UPDATE: We received a 2020 YT Decoy and have tested it on our home trails and as part of our 2020 eMTB Roundup. The new Decoy features some small changes that make it much better, namely the updates to the Shimano Steps firmware and an updated shock tune.
After several months of testing on some of Southern California's rockiest and roughest trails, we shot this video to showcase the YT Decoy e-bike and share our impressions compared to many other e-bikes we've been testing at theloamwolf.com
And be sure to check out YT's website here: bit.ly/2V5vwAY Спорт
Thanks for the review, When reviewers talk about suspension being harsh, too plush etc, it always blows my mind as especially with this fox set up its can be dialled to be exactly as you wish, poppy and playful, grounded and planted. Volume tokens, air pressure and compression adjustments see to that.
Yep...pretty laughable tbh.
Yes, so yes.
Great review, definitely clears up the confusion about how the bike rides
Thank you Tyrel.
This review is pretty spot on to my experience. I was one of the first people to get one. I was very very dissapointed with the heavy feeling, braking, corning, playing let alone popping. BUT after lots and lots of miles I've adjusted my riding and can now I can make this bike hop all kinds of stuff. I love how planted it is when plowing, but I also love to jump. It is so damn stable in the air, which I love. But I had to muscle up and improve my timing a lot to get it to jump ok
@@mattx4253 mine is 25 kilos
I have the same experience. Have you tried adding volume spacers?
Great review. You guys got to ride the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay. I rode one up in Tahoe yesterday and it is fantastic. The motor placement does not compromise the kinematics. The 48Volt and 682 WH battery have tremendous range. The motor is nearly silent except for some minor chain guide noise. Power delivery is silky smooth...better than Brose. I really think you guys would be well served to get a hold of one. I don't own an e bike yet but this has jumped to the top of my list.
Nice thanks for the input Scott! We've got a brand new Rocky Powerplay coming and it's gonna be a good one!
@@TheLoamWolf That is great news. I hope it's the Altitude. I'm also interested in the 2020 Kenevo as Rob Rides says it's his new favorite and even with the triple clamp it handles well on the tight twisty trails. I'm interested in the geometron G1 longer slacker geometry as well as Nikolai G1 EBOXX. I'm NOT in love with the Bosch motor or control as there's been some reports of chattering or clanking noises from the bottom bracket when descending.
Let’s see one of the Commencal ebikes! :)
Did you play with the rear shock spacing to add mid stroke ?
How much high and low speed rebound dampening do you guys generally run front and rear .
What sag % where you running or what rode best .
interesting the second review is so different to the first one.. I'm interested to know how long you actually test these bikes for?
We had this bike for about 3.5/4 months. Drew spent a bit more time on the bike than Chilidog did. We had very similar experiences on the bike in fact, we just tried to word it a bit differently. We both really like the bike but believe it has some very definite shortcomings when compared to our favorites.
Decoy is the best bike for the money. Best looking too.
Great review Would like to know your thoughts in comparison to the Trek rail ? I'm looking at the 9.8
Such a sick bike! 😫
It's pretty cool for sure.
Great review with some interesting insights. I'm surprised YT haven't released an updated version for 2020 like other manufacturers have. I still love the look of this bike though!
It does look pretty sharp, we agree!
I love my Decoy pro race
Richard Norwood how long does it take to charge from almost dead
Have you tested 2020 Orbea Wild FS? I highly recommend!!
it’s an awesome powerful and stable bike!!
I'm waiting for Shimano to come out with their new more powerful motor, and I'm hoping by next yrs model they will have the bigger battery and buy this bike, definitely sounds like the bike that is made for me!
Agree. We've lately been riding more and more non-Shimano ebikes and they are falling behind in terms of power.
629mm reach on a large? Looks like that’s the stack height measurement. According to geometry geeks the reach on the large is 455 mm
Yep, I quickly paused when they said that because I have an XL model and my reach is 475mm (629mm might fit an NBA player)
Good review of the bike, But you accidentally said the reach is 629mm which is the stack height. The reach on a large is 455mm. Was able to test one and it was super playful and the xxl large fit me the best out of all others I've been on.
