I always viewed deluxe albums as sort of a gift whenever the album does well and the artists want to surprise their fans with more than 3-7 songs. These days I feel like when an artist does low sales (or in some cases, high numbers even) it just doesn't feel enough for albums that are already 12--17 tracks long. 😬
I actually think the opposite. I think people don’t stay in an era long enough and that’s what contributes to things not sticking and moving from one hit to the next. I am a fan of anniversary deluxe albums. But I think they need to do more than a lil 3 song add on.
Also, in the 70’s and 80’s many artists would wait 5 or more years between projects. So they’d space out their deluxe albums, maybe on the 2 year anniversary. And they’d typically be touring as it dropped. One of my favorite albums (Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon) was on the charts for 14 years!!! However, I will say they’ve never put out a deluxe of the album.

This is exactly it, that’s why labels fund the original album in the first place, they want their money, it’s up to the artist to do what they want, add songs that didn’t make the cut, and extend the storyline of the original album, a deluxe is made to push sales further but if we get something a lil more that’s a blessing in itself 😂😂😂
It makes sense sometimes. Like Tyla’s. Clearly she’s about to make a shift in sound and wanted to give fans these three songs before making that change. She’s releasing deluxes how the people back in the day used to release them. Look at Beyoncé’s B’Day deluxe. It came out 8 months after the original. It’s best for bridging the gap between albums imo. Now Megan and SZA making completely different albums with different names should not be counted as deluxe albums imo

I think Tyler the Creator said it best. Folks released albums that they claimed put so much work and time into, but after a couple of months(or weeks) the album is forgotten by the artist. It depends on the artist but I have no problem extending the life of an album. Maybe it's a slow burn and the deluxe gives the fans a new perspective
I remember when deluxe albums came out the same time as the normal album, had a cool different cover and a few bonus tracks. Some of my fave tracks came from deluxe editions. Don’t know if I love deluxes being done months after the fact.
I think they’re done later now because labels aren’t investing into artists as much. So it’s almost like a reward to the artist to get to put the rest of those songs out. I actually don’t mind the deluxe coming out a few weeks/months later, it’s part of keeping the album rollout going.

Deluxe albums aren't more expensive to make, nor do they need more investment at all, the opposite in fact, which is why you have people like Tyla, Camila C, Megan, etc, releasing deluxe albums when their albums have bombed (not singles, just album sales). The songs included on deluxe albums are songs that didn't make the cut the first time, it doesn't cost anything to throw them on a deluxe, since they were all already paid for. The costs of a deluxe album are mainly the distribution costs which are instantly made back through as little as 1000 sales or less. This is why everyone and their co writers were releasing deluxe albums through the years. The reason why deluxe albums died out is ONLY due to streaming, it has nothing to do with the labels. Deluxe albums were an integral part before because they gave people incentive to buy them, therefore increasing the overall sales by a huge margin. However, with the rise of streaming, there is no more incentive to go out and buy a deluxe album, when you can instead just stream the deluxe tracks from that album, and if the songs didn't make the cut on the album the first time, then obviously the artists and the label know the songs aren't gonna catch on or become hits. Instead, deluxe albums were mainly replaced with "region exclusive" albums that included one or two tracks that only sold in one part of the world, and the song tracks were not included on streaming due to that.
When was this though? Deluxe albums have rarely ever come out at the same time as the normal album from what I know of my music history. Back in the 60s-80s, sometimes it would take even a year or two before a deluxe album came out. I can’t speak on the 90s as much, so maybe that’s when you’re talking about, but in the 2000s-2010s most deluxes came out at least 3 months after the album did, some of them a good 6 months almost. Do you have some examples of deluxe albums in the past that came out almost immediately?

