    26. HARDSHIPS AND DAWAH
    [00:01] Islam is for everyone
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى says in the Quran, "وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ - And we have not sent you (Muhammad ﷺ) except as a mercy to the worlds" (21:107) and "قُلْ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا - Say Oh Muhammad (ﷺ), Indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you all" (7:158). This refers to all of the worlds out there, every creation including malaika (angels), Jinn and Insaan (humans). This is an important aspect of our religion that Prophethood of Rasulullah Muhammad ﷺ is not bound to time, place, race, people, NO! From the time that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى chose to reveal the message to Rasulullah ﷺ till the day of judgement, Arab, Ajam, white, black, Asian, African, European, wherever you maybe, this is the ummah of Rasulullah ﷺ.
    [01:45] Types of Ummah
Ummah is of two types: Ummah Al Da'wah which is Ummah of invitation which includes everyone who we have to call towards the message. The second type is called Ummah Al Ijabah which is comprised of the people that accept the message. So we are the ummah of Rasulullah ﷺ meaning we submit, أَسْلَمَ‎ to the will and order of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى willingly. Then there is the ummah that did not accept the message like the kuffar, the mushrikeen but the acceptance of this message is an obligation on all of mankind so they have to accept.
[02:42] Believing in your heart and acting it out are two different things
Every language has it's own unique characteristics. In Arabic there's lisaan maqal and lisaan haal. Lisaan maqal is from the tongue, a statement which you make by words, by saying something. Lisaan Haal is a statement made from your actions, from what you do, what you see. Many of the Ummah today will say yes to following the Prophet ﷺ, him being the last messenger but Lisaan Haal of what they're doing and their condition say something else. Because instead of focusing on telling people that their belief system is wrong and they will die on kufar, instead of calling them towards tawheed, they are only worried about "in our culture, it's this, in their culture it's Christmas." No, it's not an issue of cultures but it's an issue of aqeeda (belief) and everybody throughout the world, all of mankind, no matter where you are, it is a responsibility that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى has put upon you to accept the belief in tawheed and in the Prophethood of Rasulullah ﷺ. And this is why in the ayah above does not say that Rasulullah ﷺ was sent to just the Muslims, but he was sent to the al-alameen, the worlds, everybody in the world. In the ayah above (7:158), Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is ordering ALL of mankind to follow the message of Rasulullah ﷺ, this includes not just the believers but Christians, Jews, atheists, Hindus etc. If we were in the times of Musa AS, we would be the first to follow him. If we were in the time of Isa (Jesus) AS, we would be the first to follow him, but now we are in the time of Muhammad ﷺ.
[06:17] Why must doing dawah be our priority?
Another fitnah (trial) nowadays is saying that there is no exclusive truth, that there is many paths to Jannah. But what did Rasulullah ﷺ say in a Sahih Hadith #143 reported by Imam Muslim, that I swear by the One in whose hand is my soul, nobody that hears about me from this ummah, even if you are Jew or a Christian and then does not believe in the message, no doubt they will enter the hellfire." We don't make up a religion, this is by the order of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. That is the importance of dawah and that is why this has to be a priority. That is why we sacrifice our health, wealth, time, go through hardships and go through slander because we want good for mankind, we want to save people from entering that fire and take them to Al-Jannah. Imagine the importance of this. If you tell them that we are all good, lock arms with lesbian priestesses you may think you are showing a good example but in reality you are harming them. Imagine there's a fire in neighborhood and your neighbor is asleep under the sun. The fire is moving fast towards the house but you say to yourself let me just put a little shade on him so the sun doesn't bother him and you run and save yourself. But the fire comes and burns him and his house. Were you a good neighbor? No, a good neighbor would wake him up. You can't just let him sleep. What's more important, letting him get a good sleep and save him from the fire which is the fire of just this world so what about the fire of the akhira? What kind of neighbors, classmates, coworkers are we if we don't try and take the opportunity to save them from the hellfire.

