Especially if you consider a later episode that reveals that Dalek vocabulary is very limited... which implies Davros programmed "would you care for some tea" into their vocabulary alongside "exterminate" and "bugger"
So the "I am your soldier" thing is presumably a nod to a 2nd Doctor story, where the Daleks were similarly acting helpful, only the line there was "I am your servant".
Possibly light spoilers, but more on something that didn’t end up happening rather than did. These new Daleks were intended to be fleshed out over time, as the different colours were different ranks, and they had unique personalities and voices. The negative response to the design led to this never being fully fulfilled.
When I watched 5x13 (I don't think I kept this in my edit) I wondered if the black fossilized Dalek was a direct result of the backlash to the brightly colored Daleks.
Journaling during Doctor Who. You have reached a new level. I truly wish I had started my journal earlier. There is the section for plot strands, sure. Then a separate section to keep track of the various aliens and especially those who have somehow influenced the evolution or development of earth/mankind. And a section for catchphrases - when they debut and maybe tick them as they repeat. And I love a theme - so when I hear an episode with a particularly good tune, theme, etc I will note it and go find out if the piece has a name. (Vale Decem was covered by the Lockdown choir) Also Doomsday, All the Strange Creatures, and I am the Doctor which was previously called Next Stop Everywhere.
Bill Paterson, the actor who plays Bracewell is the narrator on The Repair Shop, a wonderful UK program about craftspeople restoring family heirlooms for folks. All the episodes are on RUclips. Would highly recommend. Very cozy.

