truly a useful video. i own the tokina 11-16 dx so this video was very helpful. i have decided to purchase the nikon z50 as a result. i am a travel and nature photographer and i enjoy a couple of weeks photo hiking each year. the z50's weight and compactness will be great. many many thanks.
really loved your video as we have invested so much in nikkor and tamron lenses switching of mirrorless Nikon comes with lots of question. You also covered legacy dx lens so definitely Fullframe tamron will do great. Thank you so so much. Now I don't have any doubt left.
Thanks for this dude! I do in fact have a lot of legacy glass but also have learned to pull focus on Nikon glass and just prefer a lot of their looks. Seems like it’s totally workable for video autofocus.
Thanks for the info dude....I have one on order and plan on using it with my Ronin S and Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for real estate video.Looks like it works great!
Im a huge fan of 3rd party glass for the hobbyist and light professional market (I know some 3rd party lens are legendary but for the most part they dont quit stack up to native). Anyways, I think people are missing the boat on this little mirror less because of all of the glass you can get IF you want to get outside the kit lens market and not drop a ton of money even with the FTZ costing $$. I'll add to your list here (Ones Ive tested): 10-20 Nikon AF-P is a great cheap wide angle with silent pulse motor (Probably 1 of like 3 Nikkor lens) 10-24 Tamron (With Tap Console Update) works 70-200 Tamron G2 (With tap console Update) works 24-120 F.4 Nikon, its full frame but I have it so I tested it... Works fine 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro Sigma C works without update I also like 3rd party because most can be sent back and have the mounts changed to a different system (Like cannon to nikon, etc).
Thanks for covering this, I've been curious about the autofocus noise on the new camera vs. my D5500. The difference in light between the 35 1.8 lense vs. the others is crazy.
This is exactly what I needed. Thanks man! I have 3 Nikon-mount lenses and I was sad to see Nikon struggling. I bought Canon SL3 with a few lower end Canon lenses and I have not been fully satisfied with Canon, except for 50mm 1.8 lens. I use mostly for real estate photos, videos and vlogs. I'll explore your links.
Nice - thanks for the comment. The z50 is a great mirrorless (crop-sensor) camera. Until better z-mount glass comes out, you'll be stuck with keeping the FTZ adapter on most times...
Excellent tutorial. I have d750 but video autofocus was not satisfactory. So I was planning to buy a z50. This tutorial assures me of using Nikon lenses. Thank you for posting this video.
Ameture photographer here and this video really helped me!! thanks a lot, I own a Z50 and was planning on buying ftz and a prime lens , my question is should I go for Nikkor 50mm f 1.8 or a DX Nikkor 35mm ? or any other suggestions would also help. focus is on portraits with bokeh.
35mm on a cropped sensor (z50) is really like 50mm; and 50mm lens on z50 is more like…75/80mm, so you’ll need to be pretty far away from subject to take pics - keep that in mind. That’s why I went with 35mm as my first ‘prime’ lens.
Awesome video, came here for the Sigma test. What autofocus settings are you on? On AF-C there seems to be no focus adjustment at all, and AF-F it’s all over the place even when face tracking. Wondering if the autofocus speed and sensitivity needs to be adjusted?
Yes - AF-F is like WT-F. Didn't do anything at least for video. My settings for this video - and what I keep them at are: Eye/Face Detection on - AF speed +2 AF tracking sensitivity 3.
If the tokina is from the same family of the 16-50 and 50-135 f2.8, i imagine that those works the same with af tracking on Z cameras. Can you confirm me this, because there's nothing about on internet. Af tracks well with 16-50 and 50-135? How much is the noise?
I'm very impressed with the AF, having used a G9 for a while, it's pretty much a manual focus camera for some video. Surprising because you're in a fairly dim light. Faster lens are really excellent.
Thanks for this..have you tested with the version II of this adapter?.(from Nairobi, Kenya) Is the motor noise also audible when using an external sound recorder like a wireless lapel from a distance of a few meters?
thank you very much for that! I've been reading everything I can about the sigma 17-50 2.8 on the FTZ and nothing was very convincing. This is main lens for stills. Do you think the auto focus would be quick enough for portraits of kids playing around? Is it as quick as a good DSLR through the viewfinder?
Nice video! Tip for more pro looking image: use Neutral or Portrait and then adjust Quick Sharp to -1. Perhaps add 0.5 saturation. You’d be surprised at the difference this makes. Standard can be really lovely too when Quick Sharp set to -1 and Contrast -1. If you grade the footage then the Flat profile is good, but still consider lowering Quick Sharp -0.5 or so.
