I’m happy to hear you’re safe from all the terrible weather that Florida has been having.
I am disabled and living on disability so even when prices weren’t as high, I still had to be careful with how much I spent. Now, vinyl is pretty much out of the question. I do buy some records on occasion but I buy CDs instead when I want something. There’s so much vinyl I want to rebuy (I sold off most of my collection) and new purchases. The last record I purchased was the new remaster of The Monkees “Headquarters” from Rhino. But that’s all I purchased over the last few months. Keep up the great work!

Living on disability would be extremely difficult with the expense of living being so high. Buying CDs is probably a smart move so that you can still own the music you want. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Glad that Team Murphy is doing okay, Florida has definitely welcomed you guys by sending you 3 in 2 months, yikes! I still love watching all of my vinyl friends, especially you, even though I'm a CD guy. Just my thoughts here, but the format isn't as important as the content that's on the record. The content is what unites us all, the love for the actual music, the artists, the concerts, stories and experiences. I have a running joke with my daughters that 'we're building a financial empire, one penny at a time' so yes, I do love that CD's are much more affordable. Also wanted to say that I love your new music room!

I agree completely. I used to own a blank tape that my cousin gave me with Prince's 1999 album on it. She recorded it from her record album. There's no way the sound quality was great but I loved the music regardless. It is a lot more about the music and what it means to us personally. Everything else just adds to the fun. Thank you and take care.

Record prices have really gone up. I still feel like there’s good value in getting the records you want and enjoy. However, especially when buying online, trying to stick to a single vendor makes sense to save on shipping. Ultimately, though, value is always in the eye of the beholder.
    Glad to hear you’re safe!

I absolutely love that you usually share a little memory that’s associated with the music/album you’re talking about. That is *such* an essential aspect of music for me - the almost sense-memory feelings you get when you hear a song that had some sort of significance during a notable period, or even just a fleeting moment, in your life. It’s amazing what music can do, especially in those moments when you hear a song in a grocery store or in passing on the radio and it instantly brings you back to a moment you completely forgot about. It can really be magical. So thank you for sharing! So cool to hear what the same song or album means to different people, and which memories in one’s life it may trigger. 😊💙

Thank you so much for the kind words. This is an important part of my music listening experience. Sometimes when I am putting on a record, I can almost feel the presence of my childhood bedroom in a house that was torn down a few years ago. Music is the only thing that can bring back such vivid feelings and memories. That's why I wanted to get back into vinyl records and why I wanted to have this channel and watch other channels. ♥️ I'm so glad that this is your takeaway from the videos I create. Thank you so much for letting me know. Have a great day!

Melinda, glad to hear you are safe. Your question about record prices ties into some feelings I've had about my record collection. I started collecting records again about 8 years ago. I've had fun buying and selling some great records and now have close to 700 records. Recently, I started playing some CDs as I have a collection of about 500. As the CDs played, it brought back memories of playing them in the 80s and 90s and a lightbulb went off for me. The reason I play records is that, for many of these albums, that's how I first heard them. And in some cases, that's the best way to hear them. For example, Boston and Van Halen are two records that have to be heard on a turntable. The CDs don't do them justice. However, albums like INXS' Kick or X and The Joshua Tree were released on CD and sound terrific. This the leads me to question why I even bought Kick on record. Does it really sound better on record or was it more the hunt to find the record? Tracy Chapman's self titled debut sounds fantastic on CD yet many of us have tried to find an LP for under $50. Why?
I'm 62 with a little tinnitus and don't hear much of difference on some records. For the time being, I've stopped buying records and have bought lots of CDs. I go through these lots, pull out the CDs I'm interest in, and sell off the rest (I just found a nice copy of the Best of Badfinger that I can play in the car). I guess, for me, it's always about the music and not necessarily pristine sound. I started listening to music on an AM transistor radio and that started my journey to FM radio, 8 tracks, cassettes, records, CDs, MP3 and streaming. Even today, I still listen to music on my clock radio while I lay in bed.
Thank you for your videos. Stay safe.

