Thank you so much for making this video. You are an amazing instructor when it comes to learning about Turntables. My Dad recently passed and left me about 400 vinyl from 1962-1986. Liquid gold.
You are blessed. Many hours of memories and love await you. I have a similar journey to embark with several boxes of 1935 to 1950 Jazz and Classical from my Dad. 😊♥️
This is one of the most complete and helpful tutorials I have found on this topic. I have been listening to vinyl for 40+ years and this is the first time I have actually seen something that explains all these things in plain English. I love the fact that you’re doing this in the corner of your workshop dedicated to brewing beer. These are all signs of a true renaissance man in this day and age. Thanks for making my life 2% happier!
Thank you for taking the time to teach the intricacies of turntable cartridge alignment and tonearm setup in such great detail. Your patience and expertise made the learning process not only enlightening but truly enjoyable. There is no better video on the subject than this one.
I've had my Technics SL B21 since the mid 80's. After a long hiatus I am bringing my sound system out of retirement, as I am transitioning into retirement myself. I'd like to echo the sentiments of others in saying, this is the best explanation I've seen to demystifying the setting of those dials, to get the tracking right. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial. Best I've found to date on RUclips. Well, it'll remain the best because there's no need to look elsewhere now. I've DJ'ed (80's - to early noughties) and had a couple of SL1210 MK2's and my set up throughout the decades was a best guess. Info like this just wasn't readily available back in the day. I since sold my decks (5 - 6 years ago) but because I still have a shed load of vinyl I want to sell on, I need to invest in a sturdy, quality piece of kit in order to test my records before I flog them. I came here for reviews and stumbled across this video and have got to say, that even with my own 30+ years of vinyl/audio experience, this is the best piece of audiophile education I've ever received. You have a talent for this kind of thing, Sir. Thank you!
I'm in a similar situation and couldn't find the coin for a new pair of Technics, they're pricey. I did research and settled on a pair of Pioneer PLX 1000s with the Ortophon Club mkIIs and I'm beyond happy with my purchase. Ive dusted off all my old vinyl and my collection is growing every week. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I just bought my first turntable. I bought a Fluance RT85. I had to make changes to everything just a bit in most cases, but the first record I put on had wonderful imaging and sound without a hint of distortion. I was able to follow your guide easily and accurately. Thank you for helping take the fear out of setting up my first turntable! It was fun and sounds AMAZING!

I want to know why these under-arm counterweights are supposed to be better by keeping the centre of mass below the arm? they are sold as 'upgrades' on ebay.
@Cornelius Agrippa I am not sure what this "upgrade" is, so I am skeptical. I have had great results with turntables as they come from manufacture by just checking the alignment and tracking force, etc. In my opinion, I don't need to sink money into more upgrades when my system sings beautifully as it is.
Wow! Very easy to understand. I can’t wait to calibrate my vintage turntable. It wasn’t working for the longest time. There was no sound coming from the turntable. I didn’t know if the problem was with the cartridge or the turntable itself. After checking continuity and wiring I still had no clue what was wrong. I decided to unplug the RCA cables from my preamp and plug in to a spare receiver and it worked. My problem was the phono input on my preamp. Most of my equipment is from the 1980’s and is still working with some minor fixes. I’m now a new subscriber. Thanks again!
I watched two other videos and read my instruction manual and it wasn't till i watched this i figured out what i was doing wrong. Best tutorial ever! Thanks my man!
Never, ever, ever solder the wires to anything on the business end of the tonearm. Excellent tutorial! How and why with detailed explanations of cause and effect in easy to understand instructions. You are a phonograph guru.
Finally, a video that explains all of this, I have this same turntable and I think it was a open box or a returned item. I had it for a while and it didn't seem quite right, I have fiddled with it on and off and kept looking but found nothing till this. I knew the back had a weight but did not know the stylus needed to be aligned.
Very informative!! Vinyl is final is very catchy!! A lot more to it than I've ever known before. I wish this was included in the original documentation...