Thanks for the comment. I will try this out for one of my new videos. I’ve been planning to switch the neutral but always forget by the time I’m ready to press record.
This was super helpful thank you! Sigma lenses I find sometimes just refuse to autofocus for still on my dslr, so wouldn't be surprised if it's happening on the ftz adapters for stills also. But the video autofocus looks great.
I love my Z50 with its FTZ adapter. The weirdest part so far, for me, is it won't allow AF on the Nikkor (Nikon) 10.5mm F2.8 DX lens. Everything else I tried (16 lenses) worked perfectly. Only the Nikkor 10.5mm DX is manual focus only. The lens works fine on the D500 and other DSLR Nikon cameras.
This is really useful. A big thank to you! I have plenty of DX lenses and am thinking of buying Nikon Z50. One question I have is about the ergonomic of using FTZ with DX lenses. How does it feel compared to DSLR? Do you think it is worth it to buy Z50 and use F mount DX lense?
The z50 is so light with the kit lens, but yes, can get a bit clunky when throwing the FTZ and something like a zoom lens..definitely gets forward-heavy when attaching to tripods and the like, since the body is relatively light. That said all the lenses I’ve tested work surprisingly well, and the z50 is good step into the mirrorless world; especially if you don’t have thousands in cash to spend on an entirely new ecosystem. One thing I still hate to this day is the flip down screen. Really wish it flipped to the side like the 5600. 🤷🏻♂️
I bought the Z50 recently and an firmware update for the Tamron 100-400 seems to be necessary. Do you know whether is a firmware update for the Tokina, lenses with the Z50. I've got the 11-20mm. Is it required to be used with the Z50?
Hello, thank you very much for your video, I will have my nikon z50 soon and I was looking for a video similar to this since I have several 3rd party lenses. I hope my sigma 17-50 f / 2.8 worked just as well as yours, since I read in some places that some people did not work well for this one. Regards
My big question is what focus options did you set on the camera for these demos? I have the Z 50 with the adapter and the F1.8 to35 mm lens and struggle w focus for videos. Did you manually select your face before you began recording? Also how can you get the majority of the screen in focus? Ex group picture or car?
To track your face you need to be in auto area focus and switch mode to AF-C. Also need to have eye and face tracking on. I don’t think I messed too much with the 2 sliders for how fast AF-C focuses, but if you’re having trouble definitely play around with those. To get more in focus, increase your F number. 1.8 will only focus on a small area, the rest will be blurry. Increase your F number to say...5 and above and more will be in focus. If shooting manual you’ll have to play with the other settings so that it’s not too dark - decreasing shutter speed and increasing ISO 👍
Hey, thanks for your review! I have the z50 with the kit lenses but i realise that all the new Z lenses have no VR, so i have a few questions about photography : is it still ok to use the Z lenses even if there is no stabilization or is it better to use the FTZ adapter and DX lenses which have stabilization?
Ha, yes - I even double checked the lens before recording - but it looked like 16 to my failing eyesight. Might do a stills video soon - pretty happy with the camera, and all lens do the eye-tracking for stills quite well!
You know what it was - i didn’t screw the camera tight enough onto the tripod - So every time there was a large motor movement the camera would jump up and down.
Haley no I haven’t. They are MUCH cheaper tho. I doubt the continuous video autofocus would work as well as the official FTZ - but if you’re just taking pictures or focusing once or twice while filming might be worth trying.
Nice video test .....I visualised as you try to move side ways the camera video shows lag,....there is a slight motion freeze frames while moving quickly. What's the reason for this behavior of autofocus
you know what, i didn't twist it all the way down on my tripod - so what i think you're seeing is the entire camera shake as the autofocus motor does its thing...
I can’t specifically say for that lens, but if the other Tokina, Sigma and Tamron lenses are any indication, it should. Might be a bit slower due to the focal length, but my guess is yes. 🤷🏻♂️
This is the video I want before deciding buying z50 or not appreciate that though my lens is Nikon 17-55 2.8 and so far I can't found any video testing that...
Thanks for watching. I can't promise, but if a lot of 3rd party glass works nicely with the FTZ adapter, I'd have to assume the Nikon lenses would do the same. I'd check reddit to see what they're saying.
