan. Caitlin Blackwood is the child actor who played the young Amelia Pond; Blackwood is a cousin of Karen Gillan I don't think this is really a spoiler... Everything old is new again with a Doctor regeneration. The body changes (including weight, age, height, everything), personality changes, the likes/dislikes change, the clothing style, and yes, the Tardis redesigns itself. Mostly you notice the interior changes, but actually the outside has subtle differences, too (including very slight shifts in color). Even the sonic screwdriver changes in appearance and expands in what it can do. As far as each new Doctor adapting to the transition, that's just as unique in style and in how long it takes to get wits together. Some are quite quick, some are a little doolally for a bit. (The 6th Doctor began as rage-filled, which made him quite unpopular with Who-fans.) Umm. Notice that the 'policewoman' is wearing seamed stockings? And a really short skirt? Olivia Coleman showing up as the mum with the two littles. Another actor with a resume miles long. Was in the British "The Office" (Helena) for one episode. Was PC Doris Thatcher (the randy policewoman) in "Hot Fuzz". Did 24 episodes with David Tennant in the British "Broadchurch". Did 21 episodes in "The Crown" as Queen Elizabeth II (not her first queen role). The Crack in the Universe. It's a continuing motif for a time. At 28:34 there's a dial facing us between the 2-shot of the Doctor on the right and Amy on the left, both in profile; the dial shows the Crack.
Yay! I had no doubt you'd love this episode, probably the best new doctor introduction in the NewWho, and Smith is 100% "my" doctor. I loved Eccleston and Tennant, but Smith brought something so unique to the role, and he sells that immediately.
Though the Moffat era of Doctor Who is my personal favorite, I'll admit that when this episode first premiered, everything felt weird. The show felt different, much of that RTD feel was gone, I was still missing David as the Dr, etc, so I didn't initially enjoy it as much as I do now. I will say that by the end of this episode I was warmed up to the new Doctor especially that end sequence when hes facing down the Atraxi, I got chills from that, especially when hes fully in his outfit and says "I'm the Doctor" after walking out of the 10th's face projection.
9:30 - you missed it twice. The Doctor was talking about "something in the corner of your eye" and turning towards the CLOSED door in the hall... Amelia ran past the now open door twice. The thing about the Doctor is that each iteration is unique. The face, voice, mannerisms, everything changes... but each act has brought something to the role. We all have a favourite Doctor, and probably a least favourite, but we love the journey with all of them.
Witnessing your joy and delight and excitement and wonder watching Doctor Who for the first time brings back so many fond memories of falling in love with this silly, lovely show 🥰🥰🥰
Welcome to my favorite era of Doctor Who! I know most people’s favorite is David Tennant and I do absolutely adore him, but oddly enough I find that whenever I go back and watch parts of this show again, it’s almost always 11 and Amy Pond I return to. So I hope you love them as much as I do. Please enjoy the journey!
I’m truly enjoying watching with you. It is a great series. I got hooked on classic on our PBS station and when the new shows came out I was nervous, but was instantly hooked.
This is my fav TARDIS. It’s less sci-fi more whimsical. It has oldtimey hot cold faucets and ketchup and mustard. It has a 3 levels and a glass floor and it’s all lit up not dark green or dark blue. Fun fact Matt Smith chose the Doctors outfit. Also those fish fingers were coconut cakes
Agreed! It feels so homely and spacious, perfect mix of old and new which is exactly why 11 is my favourite doctor. Hes the only one I feel portrays the old man in a young body dynamic perfectly
It's interesting how diffrerent the "ah, hello Doctor" moment is for different people. This episode came out a few months before I was born, so for me there wasn't really that moment, but for some of my friends who started more recently, it wasn't until the next episode, and for others, it was the very start if this one.
This is a good starting point. This was my first episode after all and while not the episode that made me fall in love with the show it definetly peaked my curiosity until a later episode which made me fall in love. I mean there is a reason we wore bowties at my brothers wedding lol
@ I disagree but respect your opinion. Its a good starting off point as you really do not need to have seen the first 4 seasons at all to get into the show. It has its own continuity while still being the same show. I personally like all of Doctor Who, sure I like some less or more than others but regardless this episode is a good point to start out with if you don't want to start at the beginning of the relaunch (or god forbid the whole show)
I’ve been watching Doctor Who since 1980, so I am used to regenerations and new Doctors. I love seeing how the new cast members are introduced, and this episode is one of the best at doing so, and not just a new Doctor but also a new companion. Tom Baker/Four will always be My Doctor (I met him at a convention in 1982-wonderful man!), but in his first season, Matt Smith becomes the one I think does the best acting job as the.character-I’ll explain why at the season finale.
