Hal deciding to stay back is also good development for him. He standing his ground shows no matter how bad things are for him, he still protects people. Just like David he’s a good man at heart, and when things get ruff he does everything he can for the greater good.

Her dying was the more impactful ending. there are no happy endings in this world and her living ruined the fourth game. she should have died

This was the first ending I got. It was awesome to get this ending and saving the day.
I got the Otacon ending first which rewards you with Otacon's stealth gear instead of the Bandanna. I thought about going through the game again but instead I just watched this on youtube.
It was the worse ending. Her dying was more impactful. Hated the fact her living was cannon !

Then we would have to worry about some asshole trying to make an unauthorized sequel. The new rule #1 in fiction is to kill off your main characters... cuz if you dont someone else will do it for you (see: Star Wars). Im glad they tied up Snakes story with a bow in MGS4

Man, I was born in 1983 now thinking about this video game growing up to it before tablets existed smart phones. Everything was about big old televisions two televisions arcade games now we got Xbox PlayStation still around but the PlayStation one and playing this game when I was, I think 13 years old brings back a lot of memoriesnow it’s 2024 now I’m 41 so I wish I can go back and just enjoy my childhood memories again being an adult you gotta worry about bills and responsibilities but thanks for sharing this video man. I really appreciate you sharing classic video games brings back childhood moments.
Both endings are quite good. I can see both sides to which is better.
I agree, both endings have good points, but I think that the Otacon ending is best for building their relation through the series, I just don't like how they rub Meryl's fate in your face throughout the game in Otacon's ending.
@@halierlockehart Personally, I prefer the Meryl ending, but you are definitely right when you say that the the sequels successfully build upon Otacon and Snake’s relationship. I think those two work together so well in future games, I agree Otacon’s ending in MGS1 works better canonically. I actually just finished MGS4 for the first time a few days ago, and I really dislike what they did to Meryl’s character arc. Whereas, Otacon’s ending in MGS4 helps re-emphasize how important he is to Snake and to documenting his legacy.
@@williamdancer5649 So, I too will say that I prefer the Meryl ending but mostly because of what I said about the game rubbing her death in your face and going full depressing because of that in the Otacon ending. Nonetheless, I give both endings 9/10 because they're both that good :)

Even after all this time the ending of MGS1 makes me cry every time from the music to the voice acting no matter how dated it is I will always and Solid Snake will always be my hero because he always got me through a lot tough times and Taught me to Pass on good values to next generation

I watched by brother play mgs first before I played it myself, he got the Meryl death originally. Back then we didn’t know the torture part is what seals Meryl’s fate whether she lives or dies. On his second or third play (and after I had also played it) he managed to resist the torture so she he got to the end we were both watching and expecting her head to tilt back (I always hated that she died, or at least from what we thought) and then when her head suddenly moved forward, followed by her arm raising up we were both happily surprised

I remember it took me years to find that this ending existed I always gave up during the ocelot torture room scene and always got the otacon ending lol 😆 🙃 😅 it's actually hard to beat the room torture 😭 but finally did it way years laters lol

Damn, this end is actually kind of a tear jerker watching it again after two decades. Naive meryl in over her head, cowardly otacon's moment of heroism, and I didnt notice it til just now but Snake never mentions to Naomi the truth about gray fox, despite the fact that he could've twisted the knife on her decision to sabotage him.
Im always picking up new things this many years later. Great series

I had to click submit, because half way through I realized I had to mash O, so I only managed to get through 2 phases with having 10% of health, so I had no choice but to submit
Played mgs1 like 20 times or more, never knew you could save her, now i am pissed, but i was just a kid, now i want this to be remade so i could play both ending.
it's already been remade look up Twin Snakes. It's a GameCube exclusive but supposedly it might be in the next MGS collection