What’s desperate about trying to make art that people would enjoy and having multiple versions of it? unless you’re a recording artist people should just be quiet at some point. We can barely make enough change for a cup of coffee these days after investing money in mixing recording, mastering, vocal coaching, marketing… and that’s barely even the beginning. And that just has an independent artist if you sign to a major label are you going to debt for all of these things just to be successful even though it looks good on the outside all that glitters isn’t gold.
Artists should release deluxe if they truly want to and it's sad that Tyla feels forced into relasesing a Deluxe. I prefer if a deluxe has at least 4 new songs

i think deluxe albums are annoying, like the album should good itself without needing more, people should try to embody that, why not just do another album if you wanted to bring out new music? when you release an album sit with it and make singles from it before hopping onto making new songs that fans need to then buy the album again for.
I remember growing up only certain artists would drop one, Chris Brown has one for every album, Beyonce would do one every now and then. The only two Artists who’s gotten the deluxe right is Victoria Monet and Doja. I’m kinda tired of folks adding 1 to 3 songs. Like just make a ep or a whole new project. I actually prefer when artist waits a couple of months before releasing a deluxe. When an artist drops a deluxe during the first week the album came out, it’s over stimulating. Like give me some time to enjoy the album first. and i think that’s the issue. People are used to the next big thing and moving so fast to where they are not living in the moment and actually spending time with the album. Tinashe has mentioned this in a few of her interviews recently. The world is moving too fast. Appreciate what we have first and then put a deluxe out a few months later. We are moving on from projects too quickly in my opinion. And I LOVE anniversary deluxe albums

another reason for deluxe albums are an attempt to make up for losses on the original release - your record label expects 100k pure sales. if you don’t make that - the deluxe helps the label at least try to make up the loss in sales.

I miss good solid deluxe albums had plenty to sink ya teeth into. Ones where the cover was different so it felt like something of a deluxe. The art is being lost but hopefully picks up.
It does give desperation sometimes because how Re the new added tracks better than the og album. Thats weird imo. Even though i love me a good deluxe album. I think artists aren’t putting as much thought into how impactful b sides are. Its an afterthought until the b sides out perform the “ big hits” or even kinda dismantle what the album is a whole. Amaarae did it the best with the Fountain Baby extended play … 5 whole new tracks and a remix. It offered new space to explore and was fresh and cohesive with the initial album. I don’t feel that way about Tyla even tho the tracks are good

Been loving the deluxe for Deeper Well and Older (But Getting Wiser, but we gotta recognize that some of the biggest hits from this year don’t even have deluxe albums yet. Aurora, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Rachel Chinouriri, Beyonce, the list goes on. Taylor is an exception I will say that but, when ya do great the first time you don’t really *need* a deluxe imo.
I agree with the Victoria Monet take. I wonder if her dragging this era out is maybe a sign of her fear of what’s next. The fact that it took her so long to pop off and this project was like her magnum opus. She want to capitalize and drag it out as much as possible because she feel like this era is where she finally got it right. I just hope that she trusts herself moving forward. While I’m not a huge fan, she’ll always be on my radar, especially as a performer.

2:55 I for one am actually for later deluxes. Please keep ups in your world as long as you can. I think the times (innovations, advancers and taste changes considered) have us consume a lot more of our music like midnight snacks and not Sunday meals. If Jaguar was supposed to be a 3 part EP series, but Jaguar 2 got delayed. I think it makes sense to tack on those last few tracks in the deluxe that would have made Jaguar 3. I feel like the deluxe is actually the rounding out/closing of the Jaguar era.
The music industry has changed. Artists can no longer drop an album - Then take a 2-5 year break and then come back to release another album - like in the past. It no longer works. It is all about streams and monthly listeners. Music has to be consistently released - Cardi B has only got 1 album, but the strategy of constantly releasing singles has worked very well for her to keep her relevant, in an evolving music industry. Album sales are no longer the only way to determine success - Streaming is free and I do feel sorry for these artists - But it is what is is. MASSIVE artists like Glorilla and Megan the Stallion are reporting low sales.

Tyla says she does Amapiano but her songs are like 80% afrobeats and all sound the same. The only Amapiano song in that album is Shake ah. She should've released those 3 songs as singles. There's literally no growth but a degrade in her artistry.

