There are 3 types of deluxe editions
    1. The “original” deluxe. Back in the day the standard and the deluxe would come out at the same time at like a $2-$3 difference. You would get like 2-3 bonus songs or maybe a dvd.
    2. The “New” deluxe. Basically everything we’ve gotten recently which is basically a whole new album attached to the other tracks.
    3. The “compilation” deluxe. When an important album reaches a milestone and you get all of the demos, b-sides, live tracks, and leftovers, usually coming in a expensive box set.

@@frds_skce There can be alternate versions of songs that sound completely different from the final product, even some under a different song title. There can be unreleased tracks that could've ended up on the final release but did not, and even versions of songs that sounded better than the final release as well. Compilation albums are the way to go.

@@_PuppetMaster86 @The Hive Productions I jest, but i've seen fair number of actually good compilation album that does include different variation of songs which usually follow the trope of: base song, instrumental, the studio version, and whatever more.
But what I would call as shitty move when doing compilation album is that to include every tiny bit of different song that completely change nothing, but the buzzing noise included as its not 'the final product'. The 1st take, 2nd take, all shitty things included.

Lately I've gotten really annoyed at Spotify sometimes *only* having the deluxe versions of albums. Usually when I'm trying a new album, I want to hear the original-- then if I'm absolutely blown away and love the artist, I might consider the deluxe version. However, since most deluxe versions are bloated with demos, boring live cuts, or clearly unfinished songs, it's usually not worth my time.
One rare exception to this, interestingly, is the extended version of Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine. You get the 4 songs from the Love Club EP that aren't in the base album, another catchy track in the iTunes version ("No Better"), and cap it all off with an excellent cover of The Replacements' "Swingin' Party." Deluxe editions as a whole would be a lot more attractive if they did this more often, incorporating EP-only tracks or non-album singles to add to the album instead of giving me 12 live tracks and some demos.

I mean, considering how much backlash some albums face for being 15-18 tracks long, I can understand why someone would want to release a 12 track album and then release the rest in the deluxe version. It doesn’t matter for the listener, but for critic appraisal and awards, it’s something.

    • @caseys2698
      @caseys2698 2 года назад +6

For an album without a high concept/concept album and a clear specific artistic vision, I’d say 8-12 tracks is a perfect album length.
However, for albums with a lot of ground to cover within a certain concept, and/or the artist wants to explore many aspects of their artistic vision, I will always be willing to sit through 15-18 tracks, or even a bit more (if it’s good of course, lol). It just depends on the album.
For instance, I really enjoy This Is It by The Strokes, and that’s 11 tracks. But some of my favorite albums of all time are ones with solid concepts that take longer than 8-12 tracks to achieve the best version. Some of my favorites are Wild World (Complete Edition) by Bastille (19 tracks; 1 hr 6 min), Trench by Twenty One Pilots (14 tracks; 56 min 9 sec), and Smoke + Mirrors by Imagine Dragons (13 songs; 50 min 51 sec). The length of tracks is also an important distinguishing factor between shorter and longer albums-as you can see, Trench is only 10 minutes shorter than Wild World, despite Wild World having 5 more tracks than it.
I also consider Wild World (Complete Edition) to be the definitive edition of that album, while not considering the deluxe edition of Smoke + Mirrors as such, as it has some bonus tracks from the S+M sessions, and singles released 1-2 years before the album released. WW includes 5 “bonus tracks” in the Complete Edition, but those further add to and complete the album, especially The Anchor. The band must have thought so too, as it’s called Complete rather than Deluxe.
All this is personal opinion, though. Some people aren’t big into listening to long albums (or unfortunately albums in general), so they’d probably want shorter albums. I’d love to hear what y’all think! 😄
(Wow, I did not mean to type a short essay when I started this comment LOL. I could talk about music all day, but I’ll stop here! Thanks for reading this if you did-Cheers!)

In the case of Circles, I think it works a lot like After Hours, where both endings work for the albums, but 1 isn't better than the other. The standard edition, to me it feels like Mac's career, incomplete and over too soon. There's a reason the last chord is unresolved, leaving the album without a true ending. While the Deluxe edition ending on Floating, which feels almost ghostly, ends up being that final goodbye and that everything's gonna be okay in the end. At least that's my own interpretation, it also helps that I consider both deluxe songs to be among the best on the album and it would be a shame if we never got them.

So after seeing this I'm really happy that the Dawn of the Dimetrix deluxe album didn't do this. It added 2 more songs (total 13 tracks) and a second discs of nothing but all of the song's instrumentals. Didn't go over board, it just added on to the album.

I miss when Deluxe albums use to release the same day as the original version and only be an extra 2-5 songs. A very worthy 2-5. Nowadays everybody is dropping another full album to the deluxe just to push streams and cash exactly like it’s explained in this video. I’ve hated this new format & strategy the moment it started. Rarely any Deluxe albums nowadays that makes the album better.

one of my favorite deluxes is good kid, maad city. the standard album on its own makes sense; it's a concept album and only really contains songs that contribute to the story of the album. the deluxe has a lot of great songs recorded during the same sessions, but they aren't necessarily part of the story of the album (plus a couple remixes). it makes sense to give those extras that degree of separation.