If you aren't getting greater sonics from vinyl then it makes sense to switch to CDs. It's cool to have the format in which you were introduced to an album.
It really is about the music. I just shared with another viewer that I used to tape my transistor radio on to my bike so I could listen to music. I was having fun without worrying about the sonics. Lol. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

I played Led Zeppelin Presence on CD for a younger friend of mine. Then I played the vinyl. He was blown away at the difference in quality. I bought Presence used for $4.00 in the late 80s. Not mint but excellent condition. I remember my older brother bringing home Physical Graffiti in a Woolworth bag for $5.00 back in 1976. Born in 71, I was 5yrs old. Best times.

Answer to the question - "Are companies charging too much for records or do we have less money to spend due to other factors?" - YES to both. I have spent way too much on records this year. And I know there will be more things that I have to add to my collection before the year is over. I am already waiting on 2 pre-orders. For the price of records, they should include a decent inner sleeve like the Mo-Fi style.

Take it from a 30 year veteran of lp buying. Or when I got back into vinyl in my 20s. most new so called analog remasters are half digital and they want over $40 for crap that won't appreciate.
Therefore, seek out 1st pressings that are pure analog and mastered better as they were always meant to sound and pay the same price,or a little more and watch as your investment and listening pleasure grows! Stay away from Mofi too! They always sucked even when they were true analog back in the late 70s and early 80s. Way too compressed and completely void of any good bottom end.
Avoid record store day cash grabs too. A total scam to get you to buy limited editions that mostly are inferior.
Read the hype stickers carefully to see if they claim to be full analog.
Saying that they were sourced from analog tapes doesn't mean it wasn't compromised in the next steps that lead to the lacquer process. The devil is in the details. Or lack thereof in most cases.
And don't believe a lot of heresay reviews you find up here on RUclips. They believe too much of what is fed to them by unscrupulous companies that cut these new editions.

    • @Faustustopheles
      @Faustustopheles 29 дней назад

@@davidgangemi3314that all may be true and it makes it less fun to collect but it is extremely difficult to know or even find out all the important details. for a normal person who isn't some kind of expert it's not reasonable. I agree that it is obvious that RSD stuff is overpriced garbage and quality control is nill in so many cases of even "special limited edition" pressings but there's no good way to know what we're getting most of the time.

    • @timchromecast
      @timchromecast 25 дней назад

@@davidgangemi3314indeed, but good luck with finding an early press. The average Joe that sells records on discogs has no clue what they're selling + there's much overgrading. I paid like $90 for a record that I really wanted. I didn't receive the original press, but a reissue worth max $7 in the bargain bins. The seller tells me afterwards that he had no clue that there were different reissues 😅 but he had a clue to ask $90 😅 I complained in a friendly way... result: the seller gave me a negative review. I contacted discogs staff to report fraud, but never received an answer.

I'm in this camp too. I too usually opt for the CD if I'm buying something new. It's cheaper and I can also pop in my car and listen too. I still like vinyl but they're usually a thrift store or used. I still think it's crazy to spend $30-40 for a new record. It's nuts. I remember CD's being more expensive that vinyl or tapes($12-15) when they first came out verses vinyl (about $8-9). It seems CD's stayed close to the same price but vinyl quadrupled.

  • @rolandbogush2594
    @rolandbogush2594 Месяц назад +3

It is always so good to hear from you, Melinda. Yes, new albums have become much more expensive here in the UK too, and one of the effects of that is that it stops people like me from buying an album from an unknown (to me) artist just to see if I like them. For £20, I'd give a new artist a try; for closer to £40, not so much. Btw, I recently got Dylans' Live 1974 box set of 27 (!) CDs. Basically, 27 performances of Dylans' tracks on 'Before the Flood' with a few extras that didn't make it onto that album. You wouldn't think that listening to 27 performances of essentially the same material would be worthwhile, but they are absolutely brilliant! Every performance is different - sometimes at his rawest, sometimes his most melodious - Dylan at his angriest - totally incredible. The Band are sensational throughout - just a shame that their own material isn't also included. Can't recommend this highly enough - but it's only available on CD.