The thing about deluxe projects is that they used to really be DELUXE. Streaming really diminishes it to just a ADD A COUPLE NEW TRACKS cash grab. Deluxe albums before used to have new artwork, maybe you get a DVD of some behind the scenes, poster etc. It felt like something a fan and collector would want.
Yall over analyze EVERYTHING delux albums are extremely important for a number of reason. Some artists do it to capitalize off of the success of the original album, some do it to keep there names out there. some do it if the songs from the original album didn’t do to well and they want to experiment to see what’s the next sound they want to go into when transitioning into a new era. The problem is the quality of music has went down bc labels are not investing into artists like they did before streaming. I believe nobody ever did it like Beyoncé and Rihanna. they really pioneered the deluxe album for this generation. Beyoncé with B'Day revived the album, made two new hits and warmed up the tour. when you think of B'Day you think of the deluxe edition always. and Rihanna with Good Girls Gone Bad Reloaded, that for me cemented her as a real force musically. 2 #1 song out of that one reissued. legendary. none of the girls now did it grand the way Bey and Riri did it.
Its FEELS that in Tyla and Megan’s case specifically the deluxe is a way to get their albums back into the industry’s conscious around Award Voting Season. ariana is doing something similar in the sense she is giving her songs the Vevo Live treatment, again a way to ensure an album released early in the year remains top of mind for the voters.. Imo Tyla needed a deluve ala Good Girl Gone Bad, unfortunately none of the three new songs pack the punch.. Megan perplexes me, and it is evident that the label sells her songs off to ANY commercial in order to recoup what they lost in pushing the project, i am at a lost as to why we are churning out more when its clear that it is not resonating…
An example of a good deluxe ablum is Alec Benjamin's 16 Notes. I feel like the songs he added fit perfectly with the original ablum and it kinda sounds songs that could've been on it at first. He released 12 Notes at the beginning of May, did some promo, announced his tour, and then dropped his deluxe verison. It's the opposite of desperation, it's genius.

Yeah I kinda think the opposite of this especially for Victoria. Her deluxe was an extension of the story she was singing on that album. It just wouldn’t make sense elsewhere and making it an EP is in a way still creating a new storyline and i would consider THAT doing too much.
I appreciate deluxe albums, I always appreciated them especially bonus tracks and such. Tyla her deluxe wasn't needed tbh she could have kept those 3 tracks. But my girl Victoria did a deluxe due to her ending the jaguar era since it was originally supposed to be 3 parts but she closing it on two sadly but I appreciate the bonus tracks 😊. Meg if she is doing a deluxe its a first for her.

Victoria's deluxe was perfect because it was sonically in line with the OG project AND gave that era an official ending. I would rather wait months/a full year if it's going to be on the level hers was on. Ty;er's was on the same level. I enjoyed Doja's as well because the songs added more depth to her as an artist who wants to be viewed in the rap lane. This is somewhat outside of this conversation but I also like when rap artists and producers release a Deluxe edition that has the instrumentals of the OG album.
jaguar 2 is the best deluxe album. the first was is a certified masterpiece and i feel like since she became more mainstream, this was the perfect time to make a new project. can’t speak for the others 🤷🏽♀️

I’m going to say something controversial but the reason there is an increase of deluxe projects is Taylor Swift. She is and has always been a trend setter, and with the smashing success of her Taylor’s Versions, other popular artists are trying to emulate Taylor’s “vault track” success. There were really no deluxe albums pre-2021, if anything albums were getting shorter, and now artists are releasing deluxe versions of albums that are already a few years old. Argue with the wall.

Apparently Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster was a deluxe edition, I had no idea it was but it makes sense now since it had only 8 tracks.
It was such a huge moment that it felt like an actual album. Even the promotional campaign and tour felt like a completely different concept.
And for the longest, I was considering The Fame Monster Gaga’s second album until I finally discovered it wasn’t. 😭
I think Tyler the Creator said it best. Folks released albums that they claimed put so much work and time into, but after a couple of months(or weeks) the album is forgotten by the artist. It depends on the artist but I have no problem extending the life of an album. Maybe it's a slow burn and the deluxe gives the fans a new perspective
I remember when deluxe albums came out the same time as the normal album, had a cool different cover and a few bonus tracks. Some of my fave tracks came from deluxe editions. Don’t know if I love deluxes being done months after the fact.
I think they’re done later now because labels aren’t investing into artists as much. So it’s almost like a reward to the artist to get to put the rest of those songs out. I actually don’t mind the deluxe coming out a few weeks/months later, it’s part of keeping the album rollout going.

