I also enjoy the real excitement conveyed about the equipment. I had to smile at her happiness. The ability to record on vinyl so far exceeds the playback technology , that it seems better equipment will endlessly extract more sound than before from any old record.

Melinda, you have done it right. Good equipment with a pleasing sound, wonderful turn table and cartridge, then you concentrated on outstanding speakers and a pair of premium subs! RELs are quick and accurate! Well done! I just updated my sub from an old 8" Kenwood to a 12" ELAC Varro. No duels yet, but like you said the sub upgrade really expands the sound stage! Congrats again on the RELs!

I also use dual subwoofers in my system. It does make a difference in the sound! You touched on an important point of making the subwoofers work with your system. It’s so important to tune the subwoofers with the speakers. You don’t want to over power the main speakers. You barely want to hear the subwoofers. I’m glad you’re getting enjoyment out of your equipment!

that only means that either your amplifier isn´t good or the speakers you´re using, for having two sunwoofers it tells a lot about one´s sytem, some years ago i had a A-656MKII also from pioneer and conected to it some SB-f3 from technics 79 edition, the best ones, it gives a very good sound with any 70´s integrated amplifier or stereo receiver but with this 92 pioneer ,because of it´s assembled type it does power this great speakers ,sb-f3 that are direct listening type or you have to install them directelly to your main position of listening ,it came with a chromed tripod to regulate it´s position, i think they called it linear phase speakers but having a set of cheap CS-997 i conected them and using both sets at the same time it increased a lot the bass ,it as medium and high´s but lefting out a lot of frequencies but with the SB-F3 it revealed a very high quality with this amplifier ftrom their reference series, this with a 80´s PL-707 also pioneer, using also a SG-9500 equalizer that i only installed it because in 93 i started to buy more cds and for the first time i felt i needed a equalizer ,i had in on a 76 Pioneer catalog top end components given to me by my father but i never used it because it felt perfect without it, this using some spec.-1 and 2 and some HPM-150 that a year later i bought some good JBL speakers and using the four speakers at the same time, it flt perfect and with power enough to fill a room and be heard 3 houses next to mine,i was using first a PL-530 and after i started using a PLC-590 turntable from the 20 series which is very good and today i don´t know how many thousands of €´s it would cost to match it´s quality

First.. love the tree. Second… that Miles Davis shirt is killer. Congrats on the Rel subs. Definitely a great fit and move. One thing I found when adding subs to my system besides the reinforcement of the lower bass frequencies is the midrange was enhanced and solidified. Especially with vocals. As always, sit back and enjoy. May you, Philip and your daughter have a wonderful and blessed Christmas Day.

Congratulations on your upgrades! I'm in the process of doing the same with my equipment. I've upgraded my amp and phono cartridge, and still deciding on which speakers to purchase. The one thing about stereo equipment is that no matter what changes you make, there is always something better out there. Of course you have to live within your own budget, but the temptation for something even better never stops. It's a never ending pursuit for the ultimate setup. Great choice on the REL's.

Congratulations on the acquisition of two really nice subwoofers. 👍👍👍 I'd place this video in your top ten very best videos to date. ❤ As I've said before, I have a 1978 vintage SONY system at 85 Watts per channel with NHT Classic Three Bookshelf Speakers on stands (couldn't fit my vintage Klipsh Heresy Speakers in my bedroom listening space). The very last component I added to my system was an SVS SB-1000 Subwoofer. When I first received the subwoofer, it wasn't readily apparent on how to hook it up to my vintage system. It doesn't have the same jacks that a modern system has. Most people would have given up, but I did some creative wiring by wiring into the other speaker wires for the NHT's. It worked! 😻For a very long time, I've recommended that people add at least one subwoofer to their system to round out the low end response. Most rock music won't fall below around 50 Hz, but if you listen to all kinds of music like you and I do, then it's good to go further down on the low end. Have you tested you sub's with pipe organ music? The pipe organ reaches down on the low end below 50 Hz, so you're good to go to get that rich bass you deserve to hear. I love your overall philosophy about stereo components and enjoying what you have. 💖Each sound reproduction device has its own merits (even a suit case turntable) and focusing on the music is the key to everything more than anything else. I hope you continue to enjoy your music with your REL's. 🎸🎸🎻🎷🎺🥁🎹🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Good morning! I'm not surprised that you found a way to make your equipment work together. I would have no idea how to do that but I'm glad you figured it out. I haven't listened to pipe organ music yet but I have listened to a lot of classical and jazz. The subs have been wonderful. Thank you for the kind words regarding the video. It is important to be happy with what we have. I started out with very basic, modest equipment but I had that same excitement and enjoyed the music as much back then as I do today. I will admit that the music sounds so much better today but I appreciate the process more because I started out with very little. Thank you! Christmas is upon us. Have a blessed holiday. ♥️🎄