UGHHH!! Thank you for catching that. We try to keep all these numbers straight! Sometimes we mess up. Sorry
Out of curiosity, do you change the high and low speed compression/rebound to suite your riding taste? I'm currently debating a YT decoy or a trek rail 9. The thought of it being wollowy puts me off it a bit. I don't want to have to hold out until the 2020 demo days 🤦🏻♂️😂
Hey Ricky, yes we definitely did quite a bit of tuning as so many others don't seem to have the issues we've noticed. We just got a Trek Rail 9.9 in and built up a couple days ago so we can't compare the rides just yet, but will have a review of that coming soon.
Thanks
The Loam Wolf m
would you recommend this bike for me as my first ebike I have sb150 and want something similar in geo and riding, maybe 2020 Narco Norco Sight VLT 29 or maybe you tried 2020 Cannondale Moterra SE i always like a bit slacker bikes so not sure, hard desition to what to take? also in my list 2020 Merida one sixty, Trek rail, Commencal, Kenevo, just don't have a chance to test it just from reviews. thanks
very happy with mine in the uk . you said 629 for reach , its actually 455 . i went up a size from what i usually get , my height 6'1 (went for xl )
Sorry for that, so many numbers to keep straight! Thanks for catching the error.
@@TheLoamWolf Just a correction . I know how pedantic some of us get about figures .Good review though, interesting to get a view from across the pond.
I also run mine in the high setting . Works better for me . Less pedal strike , and easier climbing .
Its a good jumper. Found it more playful than the devinci. Of course its more planted than the vlt or levo , it has 15mm more travel on the rear and 10mm more up front than the levo/9er fork compared to the vlt
Did you compare it to the new 2020 Devinci DC? There 2020 lineup is drastically improved from 19.
@@TheLoamWolf no sorry i should have said 2019. Angles and chainstay length seem the same for the 2020 though. Maybe im missing something
This is an accurate review, I rode my 2021 decoy for 4 rides now. I got through the travel by only doing 3 foot jumps. It is definitely plush, which I do like. But I wonder if this will be a problem once I start hitting bigger stuff. I wonder if volume spacers will help.
For sure they will help. Install a bigger reducer and you’ll be happier.
@@TheLoamWolf thanks bud. I really dig your reviews and presentation style. Keep the winning format.
Thanks very much! We’re always taking feedback and input from viewers on how to improve so we appreciate it b
2020 kenevo please ...be great for you to test one
WE got one and are set to begin testing this weekend, can't wait to get it dirt!
The Loam Wolf .....Brilliant ...will look forward to that ....👍🇬🇧
How does the Shimano drive compare to Bosch? The fat down tube looks dorky, I’d just go with a normal down tube with a better mounted on it, plus with that configuration you can swap batteries more easily.
It is underpowered big time. The more we ride the Gen 4 Bosch stuff the more we realized Shimano needs to speed up their development.
The Loam Wolf I wouldn’t be surprised if Shimano drops ebike components. Besides, Shimano needs to work on making amends with dealers, not developing new categories.
hm... it's a 2019 bike. 90% of the 2019 bikes have a 500wh battery. I dont see the downside on that. Only the 10'000$ levo has the 700wh battery.
2020 is a different story. Most of the new bosch bikes will have the 625wh battery.
700wh is and will be at least for the next 3 to 4 years the maximum, if you dont want an unnecesserly heavy bike!
Which Bike Stand ist this?
Did you try the high flip chip setting? Makes quite a bit of difference. Gets rid of the floppy, heavy feel of the steering and generally livens up the bike.
Yes we experimented with both settings and although it did help, still didn't quite put it up on level with others in terms of lively/poppiness.
The Loam Wolf to be fair at launch it was described as an assisted Capra rather than the expected Jeffs-E. it’s definitely an enduro rather than a trail bike like the Levo.
@@eckythump6429 True and very valid. However we've also been riding the new Kona Remote, which is also an enduro, and the new Devinci DC is a 150 bike, and they're a bit better at getting off the ground. Don't get us wrong, we still like the Decoy. We're just trying to get the most info out to people looking to spend their hard earned dollars so they can make the best decision they can.
The Loam Wolf not sure you can expect a 165mm travel, DH shocked bike to be as poppy as 150mm bikes with trail shocks. Maybe you should demo one of the Decoys with a Delux or DPX shock to see how that compares👍🏼
@@TheLoamWolf honestly (I don't know your channel) for it sounds like that you trying to talk down the bike as much as possible.