I was binge watching Doctor Who back in 2014 - I literally had to take a short break between David Tennant and Matt Smith because I was so attached to DT. But Matt came in and did a great job! (And I finished his era about a week before the doctor who comes after him premiered!) This is going to be fun - so many great episodes to come!
Just discovered your channel - very glad I did. Welcome to the Matt Smith era - he is amazing. My favourite Doctor, and that is saying something because I grew up watching Tom Baker (the Fourth Doctor).
To be fair to the Doctor's driving in this episode, Journey's end established that the TARDIS is built for a team of 6 pilot, so imagine attempting to operate such a vessel on your own, while it's oon fire, with at least part of the control console outright blown up, considering that, landing in Leadworth at all is an acheivement.
Third comment, haha! But I just gotta say, after having seen the free full-length reaction a few days ago and now seeing this… the editing is superb! I mean your editing is always great, but seeing both versions really makes me appreciate it all the more. As an editor myself, I can’t imagine how you keep up with it all 😅 Mad respect
I enjoyed this episode when it first aired. Matt Smith definitely brought the wonder and curiosity and light-hearted side of the Doctor. It's only half of the Doctor. Like you, was struggling to see the WHOLE Doctor in him--until he said, "I'm the Doctor. Basically, run," and I was like, oh yeah, he has the gravitas. I can't wait for you to see how all of this plays out.
S5 is when Doctor Who started for me, it's what I remember the most, probably because I was 13-15 then and basically grew up with the show, waiting for each episode to be aired, in English even though that's my second language, feels weirdly nostalgic.
The idea of the aliens broadcasting on all of the speakers is borrowed from former Doctor Who script editor, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy writer, Douglas Adams.
I always laugh a little when Amy and The Doctor have a conversation from one side of the TARDIS console to the other with the biggest glass b_tt pl_g in the universe between them. When they take off and it starts going up and down it's just too much (both figuratively and literally) and it cracks me up. 🤣
You make me tear up whatching you react. MS,PC,JW,DT and SG are all to come. look forward to seeing your reaction. Wish I could go back and record my reactions when I first watched them. 90% of them "FANTASTIC", 10% ok. You have a fantastic lourney ahead of you. From the UK BTW :)
This was a great series opener. I think people were a bit doubtful about Matt Smith because he was so young, but he really hit the ground running. His version of the Doctor is great. Yes, you do have to pay attention to all the little lines. Steven Moffat loves his complicated story arcs.
Caitlin Blackwood, who played the young Amelia Pond is the cousin of Karen Gillan. I never really cared for Christopher Eccleston, and I’ve nothing bad to say about David Tennant but, in my opinion, this is where DW starts to get really good. The Moffat/Smith era is my favorite- the writing, the story lines, the twists, are all the best. I’m looking forward to your reactions of the next couple seasons.
Speaking from experience, you absolutely could have started with this episode, no problem. Got me hooked almost immediately. I still get chills when I hear this version of the theme music. As you've probably figured out by now, this era is definitely more whimsical, which I personally love. On to the next one!
Fans dubbed the new opening as the colonoscopy opening😂. Sorry. You will forever see it now. I love the regeneration confusion. He always has that, sometimes extreme sometimes mild, but he always has some confusion post regeneration. Hence the food confusion. The little girl playing young Amelia is fantastic. This is a fantastic intro episode. My favorite line is “there have been cowboys in here. Not real cowboys (though that can happen) “😄😄😄. This is the era Doctor Who was seriously advertised in the USA. If you are watching the US version you will see an opening intro from here on out. This era was the first era for a lot of US young adults and teens.
Back before I had BBC America, I would get the Doctor Who DVD's from my library. The scene where they first meet prisoner zero disguised as the man and his dog, when the man opens his mouth and we see all those teeth..Well on the dvd from the library, the captions at that point said "snarls NOT like dog". I thought it was so funny that I took a screenshot (I still have it). But that was the only instance the caption was like that. It didn't show up on blu-rays I bought later, on BBCAmerica or anywhere else. Just the dvd's from the library
Your end of the episode outro speeches has always been amazing to watch for Doctor Who. And this outro was the best so far. Can't wait to ride this Rollercoaster with you. 11th and 12th (moffat era) is my favorite DW era so let's go
I think this is my favourite new doctor opening episode. It's So. Good. One of my favourite episodes of the whole show, not gonna lie, and I've also seen most of Classic Who as well!