[10:30] The HOW of giving dawah as ordered by Allah in Quran
Now Allah ordered the Rasulullah ﷺ HOW to call towards tawheed. From the last lecture we know that this is now the open dawah. Allah says in the Quran (15:94) "فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ - So proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists." There is so much balagah (rhetoric) in this ayah that the translation is difficult. The root word صَدْع means something that cracks. Shaykh Abdul Salam Rustami in his tafsir explains that when it is said to proclaim or call towards, it means a dawah which is straight, something that you don't shy away from, something that you crack the faces with as in up in your face, this is not a timid dawah, this is straight up. And turn away, أَعْرِضْ from the polytheists, meaning to refute the mushrikeen. So the first part is to call towards tawheed and the second part is to not worry about what they make up against you, don't worry about what they say about you because every time your dawah is on the Haq, enemies of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى will talk about you. There are people who made accusations against the best of people including Musa, Marriam, Isa, Muhammad (peace be upon all of them), then who are we? You think when you go out and speak the truth nobody will make up lies about you, dedicate their life to insulting you? But we don't worry about it. We turn away from all that, we speak the truth, refute all that is batil (falsehood) and keep moving forward. "وَمَا عَلَيْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ - and our duty is to deliver the message clearly" (36:17). Once we convey the message, then everything that people harm us with whether it's verbal or physical, we are patient for the sake of Allah. "وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ - and urge each other to the truth and urge each other to perseverance" (103:3). This is the implementation of these ayahs.
Scholars have mentioned that there was a bedouin who was not a Muslim upon hearing this verse (15:94) fell into prostration and said that he's making sajda to whoever said these words because these words could not have been said by a human. He made sujood to the beauty to balagah in this ayah.
In the tafsir of the above mentioned ayah, another scholar Shaykh Abu Muhammad mentions that this is an order from Allah to give unapologetic dawah. This is dawah that is straight. It says what is true in the best of manners with hikmah, but it does not fear the statements or the repercussions from mushrikeen. You turn away from that your job is just to speak the truth. Allah will then give you what is enough for you. Allah will be enough for you. He will protect you.
[17:01] Dawah must focus on Tawheed
As ordered, Rasulullah ﷺ began open dawah. He went to the people and addressed the core issue of tawheed. He did not tell them that you should not make zina or steal which obviously are important things but the main, the core problem facing Makkah was that of shirk. Today many du'at (callers) say that don't talk about that which has ikhtalaf (no consensus) on it. There are mosques where you see shirk being done openly, graves being worshipped, but these du'at say to go to talk to them about the importance of salah, to make ikram, ikhlas. Why? Because of course they will like that and then invite you to their conferences. But when you do dawah towards tawheed, you go to the masjid and tell people you can't worship graves, this is shirk, now is when you get cancelled.

[19:23] What is the dawah of Rasulullah ﷺ and sahaba?
Rasulullah ﷺ called towards Tawheed which is the foundation of dawah. The message of tawheed is a message of having Iman not just in the heart but on the tongue and in action. When Rasulullah ﷺ said that Iman has branches and the least of them is to remove something harmful, that is an action. People of bidah say that Iman is just in the heart, but as people of Ahlul Sunnah wal Jama' we say no, in fact Iman is a belief that is in the hearts but it is professed on the tongue (shahada) and it manifests on the limbs in your actions. This was the dawah of Rasulullah ﷺ and sahaba. They had Iman in their heart but they acted upon it. They prayed in the night and they fasted during the day amongst other obligations. It is not something you can just talk about and except to go to Jannah. Salvation is not free as is believed in other religions. Know that when someone says something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. You must have Iman, act on it and ask for mercy of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى.