Hi Craig, thanks for your videos, they are helping me getting back on the vinyl after 20 years. I liked very much this one because I never knew how to calibrate the tonearm and the cartridge and after that decided to buy an AT-LP 120 USB turntable like yours. The price seems to be nice for what I saw, so it is on transit and next week I will receive it. Trying to know more about it I search the net and found "a known issue" that scared me - excessive motor noise that intoduces rumble in the playback and it is very annoying, especially in quite passages on the tracks being played. I don't do DJ or like heavy rock, on the contrary I like soft music, smooth jazz, and so it will be a problem to me. I found this video ruclips.net/video/YxVa8THzAEA/видео.html and also many others with several attempts to isolate the noise sticking sponge or cork under the aluminum plate, putting orings around the arm, replacing the felt mat with cork or rubber mats, but none solving the problem... Did you knew this problem? If so, as it seems to be "normal" how did you eliminate this hum/mechanical noise? Thank you and keep uploading videos
Watched your clip and found it great. Didn't know about cartridge alignment so learned something new as a baby boomer. Inspired me to finally unbox my Akai AP-D30C turntable and found the tone arm weight almost snapped of the back of the arm - sob, sob. The black plastic bit the weight slides on. Can you recommend a video clip showing how to remove the tone arm as I think I might then be able to glue the plastic back together.

And after another quarter-dozen or so watches... When I actually went to set up my TT, I think I merc'd the stylus on my cart. I have a 1/4 inch or so cork slipmat, and I think the stylus dragged over it for the length of about 6 in. or so. I can't confirm that for sure since I literally don't remember, cause when he said "crack open a beer," I heard "bust open that bottle of Grey Goose." And I started taking shots every time he said "a-BOAT" or "a-GAIN-snt.) At that point, I'm pretty sure I was hearing Yimi Hendrix doing a cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" on pipe organ (with vocals *and* jam.) And then I woke up and it was actually the 180 gm re-issue of "Hysteria" playing, but now that I'm sober (?) Great video! I "found" a Pioneer PL-540 Turntable that spins, is balanced properly (thanks to your video) but has no sound when connected to my system. The RCA terminals are pitted and weathered - could that be the problem?
My old Thorens has a counterweight anti skating set up. I think its 4 or 5 matching set of grooves on to "rods" extending from the back of the tonearm. How do I properly set that to match the weight/pressure setting?
This is a great video. The one question I have, given that I've been researching all this of late due to replacing my cartridge, is: if you have an overhang gauge and match the stylus to the 49mm line, is it really necessary to also use protractors? This seems a somewhat controversial issue. I have a PL-510 and just bought an AT-VM95EN to replace the Mission 775 that was on the tonearm. Then, I also bought an overhang gauge that several eBay sellers are making to the same specs as the original one that came with my turntable (unfortunately over the course of 45 years I no longer have it). So - having used the gauge and eyeballed it as best as possible, do I still really need to get a protractor?
I’ve been “into” vinyl since I found my dads wax on the 90s. I watched it die and come back. But never had to fix anything on my system because I knew a guy that could help, now I moved away and gotta do it myself:( My daughter is getting into it now, so I’m trying set up a turn table in her room. She bought some records to play, but only has a Victrola. I set it up and realized the stylist is garbage. Ordered a new one and put it on. I have to watch videos to learn how to do it! Jeezzz
Why does leveling matter when the cartridge has the exact same tilt? The only adjustment necessary would be to change the weight and anti skate depending on how it is tilted. This could be automated very easily if you're trying to build your own turntable.
I followed the recommendation for the Stanton 680hp cartridges as being 2 grams for balancing the tone arm, used a digital scales to measure it for the 2 grams stylus pressure, but found that the needle skated from the edge of the record to the beginning of the first track in a split second, it did this with every record, I had to then give it 3g weight to stop the skate, would not leveling the deck with a spirit level be able to cause this?
Hi.. So I have a NAD C588 turntable with a Ortofon Black 2M stylus. Recommended force is 1.5. The weight says I am on 1.5. Antiskate is also set to 1.5. So my question is; should I increase the antiskate dial so the stylus stays in place on a blank vinyl? Because I briefly tried and that puts the antiskate all the way to 3.something.. Is that not too much? would I risk damage to stylus/vinyl by doing that - or do I risk damge by NOT doing it? PLEASE HELP!
Maybe there is something different about mine but I swear setting it like this is impossible. If I set it to balance horizontally, it doesn't have enough weight to keep the needle on the record. And even if I balance it to the platter, it just ends up being way too sensitive to any vibrations.
Hi ! Mr. Herman Woods here , I went to down load .The Protractor ,for my seft . But it came out wrong ! I wonted to ask you ! On down to Down load it the right way. I did it it ,an it came out about 6 inchs shoter .I belive 180mm 's in inch's is around 7 inch's .Can you help me , on what to do .Thank you for your time Mr.H. Woods

