Thank you for the setup video. Just got my Z50 and very impress; I have the FTZ adapter and continue using my old 18-55 kit lens, 55-300 lens and 35mm 1.8 prime. Just love it and a dream to use, great to hold and for portability in comparison to the heavy D7200 it's exceptional. Bit concerned about the durability of the LCD touch screen but it's probably fine and just me being over protective.
Thanks very much for this video. I just upgraded from a d3500 to the z50. Not that I fully understood the other camera. However I learned enough to know I wanted to upgrade. I appreciate your explanation of various features and your style of delivery. Great video.
I like the style and pacing of your presentation. Lots of good information without wasting time, and more than adequate detail and explanations. I subscribed, and will definitely check out more of your Nikon videos, as I'm in the market for a new camera, finances willing!
Thanks Hudson! My Z50's arriving tomorrow and your videos were a great help in both picking that camera and wrapping my brain around how the interface has changed since my D7100. I really appreciate your content and laid-back style. Will be looking up more of your work!
Your’s is the most immediately comprehensible review of Z50 settings I’ve viewed. I purchased the Z50 with the pair of kit zooms when first released to serve as a compact, lightweight alternative to my full frame Nikon DSLRs when that’s what best suited the circumstances, and camera has exceeded expectations. BTW I wondered how you were capturing the menu screens in real time. You answered my question when you got to the HDMI setting.
I realize that this is an older video but it (along with your reviews of the Z50) have been invaluable! I decided on the Z50 based on your recommendation. I am an art director/illustrator and I have begun creating a series of illustrated books and I use my Z50 for shooting reference material to illustrate from and to create my final, hi res digital files of my large illustrations. I combine colored pencil and photoshop to create my illustrations and then place them into InDesign to create the final art/book pages for 4 color offset printing. If you have any advice for either of these uses I would love your thoughts. Of all the photographers creating RUclips content, you understand the creative process better than anyone else that I have found. THANK YOU!
I have the Sony a7iii and my friend recently purchased the Nikon z50 and I was very impressed. I examined and compared images by both cameras and the a7iii at best was half a stop better.
Thank you.. I just picked up my Z50 yesterday. I upgraded from amazing D5600 hundreds. Budget is my most consideration not because I can't afford the high end but for usability dan results as a hobbyist.. With D5600 hundred n fix lens I already make the image that I'm expect. Again, thank you 🙏
Thanks for this awesome setup run through brother! I hope to get a Z50 in a few weeks when the money is right. I can't wait. I have heard excellent things about it and am stoked. I love your videos brother and appreciate you man
Oh boy! Thanks! I just got a Z50, (coming from a 13 year old Canon Rebel xTi, and the Nikon just overwhelmed with the number of choices and options. This video is just what I needed to figure out stuff like, back button focus, which seems ergonomically easier on this than on the Canon, btw. 🙂
Hey Hudson Great video! Really helpful. I purchased two one for my wife and I. I’m having a lot of fun with it’s light wait platform and performance. Thanks for all the setup info.
Hi Hudson from the wilds of regional Australia! Wonderful to have "discovered" you and having just bought a Z50 even better to watch your videos and gain some precious knowledge and tips. Your photography is fantastic and I like your presentation style on the videos. I also just noticed in your instagram pics that you were in Joshua Tree NP in late January 2020, as were myself and family on an epic California holiday - just before Covid descended on us all. Excellent video Henry! It helped me a lot! My name is Christian, I'm from Argentina and now a follower of your channel. I use my Z50 with a Nikkor 35mm 1.8G. I shot in JPG and I use Picture Control in "Standard" mode (it would seem to be the most balanced). Chirstian, Thanks for the kind words. My first name is Hudson, but no big deal. I'd urge you to shoot RAW. It gives you so much more flexibility to alter those settings in post production. Storage is cheap and RAW processors like Lightroom or Photo RAW are fabulous and allow batch processing so you don't have to do each image one by one. You'll be glad you have RAW files to re=edit years from now as your skills grow. Trust me. It's a lesson I wish I'd learned years before I did. To answer the question. I leave my settings on FLAT or Netural so that I can see a better representation of the RAW data I'm capturing in it's preview file and histogram on the camera's LCD. :-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Hi Hudson! Sorry for the confusion with your name! Thank you very much for your advice. I will try to start shooting in RAW. @@christian_alejandro_buchanan No worries at all on the name. I'm so very used to it. :-) Again if you use Lightroom or On1 Photo RAW, then you can edit one and batch process the others. Last night was a big test for me, for years I've been doing a corporate head shoot once a month and a major shoot for the same corporation once a year.In the past I've used I've used different systems including phase one medium format the older Nikon's and even micro four-thirds but now it's the z7 for the group shot of some hundred or so people and had great results and as a second body using a different system for the headshots. Last night I used the Z50 with the 50 mm 1.8 Z mount lens for head shots with great results. Hoo ray! But I do have a couple of issues... My damn nose rubs against the enlargement icon on the back LCD of the Z50 all the time, so I have to stop and reduce the enlargement to continue shooting it's a real pain in the rear end I tell you. I don't think there's a way to turn it off, but hopefully there will be a much larger eye cup available in the future to keep my nose away. Secondly, no matter how I seem to set the power off delay the camera goes to sleep all the time and I have to tap the shutter button to wake it up....maybe I have missed something in the setup and I've only had the camera for a week or so. Anybody have any feedback?