When I was in high school back in the '80's, I took an electronics class and later in college I had an electrical engineering class among many other technical courses. I love electronics and as you know music. Love working on audio equipment and building electronic devices when I have time. There are people in the vinyl community who talk about their audio gear like it's a badge of honor. One guy claims his turntable cost $125K.😲 You can recreate how people listened to music in the '50's, '60's, and '70's with a suit case turntable. I played my vinyl on one as a child and loved it. I love the musical sounds of different eras. You're welcome and thank you for the Christmas wishes. I wish both you and your family a very Merry Christmas. ✝ I'll see you on the flip side and look forward to hearing about your Christmas vinyl gifts.👍💖🎸😎 @@MelindaMurphy

Congratulations on your choice of Sub Woofers Melissa. Stereo pairs are the way to go if possible. I have two REL's also they are Apex Subs! its what REL do and its all they do. I actually use their utterly amazing wireless transmitters on both, so no wires. Yours are placed near your equipment so not really a cable issue. REL's are are actually manufactured down the road from me in beautiful Wales UK. What I love about these subs us the way they integrate the allow the main speakers to really relax and express themselves, particularly the way that manifests itself around the mids to highs. The Bass is actually really obviously textured but fast, tight and tuneful. I Always get asked "are the subs on as I can't hear them" I say that's exactly how it should be, if you can locate them, they are wrongly set up. Visitors are amazed when I switch them off. The effect they have on sound-stage and imaging of the main speakers is profound. Your system is progressing in a balanced synergistic way and I look forward to hearing about your next adventure, as good as your Emotivas are, your system may now be evolving beyond their strengths but that's for another day. BTW put your UHQR Steely Dan Aja on the difference is staggering with the REL's. Thank you for your videos, I love your real world approach and may I wish you and your loved ones a very happy Christmas filled with great times and great music, as we all know music is life..❤

Wow! My other opinion could have been interpreted differently as one would think to understand, because I wanted to keep my response short, as I love separated pre amps & amps! I was asking about reason for separate amp & pre amp, because many people have many reasons for doing that. Your stereo gives you the capability to switch out your transistor pre amp for a separate tube pre amp for your transistor amp is a fantastic thing, because you can be able to switch out the transistor pre amp for a tube pre amp, to go with your transistor amp. A tube pre amp runs cool & tubes last many many years. Tubes sound magical! Many people that like turntables, also like tube pre amps, both are analog. many people who like digital cd players like transistor digital cds. A tube pre amp isnt as clear as a transitor pre amp, just like records arent as clear as cds, but people have their own opinions. But a really really good tube pre amp is usually very expensive, so to be as good as a transistor pre amp., the same goes for a turntable usually has to be much more expensive than a cd player to beat a cd player. Some people have different opinions about the pros & cons of subwoofers. Hope I am helpful!

I am definitely curious about tube preamps. I will be taking a financial break for a while but at some point may look into tubes. Thank you and take care.

Eventually I wanna upgrade and experience what you are hearing. I wish I could teleport and have a listening sesh with you.! And I still have to listen to your favorite album. Everyone on both sides is pleased with the purchase and results (manufacturers and the consumer) and seemingly not bothered by the cost or expense, so all is well in the world. ;)
You gotta realize that it's INCREDIBLY difficult to be truly well-informed and sure that you are choosing the absolute best speakers, subwoofers, and electronics when there is only so much time available to dedicate to investigating and demo'ing every possible offering that's available these days.
There is so much marketing hype and "influencer/reviewer" noise about audio products these days (and just as much snake oil as there ever was) that it's a real challenge to filter all of that extraneous and often ill-informed noise and actually land on truly good equipment within your particular budget, listening room conditions/limitations, and use case scenario.
Aesthetics/Cosmetics are also a significant consideration for most, so a fair bit of otherwise excellent and/or superior kit in regards to pure performance and SQ will simply be eliminated from the potential list, and people are often skewed by "looks" at least as much as potential performance metrics.
Beauty and SQ are in the eyes & ears of the beholder.