i think you must search for help in other place or you´ll never have your turntable correctelly set up,that´s why i never called my self a audiophile but a hi-fi enthusiast, audiophiles can be ....whatever, not good in the pictuire ,not having anything against you, we never met but some are really assholes soiled and everything"the SL-1200 never was ment to be a professional turntable but a audiophile turntable" as an example i only asked him "to whom are their good turntables?"than "check the technics 72 catalog" when audiophiles till 2010 said to be a working horse the SL-1200
I have the highest respect for a man who advises me to crack open a beer before getting down to the tedious task of aligning a cartridge. Very informative video. Highly appreciated!
A beer is better because you don't want doobie ashes on your Doobie Brothers LPs but you need to be calm and focused for the cartridge surgery. #trustaboomer #justkiddingimgenX #thosearentreal#s
If you opened beers, you might get confused somewhere during this process and stick the cartridge up your ass instead. So, just go with a heavy mug of coffee. Ya need to be alert and not be compromised on finger dexterity.
Don’t forget about the unnecessary expense, the shitty sound quality, and the carcinogenic toxicity of polyvinyl chloride. Other than that, it’s the future of music.
Sometimes We have to stay with Technology That Works For Us Even If It"s From the 19th Century!!!! The Record Has The best Sound Quality Around,,100% of the Music is Transfered Into The grooves with no analog to digital or digital to analog conversion (which can affect Audio Quality)
I happen to have the very same turntable, so that helps a lot, but I have to say that your video is the best I have seen. At 86, I am retired from the record business as a producer (Riverside, Columbia, Prestige) but I wish I had known what you teach with such clarity. Better late than never! Thank you, I will subscribe.
Oh my gosh! I am familiar with your work! It is incredible how small the internet makes the world. Your contributions to jazz music are appreciated. I am so glad that I came across you here!
I'm 66 years old and have just now learned how to setup my turntable. Just wondering how bad the sound was when I was younger. Did it matter or was I high? Now I need to go put on my magnifiers and just go do it. Thanks.
Wow, that was a learning...I'm 54 years old, so grew up with record players, but have never had anyone explain all these things in such depth...thank you! I have subscribed!
Not necessarily a great idea. Tracking weight varies with the angle of the tone arm, so a scale will only give you an accurate weight when the height of the scale matches the height that your record will be. Most scales are too thick to give an accurate measurement, which is why these stylus scales exist; note how thin they are
Like many here, I had to retire to find the time to set up my record player properly. I gave my 1000 record collection to my daughter years ago and bought her a cheap turntable combo to play them on. It was great as she started listening and loving the same vinyl music I did decades earlier. Then I started listening to them and the sound blew me away -even on the cheap thing I bought for her. Years later here I am, browsing 2nd hand shops for records and playing them on a vintage LXI direct drive turntable I just upgraded the cartridge on, slowly building another collection (no, I never asked for them back), finally setting it up properly. Thx for your clear direction on this. It was a big help.
Drick, try going to a local hi-fi shop that sells decent turntables. Some will let you use/borrow their stylus force gauge. Others will be jerks. It just depends on what they’re willing to do to generate goodwill in the community.
Well done. I've been looking for this information for a couple of months. This is the first tutorial I've found that helped me say "Oh, hey, I can do that right now!" A clear, well presented walk-through that didn't make me feel like I needed to get a Bachelor's in engineering first to set up my turntable rig and gave me confidence that it was technical and important, but that it wasn't rocket science either. Now I think that I've got it dialed in and can feel more confident about playing and ripping my records. Thanks!
Me, 25 minutes ago: "I've been listening to vinyl for 40 years! Of course I know how to set-up a turntable!" Me, 25 minutes later: "Holy crap, there was a lot I didn't know about setting up my turntable properly!" Cheers.