Fish sticks and custard! Yeah I've been a fan now for several years. One of my best friends is one of the panelists for doctor who. He does a lot of the q&a's every year at the expo in New York and has had the pleasure of meeting several of the cast members and several of the past doctors. The whole series in itself really stretches the imagination and it's such a pleasure watching you react to it
I LOVED Eccelston and Tennant but I honestly believe Matt Smith is the best Doctor. He will not disappoint. He's an incredibly talented actor and he "gets" it totally. It's familiar and new at the same time.

Clara's Theme is the pinnacle of Murray Gold's scoring for the show. It's hauntingly beautiful. Amy's Theme comes a close second.
Truly the best new doctor opener to this day. All the odds were against them, and they blew everything out of the water.
Personally after Tennant I’d say that applies more to Capaldi than Smith, but Smith definitely had the best season arcs to me overall.
@@dylancole1910 I can definitely see that. Also, I really agree with you on the arcs thing. I absolutely loved Smith's story arcs and it was a really fun journey with him as The Doctor.
As much as I love this episode, I give the nod to Capaldi's introduction. Largely b/c I LOVE that particular set of supporting characters so much.

@@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg I'm not saying it's not cool, but people who don't want to accept the new Doctor can be pretty firm about it. ;)
It’s so brilliant how they handle regeneration. Every time I’m sad, and nervous, and excited, and I’m ready and not ready at the same time.
20:43 Oh my, is that Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman right around the same time she played Doris Thatcher in Hot Fuzz? 😁
Same. I just noticed those two lines now. It is so sad and must be a pretty strong memory.
This is my absolute favorite "new doctor" episode. It's so well done. The chemistry between the actors, and the story, and the MUSIC. So good.
Agreed, this and Capaldi's were the best!
"Today's the day you save the world."
Totally different meaning having watched The Umbrella Academy 😂
Broadcast in 2010 it really has been 14 years since fish custard 😬
I still remember the waiting and sceptical worry leading up then finally that *moment* and sigh of relief and excitement when I realised that Matt was definitely the doctor. 💙
"Basically... run."
The Tenth Doctor ended Harriet Jones' era with just six words.
Poor Harriet. Poor golden age.
Ah, well, leaves the job open for people like Harold Saxon & Roger ap Gwilliam ….
Which IS your second favorite now, out of curiosity?
@Pixelologist Capaldi, which is funny because he was so different to Smith that at first i didn't like him at all. It took me getting to know his Dr and then starting his run over for me to fully appreciate him.
@@RamblingRose08i hate Capaldis first two series. But like his final one. He just didnt work with that companion.
"Your friend. Not him - the good looking one."
+Pixelologist
Honestly the Doctor doesn’t have the best taste in men. If it were up to me if it were between Rory and Jeff it’d be Rory every time. Mind Jeff isn’t in the least bad looking but I don’t see why the Doctor would imply that our dear Rory is unattractive.
@@tinyguy9398 Oh, 100%. My wife thinks so, as well. But you have to admit it's a damn funny line 😄
+Pixelologist
Definitely, lol!!!
@@tinyguy9398 Does the doctor sense Rory is already attached?
Matt Smith was my first Doctor! I fell in love with the show after watching this episode
"The Eleventh Hour" to this day is still my very favorite series premier. So glad you enjoyed it as well.
Karen Gillan was the priestess we first see in the Doctor/Donna/Capaldi Pompei episode
DW has always been good at drawing from the actors who have played minor roles when casting the major roles.
The first Doctor I saw was 8, but 11 is and always will be my Doctor. Matt Smith just plays the part exactly like I believe it should be played. You've entered a golden era!
"im just here for the vibes" is the perfect energy to bring into season 5 and this doctor. Hell yes, you are gonna have fun
"Is this world protected"
and "Basically, run" are such great callbacks to The Christmas Invasion
That makes sense.
The Eleventh Doctor was meant to be much older. But that plan when out the window, the moment Matt Smith began his audition.
I remember there was such a “but he’s too young” fuss at the time. He proved he was NOT too young, didn’t he?
I think you're gonna really love Stephen Moffett's run on the show. Both the Matt Smith era and Peter Capaldi.
You know when grown ups tell you everything is going to be fine? And you think they're probably lying to you to make you feel better?
Yes.
Everything is going to be fine.
That was my "moment".
The best way to explain Matt’s run as the Doctor is Whimsical.
Jeje??