      @fts81
I agree for the most part, except in regards to "subwoofer tuning" being an art.
Like most things, there is a particular PROCESS or step-by-step procedure that can be learned and easily utilized or implemented to achieve the best possible integration of your subwoofer(s) to your main loudspeakers and the room in relation to your main listening position.
The single largest variable is the room itself, as its properties alone pretty much dominate the response at your listening position and the accuracy of reproduction of the subwoofer frequencies and all frequencies below the Schroeder Frequency of the given space.
It's the same as the particular "process" or steps you learned and most likely use in a wash/rinse/repeat manner every day in your job or profession. And, those learned techniques and processes also apply the creation of art as well.
Unfortunately, there are currently very few straightforward, concise, simple, and well-known/ubiquitous tutortials available that demonstrate these processes and techniques for the home HiFi enthusiast and audiophile, whether you are just using your two ears and some test tones, or basic to very sophisticated measurement gear.
You can use completely FREE software (Room EQ Wizard, Open Sound Meter, JL Audio TüN v4.x, and smartphone signal generator apps) with a basic laptop and a very inexpensive USB measurement mic, or a cheap 2-channel USB audio recording interface and XLR measurement mic, to see what is happening in the room. Or just use your very capable ears.
While it is a completely different environment, the best demos and examples of these processes are done by experienced live sound and FOH engineers and the manufacturers of the respective pro audio equipment.

Melissa, one of the important things about having two subwoofers is that, together, they can smooth out the sound and help fill in the sonic gaps that a single subwoofer might present. Why two instead of just one? Well, low frequency sounds are very long-a 30hz wavelength is 38 feet long! Such long waves have dips and peaks-imagine waves on a lake or a river, but even longer. Room reflections can cause the problem of waves building up additively, making sound at certain frequencies too loud, or they can partly cancel other frequencies, making them too quiet. With a single subwoofer those problems can be noticeable, but when you have two of them they tend to reduce those problems because the long waves can bounce around in different areas and directions. The result of having two subs is what you described your system as sounding like, namely very smooth sound that fills the room and sounds great from more than one location. (By the way, it is also true for home theater systems, where having two (or more!) subwoofers is important.)

Thank you for this video, especially the piece about enjoying what we have. It's too easy to get trapped in the upgrade hamster wheel, and we forget to listen to the music and working on how our speakers are placed in the room (super important and can lift most systems to new heights). Thank you also for sharing about the subwoofer, and their importance of the overall sound. Since it's possible to also limit what we send to the main speakers, it helps them perform better as they are far less stressed. I am also on my journey, which has been interrupted a few times over the years, mostly moving to parts of the world that have different power conditions. So I'm on my fifth new start-over system, and it's so much fun to just get up and running again. I have a Rega turntable, PS Audio Sprout Amp, and a pair of GR Research XLS Encore speakers that I'm putting veneer on. Can't wait to get them up and running again, but really am thinking a lot about subwoofers. My room is pretty small, only about 15x30 feet, a multi-function room, so no S-510s for me. Maybe a KEF. We shall see. Great video!

Congratulations Melinda! You made a very well thought out decision and one you will enjoy because of the time and research you put into it. I've been using 2 Rel subs in my system for the past 20 years. The older models had a very nice x-over selection. I see yours have a variable level selection so fine tuning exactly what the x-over point with the mains is becomes a little harder. As you said correctly, the volume level of the subs should be such that you don't notice where the bass is coming from, at least that should be the goal. 65hz may even be too high, but listen and be aware that an even lower x-over point could be even better. The Hi-level connection is really the reason why these subs work so well in Audiophile systems. A lot of Audiophiles connect subs to their receivers low level inputs and don't realize they are "digitizing the signal" within the receiver in order to blend the sub(s) with the mains. Anyway, glad to see you made a very wise choice and I think this is going to make your system really sing.