Yes there’s a way in the menu I think. I found Nikon live support chat very helpful - might want to ask them and tell them your issue. They just helped me with a shutter button error last week. 👍
I have the first generation of Tokina 11-16 with no autofocus motor in the lens, does the Z50 have a autofocus motor in it? Used to manually focusing it on my D3300 but using it on my gf's D7500, I like not having to do it manually. I am looking into getting the z 50 with adapter =}
I can't specifically speak to the 17-50 f1.8 - but if the lenses I tested in this video are any indication - it should work fine? Can't guarantee that tho. I tested the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 - and video autofocus works well - and the nikon 35m f1.8 - also works great.
Make sure camera is set to AF-F (full time), not AF-C; make sure face detection is on in the settings, make sure the actual switch on the lenses is set to autofocus. Also might want to update the z50 firmware - they just released 2.0 which adds animal eye detection and improves autofocus.
I have the Sigma 17-50 and have same issue with Z50+FTC. In AF-F (with firmware 2.0) it atleast tries to do something with the focus but fails and it ends up in an error state (press shutter-release button to reset)
David Gillemo dang. That doesn’t sound good. Try using manual mode if you’re not already. Make sure face detection is on in the settings. You can also adjust the speed in which the camera tries to autofocus in the menu system. If all that fails maybe the sigma lens has a firmware update if you’ve had it for a long time? You’d have to buy that annoying sigma lens firmware update thingie tho. 🤷🏻♂️ you can see it works just fine for me - no issues 🤷🏻♂️
I suppose they over priced it because they knew Nikon lens users wouldn’t have much choice. Even today 2 years later Nikon still have very limited options for Z mount lenses.
My Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM does not autofocus with my Z50+FTZ but my older Tokina 11-16 f2.8 PRO DX II works fine. how is this possible? i've upgraded both FTZ and Camera body to the latest firmware but i cant make it to autofocus with the sigma. How is yours working while mine dont? we have the exact same lens!
Not 100% sure, but if you bought the Sigma lens a long, long time ago, it might have a firmware update as well. Sigma sells a lens firmware update kit, but I think it’s like 100-200 bucks. Kinda sucks if that’s what the problem is.
If you flip the bottom screen out it will automatically go into face tracking mode - otherwise check in the settings and make sure you’re on AF-F, not AF-C
one of the most useful videos regarding z50. thanks... :)
Thanks for watching
Strongly agree..
Nice Vid, nikon Z5 is working perfectly for Tamron G2 lens?
The most interesting test about Z50, everyone has practically the same review except this one

I was searching for long for videos on this topic. Thanks for presenting this video.

Hey, thanks for your review! For still photos with a decent shutter speed, it doesn't make a difference. For video it will look way more shaky without stabilization.

It looks like an external sound recorder is required.
Can you please give the modelyou use in this test for sound recording ?
Thanks
I’m using a cheap lav mic clipped to my shirt from MOVO (just search amazon - should be 20 USD - plugged into the ZOOM H1 recorder.
The adapter came with my z50 only reason I decided to get it
does anyone know if its posible to use the tamron 90 mm F017 with this camera? i have read that the af doesnt work but the mf??
Hi mate my question is did you upgrade the tamron firmware for it???
Hey, no I did not. I did update the z50 to the latest before trying all of these which is easy enough to do.
@@QuickTechReviews ok thanx
Thank you sir... I have a Nikon D5300 with sigma 17-50 f2.8 Need to upgrade to nikon z50. Need some Still images for Better results.
Nice! You will get great stills with this 👍
Sir, I've the same setup. But i'm more into videography. How will it perform Z50+ftz+17-50mm f1.8 ?
I can't specifically speak to the 17-50 f1.8 - but if the lenses I tested in this video are any indication - it should work fine? Can't guarantee that tho. I tested the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 - and video autofocus works well - and the nikon 35m f1.8 - also works great.
Nice Third Eye Blind shirt there!
yes! love 3eb!
I have the Tokina 11-16 and the Sigma 17-50 and both don’t autofocus...?
🤷🏻♂️ you can see it works just fine for me - no issues 🤷🏻♂️
you should post the setting as well
like af mod....
Good idea - get lots of questions - been replying individually.
you can just add text on this video.
Wonderfull
Thank you
I suppose they over priced it because they knew Nikon lens users wouldn’t have much choice. Even today 2 years later Nikon still have very limited options for Z mount lenses.
Very true
Good video, thanks!
Nice shirt
You need to update the FW on the sigma lens as well
Thanks! A very helpful video!
Thanks for watching - glad it helped!
How can I get the face tracking in video? I can only seem to get it on photo mode
If you flip the bottom screen out it will automatically go into face tracking mode - otherwise check in the settings and make sure you’re on AF-F, not AF-C
@@QuickTechReviews Thanks man! I figured it out 🙌
