Hey Jared! Don't forget that it's pretty common for many companies to have integrated amplifiers that have a preamp and amp combined too. Even more high-end companies like Peachtree Audio and McIntosh have these options! So there's pretty much an option for any two of the Full audio set-up components to be combined.

Funny story: I picked up a third turntable about three years ago used - the AT LP120 usb. For what I got it for, I love it. Then my buddy in Seattle bought a brand new one. It sounds great too. But after a while he got the bug to get another TT and he wanted a belt drive. So, we talked about the stuff that's been made available over the last decade or so. I told him he really wants to keep the replaceable headshell feature and why. So, what did he get? The same Fluance you chose. and he loves the frosted platter. He loves it. He can even swap cartridges between turntables easily because they take the same headshell mount. Interestingly, we're both 66 (we've been friends since high school) and our ears are not top notch. Being in a dozen bands as a bass player didn't help mine. I bring this up because we pretty much consider his Ortofon Blue and the AT 95 green to be "close enough for government work", That is, they both sound fine because we don't do any critical listening of the cartridges. We just do critical listening of the MUSIC. And they all sound great. And because the AT turntable has a built in pre-amp, he runs the fluance into the phono pre-amp of his Marantz 2230 and runs the AT into the aux input. So he gets to play "DJ" as we listen to his favorites (mostly blues live albums) and sip our Glenfiddich 12. Listening to vinyl is an experience that surpasses the mere music on which it's based.
One other platter mat out there is the acrylic platter mat. I’ve recently gotten one (mine is blue, but you can get it in different colors) and I’m impressed. Before I got my acrylic mat, I was using both a rubber mat and cork mat together, since rubber is good for bass and cork is good for treble. The acrylic mat handles both quite well on its own (I can only tell a slight difference). Depending on what color you want and where you buy them, they go for around $21, give or take some cents. If you haven’t tried one, Jarrett, I encourage you to check it out! I promise your ears will thank you!!! 😀😀😀
Top video, but I miss the most used setup in the 60s to 90s: 1. Turntable 2. Amplifier with a built in Preamp (Phono Input) 3. Passive Speakers! ;) I use this setup with a modern DENON AVR. My DENON X2500H has a phono line-in and it works perfect!
You forgot to mention vintage receivers versus modern receivers. Where most of the Vintage receivers have a built-in preamp for the turntable and have a ground wire. Good video.
I am so truly grateful for this one combo video. Glad I read the comment to find more crucial needed info. Thank you for sharing. Do you have a video or link that covers the 3 component setup that does not include the preamp. This is the setup I had before moving and trying to remember as I set everything up. For added info, I am using a Technic Quartz Synthesizer receiver that, yes, I do have a cassette deck connected to with the speakers running through the receiver. I am stuck how how to connect the Numark Pro TT-1 turntables (that previously were also connected to the receiver but I would now like to connect to a Pioneer DJM 909 (or NI Traktor Kontroller) I will be getting later in the month but for now could you help with getting the turntables connect to the Pioneer mixer (pretty sure once I know switching to the Traktor will be a breeze once I know the basics). Thanks and look forward to your quick response. Thanks again ❤
Have done it hundred times but God bless you for a such detailed explanation. Maybe you should mention protractor as well. And anti-skate is not that simple as well (you'd better to have calibration disc). But overall great video
Like your videos. And the AT LP 120 is a great starter turntable. I had it as my first, then upgraded to a Project Debut. Since five years I have a Clearaudio Concept, which is on a completely different level. I bought this together with a Primaluna Prologue Amp, an EAR 834P PreAmp and some Sonus Faber Toy Tower Speakers. Could have bought a small car for the money at that time, but you have to know your priorities :D While I absolutely love my setup and am sure it will last me a lifetime, I agree with the statement that the best turntable setup is the one you con afford. Can only get an AT LP 60 with some modest active speakers? Go for it! You can always get something better later, and sell your old one or give it to someone else who wants to get into the hobby. And what is great about your videos is that you show young people that want to get into the hobby that they do not need to sell a kidney to get something that will sound nice, and that all this setup is not as complex as it seems. Keep up the great work, dude!
a vinyl setup @ the price of small car is a better investment, it will far outlast a car, a fine example my Dad's old 68 HMV Rhapsody still working today, his 1968 HK Holdens probably junked long time ago
From an engineering standpoint, more components means more vibration. That’s why high-end systems don’t come with dust covers. Personally I prefer the dust cover to keep my deck clean, and I remove it when I’m using it.