Hi Melinda, Merry Christmas to you and your family. Congrats on the Subwoofers. My present Stereo system is all Separate Components, All Technics Vintage equipment, around 35 years old, but works perfect and never had any issues with them at all. And I paired that with a pair of Technics 3 way Speakers with a 12 inch woofer and a 5 inch Midrange and a 2 inch Tweeter and they sound fantastic. Bought them new in 1989 and still very happy with them. My stereo at the moment is in a Bedroom so I don't need much power. Someday I would like to put my Stereo equipment in the Family Room which is a very large 45 X 14 foot room but the lighting is very poor down there so have to work on imporving that before I can even think of moving the stereo downstairs. But, take care and stay well and warm.

These speakers seem to be very good. They are praised by almost everyone on RUclips and they look awesome too. I love the different finish options, I never tried them in person, but I'm afraid that if I do, I will have to buy a pair and they're not exactly cheap lol.
I currently have jbl 4312 but I also have dual concentric speakers too. They're Tannoy Berkeley, but I like them so far.
I like to have at least 2 set of speakers depending on what I'm listening to.
Since I'm into electronics (I'm a certified technician) and I do a lot of DIY, and my next project will likely be a phono Pre-amp with both mm/mc inputs.
I like the idea of having 2 symmetrical subwoofers, I don't need them with the speakers I have, but these REL look good as well, and I'm sure your setup sounds pretty good. These are all very high quality equipment. There's nothing more enjoyable than trying your new setup and going to your entire collection and discovering something you never heard before on a record you know very well. Aesthetics is a part of high-end audio, or high-end anything! Those RELs are gorgeous! Congratulations! And good choice!
I finally pulled the trigger on my own upgrades, but they won't arrive until after Christmas. I ordered a pair of Revel Salon 2 speakers. That's been my dream for many years. They are replacing my B&W 804 speakers I bought in about 1998. I think my new speakers will be the best I ever had and likely ever will have.
Next I want to upgrade my amp and my CD player. Currently I have an Aragon 8008 BB amp and a Sony 999es CD/DVD/SACD player, but before I had an Ayre C5XEmp player that unfortunately I had to sell during bad times. I want to upgrade the amp to a Pass Labs 350.8. I already have a Pass XP20 preamp. And I want to upgrade my Rega P1 to a Gold Note Pianosa.

Wow Awesome Add! I would really like to hear my favorite, Pink Floyds "Wish You Were Here" on that system, also, don't be afraid to try a little RUSH, songs like "Spirit of Radio" or "Tom Sawyer" were recorded for great systems like yours, thank you for sharing, Merry Christmas.

I’m not a “gear head”, I just wanted to compliment your sweatshirt. For someone known as the “Prince of Darkness”, your sweatshirt is bright and vibrant! Lol
    Congrats on your new setup.
The Time Out album reminds me of something I noticed on the Beatles’ American Hard Day’s Night soundtrack. The George Martin arrangement of the title track has always reminded me of “Take Five”. It has the same (or similar) drum and sax arrangement and feel.

Congratulations Melinda. You’d already assembled a very nice nice killer system and I feel these RELs are the icing on the cake. You can relax an enjoy your music for a long time to come. My system may be a little more humble, consisting of a Rega P3-2000 with Nagaoka MP200 cartridge, Quad Artera Pre preamp and Artera Stereo power amp, running into Harbeth M30.2//40 and ageing B&W ASW100 subwoofer. Digital player is an OPPO UDP-205 used as disc player and streaming via Roon. Merry Christmas from Melbourne, Australia 🎄

Great video. Congratulations on your new acquisition. You made the right decision at the correct time during your upgrade process. Subwoofers should be added after you are satisfied and happy with the rest of your system. REL makes a great sub and going stereo was a wise decision. I have an HSU ULS15 and love it. By the way, nice sweatshirt. Enjoy.

Enjoyed this posting, Melinda. I don't have room for subwoofers and don't really value much bass. But, again, I don't have a vast listening room to fill. I did consider a stand mount speaker upgrade earlier this year (after 25 years) but finances will not allow this... yet. The EAR Yoshino tube phono stage (bought about 15 years ago) had a big uplift in my system though. Before I forget; Merry Christmas!