Great video, Melinda! I just spent $36 at a local record store on a vinyl copy of Black Sabbath "forbidden" (2024 Tony Iommi remix) because I really wanted it and couldn't afford the Anno Domini box sets. I feel guilty for spending that much because it ran me short for the month. I recorded it onto a CD-R. I still collect mostly used CD"s and have thousands of them. I like buying used CD's on Amazon. I must be the only one who looks at the dusty records sitting on Wal-Mart shelves...lol. Yes, AC/DC or a Queen record may be $28 dollars there but whose buying them??? New records are getting too pricey for me in my situation. I could have waited to see if Black Sabbath "forbidden" will come out on CD in November - that would have been wiser for me to wait for it to be broken out of the box set on its own. Hey Melinda. Great video with some great points. Like you said, records are more expensive but so is everything else. My rule of thumb has usually been, if I already own a good listenable copy of a record I won't buy a second copy no matter what, because shelf space becomes super important, and the emotional attachment I have to that original album is irreplaceable. I've had good luck with clear vinyl, the biggest downside for me is when you're buying a used album on clear vinyl and pull it out to look at it, it's hard to see if there are any surface marks or damage. I've cut back like everyone has, and I try to be more selective, and won't buy an album if I feel I won't really play it that often. Cheers

New vinyl pricing is directly why that article this week mentioned a 33% decline YoY in vinyl sales. I think the labels have pushed that pricing elasticity model as far as it can go, and it's time for it to "spring" back to the middle. $50 for a single new LP is not the way. Hi Melinda, Vince here, I'm 62 and collecting vinyl since 1971 and ran out of space to purchase new or reissue albums. The problem I have with todays audiophile records is i think they're too thick at 180 grams. I personally think they should be pressed at 160 grams instead, but thats me, sweetie. Anyhow enough of my rant but now I when i think about purchasing new albums i have ask myself do i have the room. The album im thinking about purchasing is David Gilmour new solo album titled " Luck and Strange " is what comes to mind. Im not sure if you listen to Pink Floyd but David Gilmour is the lead vocal from that group. Theres another album i want to get and its from The Rolling Stones new LP that was release about a year ago i think. Some reissues i purchase recently didnt sound all that great. Some are good and some not, anyhow i hope you and your husband are doing great there in your new home. I do get concern when i see hurricanes headed towards there in Florida and your safety. But take care and love watching this recent video of yours. Looking forward to your next..take care.

    Until 2022, I owned a vintage record/turntable store for 20 years.
I have refurbished and sold thousands of vintage turntables and tens of thousands of vintage records.
Over that. I watched records skyrocket in popularity, And watched every company that had anything to do with vinyl and turntables really hike their prices very steeply.
My theory is that everyone in the industry believed this was a fad that couldn’t last, and therefore they were determined to cash in as much as possible while they can.
And for new records, even going back almost 10 years the pricing structure was very cynical. Normally business works on economies of scale: Something a
company will sell a lot of would be cheaper than something they sell only a few of.
But with records, the highest prices were on some of the biggest selling artists because they knew their customers were middle aged and could pay that much.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  23 дня назад +1

That's a very interesting perspective. I can understand cashing in while things are hot but unfortunately not as many people can afford the higher prices right now. Hopefully, inflation will continue to cool down. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️

I am on a limited budget and stick to looking for used vinyl. It is probably a good thing for my wallet that my taste for rather obscure progressive rock limits my purchasing opportunities due to scarcity. Usually when I finally discover one, the vinyl is in great shape because the previous owner just did not like it and played it once. Usually I will not spend more than ten or fifteen per album. There is always you tube for free listening. If money were no object I would not be so frugal. I enjoy your channel. Take care, from a 64 year old life long Floridian.