Thank you for misaligning your cartridge for our sake. Muchas gracias!
Great video! I "found" a Pioneer PL-540 Turntable that spins, is balanced properly (thanks to your video) but has no sound when connected to my system. The RCA terminals are pitted and weathered - could that be the problem?
I'd spin the platform with the level on it and make sure the bubble is center all the way around
Thank you very much!!! You are the best!!!
Great video, thank you sir! Subscribed
You didn’t mention arms with magnetic bearings anti skating.. I have that on my Cleradio!
My old Thorens has a counterweight anti skating set up. I think its 4 or 5 matching set of grooves on to "rods" extending from the back of the tonearm. How do I properly set that to match the weight/pressure setting?
such a great video thanks so much
how about movie soundtracks? will those be more complex to set up?
This is a great video. The one question I have, given that I've been researching all this of late due to replacing my cartridge, is: if you have an overhang gauge and match the stylus to the 49mm line, is it really necessary to also use protractors? This seems a somewhat controversial issue. I have a PL-510 and just bought an AT-VM95EN to replace the Mission 775 that was on the tonearm. Then, I also bought an overhang gauge that several eBay sellers are making to the same specs as the original one that came with my turntable (unfortunately over the course of 45 years I no longer have it). So - having used the gauge and eyeballed it as best as possible, do I still really need to get a protractor?
you didn’t talk about tonearm height. my AT-LP120 won’t go low enough, i have to use 2 mats on the platter.
I’ve been “into” vinyl since I found my dads wax on the 90s. I watched it die and come back.
But never had to fix anything on my system because I knew a guy that could help, now I moved away and gotta do it myself:(
My daughter is getting into it now, so I’m trying set up a turn table in her room.
Many thanks for your info.
Thanks, very helpful
Terrific video!
My down force scale only goes to 2. The cartridge manufacturer (which comes with it) says it should be higher. What do I do?
Thank you for this.
I have an ortofon om10 on mine that dont seem to have any square edges, have you any recommendations for these type?
Doesn’t the height of the scale affect the weight??
This alignment technique doesn’t work with straight tone arm.. which technique does it take to align a straight tone arm?
Thank you Sir 👍🏼
vinyl is final. needs to be on your shirt... don't know why you hadn't done that... i'd buy that shirt...
And even if I balance it to the platter, it just ends up being way too sensitive to any vibrations.
what is your stylus press gauge brand are you using?
Hi ! Mr. Herman Woods here , I went to down load .The Protractor ,for my seft . But it came out wrong ! I wonted to ask you ! On down to Down load it the right way. i think you must search for help in other place or you´ll never have your turntable correctelly set up,that´s why i never called my self a audiophile but a hi-fi enthusiast, audiophiles can be ....whatever, not good in the pictuire ,not having anything against you, we never met but some are really assholes soiled and everything"the SL-1200 never was ment to be a professional turntable but a audiophile turntable" as an example i only asked him "to whom are their good turntables?"than "check the technics 72 catalog" when audiophiles till 2010 said to be a working horse the SL-1200

I have the highest respect for a man who advises me to crack open a beer before getting down to the tedious task of aligning a cartridge. Very informative video. Highly appreciated!
Exactly,,,better grab 2..
That’s probably because he makes his own, that’s what all the stuff hanging in the background is for
I open a beer before doing anything with my turntables.
A beer is better because you don't want doobie ashes on your Doobie Brothers LPs but you need to be calm and focused for the cartridge surgery.