I'm glad you are enjoying what you have and more importantly making good decisions for yourself. Music always sounds better when the bills are paid. That's how I feel anyway. 😃 I hope your upgrade comes soon. Merry Christmas! 🎄🤗♥️

I don't care for the word "accurate" with audio recordings! All recording's are an "illusion" , so it's subjective! The point is to get the audio worked on enough to make it sound like the subject of the sound is in the room with you! So really no recording is "accurate" because it's been modified so much before it reaches your ears! Have a Merry Christmas!😊

Life-like may be a better word. The music definitely sounds more natural and life-like. ♥️ Thank you and Merry Christmas! ♥️🎄

❤ those subs! If there is a quake in Kentucky, I’ll think it’s your living room. 😂. Fantastic purchase, Melinda. Love the setup & thank you for allowing us into your home to see your stereo tech.
To answer your question on what my favourite piece in my setup (it’s retro focused) HAS to be my twin set of Pioneer CDJ800s. I said to an ex and my bestie that my holy grail is to get a set of DJ decks. That was in 1999. And about two years ago I saw a set for £170. I thought “Darren? This will be the only chance in your 56 years to get them”. Melinda? It was like the devil and god going 12 rounds in a boxing ring. I then thought the clichéd YOLO..and did it! These cd players sound totally amaze! The detail! Hearing things I never heard before in recordings I thought I heard everything before my ears deteriorated over the years.
I might as well give you an overview of what else is in the setup. So here goes.
Wharfedale Xarus 5000 floorstanders which weigh a metric ton (slight exaggeration) I got for free. A Sony SACD/DVD player circa 2001 for £109 off eBay. A Sony component record deck circa 2001 which needs a phono pre amp. A full Sony components mini system in silver. Tuner, amp, CD player with cd text. And a drawer loading cassette deck. There is a separate mini disc component that goes with it all but I don’t have it. I’ve always wanted minidisc. My ex has an Aiwa portable minidisc recorder. Also circa 2001. And the sound is incredible.
One more thing. Sorry every time I reply to your vids it becomes a sonnet 😂. Well two things actually. First, you mentioned synths on the Fagan record. Can I recommend Four albums to try on those sassy subs? First two are by Jean Michel Jarre called Oxygene and Equinoxe. The third is by Vangelis and is called ‘Spiral’. And last - for that cool 80s sound - Propaganda- A Secret Wish. I bet that would be like birdsong to your ears.
Second, look on the What HiFi site. There is a section where it says “albums / tracks/ etc to test out your system / dynamics/etc”. I PROMISE you that their recommendations are on point.
Ok, and very last. Happy Christmas and new year to you all from a very cold and wet east of England, UK. Thank you for your videos and your passion for music. Please stay safe.

YOLO is a great phrase for a reason - it's true! I'm glad you were able to enjoy the great music. Unfortunately, getting older does mean we can't hear as well.
You have great equipment. Congrats. I will look into your suggestions. I am familiar with Oxygen but not the others.
Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄 Happy New Year.

WOW - What a setup! Those Christmas records must sound awesome! OK Melinda, are you ready? These are 10 LPs you must have in your collection:
    1. I Robot - The Alan Parsons Project (1977)
    2. Never For Ever - Kate Bush (1980)
    3. Trick Of A Tail - Genesis (1976)
    4. First Rays Of The New Rising Sun - Jimi Hendrix (1995)
    5. Meddle - Pink Floyd (1971)
    6. Burn - Deep Purple (1974)
    7. Birds Of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra (1973)
    8. Ghost In The Machine - The Police (1982)
    9. Together (Original Soundtrack) - Burt Bacharach (1979)
    10. Innervisions - Stevie Wonder (1973)
These records maximize SubWoofer Bass with the addition of clarity mixed by respected producers - chances are a lot of these are already in your collection - if so give 'em a spin to bring in the New Year! Remember ANYTHING under 50 HZ be it a vocal, kick drum, cello or Bass Guitar those subs are gonna rock your Music Room which is like a small theatre - Merry Christmas Melinda to you and Family - I enjoyed every minute of your weekly videos this past year!❤🎄

Yeah these records should be in everyone's collection, I love all of them but I have to replace a couple because I played them so much that they're used now. I don't know if I will try to find originals ones or re issues. I often prefer the originals because they tend to have a lot of bass and a less clinical sound than the re issues, but it's my personal taste. Yours can be different.

I just ran across your channel Melinda. Thank you so much for being a female that is into audio! It doesn't matter how expensive your system is, what matters is the pleasure you get from it. I purchased an SVS sub for my second system. It integrated perfectly, I thought I would have to do a lot of adjusting but it sounded great when first plugging it in. The system looks great, enjoy it! I look forward to future videos.