Hi Jared, great video. This has been a big help. I'm hoping you can add a comment based on an issue I have run into. I just purchased a technics sl-1350. I've balanced out the tonearm, but don't have the ability to height adjust the tonearm so that is parallel with the LP's I'll be playing. I don't believe it's adjustable on this table. What should those of us without an arm adjustment do? Should we just stack an extra mat or two onto the platter?
I finally got me a Fluance rt83. I know that it doesn't have a preamp. I'm really confused on the need for a stand alone preamp and a receiver. it's probably not a brand that you have ever heard of or reviewed. I got me a Moukey Home Audio Amplifier Stereo Receivers with Bluetooth 5.0, 400W 2.0 Channel Power Amplifier Stereo System w/USB, SD, AUX, RCA, MIC in w/Echo, LED for Karaoke, Home Theater Speakers - MAMP1... do I still need to hook it up to a stereo receiver then to my passive speakers. When I purchased it I thought that I wouldn't need the receiver. Can you please look at the specs of the Moukey and let me know if I do indeed need a receiver as well. Any assistance/advice that you can help me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul White from WV...
Hey Paul! Got your messages, thank you for your patience. You said you have the following setup: Fluance RT83, a Moukey Amp, and a Denon AVR 683 Receiver. The reason you're not hearing any sound coming out of your Denon receiver, is because there is no preamp in your setup. From what I've found online, The Moukey is a Stereo 2 Channel Amplifier, not a Preamp. So basically, you have 2 amps and no preamp in the setup. Also the Fluance RT83 doesn't come with a built-in preamp either, unless you buy one from them separately. So if you just swap the Moukey Amp, with a Simple Fluance PA10 Preamp, and then connect it to the LINE INPUT on your Denon Receiver, you'll be good to go! After that you'll hear the music loud and clear! Good luck!
Of course, many turntables have zero means to adjust arm height; if too low, spacers can be added to the screws between the headshell and cartridge. If too high, the cartridge may just not be usable in your arm. Cartridge alignment is an area of great debates (signifying little?). Protractors attempt to make adjustments easier, but know they are all compromises, with the "ideal" matching only in the two spots in the arm arc. Technics (and AT) supplies a clever plastic gizmo that slips over the connector end of their headshell, which lets you adjust the cartridge position, needle centering, and reach in one step; this is slightly different from typical protractors, but has been perfectly acceptable for most who play 12" LPs. Too light a tracking force can actually damage vinyl more than too much. 2 gm is very common, but don't think 1 3/4 will be better if that's the low range of the recommended. Important: Connect the ground wire to the screw on the receiver/amp, otherwise hum may be bad.
Great video. 👍 But the main point I got from it is that record setups are very delicate and you wouldn't want to live in a high-earthquake-activity area or in a building where passing trucks can shake the floors, or anywhere else like that, or your records will get gouged. 😕
There are ways to deal with ambient noise and vibrations. In nightclubs, the decks are usually sitting on rubber balls or on foam, which is meant to dampen vibrations coming up through the feet of the turntable. Some quick research will point you in the direction of specially made products that can help your situation
So. I’ve been trying to find answers everywhere before coming here... I’m new to all this but I have a vinyl that makes a high pitch sound and I immediately had to stop playing it. I’m not sure if it’s the Vinyl or record player.
Jarrett i need your help! i cannot find the tonearm adjustment on my iskra garrard sp 25 mk iv record player, i just realized that i skipped that whole segment of the video where you talk about how to adjust that thing. i cannot find anything on literally anywhere!!! can you maybe go and have a look for that information? thank you man!!
Great video on how to setup your turntable. I'm planning on buying a Technics SL 1200G and Technics SU-700 amplifier. Does that come with a preamplifier build in or do I need to get an extra preamplifier? Thanks for your advice.