[21:29] Mushrikeen begin slandering Prophet ﷺ as mentioned in Surah Al-Muddaththir (74)
Ibn Ishaq one of the early scholars, Ibn Hisham from his students and Ibn Kathir, Ad Dahabi and others have recorded that the people of shirk tried to first go to Abu Talib, the uncle of Prophet Rasulullah ﷺ and asked him to stop his nephew (ﷺ) from doing dawah. Abu Talib was their chief and well respected but was also a mushrik. They also went to Walid Ibn Mughirah who was a very intelligent and respected. They asked him what they should do. Walid Ibn Mughirah gathered everyone and decided to start a media campaign, a propaganda against Rasulullah ﷺ by spreading false news and character assassination. SubhanAllah these same techniques are used by the kuffar and shaytan today. The mass media at that time was at Al-Hajj when different tribes from outside of Makkah would come so that's when they wanted to spread the misinformation. But what were they going to say? This incident is mentioned in the Quran in Surah 74 Al-Muddaththir. They thought of calling him a kahin, a fortune-teller but at the same time they knew that no one would believe that because kahin back then were famous and known to people as people would go to them with their problems. So they thought they will say that he's a majnoon, a crazy person. But again they didn't think that anyone would fall for it because clearly Rasulullah ﷺ is not crazy. They thought to call him may be a sha'ir, a poet and that he made up this Quran, but they knew that it was physically impossible as firstly, Prophet ﷺ could not read or write. Secondly, Arabs at that time had a structure to their poetry but Quran is different from it. So they thought of calling him a sahir, a magician. Out of all of them, they thought this could be the one they could get away with using because someone could be a magician secretly and people not know about it. So the next thing they had to come up with was what was his magic? They said that he creates a separation between a person and their father, a person and their brother, a person and their wife, because when people who would accept tawheed, usually a fight would break out in the family. Quran mentions how he made this plan, "إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ - for he contemplated and deliberated (74:18). It goes on to talk about how he frowned, how evil his plan was. There are other references in the Quran about this too for example in Surah Sad, "وَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا سَـٰحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ - and the disbelievers say this is a magician and a liar" (38:4). They couldn't stick to one script so they would flipflop between all of the accusations. The result of plotting like this is highlighted by two incidences mentioned below.

[44:11] Dawah of Tufail Ibn 'Amr Ad-Dausi
Tufail Ibn 'Amr Ad-Dausi went back to his people and what did he do? He didn't go and say let me first take over, let me get the lobby going. He went straight to his father and told him that you and I are done, there is no more relationship. His father asked why to which he replied that now I am on Tawheed, on this religion but you are on shirk. His father said your religion is my religion. He then went to his wife and said the same thing. Some people from his nation accepted the dawah but most people did not. But he did not give up on them and continued to give dawah. One point to remember is that many reverts, new Muslims have this zeal but this should never make them frustrated when your family does not accept Islam. Instead it should lead to steadfastness.
      [45:33] Who was Abdur-Rahman ibn Sakhr Al-Dausi?
Tufail Ibn 'Amr Ad-Dausi comes back to Rasulullah ﷺ with one of the young men from his tribe who also became a Muslim and asked, "Oh messenger of Allah, make dua for the destruction of Daus, I am tired." This young man narrates the Hadith, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ who started to make dua and I knew that if he (ﷺ) had made dua for the destruction of my people then they would be finished. But Rasulullah ﷺ made dua to guide the people of daus." We will see later that people of Daus, much much later on, they would accept Islam.
Tufail Ibn 'Amr Ad-Dausi said to Rasulullah ﷺ that I am going to leave this young man in your servitude, to serve you, to memorize from you and to learn from you. This young man's name is Abdur-Rahman ibn Sakhr Al-Dausi. We all know him, he has narrated many ahadiths. He is commonly known as Abu Hurairah RA. Imagine how many ahadith he recorded and all of those are going in the meezan (scale) of Tufail Ibn 'Amr Ad-Dausi. That's why if you call a Muslim to make tawba and that Muslim comes back to the religion or if you call a kafir to Islam, imagine all those good deeds will be in your scale on the Day of Judgement.