Deluxe albums aren't more expensive to make, nor do they need more investment at all, the opposite in fact, which is why you have people like Tyla, Camila C, Megan, etc, releasing deluxe albums when their albums have bombed (not singles, just album sales).
The songs included on deluxe albums are songs that didn't make the cut the first time, it doesn't cost anything to throw them on a deluxe, since they were all already paid for.
The costs of a deluxe album are mainly the distribution costs which are instantly made back through as little as 1000 sales or less. This is why everyone and their co writers were releasing deluxe albums through the years.
The reason why deluxe albums died out is ONLY due to streaming, it has nothing to do with the labels.
Deluxe albums were an integral part before because they gave people incentive to buy them, therefore increasing the overall sales by a huge margin.
However, with the rise of streaming, there is no more incentive to go out and buy a deluxe album, when you can instead just stream the deluxe tracks from that album, and if the songs didn't make the cut on the album the first time, then obviously the artists and the label know the songs aren't gonna catch on or become hits. Instead, deluxe albums were mainly replaced with "region exclusive" albums that included one or two tracks that only sold in one part of the world, and the song tracks were not included on streaming due to that.

When was this though? Deluxe albums have rarely ever come out at the same time as the normal album from what I know of my music history. Back in the 60s-80s, sometimes it would take even a year or two before a deluxe album came out. I can’t speak on the 90s as much, so maybe that’s when you’re talking about, but in the 2000s-2010s most deluxes came out at least 3 months after the album did, some of them a good 6 months almost. Do you have some examples of deluxe albums in the past that came out almost immediately?

What’s desperate about trying to make art that people would enjoy and having multiple versions of it? unless you’re a recording artist people should just be quiet at some point. We can barely make enough change for a cup of coffee these days after investing money in mixing recording, mastering, vocal coaching, marketing… and that’s barely even the beginning. And that just has an independent artist if you sign to a major label are you going to debt for all of these things just to be successful even though it looks good on the outside all that glitters isn’t gold.
I think it’s that it no longer looks like more art, and more so like get more money.

i think deluxe albums are annoying, like the album should good itself without needing more, people should try to embody that, why not just do another album if you wanted to bring out new music? when you release an album sit with it and make singles from it before hopping onto making new songs that fans need to then buy the album again for.
I remember growing up only certain artists would drop one, Chris Brown has one for every album, Beyonce would do one every now and then. The only two Artists who’s gotten the deluxe right is Victoria Monet and Doja. I’m kinda tired of folks adding 1 to 3 songs. Like just make a ep or a whole new project. I actually prefer when artist waits a couple of months before releasing a deluxe. When an artist drops a deluxe during the first week the album came out, it’s over stimulating. Like give me some time to enjoy the album first. and i think that’s the issue. People are used to the next big thing and moving so fast to where they are not living in the moment and actually spending time with the album. Tinashe has mentioned this in a few of her interviews recently. The world is moving too fast. Appreciate what we have first and then put a deluxe out a few months later. We are moving on from projects too quickly in my opinion. And I LOVE anniversary deluxe albums

another reason for deluxe albums are an attempt to make up for losses on the original release - your record label expects 100k pure sales. if you don’t make that - the deluxe helps the label at least try to make up the loss in sales.

I miss good solid deluxe albums had plenty to sink ya teeth into. Ones where the cover was different so it felt like something of a deluxe. The art is being lost but hopefully picks up.

I think artists aren’t putting as much thought into how impactful b sides are. Its an afterthought until the b sides out perform the “ big hits” or even kinda dismantle what the album is a whole. So then its like okay lemme take what is in that vain and put it in the deluxe.
The last delux album I enjoyed was G eazys These things happen too and Dojas Scarlet I enjoy both versions so much. The deluxe just added the the experience. It didnt make the experience or create something different.