True. He must have time-slipped after that fly-by.
The fact its ACTUALLY been 14 years since fish fingers and custard.... ahh the feels. Enjoyed your reaction and reliving this. Such an amazing episode, it will always be remembered as one of the best.
Olivia Coleman the lady with the 2 kids British icon in the last few years would be a good Doctor
So they actually envisioned an older actor for 11 but then a 26 year-old Matt Smith turned up and they were like forget that this is better than we could have ever hoped for.
And now he's the age they could've looked for
He auditioned for John on _Sherlock_ too. They said he was more Holmes than Watson.
He was able to portay this 900 years old, in a young body so perfect, we had to go with him"
Having this on rewatch till the next, hell yeah
Caitlin Blackwood is the child actor who played the young Amelia Pond; Blackwood is a cousin of Karen Gillan
I don't think this is really a spoiler...
(The 6th Doctor began as rage-filled, which made him quite unpopular with Who-fans.)
Umm.
Finally, we got to my favorite Doctor. I have loved him since "Fish fingers and custard." So excited to join you on this journey.
The way he reassures her with 'am I people?' was the point he became the Doctor for me. He gets how anxious about being abandoned again she is
the moment doctor who went from a good show to a great one
9:30 - you missed it twice. The Doctor was talking about "something in the corner of your eye" and turning towards the CLOSED door in the hall... Amelia ran past the now open door twice.
The thing about the Doctor is that each iteration is unique. The face, voice, mannerisms, everything changes... but each act has brought something to the role. We all have a favourite Doctor, and probably a least favourite, but we love the journey with all of them.
Witnessing your joy and delight and excitement and wonder watching Doctor Who for the first time brings back so many fond memories of falling in love with this silly, lovely show 🥰🥰🥰
One of the first dramatic roles for Olivia Colman. She had done mostly comedy to this point.
Woo, on to my favourite era of the show, and favourite doctors
I’m truly enjoying watching with you. It is a great series. I got hooked on classic on our PBS station and when the new shows came out I was nervous, but was instantly hooked.
This is Karen Gillan's second episode she appeared in 😊
This is my fav TARDIS.
@ Yes I also believe 11 is the best Doctor and Amy the best companion. But the best character in Doctor who to me is River Song.
This was in fact my first doctor who episode ever as Netflix didn't have anything prior to season 5 here
There's a benefit to having 10 other actors play the role - there's so much to pull from to make him seem consistent yet new.
Going to be honest my re-introduction to Doctor Who (after the 70s and 80s version) was Matt Smith. I honestly season 5 was a brilliant intro.
Loved Moff's run. Had issues with a lot of the previous era, but it all just clicked for me from here on.
Same. This is where peak Doctor Who begins, for me.
I was a huge fan of season 5 - I think it was a flawless season. After that though, I feel like Moffat quickly ran out of steam (Imo obviously).
I remember watching this with my dad when it aired. Karen Gillan really made an impression.
The idea of the aliens broadcasting on all of the speakers is borrowed from former Doctor Who script editor, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy writer, Douglas Adams.
To this day, this is still my favorite season of Dr. Who.
I always laugh a little when Amy and The Doctor have a conversation from one side of the TARDIS console to the other with the biggest glass b_tt pl_g in the universe between them. When they take off and it starts going up and down it's just too much (both figuratively and literally) and it cracks me up. 🤣
The Eleventh Doctor is my all time favorite Doctor
The true start to "my doctor"''s era. Can't wait
you never forget your 1st Doctor (mine is 4th)
@@AddSerious oh my first was 9. But my answer is 11 regardless
My favourite season opener and introduction to a new Doctor to date. Just brilliant.
Not a massive Eleven fan but Series 5 is one of the very best.
11th and 12th (moffat era) is my favorite DW era so let's go
This doctor's theme is my absolute favorite! 5/4 time so it's just that little bit awkward, just like Matt Smith.
Yay! Matt Smith and the Pond Era! I am so excited for you to enter this journey! It was the best and most beloved for me! 😊❤

Fingers… fish fingers.
The strongest start we could get to series 5. Such a banger.
Their is a Doctor Who video where everyone invovled in the show sing, I'll Walk 500 miles. You should react to it.
I'm now a subscriber.
Series 5 is my favorite overall series - looking forward to your journey watching it!
I LOVED Eccelston and Tennant but I honestly believe Matt Smith is the best Doctor. He will not disappoint. He's an incredibly talented actor and he "gets" it totally. It's familiar and new at the same time.
