RE: acoustic treatment. Get your speakers and listening position in place, then do treatment step by step. That way you’ll hear what each step does and won’t inadvertently over damp your room. Some thoughts (depending upon your room characteristics): A rug on the floor…if you buy a “stock” rug (vs $$$), get a thick one with an open weave backing. Most have a tight or rubber or plastic which are not acoustically transparent and will reflect sound back up. Put a thick (I use ⅝ “) acoustic felt underneath rug. Inexpensive. ** Diffusers don’t work in a smallish room: not enough space. ** Absorption panels: start with L/R wall reflection points and behind your LP ( especially if you sit close to a wall) ** bass traps may help but I can’t make general recommendations. Now spend time listening before anymore treatment. Note: several smaller absorption panels with space between them work better acoustically than the same area covered completely with one large panel. Good luck and go slow. Room treatment is science and art and each room and listener preferences are different.

Hi Melinda, it's lovely to see you again. My number one priority in your music room would be to place you Rega P8 turntable on a wall mounted isolation platform, to remove any vibrations produced from the flooring being picked up by your cartridge. I hope that you find this helpful. Take care.

Glad to see you're back doing videos. I always enjoy them. You already have a lot of excellent suggestions for room treatment. Plants and bookcases with random sized books make good inexpensive diffusers. For speaker setup, PS Audio has a great book called "The Stereo" for instructions on setting up your speakers. It comes with an accompanying CD or LP that has numerous tracks for finding the best listening position and speaker placement for great soundstage and imaging. I found it very helpful and easy to use. Good luck on your endeavor. I know It will be a lot of fun.

Hello Ms. Melinda! It is good seeing you again. Congratulations on the new house and location. When I retire I may move there, but then again I might actually end up missing the snow hear in Baltimore (which this 64 year old Black man can't stand too much of!). Recently I purchased a pre-owned Sota Sapphire turntable after enjoying my Sota Comet for 30 years. It was kinda melancholic leaving the Comet and revelatory with the Sapphire. I've been sold on inner suspension turntables. I haven't played cd's in weeks! Just a update in my audiophile world. Congratulations again to you and your family. I'll see you later.😊👍

I am feeling your excitement. Good to see you sharing again. So many connections in this one. That Mountain album looks interesting. I listen to Outlaw Country so I am used to hearing a lot of Tyler Childers. I love his music. Also, I used to watch Lance Armstrong in the Tour De France at the time my mother was in her last days. Lance was my relief in the evenings after the anxieties of the day. And recently I got in the mood for connecting with some of the music that I heard in my early university years. Chicago II was the first album I danced to (I was a late bloomer). Moody Blues Every Good Boy Deserves Favor I heard constantly. And anything Bob Dylan was doing around 1970 is strongly attractive to me. Best wishes to you on all your projects.

Awesome room to fill with music, you're so lucky. It will be fun!
Plants in it will be a nice touch. I have that too. I have also a 'rule' of no plants near equipment because sooner or later a little accident of giving water to not just the plants is going to happen. So, to bend my own rule, the loudspeakers have artificial plants on them, making the big towers look less imposing. Artificial plants can be so good nowadays that visitors have to look twice to realize that the ones on top of the speaker towers are not real 😊

Hi, Melinda! Congrats on the new house and new music room! I just bought a forever home here in Indiana 2 months ago, and I know what you are going through right now. 😅 It's exciting, though, and I hope you enjoy the process of making your music room/entire house match your style. 😊 Sound proof panels are definitely what I would recommend. I, myself, am still working on my music room. I love that you are adding plants and your art. It's super important to make a space that promotes high vibes!

Hello Melinda! Great to have you back. Your plans sounds great (no pun intended) for you music room , with couch , plants and other stuff. Any updates about your jukebox ? We really hope it’ll be resolvable. Yesterday I took Annette to see Europe play on an outdoor festival. It’s one of her favourite bands. I especially enjoyed seeing the look in her eyes and hearing her sing along thru the whole gig. Also ; I’ve FINALLY got my hands on a copy of Led Zeppelin’s Celebration day 3Lp box. To make it a tripple-whammy would be to hear that the jukebox will be in that music room. Take care. A&R

Hi Melinda, so great to see you again and I missed you too on RUclips. I don't really have a designated music room in my home. Actualy it is spread out in two rooms in my house, but someday I hope to do that. I wish I could suggest more to you, the only thing is, which you probably know already is the sound will be better on your stereo system if you can have your speakers at least 6-8 feet apart. If they are closer then that you get as much of a soundstage. But, I hope the move and everything goes smoothly and looking very forward to seeing your new music room. Stay well and my best to your husband. Take care