The Power Ranger Daleks were designed to be eye-height with Karen Gillan, since the old ones were a lot shorter and the production team thought they just looked silly next to her.
I remember that the reason they looked so hunchbacked was because they were going to be weapons and other various devices that would come out from the back
@ In the wake of this episode, Doctor Who Magazine reported on their letters page that the mail was running a ratio of 1000:1 against. That's close enough for a first approximation.
The bright ones are interesting. Seems accurate that with an upgrade they would consider any earlier ones inferior. But the classics have are a long standing nemesis.
Like the new TARDIS shell, the colourful new Daleks are inspired by the Peter Cushing movies, adapting the orginal two Dalek stories (if you can find them and have a gap in your schedule, they're definitely worth a watch) the increased height is also because they were scaled around the height of Matt Smith, whereas the Gold Daleks were desinged to scale around Billie Piper, since in Dalek she would share the most screen time with it.
@@alextrill1746 yes really. My kids loved them because they were colourful and chunky and had deep growly voices, I liked them because they finally felt tank-y.
Moffat cleverly introduces the Daleks back into the show from where they left off, with the progenitor device, which is a fascinating addition to the Daleks lore. It’s also fun to see the Daleks lurking and scheming around in WW2 London when you would expect them to be on the side of the Nazis. The episode also has very clever parallels to the Classic who story “The Power Of The Daleks.” The Introduction of the Paradigm Daleks is also magnificent imo, I love how it’s presented as a victorious and triumphant moment for the Dalek race. An entirely new race of Daleks. I will also admit that the paradigm Daleks are my all time favourite design. The colour caste system makes perfect sense for a race of fascist, xenophobes. Their design also feels far more powerful and intimidating to me which is why I love them so much. The also have lots of Easter eggs to past Dalek designs. Never understood the hate they get. Great reaction as always. Can’t wait for more. Keep calm and Carry on, Living The Geek live 🤓😎…xx
I saw a documentary about London during WWII. Families would send their children away to places set up for them out away from London. They also had to blacken their windows so no light shone through but what I think was really interesting is that those blimps aren't blimps. They were barrage balloons. There were hundreds of them set up in London and the planes would have to fly higher to avoid them. If they hit them, the cables would make the planes crash. It was an ingenious move. Pilots couldn't see any targets due to the blackout and if they flew too low the balloons would take them out. I like the fact that this episode included them. 🙂
Great ep , nicely edited, you probably know this the voice of all the Daleks and Cybermen is Nicholas Briggs using a ring modulator,. And he his also executive producer on the Big Finish audio books doctor who stories
my grandmother who was born and raised in england brought me up on jammie dodgers in america. they are soo good! shortbread cookie with jam in the midde yummy
"Win the War" what i love about this line is that from a british point of view thats your goal und we should routing for them, but said by a Dalek and it oozes dread.
I’m so glad you are taking some notes! Yes things with Steven midday have a huge over arching story. Events out of order. People meeting in the last and then the future. I’m so excited to see your reactions for the next seasons. 😁
GO GO POWER RANGERS! Let’s be honest. Those different colour dalek were done for 1 reason. Merchandise. The red dalek was essentially on 95% of merchandise in 2010 & 2011 and it was so kids (aka me) would want all 5 colours.
Thanks for a great reaction to a very good episode. Everything in this episode was nice except for the Daleks themself. But a very good supporting cast and a very nice way to get to know both Amy and the 11th Doctor even more.
Nearly all the adult fans preferred the older Dalek designs. Not sure about the kids but I know some liked them. I have a model of the white Dalek my husband brought back from the UK business trip shortly after this season. It’s lost its plunger. I think my grandkids attached it to something else. A bit of Sid from Toy Story I guess.
This could have been an interesting story, and had it been made as a 2 parter, more time could have been spent on a back story for the Daleks and Bracewell (potentially in flashbacks) showing how Bracewell conceived and built the “Ironsides,” unaware that he was being helped and manipulated by the Daleks to eventually trap the Doctor. This, I think, would have been better than just throwing the audience into the story about a scientist who has already built his “Ironside machines,” before the Doctor arrives in London. Having this story as a 2 parter would have meant losing another single episode somewhere else in the season, but I would have rather lost, say, “The Vampires of Venice,” from production to have helped flesh out this more intriguing idea that the writer, Mark Gatiss, had come up with. Also, think more could have been spoken about (and shown how) the Spitfires and Hurricanes could fly in space. As it is, just letting the audience see that they’re up there (in a gravity bubble) doesn’t really explain about how the technology came into being, and how, at the end of the story, more should have been made of the Doctor telling Churchill to destroy the planes for fear of the UK having space travel two decades before they or anyone else had it! The all new coloured Dalek Tubbies was a bad idea that shouldn’t have made it past the first draft of the script (let alone into actual production) and only goes to shown that if a design of 50 years ain’t broke, then it don’t need fixing! For me, the best thing in the episode is Matt Smith’s fury as the Doctor, goading the Dalek into revealing itself by continually thumping its outer shell in a desperate attempt to convince Amy, Churchill and everyone else in that room that their “Ironsides” are the most dangerous being in the universe! Overall an interesting story premise that, with more time and an extra episode added, could have made a very fine 2 part Dalek story (making up for the lacklustre “Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks.” story from Season 4).
Speaking as a rational Earthling who understands how small we are, if the chance to remove the threat of the Daleks to the universe VS us... It should be a good day for the universe. I hated the tall, brightly colored Daleks. Just because Karen is taller than a real Dalek, no need to redesign...
"I don't know. I prefer the original bronze..." I do think it's an attractive color, though being a fan of classic Who long before new Who existed, I tend to think of the Daleks in varying shades of grey. These Daleks are a bit too bright and plastic-y, but I don't have a huge problem with them. Then again, I've never been the biggest fan of Daleks. I thought they worked well in the original appearance, but I don't buy plunger-wielding pepper pots of their design as galactic-level enemies. I was always more of a Cyberman kind of guy, though I don't much care for their modern iterations.
Possibly my least favourite episode of Nu Who (but just my personal opinion and all other opinions are perfectly valid 🙂). The Daleks scared the bejeebers out of me as a kid, because unlike all the other monsters they didn't look like people in costumes. That was part of the brilliance of their design. But make them big - lets even say "human-sized" - and oh ... they're just people in costumes. 🙂
In Victory of the Daleks, the Ood defeat the Daleks in a cybernetic war against the fishing industry. Oh and the Doctor regenerates back into Mary Harwell, the inventor
Winston Churchill, Spitfires, Jammy Dodgers and a Dalek serving tea, you can't get much more British than THAT!
"Would you care for some tea?" one of my favourite Dalek quotes
And a nice call back to Power of the Daleks.
@MuchWhittering ohh nice tbh haven't watched a huge amount of classic who, Sylvester McCoy being my first Doctor.
Especially if you consider a later episode that reveals that Dalek vocabulary is very limited... which implies Davros programmed "would you care for some tea" into their vocabulary alongside "exterminate" and "bugger"
I also enjoy "daleks do not have friends" and "daleks do not store stuff" from Eve of the Daleks
The Doctor threatening the Daleks with a Jammy Dodger is a classic DW moment!
The voice of Danny Boy is Mark Gatiss, who wrote this episode. He was also Dr Lazarus in ‘the Lazarus Experiment’ with Tennant.
I love Matt because like Tennet, he teeters between this child like spirit and this old, jaded being with just an expression. 😊
"They are like the new iPhone" lmao
A lot of fans didn’t really like the colourful daleks, but the kids who got those toys loved them 😅
The Jammie Dodger bit brings to mind the time the 4th Doctor threaten to kill someone with a Jelly Baby, eating it as well, when his bluff was called.
So the "I am your soldier" thing is presumably a nod to a 2nd Doctor story, where the Daleks were similarly acting helpful, only the line there was "I am your servant".
Danny boy was played by mark gatiss who wrote this and also played Richard Lazarus in the Lazarus experiment
And the best ever Mycroft in “Sherlock Holmes” 😊
Possibly light spoilers, but more on something that didn’t end up happening rather than did.
These new Daleks were intended to be fleshed out over time, as the different colours were different ranks, and they had unique personalities and voices.
The negative response to the design led to this never being fully fulfilled.

I thought it was to Matt Smith's height? The Time War Daleks were made to target Rose's height though
Everything should be Karen-sized.
Nah. It was done for merchandise reasons 😅

I'm a little sick of the gold Daleks by this point. They're due for a redesign
The idea of 'old bronze daleks' is an invention of the Nu Who fandom.
The BBC auctioned off the Red Paradigm Dalek a few yrs back. A RUclipsr called Some Boi Online got it and has been restoring it.
My children call the 11th Doctor "the Cookie Doctor" 😁
This was always my favourite NewWho series and seeing somebody watch it for the first time is delightful!
Ah yes, the Power Ranger Daleks. Not the most popular of redesigns.
Which is a shame, because they were honestly pretty awesome.