Remember back when Snake had good character development and decided to become a new man and spend his life with Meryl and went through hell for her?
Kojima apparently doesn’t remember and ruins it by destroying this story in later games and crams down mediocre Big Boss games (aside from MGS3.) Sorry Kojima you going on claiming Snake had no real feelings because he’s a clone is a load of bullshit, if that’s true then what the hell was all that we saw back in MGS1?
Snake was clearly mourning over Meryl (if you chose to let her die) and beat himself over her death, actually felt guilty over seeing Meryl getting shot and claimed that he pushed her too hard when she wasn’t ready for real combat. He even went out of his way to keep her from killing herself by force thanks to Mantis. (Yet Mantis had the gall to claim Snake is worse then him which was also a load of bullshit.)
And there’s also the time Snake was so considerate and sympathetic towards Naomi that he decided not to tell her the truth about Gray Fox killing her parents knowing it would destroy her and knew Gray Fox was the only family she had and was so alone all her life. Instead lied to her because he cares about her feelings. He was even rather comforting towards Raiden during MGS2 and gave him a positive message at the end of the game.
Look MGS3 was fun and gave Big Boss a little more depth even though it didn’t explain his villainy. Honestly Solid Snake is the one that is far more fleshed out than Big Boss, he has way more character and was three dimensional and I’ll go as far to say Solid Snake is a far better written character than Big Boss. Even after all of what we saw in the past of Solid Snake you wanna tell me Big Boss is more human than Solid Snake and Snake has no feelings, all because what? He cries?
No Kojima you’re wrong about Solid Snake and you’re full of crap, no Kojima, you might be willing to forget who Snake really is as a character but I played past Metal Gear games I’m not forgetting about that.
Again MGS3 was good but still doesn’t explain how he turns evil and neither did the sequels after MGS3 which were all very mediocre and served just to convolute and ruin the story opening up so many retcons and plot holes up the rear ended that the story makes no sense anymore. With that I said I’m glad Kojima is gone and hopefully MGS4 can get retconned because that game to me was really bad.

MGS3 itself is pretty bad too, hopefully someone can write a better continuation of MGS2 now that Kojima is gone
I jsut finished this game on an emulator but accidentally deleted my save switching to disk two. Fortunately I was able to find a save for the start of disk two, unfortunately i lost access to the Meryl ending.

I survived the torture but wasted the ketchup and decided to reload a sabe. This time I accidentally pressed Select and gave up, but given how I didn't get a Game Over I just kept going, not knowing this would kill Meryl 😢

LMFAO the exact same thing happened to me literally just now.
I beat Sniper Wolf and went down the stairs, then realized I didn't have any saves because I had been using save states instead for the most part.
I ended up downloading a save so I could continue, was completely confused as to why Meryl died even though I strained my hand going doing the torture shit and then face palmed when I realized it was because of the save I downloaded.
I wish the game would have shown where Meryl is and what happened to during game play

He sure did live i don't think in the end Naomi wanted to infect snake to kill him i think after snake crippled her brother grey fox she wanted her revenge but during shadow moses she saw the other side of snake a man who cares about his friends i think Naomi knew snake would die at some point but at another time drebin injects old snake with the upgraded fox die which would kill off big mama ocolet and big boss the reason snake has such advanced ageing is because he's a clone and because of the original fox die virus in snake in mgs1 Naomis message to snake whether u been progammed or is not important the important thing is u choose life and live snake she wants him to survive no matter what even through he ended up cripping her brother she did wish harm on him I think she knew there paths would meet again this game brings me to tears the music everything
Instead of age acceleration they should made age deaccelaration since they were clones.
They wanted soldiers in prime. Tools. They also rendered them sterile to prevent them creating more clones. Big boss was in his 50s which is pretty old for cells. They don't magically reset to 0. It'd be like 70 at age 20.

maybe I'm just dumb, but this ending confuses me. I got the otacon ending originally, but when meryl showed up in mgs4 I was very confused. I found that this is the canon ending, but that just leads to the question of how did otacon get off of shadow moses? meryl is the canon ending, yet otacon is in 2 and 4, and meryl is in 4? it doesn't really make sense to me.

Also, looks like Snake can bounce back from trauma pretty fast.
I guess I can say the only thing I liked about this ending is that I survived the torture.
Why can't there be an ending in which Snake escapes with both - and we still get to hear what Otacon has to say in his ending.

The Otacon ending doesn't make sense when they get to the snowmobile, he's way to chuckley after he just got done losing his mind over getting Meryl killed

Thats me and my girlfriend. She calls me her romantic name. God made change in her life and decide get back in church, avoid people tries cause trouble and get me back. She went through judgement of God and didn't want experience it again. She is happy I'm back with her. God delivered me day after me and her got back together. You'll always find peace in God and my peace is healed. It's life I wanted to have.

It was easy for me once I found out a good tactic for spamming and that there is a few seconds after he stops electrocuting you where you can still recover strength which goes a long way. I wish this was the case in Peace Walker