Welcome back Melinda, lovely to see you again on your channel. It’s very kind of you to put in the time knowing just how busy you are while you move house and renovate your new home. It’s wonderful to see you so excited about your new music room which I’m sure you’ll be very proud of. As a lucky owner of a dedicated music room I can promise you that it’s an investment you won’t regret. I think all the ideas you mentioned about room treatment have merit, however, I wish to offer one tip. Don’t go overboard with damping. Too much damping can kill the feel of the music, making it sound flat and lifeless. Listen to how it all sounds after you’ve moved all your sound equipment, record racks and furniture in, then introduce acoustic treatment gradually as required until you achieve a sound you’re happy with. Best wishes and good luck! Martin

Good to have you back. It’s really admirable that you sacrificed so much to be close to your daughter, as I always say family is the most precious thing in life.
Great choice you made. On to your predicament first thing first. Get a couple of tube traps for the corners behind your speakers, they will reduce and control unwanted bass frequencies that can mar the low end response of your speakers. Then use diffusers on the front wall between the speakers and absorbing panels on the back wall behind your listening position. Both of this type of panels can be had for not much money and look great if you do not go overboard in their application. There are absorbing panels that are also diffusers (the ones I use) that also are somewhat decorative and come in a myriad of designs. I know you use REL subwoofers, try placing the RELs along the side walls (one on each side) facing towards your listening seat or couch. This will help counteract any standing waves, dips or spikes in frequency response making the low frequencies more smooth, deep and balanced. Of course you will have to work a little moving the woofers forward or backwards towards the wall behind them. I hope this tips will give you the good sound you deserve. Happy listening 🎉😊

Hi Melinda - good luck with the music room. So much advice, so many different ideas. Personally one step at a time - get your turntable and speakers positioned, put in your album storage shelfing etc etc you may find you dont need an awful lot of acoustic treatments. I have floor to ceiling CD shelfing, I have book cases full of music books etc etc etc. AND dont forget, most importantly, and as "Mazzy" says - "Its the music stupid" !! Good luck with it. Nice to see u back and enjoying your move lol. The new music room is good to have dark or at least just a few windows for less sunlight. I know that sounds odd but u now have a chance to install track / spot lighting which u can focus onto your Turntable and audio equipment. Windows also are not good for sound bouncing and changing pitch. Acoustic panels would be great but cheaper is using cork. Cork wall sheets looks good and dampens sound. Throw rugs are a must on any hardwood floors.

Welcome back young lady! I noticed just one window for natural lighting in your new music room? Anyway to bust out the wall and place a matching window equidistant to the other one? Just to get some extra natural lighting? My brother and I just spent 60 grand or so updating my elderly mothers 2700 Sq ft. two story home in Fountain Valley, Orange County, CA. So much work, hope you and Phillip have a good contractor to do your renovations. Your smart to lighten the floors, replace the baseboards, put lots of area rugs, etc. Sounds like you're doing everything right. Thanks for getting back to us, we all miss you greatly!❤❤ P.S., picked up Seal's 30th Anniversary LP and Diana Krall's 'Live in Paris' lp!

Be true to yourself Melinda. Forget acoustic panels. Soft furnishings and curtains will suffice. No experts. You still need some liveness to the room. Set up the furniture first, position the hifi and listen. The room acoustics will be new. Take time to notice the sweet spots. Different room, different sound.

Exciting times for you and your system! Personally, I would get your system set up in the position you want and then get everything isolated to the best level. Recently, I've been upgrading to Stack Audio AUVA isolation pucks and speaker feet. They are based in the UK but deliver Worldwide. You'll find a few RUclips videos about them. I've never experienced such a single improvement in overall sound quality and pure listening joy than when I started using their products. They are a little expensive but you'll have them for a long time. I don't recommend wall-mounted turntable platforms - It's better to keep your system isolated from the fabric of your house. Once your system is set up, then play around with rugs, furnishings, plants, wall hangings, the height of your seating, the humidity of your room, the positioning of cats and dogs......hahaha!

rectangular room is good. When you come into the room, speakers should be along the left wall. Couch in 2/3 deep in the room leaving ample room behind couch. then, wall acoustic foam pieces deco on side walls, deco bass traps in corners... I know expensive, but you can find some used. I used memory foam 24"x48" painted with latex paint and worked great! Just don't touch them after. Heavy theatre drapes I bought some as they are also called blackout drapes will be your friend. Keep equipment rack not too high off the ground and interfer with imaging. May need to build a new low equipment rack, like 60"x12"x16" deep. Mounting wall mounted isolation turntable platform is a good idea..... good luck!😀