Just collecting information on what bike to get for the next season and watching and reading so many channels and opinions, and this review sounds very bought to me.
Like in a car commercial you are constantly telling that the other product is better and with an argument I only found in your review.
All other reviews, printed, videos commercial and non commercial state exactly the opposite.
This feels really strange. 🤷♂️
what about reach in ebikes ? new Metas 2020 large have re=485, isn't that too much for an ebike ? i guess you have a lot of stability from more weight (and lower centre of gravity), is it a risk that longer bike will make handling more cumbersome ? currently i have Transition Patrol (re=475), i'm not sure if moving to ebike, that's even longer is a good idea ? (for fast straight tracks yes).
What do you think about reach in ebikes ? should we expect a bit different geo coz bike is a bit different as well ... ?
You know what, that's not something we've really thought about consciously but have felt on the trail! Great point. Yes, we believe that super long reaches will affect being able to lift, pull and maneuver heavy ebikes around. The concept of forward weight distribution and stability being increased by long reaches on traditional bikes isn't quite an issue because the extra weight of ebikes inherently makes them more stable and better at finding traction in the corners... It will be interesting to see where the industry goes in terms of ebike geo! We definitely hope for higher bbs and/or shorter cranks! 162.5mm you heard it here first! haha.
New Metas are a bit all over the place. 2020 SX = 485mm, 2020 Team = 475mm, 2020 Ride = 458mm. Commencal is a bit French in their attention to detail though. When I bought the 2020 Ride it had the Team geo posted on the website. I was initially certain that I would return it, but after watching the EMBN vid on Fabian Barel's Canyon ON, I'm a bit conflicted. In the video he basically states that the extra stability provided by the motor/battery allowed him to downsize bikes and regain some of that playful flick ability that was missing from his XL Spectral.
@@SoDiezl350 SX is 27.5", re=485,
team is 29", a bit shorter, yes, re=475
and Ride (external battery!) is a frame from previous years (same geo)
@@SoDiezl350 wow, so something i was thinking about.
(and about different Metas, probably they just 'repackage' metas 2018 and 2019 as 2020 lower specced :/ ? )
What the charging time on it
Taking notes 📝
What size this decoy?
Replace the Float X2 with the X and BAM you got your POP!!!
That bike has the x2 on it.
Think you have something there. Cannot say I’m particularly enamoured with the X2 on it.
Whoop!!
Was considering this bike, as an owner of 2016 YT Jeffsy I appreciate playfulness and springiness of the YT bikes. 2 bad this ain't got none of that, think I'll skip it.
bullshit , try it out! its what you make it.
I can only say that other reviews come to the total opposite conclusion.
This one felt kinda bought.
I awas mentioning over and over the two other bikes.
Like a cheap car salesperson. 🤷♂️
@@rakete111 Agreed! Always recommend trying out bikes for your local terrain and riding style. Nobody rides the same or has the same expectations on the trail. So you may love it. We've ridden enough other bikes to have some we prefer. And no we're not paid to say that.
Sorry you feel that way but your suspicion should turn 180-degrees on that. See how much brands advertise on those sites you don't think are cheap car salesmen. Don't bite the hand that feeds.
Does anyone know where these trails are in CA?
Might be San Clemente Dog Park
Looks like the Whiting Ranch and Saddleback Mountain area to me. Chance that it could also be Chino State Park outside of Yorba Linda.
629mm reach ???? (or TT)
629mm stack height . tt is 611 , reach 455
@@NathanMorgan1976 Thank you! We blew it...
Correction- 64.5 /65 HA

We have one on the way and hope to get some time on it soon!

@@lllenni1106 honestly didn't know that, thank you 😱🙏
@@schloOnzo yes we actually called YT during the test as we saw both those numbers and wanted to make sure we were right. Good eye!
@@TheLoamWolf thanks 🙃
65 hta?? Haha. Same as a deng spur or ripley af haha
Hopefully I’ll never need electric motor assistance seems weird kinda. Been riding and raced since the early 80’s on bikes
Well, "need" is sort of relative... In the 80's you didn't need suspension to ride your mountain bike either. Yet, you probably aren't riding a rigid singlespeed without a dropper post and rim brakes are you? Technology changes, advancements happen. No need to fight it. Embrace fun.
Terrible review, not even sure he rode the bike. Would have been good to see people who actually shred ride it.