Nice gift from Harry. Again, very glad you and your family are safe. I think why the price of records seem expensive is because they are not a necessity (well to us they are lol) and we’re all spending so much on essential items. And every dollar we spend on a record takes away money that might go to something else that you need. The INXS wouldn’t be too bad until you add the shipping. That Jeff Beck doesn’t seem to bad considering it’s a MoFi. While that’s not my favorite Jeff Beck live album, it’s special to me because it’s the one Japanese pressing I own, complete with Obi. The Sabbath seems overpriced but it is a classic album. So with the Fleetwood Mac live album it’s not really overpriced too bad, but like you said, that’s a lot to lay down at one time. Of course we all have different amounts of discretionary spending we can afford. If I spent that much for four records I have a feeling my wife would not be too happy lol. Another wonderful video Melinda. Very happy for you with your new house close to your daughter and that all is well. Take care! Gary

Melinda, you will be so proud of me. I just ordered "Odyssey and Oracle!" It's backordered, though. And in line with your video's theme, it's $34.99 plus tax and shipping. It's an import; the Music Direct catalog price (domestic, I assume) is $25.99. All things considered, that's not a bad price. And you mentioned all the other factors that go into some of the prices we see on LPs today; that gets forgotten. And along with not buying LPs when you have insomnia, do not go grocery shopping when you're hungry (my problem).
At the same time, many have less to spend due to inflation and the increasing cost of other things. The LPs and the often small companies that produce them are just as vulnerable to the economic ups and downs we all experience. If I am going to buy anything, I try to consider what I'm getting for the money I'm spending and then buy or don't.

I'm hoping they used the same metal work for your copy as they did for my 30th anniversary copy. I hope you love it and that it sounds fantastic. ❤️🤗

The economy being bad has left most with little extra to buy records. I think the cost of old used records....ones that used to be $5 are now $15 to 20....is the issue! Hi Malinda, glad you and your family are doing well.
I have shifted gears lately from buying vinyl to now buying compact disc.. reason being? My last six brand new locally purchased vinyl albums over the last couple of months produced three defective albums.. thats terrible.. I paid full price for all six so I became very disillusioned with buying vinyl.. do I think vinyl is over priced? Yes I do.
A few months back I upgraded my digital front end and purchase a cd transport along with a new dac. It turned out to be a much better than expected upgrade in sound quality over my cd player.. So now, buying cd’s have become the norm and there is also a bit of savings to go along with that decision. I will be buying vinyl again but it’s gonna have to be something very special. I’m not a collector so I only buy to listen to the music I want to hear.

This year especially, in addition to being more selective, I have been bringing in my years of thrift finds for trade-in to compensate for some of the price hikes. I've brought in 200-300 records this way, and then I donate the rejects back to local thrift (and I feel mentally lighter every time). I have another few boxes to go through but it's also been time consuming to clean them. While I like that they are not only help finance my purchases, but many are finding new homes for people to appreciate them. This is, while cleaning and testing them, I'm not listening to my core collection. Next I will actually start thinning out my approx. 1100 core collection that are already entered into Discogs. I listen to 20% of my collection 80% of the time, and while there are plenty of others I revisait less frequently but still need to have in my collection, there are still some that are worth money and that I can probably move on from. Lastly, I personally really like clear vinyl and have not had noise issues...I love how pristine they look. It's some of the opaque records are I find are kind of gross. Each to their own. While I do appreciate when a record color matches the cover conceptually, it still HAS to sound good...otherwise give me black vinyl. I also generally will not pay more for a color vinyl (there is a trend when some coor releases cost more, other time they are the same price. That's my more than 🤑🤑2 cents worth. Glad you're safe!

I have been buying fewer new albums and much more used as a result. I go through waves where I don’t spend much and then I drop a nice chunk of change, but I’m getting some nice vintage titles I’ve had my eye on (e.g. Rubber Soul UK loud cut, nice copy of,Lee Morgan sidewinder).

As CDs only carry half the manufacturing cost of vinyl, it makes sense that vinyl costs more, but not four or five times more, eh?

I only buy old records in which vinyl was the original format of the release. I found the original Kink's Greatest Hits from I think 1966 (at which time they'd been banned from America - no joke) and The Who's Meaty Beaty... on vinyl for a quarter a piece one time in a RE-STORE. This particular store had a ton of vinyl until a year ago when they sold it all off and put tables for sale in their place. Luckily, they have restocked their cd section after lagging to almost nothing. Each cd is 1 dime! Unfortunately, most of the really cool cds have been stolen from the cases. Imagine that, stealing cds selling for a dime!

