Great stuff Patrick, quality demo and review as usual. The inclusion of HP and LP filters is just the icing on top, they act to really tighten and focus things. Another genius offering from our Darkglass friends in Finland.
So I already bought a Sage Green Jazz Bass and put quarter pounders in it cuz of this channel.. Now I want that Squier Troy Sanders and that Ibanez sounds great too.. Damn you Patrick
I sold my dg x7 a week ago like a dumb a** however I WILL be buying it back this weekend didn't realize how much I would miss that pedal...great reviews by the way, keep up the good work!!
You really dug deep into this one and answered all my questions. This is the ultimate preamp pedal. But I say that every time darkglass makes something new...
Hey Patrick, if someone were to run this as an always on pedal, do you think the low comp is sufficient compression enough for the overall signal, or if someone has a compression pedal they like should they plan on using both?
Always enjoy the creations Doug and his team put out. What's anyone's opinion on this lacking a blend knob? That's one particular element that gravitates me towards Darkglass products is the blend functionality. Can that be achieved somewhat from tasteful mixing of the low comp and high level/drive? Thanks for the demo Patrick, great job as always appreciate your time and effort.
Hey Patrick, odd there are so many haters commenting on your videos these days. As always great demo, I know your videos are probably sponsored by the companies you demo but it would be nice to hear your criticisms or things you dont like about these pedals.
I would still split the signal and keep a compressed DI track of the same part in the mix. Adjust the EQ on both tracks so they’re not sharing frequencies. You could do the same thing with a plugin like Manmoth or the NeuralDSP stuff, get 2 signals recorded and adjust them in the box. Still, this would probably sound better if you dial in a great clean fundamental tone…
What are the settings of the Microtubes 500 you are using for this demo? Great demo of the pedal and what it can do, but could you note the amps settings?
Love the sound of this pedal with your Gibson Grabber bass. The pedal works in a similar way as the EBS Billy Sheehan Drive, some nice extra features though!
Awesome video! Made me decide I need this pedal now. Was wondering though, what's the setup for the green Jazz Bass 4 string? I've got a 5 String Jazz Active Deluxe and I can't seem to get that clanky high end out of it that you have here.
Sorry for the late answer, he's using Seymour Duncan pickups on his Green Jazz Bass, but i don't remember which model of seymour duncan he haves on his bass.
“Extremely unique”..... I mean tech 21 already did the dug pedal and the dark glass website says the idea is an old recording technique.... still sounds great
It's unique to have it in a small pedal. It is an old recording technique but it took a lot more to achieve it than stepping on a footswitch. It's different from the dUg pedal because you can select your crossover frequencies. So it is unique.
Are you using a Truetone 1 Spot Power Supply like you have listed in the description or have you upgraded to something else? I own one but was wondering if i should get something better if I decide to pickup an X7.
This is really weird, even with very good headphones, every setting, every bass and every distortion sounds the same ... And not only here with this pedal ! I suspect RUclips upload lowers bass sound quality, which sounds flat and undefined in the end ...
I agree! Apart from added lows according to instrument used, exactly same fizz all the time until you dial it out a bit. Obviously a "go to" fizz for some bassists
I enjoy how the Darkglass pedals sound. This one sounds as good as all the others. But I've only ever heard them in controlled recorded context. I'm primarily a live player so I wonder if in a live environment when you're trying to hear yourself on stage as well as pop through the mix if your sound just disappears..? I'd love to hear a front of house video using a Darkglass pedal but have yet to find one.
If you set the pedal right it will absolutely cut through. Generally finding the sweet spot in the upper mid range is key since a lot of the time finding a spot above the guitars frequency wise is what makes you cut in a mix with guitars.
Everyband Ive seen live who uses some sort of DG I can hear the bass clearly and it sound amazing. Then I never got a chance to use mine live but when I was jamming with a full band for a short time I ran direct and was able to cut through and it sounded great
I used a B7K ultra in a band I was in for about 35 shows. I always got compliments on how clear and articulate my bass sounded in the mix from audience members after we would finish our set. Finding the right spot for the blend knob is what really matters as far as cutting through the mix.
IS THIS AN ALPHA OMEGA? CHECKing OUT THE COMMENTS BELOW. I commented previously that this is getting more and more cloudy differentiating the variations in the pedals that DG is making. I am an Alpha O owner and yea I really like the pedal but cmon. Can you help us?
This is probably the best overdrive pedal I've heard so far because for me it's more of a grit than it is Distortion or fuzz, I bought the boss ODB 3 and I was pretty disappointed with the type of distortion it gets its really fizzy but what I like is that it keeps the low end but I'm looking for more of a grit sound than I am Distortion or fuzz and this pedal hit the spot perfectly but I'm pretty sure the price doesn't hit the spot
I use my odb3 as a boost for my clean sound now. I have the gain set to 1 o clock and have the blend dialled to just where the overdrive effect is about to kick in. The EQ on the odb3 is great I think. But yeah, the X7, money damn well spent!
Good stuff, although your riffs are sounding the same in all your distortion pedal demos. Then again there’s so much you can do in 12 keys and an octave lmao. Keep it up, I mean it.
i appreciate the effort, although no sensible mix engineer would mix bass in a song like this a more comprehensive demo should have a) how it affects the input and output signal when set at different levels, and b) how well it still sounds when rolling off highs. this is fundamental.
Lol, I made the X-men reference on there. I think I still like the Alpha-Omega better. I plan on using the regular X to make things brighter and harsher. Like a better B3K, which is how I see this pedal. My other favorite is the Tech21 Oxford, which sounds warm and has a lot of grunt. Maybe Orange's new pedal will replace that one. What do you guys use?? The low gain parts around 8:20 sound nice, though.
I mean, I dont disagree that a lot of their pedals sound similar, but who cares? Just dont buy it if you dont want it. But honestly in a band mix you probably wouldnt hear much of a difference between them.
I used to love Darkglass but everything they've put out recently has been a rehash or a money grab. I'd like to see them use some of the innovative ideas the company started with and come up with something new that isn't a distortion. Another thing is the Darkglass distortion sound is so overused in metal recordings nowadays that its gotten boring for me to hear it on records... I miss the sound of a real bass amp mic'd up
Wish he wouldn't just use a pick - picking is fine, but every single demo video I've seen they only use a pick. I want to see how it sounds digging in with fingerstyle
That's because of 2 (I think) factors: 1- He (or the pedal) scoops the shit of those mids; 2- The effected signal is blended way too high leaving no space for the actual sound of the instrument; Or a combination of these.
Of course, Patrick has the first, most useful and comprehensive demo of the soon to be legendary, MTX7
Man... with every new video you post I fall more and more inlove with both your Gibson basses... Tone Heaven!!!
That Ripper loves darkglass stuff! Immense tones always
I love all basses with thin rock maple bodies. Serrated high-mids.
Great stuff Patrick, quality demo and review as usual. The inclusion of HP and LP filters is just the icing on top, they act to really tighten and focus things. Another genius offering from our Darkglass friends in Finland.
Love your demos! This pedal is absolutely face melting.
So I already bought a Sage Green Jazz Bass and put quarter pounders in it cuz of this channel.. Now I want that Squier Troy Sanders and that Ibanez sounds great too.. Damn you Patrick
I've been watching this video at least once a week because this tone just makes me wanna headbang my hear through a wall!
I sold my dg x7 a week ago like a dumb a** however I WILL be buying it back this weekend didn't realize how much I would miss that pedal...great reviews by the way, keep up the good work!!
Great stuff ;)
It was a damn nightmare for me to decide the footage.. So many options...
I love how you attack the bass from the 1st second.
Great demo! Sounds awesome \m/
Awesome as usual man! 👍
Great pedal! Thank you for the video!
Great review man! I have never used pedals but now I am definitely interested...
Great Video, Patrick. No BS here.

