Cleaning up your preflop to fold or 3 bet in these spots is one of the simplest adjustments you can make. Also remember you're not incentivized to play marginal hands to very large opens (especially out of position ... even if a whale is involved)

3b or fold 100%. But I would have folded the river without reads. I have only seen once someone bluff raise me here once in my poker career and it was because I induced it. This raise is just about always value. And yes they will do this with AK despite the board at low stakes.

@@moneymikz I was present at the time this hand was played. So many players at this game easily call a three bet with this hand - and worse holdings. That's why the game is so great. Recently, I witness a guy call 2/4 diamonds to a $185 four bet heads up. He then called $450 on a two diamond 833 flop. Hero checks the turn when the diamond comes in. Villian bets $700. The hero (a guy who doesn't like to fold) is holding KK with the king of diamonds, he tanks for a minute, obviously doesn't love the bet but makes the call. Villian begs for business, but unfortunately for villian this guy never runs it twice. Not the diamond but K hits the river. Villian flips out shows his 2/4 diamonds.

In 3 bet pots when you have AK, you are the agressor, and you flop an Ace on a relatively dry board (unless opponent has QhKh), you are VERY strong so checking back for deception allows the opponent to try and catch up so you can extract max value. In this case, it worked flawlessly because caller had AT. If the opponent had QK suited or QJ suited, allowing them to try and turn a straight draw (or pair up) gives them a false sense of security. It's the ONE time that you should slow play AK in a head's up pot in my opinion, but I'm not a pro :)

3-bets preflop at low stakes (especially $1/$3) are almost always for value with top notch premium hands (JJ+/AK). And after the flop at those stakes, when you make a bet to show strength and it gets raised, on any street but especially on the river its virtually never a bluff. People at those levels are either only thinking about their own cards and betting for absolute value and/or are afraid any bluff they make if someone is already showing strength will get called down because most people at these stakes aren't able to really make laydowns of decent to good hands. The nanosecond the river bet got raised, i knew there was zero chance that AT was good. Beating low stakes like that is really just playing safe ABC poker, just dont bluff and bet big when you have it and fold when they act like they do even if your hand is fairly strong, it may be boring and luck reliant but that's the way it is until you get to higher stakes and start facing other thinking players.

range theory does not make sense, either. "protecting betting range"?? protecting what and against who? "Knowing" opponent's whole array of cards (so-called "range") won't help you at the end to make decision, anyway. V either has an A or he does not. Even with the A in his hand, what's his kicker??? Range theory does no anticipate K in V hand. AK-J array would not play the hand the way V played. {Period}. So: relying on THAT theory is like leaning on paper wall, hoping it's going to hold your a$$.

I ended up 3bet jamming the river and he snap called and showed me A 7. I probably can't fold but maybe I shouldn't raise an OMC without the nuts, even though it's ridiculously hard for him to have A 7.

Could the button check on the flop be a giveaway to his hand strength? .
Example: a player (Q4o) call my (AK) 3-bet pre flop. Then donk-bet and called my flop raise (AK6). Then check-called pot size bet on turn (J). Then rivered a straight (T)!! Went all in. Entire table jumped up in disbelief when he flipped over his hole cards. ohhh, well.

4 bet solves this problem. If he called the 4 bet, you know it's a premium. Removes HJ (who folded anyway, but hero didn't know that pre 3 bet). So a call of 4 bet by last to act, in this case the button, heavily weighs toward premium starting hand. JJ + and AK, possibly suited face cards. With the flop and turn, and player has called a pot sized raise, heavily favors an Ace. So raise on river is almost certainly a boat, AK, or very worst, AQ.