Here in NZ, there is also the issue with shipping costs and there only being one pressing plant. It's now fairly common for a single LP to cost $80+. To put that into perspective, a new CD cost is still $25-30. LP'S are on average 3 times the cost of a CD now. I made the decision to not even bother with buying a new release LP. Take care.

Streaming services aren’t so bad either, especially if you use a streamer or some method better than Bluetooth. I do buy new records occasionally but I get a lot more enjoyment out of used stuff. The price of vinyl records is extorbantly high. It was back in 2022 the last time that I bought any vinyl records. I'm listening to my records that I currently have in my huge record collection. I'm going to be 63 years old next month in November and I've been buying and listening to records since I was in grade school. The price of records needs come down big time in order to keep record stores open and everyone can continue to buy, listen to and collect records. I miss the early day's of the vinyl revival, back before all the reissues and the color variants, it seemed like vinyl was a bargain, you could go pick up 5 or 10 good clean records and spend less than $50, now it's not uncommon for records to cost almost $30 a piece, hard to justify in this economy, just to put things in perspective, we went to see The Commodores a few day's ago, front row seats, $45 a piece, for that we got a night of great music, songs like, "Sweet Love" "Easy" "Night Shift" and "Brick House" it was an evening of memories that will last a lifetime, and they signed my copy of their greatest hits, on vinyl of course, because we will always love our records, thanks for listening, hope all is well.

Another excellent video! I think that you feel like many of us feel about buying records.
I've never stopped buying Vinyl(records), CD's, DVD's or Blu-rays. Because of the rising prices of records, I think alot harder before I pull the lever and buy a record.
Vinyl to press records has always cost pennies per record and still does. Maybe the lacquers, now from Japan, may cost more and labor to maintain and babysit the record presses costs a little more. But retail prices are still out of line.
There are still plenty of albums which cost around $20. Maybe the vinyl weight is less and often they use the same stampers, but their prices are still more in line with what we might expect . Then there are the sale prices which are often much less than their retail prices.
Escalating record prices, along with less discretionary money to spend, has caused new record sales to drop an astounding 33% in 2024!
We look at the premium records out there, Mofi hasn't really increased their prices in this time period, but you look at Analogue Productions, who has almost all their entire production, under one roof, they have continually been raising their retail prices.
Are records too highly priced? Definitely! Is it affecting record sales? Drastically!

Growing up many years ago vinyl was only black, I have a hard time to see it in different colors and I tend to avoid it. As far as how much to spend on the hobby, it depends on our disposable income and space as well. I remember albums costing around $7.99 back in the early-mid 1980s. If you adjust that price for today, the cost is a little more than $25. That price is fair to me for a basic, black vinyl album. However, when you look at the cost of CDs over the years, it doesn't match with inflation. A new-release CD used to cost around $14 back in the early 1990s, so you would expect the adjusted 2024 price to be north of $30. How is it that CDs still are available for around the same price, or cheaper, from the 1990s? I suspect that part of it is music companies taking advantage of the hot vinyl market.

Hello Melinda ! Very happy to hear that you’re all ok. To answer your question ; yes AND no. Here in Sweden , a new release have a little higher pricetag , but usually drops to ”normal” level in a week or two. Nowadays you hardly need to worry about missing out. ”Normal” level is between $20 - $35 , if I do a rough exchange calculation from Swedish crowns. The high end sum is mostly for a vinyl release of a 90’s Cd , that mostly gets a 2Lp release. There IS exeptions. Three days ago , I ordered Sting’s 1996 release ”Mercury falling” in the 2016 re-release 1Lp for $17. Used records starts around $2 and goes through the roof if it is a rare album. I recently paid $200 for Led Zeppelin’s 1990 6Lp box in NM condition. The pandemic raised the prices for a while , but they came down again after a year , or so.