The craziest deluxe I’ve ever seen is XXXTENTACION’s ? deluxe. The worst part is that he didn’t even make this and it’s so clear that it’s a cash grab. It adds songs from an EP that is already on streaming services, instrumentals, voice memos about the songs, and a recording called Jah on drums that just consists of X playing the drums. It’s a huge cash grab from his family, it’s sad and it’s plain to see. (53 songs I believe)

I remember when re-releases were huge back in the early 2010's like Teenage Dream: the Complete Confection and Pink Friday Roman Reloaded The Re-Up these would be released well after the album was number 1 and had a bunch of hits just to prolong it's longevity of it's success with extra tracks and remixes
That being said I love deluxe editions and extra content depending on the artist or if I really enjoyed the album thats my view

  • @intheskatepark

deluxe additions have always felt off to me. i never listen to the deluxe editions of things where extra songs are just stuck on the end. especially if it’s an album with a story, the deluxe tracks disrupt it and really make the story feel off, like it didn’t end when it was supposed to.
i also really dislike albums over 20 tracks, but that’s just an attention span thing. with the exception of taylor swift.

Idk how to say it but The Weeknd can be an example of this deluxe-ifying albums. He did pretty great with the deluxe of After Hours, adding 3 bonus tracks at the time of release and just a remix 1 year later (Save Your Tears with Ariana Grande). But for the deluxe of Dawn FM, he calls it Alternate World and added 3 remixes at the time of its release, the single version of Take My Breath (the only lead single from Dawn FM), and added 1 more remix (Out Of Time remixed by Kaytranada). Also he added Moth To A Flame which is a collab song b/w him and Swedish House Mafia.

I used to think deluxe albums were mostly a thing for albums like GKMC or Under Pressure where they only had enough music for 3 sides on an LP so the deluxe tracks would be for the fourth side (Camp side D is what made me think this the most). I just assumed that since music at the time were mostly made for CDs and ITunes, most artists would make albums that were either too long for 1 LP or too short for 2 so bonus tracks would work for vinyls.

@@intheskatepark the protagonists does die in until I’m bleeding out. That part of him dies the moment he starts to move on.
Just like In dawn fm the Weeknd creates a universe with his albums, but he also makes muziek about his own experience’s. The moment he breaks the circle of missing her and than partying the pain away, is the moment the character dies.
The other 3 tracks are the Weeknd himself looking back at the situation, looking back at that now dead part of himself as he lets go. The delux tracks are the rolling credits of the movie.

  • @shrtkbm
    @shrtkbm 2 года назад

I admire your take on this topic.
It is very true how cohesive some deluxe albums can be when they come from a genuine place, as in more of the less “saving” two maybe three extra songs to extend the story of the album. In my eyes anything more than let’s say 18 is enough to finish a story of an album. I feel when I’m doing listen throughs such as one comment said that they can only remember one or two songs that they may have liked and wanted to continue to listen to but it isn’t always a short attention span, if it’s ‘filler’ songs and makes the continuation of the album in a sense ‘boring’ it’s a waste of money to pursue to buy the whole album so the artist makes the extra money of one’s enjoyment of that ‘era’ someone is in their music career.
Don’t get me wrong through, extended albums with remixes and maybe acoustic additions isn’t always a problem but it should be labeled properly for the listeners awareness before diving into music.

I really enjoyed when albums used to be in between 10-14 tracks long, because it felt like the perfect combination of length and completion of the songs. Nowadays it’s hard to tell my friends “I’m gonna listen to ‘X’ album” because it’s reached 17+ songs ranging between 50+ mins to damn near hour long albums.
Cause normally I listen to a album in 2-3 listens: 1st listen is just to feel the vibe, I put it on for background music. 2nd vibe I try to sit down and see what the album is talking about. 3rd listen (if I make it here) I cherry pick certain songs and put them on playlists depending on their vibe.
But fuck man if you expect me to listen to the base album AND THEN another WHOLE ASS ALBUM more then you’re out of your fucking mind.

The only good deluxe album that I can think of in recent memory is BCNRs deluxe version of Ants from up There. The deluxe additions are a live performance of cuts from the album + cuts from their prior EP- some cuts are arguably better than the studio versions.
Most deluxe versions tend to be underwhelming. I prefer it when they release incomplete/ ill-fitting (for the original album) songs as it's own "b-sides"record.
Problem is that the album experience doesn't get the respect and attention that it used to get. Pacing and curation are important if you want your music to have any lasting impact.

That way you know you’re getting the full picture and story/scope of the album, with the only difference being an extra or substituted track on the physical copies.