I agree with the Victoria Monet take. I wonder if her dragging this era out is maybe a sign of her fear of what’s next. The fact that it took her so long to pop off and this project was like her magnum opus. She want to capitalize and drag it out as much as possible because she feel like this era is where she finally got it right. I just hope that she trusts herself moving forward. While I’m not a huge fan, she’ll always be on my radar, especially as a performer.

2:55 I for one am actually for later deluxes. Please keep ups in your world as long as you can. I think the times (innovations, advancers and taste changes considered) have us consume a lot more of our music like midnight snacks and not Sunday meals. We want a quick tasty something that curbs a craving rather than a dish we been waiting on in anticipation where none of the fixings were skipped and hours and hours of love the lard have us savouring each bite and ready to reminisce it after we're done.

If Jaguar was supposed to be a 3 part EP series, but Jaguar 2 got delayed. I think it makes sense to tack on those last few tracks in the deluxe that would have made Jaguar 3. I feel like the deluxe is actually the rounding out/closing of the Jaguar era.

The music industry has changed. Artists can no longer drop an album - Then take a 2-5 year break and then come back to release another album - like in the past. It no longer works. It is all about streams and monthly listeners. Music has to be consistently released - Cardi B has only got 1 album, but the strategy of constantly releasing singles has worked very well for her to keep her relevant, in an evolving music industry. Album sales are no longer the only way to determine success - Streaming is free and I do feel sorry for these artists - But it is what is is. MASSIVE artists like Glorilla and Megan the Stallion are reporting low sales.

Deluxe albums blew up especially during Covid because now these albums are honestly trash. They want to prolong on projects and not give true blue music because of label obligations and lackluster fan support. It’s a cop out.

Fr im disappointed by the new tracks, they sound like her older title tracks but less good so the overall quality of her album has decreased. The thing about deluxe projects is that they used to really be DELUXE. Streaming really diminishes it to just a ADD A COUPLE NEW TRACKS cash grab. Deluxe albums before used to have new artwork, maybe you get a DVD of some behind the scenes, poster etc. It felt like something a fan and collector would want.
Yall over analyze EVERYTHING delux albums are extremely important for a number of reason. Some artists do it to capitalize off of the success of the original album, some do it to keep there names out there. some do it if the songs from the original album didn’t do to well and they want to experiment to see what’s the next sound they want to go into when transitioning into a new era. The problem is the quality of music has went down bc labels are not investing into artists like they did before streaming. Songs simply are not good anymore or at least worth buying, most of us will just stream it. Us not really buying music anymore really has hurt the quality of music

Beyoncé with B'Day revived the album, made two new hits and warmed up the tour. when you think of B'Day you think of the deluxe edition always. and Rihanna with Good Girls Gone Bad Reloaded, that for me cemented her as a real force musically. 2 #1 song out of that one reissued. legendary.

An example of a good deluxe ablum is Alec Benjamin's 16 Notes. I feel like the songs he added fit perfectly with the original ablum and it kinda sounds songs that could've been on it at first. He released 12 Notes at the beginning of May, did some promo, announced his tour, and then dropped his deluxe verison. It's the opposite of desperation, it's genius.

Yeah I kinda think the opposite of this especially for Victoria. Her deluxe was an extension of the story she was singing on that album. It just wouldn’t make sense elsewhere and making it an EP is in a way still creating a new storyline and i would consider THAT doing too much.

Victoria's deluxe was perfect because it was sonically in line with the OG project AND gave that era an official ending. I would rather wait months/a full year if it's going to be on the level hers was on. Ty;er's was on the same level. I enjoyed Doja's as well because the songs added more depth to her as an artist who wants to be viewed in the rap lane.
This is somewhat outside of this conversation but I also like when rap artists and producers release a Deluxe edition that has the instrumentals of the OG album.

I’m going to say something controversial but the reason there is an increase of deluxe projects is Taylor Swift.