The INXS was priced fairly, and a bit of a deal compared to what an import copy would have cost you - which sadly, has been the only way to get most of the band’s catalog on vinyl for the last decade (at least, and CD, too for that matter). I’m glad Rhino has started putting them out over the last few Rocktober events, and keeping the prices at a decent amount.
Sadly, I’ll agree that pricing, in general, has gotten out of hand. I’ve really had to shop around and compare prices for stuff all over the internet at various online stores, and at Discogs and EBay to get the best deals. Most of my recent new vinyl purchase have either been sale items, or stuff from various music store’s clearance bins. Otherwise I tend to pass on a lot, or wait until I can pick it up via one of those ways. The exception being this year’s Rocktober event, where I dropped about $160 on all the titles I got, because there were so many good ones I wanted they put out this year. (More than I’ll likely even be spending on RSD Black Friday this year, or for the past April event).
Sadly, I’ve seen that same splatter colored pressing of the Black Sabbath for a lot less - around the $30 range. I don’t believe it was an RSD pressing, but do think it is an import release, which also accounts for the higher pricing.
I’ve never stopped buying CDs, and often, won’t even get the vinyl version unless I feel like it’s an album worthy of picking on the format.

Here in New Zealand we have exactly the same issue. An album pre covid was $19.95 and up and I bought a few. After covid the prices went to $40.00 plus for a new album.
The Black Sabbath album you showed is $50.00 new. I'm currently looking for a new copy of the Alan Parsons album - "Tales of mystery and imagination". A new copy of the original Gatefold album with lyric and poetry sheets will cost $159.00 and I am most likely going to buy it as it's not the remastered version which I hate. This album I have had since 1976 and its now unplayable. It's one on a handful of albums I would be willing to pay for at those prices - I still feel $40.00 is too much for an album but its what we are faced with if we want to listen to our favorite vinyl.
Oh and just as an afterthought, CDs are now going the same way. I want a newer copy of a Supertramp album for my CD collection and they are now starting at $30.00 plus - so you are not alone.

Well for me any record that is in the $20-30 range is good. After that it depends on what I’m getting. MoFi I expect to pay more, and it’s worth it. But for some I’ll just go with the CD because it is cheaper. That’s actually kind of funny because when CDs first started pushing vinyl aside, a CD was about $16-18 where a record as $9-11. So they’ve reversed.
I’m a huge Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac fan and will buy anything and everything that comes out. The live Mirage album for me, is a must have. Parts of this show have been out for decades. In the 80’s the concert aired on Showtime and was later released on VHS and laserdisc. The audio was released on numerous radio shows. Most recently it was released as part of the Mirage Deluxe Box. However, the entire show never has until now. Well, this album pulls from a few different shows, most tracks come from two shows in LA, just as the Showtime concert was. The other tracks are from a Boston show and one other that is not identified. Here’s the thing though, a couple of the songs, “Gypsy” comes to mind, is NOT from the previously released shows. There are a few more as well. So for a diehard like myself, this is a must have. Having said that, I got this on CD and not vinyl. Price being the main reason.

Great video as always, but if im not mistaken I believe Jan Hammer is pronounced "YON" (like Yon Hammer). Please don't hate me. Lol. I love his work with Mahavishnu Orchestra. Amazing stuff.

Hi Melinda! I’m glad that you are doing fine 😊 i’ve tried to send you a message through instagram but wasn’t able to. I believe we all had those moments when we reach a point where we kinda question ourselves about the money we spent and how many records we have but then there will be another releases we want and everything comes back to normality because collecting records is what define ourselves 😊 Peace! ❤

Yes, I won't fool myself by saying I'm done buying records. 😄 I don't go on Instagram often so I'm sorry if I missed a message. Thank you and I appreciate your kind words of concern. Take care. ♥️

We all know the answer is yes! 20 years ago I was paying on average €20 per new album. Now it’s around €40 which is double.
Because vinyl is in more demand everyone is trying to cash in. Back catalog titles should be no more than €20, new no more than €30.
If it keeps going like this, sales will stall and it’s goodnight Vienna!
I’ve cut my vinyl spending in the last 15 years and my main thing for the last few years is early press CDs!

Definitely we are being charged too much for albums. Sometimes i see 1 lp albums for $40 before Shipping which is crazy. Could i afford to spend $40 for a 1 lp album yes but I'd rather spend less and get two albums instead of just one.

I understand. Hopefully, the holidays will produce some amazing sales where we can get more for our money. Thank you and take care. ❤️🤗