Very detailed, nice! But one question. After getting aligning the cartridge with the screws, wouldn't it be better to do the tracking force test again? Cause maybe you changed it by pulling the cartridge a bit further out or pushing it more into so it changes the weight. Or am I wrong?
are you saying that floors are not sturdy flat and level? i placed mine on the floor with a bycycle innertube slightly inflated and get amazing results
Some records are actually cut at varying angles to others. Height adjust can be used as well to compensate for this. “ Level “ is not the best spot for height adjustment. As all pressing cutting lathes use a slight angle on the groove, for technical reasons for groove tracking , frequency distribution etc. you can slightly tiny amounts less or more on the tracking force. Tracking force can vary a tiny bit from Specs depending on the table and arm you have. Great vid on setup though excellent info.
so would this setup be good enough? audio technica lp60x turntable edifer mr4 active speakers preamp (not sure which would be good enough so any rec would be appreciated)
When adjusting the cartridge do you keep the protractor in the same place when hitting the first point on the protractor to the second point and see if the cartridge hits both places or do you spin the protractor a little to see if it matches up in both places? I’m a little confused??
I have a crosley t150 and it came with a pair of speakers. Do I need an amplifier for it? It plays just fine and is a way better improvement over their all in one record players.
I use my blank test record to adjust the ant skate. My anti skate nob does not match my cartridge force. When I matched the numbers up the turntable arm kept heading towards the spindle
In the video, the cartridge is skewed. The cartridge should be perfectly straigh on the SL-1200 or any turntable with an S-Shape arm. The S-Shape provide the right angle for the cartridge in reference to the groove. You should only adjust the back and forth position, always keeping the cartridge straigh.
Great great video. Question. I've struggled with cartridge alignment and minimizing tracing distortion on the inner grooves. I've read that due to the physics of vinyl playback that this distortion can only be minimized, never totally eliminated. When aligning the cartridge, how do you minimize parallax problems when aligning? Do you work with the table on the floor so you can look directly down on it? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck!
Thanks so much for the reply. I did finally figured out that I needed to purchase a standalone pre-amp. Didn't cost too much and works like a charm.
Great. Thank you. Easily understood. Merry xmas
Thanks so much for this video! It really helped a lot!
Great video. 👍
But the main point I got from it is that record setups are very delicate and you wouldn't want to live in a high-earthquake-activity area or in a building where passing trucks can shake the floors, or anywhere else like that, or your records will get gouged.

Thanks very much. Great video 👌
A very cool song: Songs from the Wood by Jethro Tull. It’s like the folk / rock Bohemian Rhapsody 🤩
specially in AT-LP120 check the switch about 120 V and 220 V
Great video on how to setup your turntable. I'm planning on buying a Technics SL 1200G and Technics SU-700 amplifier. Does that come with a preamplifier build in or do I need to get an extra preamplifier? Thanks for your advice.
Hey Jared, what about acrylic mats?
Hi man. Do I need a ground rca wire or could be a normal (hifi) rca cable and other simple ground to ground cable. Thx
Do you think you Could do a full audio set up video including your cassette, vinyl and (Cd if you have it) pls
Can you use a soundbar also as a amplifier?
Will you be doing one of these with the AT-LP120XUSB? I just ordered mine
Very detailed, nice! But one question. After getting aligning the cartridge with the screws, wouldn't it be better to do the tracking force test again? Cause maybe you changed it by pulling the cartridge a bit further out or pushing it more into so it changes the weight.
Or am I wrong?

Do receivers normally come with amplifiers? And is it recommended to get a receiver over an amplifier?
Hey just double checking is a MARANTZ turntable good? Cause I have one
Yes they are good
@@jacksong6226 ok
are you saying that floors are not sturdy flat and level? i placed mine on the floor with a bycycle innertube slightly inflated and get amazing results
Great tips brother and nice haircut.
Thanks for this video man‼️
Some records are actually cut at varying angles to others. Great vid on setup though excellent info.
so would this setup be good enough?
audio technica lp60x turntable
edifer mr4 active speakers
preamp (not sure which would be good enough so any rec would be appreciated)

When adjusting the cartridge do you keep the protractor in the same place when hitting the first point on the protractor to the second point and see if the cartridge hits both places or do you spin the protractor a little to see if it matches up in both places? I’m a little confused??
Im new to the Vinyl hobby so just a Question,
- Turntable (no Preamp)
- to Pre amp
- to Active Speakers (HS8)
would this work? thanks
I have a crosley t150 and it came with a pair of speakers. Do I need an amplifier for it? It plays just fine and is a way better improvement over their all in one record players.
Wouldn't the thickness of the scale need to be similar to the thickness of a record for a correct measurement?
J, what about the grounding wire??
Love your videos, informative and fun. You have a new subscriber from down under :-)
I use my blank test record to adjust the ant skate.
Ooof I got a lot to learn!