great job as always appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks for the insight Doug, much appreciated! Can't wait to pick one up.
Hey Patrick, odd there are so many haters commenting on your videos these days. As always great demo, I know your videos are probably sponsored by the companies you demo but it would be nice to hear your criticisms or things you dont like about these pedals.
I legitemately had goosebumps in my ear holes because of that tone
I would still split the signal and keep a compressed DI track of the same part in the mix. Adjust the EQ on both tracks so they’re not sharing frequencies. You could do the same thing with a plugin like Manmoth or the NeuralDSP stuff, get 2 signals recorded and adjust them in the box. You’re really making me want a Ripper. Cheers
if I have pedal alpha omicron would be more ideal I buy a microtubes x7 to have a mix of timbres, or have an alpha omega ultra?
What are the settings of the Microtubes 500 you are using for this demo? Great demo of the pedal and what it can do, but could you note the amps settings?
So what is the difference between this one and the X cheaper version? (I have a dbx compressor already)
That power supply is regulated?
Love the sound of this pedal with your Gibson Grabber bass. The pedal works in a similar way as the EBS Billy Sheehan Drive, some nice extra features though!
How does the X7 feel compared to the Alpha Omega Ultra? Is the X7 also a preamp like the AOU?
Awesome video! Made me decide I need this pedal now. Was wondering though, what's the setup for the green Jazz Bass 4 string? I've got a 5 String Jazz Active Deluxe and I can't seem to get that clanky high end out of it that you have here.

Killer sounding pedal. \m/

hi patrick !! how are you? One question ... can I get the bass sound of the band Overkill with the X7?
how it sound as a compressor di alone?
What kind of explorer styled bass is that?
would you still recommend an additional compressor pedal? Great demo btw!
I would. Run it first to even up and increase the level before hitting the distortion.
Sweet. Now I just need to restrain myself. I still love my Alpha Omega.... but this!
Sterling Ray // Fender mim
Favorite bass???
Great demo 5:03 is just magic :*
This is really weird, even with very good headphones, every setting, every bass and every distortion sounds the same ... And not only here with this pedal !

I heard someone that use B3K with a Sansamp and that was insane to me

It's much better for comparison if they sound similar
Not.......for the sound......but sure for your Play 👍🏻💪🏻
That opening riff is TIGHT.
So much tone sculpage
10 minutes of Darkglass. Ok I'm down.

Another $300+ distortion pedal that sounds damn near identical to their others

I've got a B7k ultra, it doesn't sound much different, certainly not worth the upgrade(downgrade).
Sounds like the B7k, bummer.
How about doing a demo with the pedal without a pick? 😂🤔
In my opinion DarkGlass pedals are useless if you want to play with fingers
@@anonymouswolvenclaw536 I'd recommend you expand your vague pallette of skill and taste then 😏
@@RockinRedneck09 haha ...
Wish he wouldn't just use a pick - picking is fine, but every single demo video I've seen they only use a pick. I want to see how it sounds digging in with fingerstyle
Lol. Every bass sounds equal. 🤔

Dark glass has a similar “baked in” sound across a lot of their pedals.