If you opened beers, you might get confused somewhere during this process and stick the cartridge up your ass instead. So, just go with a heavy mug of coffee. Ya need to be alert and not be compromised on finger dexterity.

It's a happy little turntable...
Oh yes sir he is!
real talk.. He is the man!
the best part about vinyl is the extreme inconvenience
Inconvenient, and expensive?? I'm in
Its sounds good doe
Don’t forget about the unnecessary expense, the shitty sound quality, and the carcinogenic toxicity of polyvinyl chloride. Other than that, it’s the future of music.
Sometimes We have to stay with Technology That Works For Us Even If It"s From the 19th Century!!!! The Record Has The best Sound Quality Around,,100% of the Music is Transfered Into The grooves with no analog to digital or digital to analog conversion (which can affect Audio Quality)
And the missus telling you to get that stupid "record player" out of her living room.

Wow! Can you tell me a little about my favorite musician, Cannonball Adderley?
wow.. greatly appreciate your work. thank you sir. love riverside recordings esp those from c adderley
Nice! Riverside! I can only imagine what it was like working with Bill Evans
very nice Chris those are fantastic record labels 🤚😉
I'm 66 years old and have just now learned how to setup my turntable. Just wondering how bad the sound was when I was younger. Did it matter or was I high? Now I need to go put on my magnifiers and just go do it. Thanks.
Great comment, I laughed
Niel Young Harvest sounds great anyway
You were doing it right man haha respect
😆
Agreed! I listened to records all the time, but didn't know any of this.
Wow, that was a learning...I'm 54 years old, so grew up with record players, but have never had anyone explain all these things in such depth...thank you! I have subscribed!
Heh. I just posted almost the exact same comment.
I'm 65 and back in the good ol days, we didn't know about the protractor. Going to have to check my Technics TT.
these are called TURNTABLES, you dingbat! Did you not pay attention in his class???
I called - and still call - them record players. They play records! 👍😅
And all the record players I remember from the 80s were pretty crappy, no fine tuning on them.
For the stylus gauge I used my old weed digital scale and worked perfectly 🤣
Was also thinking about using that. Good to know it works :D
This is a great idea! I have one that's accurate to .000 grams, which is just as good as these stylus scales.
Not necessarily a great idea. Tracking weight varies with the angle of the tone arm, so a scale will only give you an accurate weight when the height of the scale matches the height that your record will be. Most scales are too thick to give an accurate measurement, which is why these stylus scales exist; note how thin they are
@@RangerLink667 Thanks for the clarification. My scale is a very thin one, so indeed worked.
OH YEAH...THAT’S WHAT I WAS DOING! I got as far as grabbing the scale...and some weed...and...(hmm, where was I going with that?).
You have such a calm and sympathetic way of explaining those things. Very helpfull video! Thanks a lot.
Must be because he's Canadian (I can hear it).
Ok Dude I tried all this but that CD still won't play
😂😂😂 I'm dying
Put it in the 8 track player, this turntable is for vhs
Same, if anything it's completely scratched my CD collection.
Flip it over. Cds are one sided.
Haaaaa!
"If it's not the right size, it ain't going to work". My wife says that all the time. Didn't need to hear that again. Damn....such is life.

Did you buy a decent amp and speakers? Albums are spendy, I wouldn’t know which to buy first. Want to pick out ones you won’t grow tired of.
Stylus pressure gauge? We ain't playing here.
This is serious shit here!
These were quite common back in the day. I have about three. Some cartridges come with them.
Drick, try going to a local hi-fi shop that sells decent turntables. Some will let you use/borrow their stylus force gauge. Others will be jerks. It just depends on what they’re willing to do to generate goodwill in the community.
@@gregalee You can buy that balance for $10 on Amazon

Just used the same protractor and my Audio Technica LP120 is aligned straight out of the box. Someone in the factory must have been having a good day.
usually when i need a new cartridge,i buy it already all hooked up on the Headshell, and that is the first thing i check, out of the box.and YES.its usually perfecto