I'm glad to see that things are moving along greatly for you and your husband. Sounds like you're going about doing things right too in your new music room. I'd be excited too if I were setting up a new music room. It gives you a chance to start with a blank slate and do it just the way you want to the first time :-)
It's kind of funny but I was watching Mike's In Groove weekly video this morning and thought about you and the move y'all were doing. It was just a brief thought and I was wondering when a new video might be forthcoming from you. All of the sudden, the In Groove video just stopped and RUclips went to this video. I swear, I didn't touch anything and nothing happened that would cause it to do that but it did. RUclips just jumped to this current video you had recently uploaded. I thought that was kind of unusual haha.
I'm going down to Houston this weekend and closing on the family house down there. You're not joking when you talk about the amount of work and how busy this kind of stuff can keep you. I'm going to try to move what I can back up here where I live but unfortunately a lot of stuff will be going to Goodwill and really anywhere that will take it since I don't have an easy way to get back and forth between Houston and where I live to take care of moving things. I just don't have the storage room up here and I guess it is time to let some things go anyway. One thing I'm looking forward to bringing back is all of my posters from my old bedroom. I have tons of them and I did try and take good care of them through the years. If I ever get my music room set up here at the house where I live, I'll be able to hang up my posters from the 1970s and 1980s in it. It's kind of sad knowing the home will no longer be mine but it is what it is and it's time to let that piece of my history go.
It's great to see a video from you Melinda and I hope everything goes smoothly with your move. And I look forward to seeing any new videos especially when you start setting up your new music room! It's going to be awesome I know!

@@MelindaMurphy Thanks Melinda! And you are right about it being difficult moving. I can't believe how expensive moving has become. An old girlfriend that I've stayed friends with all through the years and her fiance are moving between San Antonio and Virginia right now. She is a flight attendant and he is a pilot for United. The airline will pay one time for a move so they are taking advantage of that. I could not believe it when she told me that it was $40,000 for the moving company to move their contents from their home between San Antonio and Virginia. Wow! That is a hefty sum of money. Needless to say, they'd be doing it themselves if United Airlines wasn't paying for :-)

The best to you on the new music room. I'm hoping there will be more than one option for speaker placement, as that can make a real difference. I don't get everything my speakers have to offer because I have only one placement option, which negates the holographic imaging I heard at the audition. The image, though wide, has little front-to-back depth; unfortunate, but If I'm truly listening to the music and not the sound it's less of a bother. Be sure your speakers can breathe!

My secret is to make the whole house the Rush bat cave. I basically have 4 ft hall speakers in the living room and since it's open to the kitchen I rock while I get cooking. My audiophile friend says it's not perfect but he said the heavy plant containers help keep the Permanent Waves from bouncing around. I have the hall speakers because I kept ruining the fine speakers, and overloading amps. I still have vintage British IMF speakers but I'm careful not destroy them. I bet Philip can't wait to drive up here to take in all that is Rush😂 Happy 4th upcoming to my American brothers and sisters. The Indigo Girls are great. Best from Canada, you have any Tragically Hip? " New Orleans is sinking and I don't want swim ". My daughter is healthy, nobody should have to worry about their kid in peril. Hey. Welcome back. I see you got your mfsl Van Halen 2 before me again. Lol. I’m expecting mine Saturday. Looking forward to cranking it up. Best advice I could give in improving the sound would be to put some distance between the couch / sofa and the speakers. My room I have the sofa about 8 feet away from the speakers and spaced 3 feet away from the back wall with 9 feet of space between the speakers. When I get into the sweet spot on the sofa. Also you might want to keep the grilles off the speakers. I think with mine they do sound better without them. .

Holy cow i see VHII back there! Still waiting on mine.always good to see you. I worked in a family run moving business for a long time years ago.i feel your pain.wish i could be there to help. Edit: the retro idea, couch and all, i fully support ❤ i guess my best advice for what its worth, is like we do with our record collection. Grab something to hold a place while you look for your perfect piece.as you know, if we rush anything, we wind up spending out tha wazoo.and the hunt can be a lot of fun

I agree with you. I do want to wait for that perfect couch. 😀
I haven't done a blind test on VH 2 yet but my initial thoughts on this one step are extremely positive. Thank you and take care.

Hi Melinda, glad that your moving is on track, hope you will settle down soon.
For the music room I would suggest that as soon as the room is furnished and the floor is treated, you should ask an acoustician to 'measure' your room to find the real characteristics, this way you can position the acoustic panels, so that when you install your speakers, without overdamping the room, and find any weakness in the acoustics.
The room acoustics are as important as the (good) speakers!!
Hope that your next video will be in sunny Florida and your brand new house.
    Cheers from France