Colin. I'm right eyed, so I hadn't even considered the nose issue. Sadly my z6/7 eyecups don't fit the 50. Hopefully soon there'll be an option. The power off delay settings should enable you to avoid the shutoff issue. It has sub-settings for nearly every camera power state. When I'm in the field conserving batteries, I've found the Z cameras start up faster from the main switch than when they wake from the sleep state. It's near instant with the switch, so I tend to flip them to off between shots.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto such a fast response! I'll go back into the menu system again to see if I can figure out the power off delay. And yes like you, I tend to turn the camera off, and back on, and it is fast, but other times when I'm trying to photograph birds or whatever I want to be ready when I'm ready. More homework needed... Thanks!
Just before settling in to edit last night shoot I decided to give myself a little time to try and fix the sleeping issue with my Z 50. Well DUH! I deactivated the power saving feature, and it seems to solve that problem for the short time I tried it... Still have not found a workaround for my big nose though...
About BBF, even if you leave Shutter/AF-On to On, when back button focusing, the shutter doesn't trigger another AF-On while pressing shutter. So, it's still essentially BBF, but when you want to quickly shoot something you still have option of using just the shutter button for AF-On and take photo.
But then your thumb isn't free for other things once focused. Particularly in tripod mounted situations with exposure delay or a remote release. Sorry, I can't see a situation where I want it on the shutter. My thumb focuses, my finger shoots. They are very different functions. I don't know any working photographers who use it that way. I'm sure there's a few, but no one I know.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto I see what you mean. But, I like to BBF in AF-C and while mashing the thumb I press shutter to take a shot. It works for me, but I guess it may not if your main use of BBF is AF-L when the thumb is off.
This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and it was a very well thought out and informative video! I'm not a professional photographer but do photography as a hobby and pure enjoyment. I also take photographs for the local fire department. I have had a Z50 for approximately 9 months but it has sat on a shelf for most of that time. I have a love/hate relationship with it! I grew up using the view finder because I would hold the camera against me which helped stabilized the camera. As I have become older I need the stabilization even more due to have tremors. I tried using the Z50 view finder but either my nose or cheek would turn the touch screen on. (If I turned it off) It has been frustrating for me and Im planning on selling the Z50 because of that and I dont want to change formats and having to buy a new style of lenses. I will just stick with my D7100, D810, P900, or D3300. Again a really great video. Best wishes Duane
Thanks so much Duane for the feedback. I'm sorry it didn't work well for you. One suggestion though. Have you tried using the prioritize viewfinder, or viewfinder only settings? That little button to the left of the viewfinder toggles the modes.

Thank you very much for this great setup video for Z-50. I am looking everywhere for how to turn off the "Monitor auto-turnoff". It is quite annoying the monitor automatically turn off after a short period of time. I hope you can help me, please.
Hello, I'm planning to purchase this. Just wondering if the z50 can output clean 4k30 HDMI through a USB capture card? I plan to use this as a livestream cam
Hi, great video with lots of info, thanks 👍 Is it possible to re-assign the exposure compensation button? I always shoot fully manual, so exp-comp has always been a redundant button for me and, when I get a Z50, I would like to change it to focus point types i.e. to toggle between single point, group, face detect etc. The movie record would be changed to metering modes and then it would be pretty much set up the way I want it. Thanks in advance.
Perfect timing on this. Didn't know about the zoom feature on the edge of the screen. I may of stumbled on it eventually but you speed up the learning curve so much. Thanks! I have been loving my 50. So light and compact. I keep it in the console of my SUV at all times. Just in case. Kirk going to have a custom L-Bracket soon?
Hi, I'm confused when using A-priority mode, between Auto ISO with max threshoild value and the minimum shutter speed. I find that my camera is not respecting the min shutter speed. How does this come? Thanks a lot
Hudson On my Z50 the custom controls (shooting) the FN 1 button is set for WB. My question is how do you change that? I cant get it to change to another option. Thanks Duane
Hi Hudson, first time I've watched one of your videos. Some great explaining 👍 One question I have is, you mention the milky way and astrophotography, do you use the z50 for this? It is something I aim to do but haven't found any advice on the matter for this camera. What settings do you use? What lens? And do you use any other equipment, like a star tracker? The z50 is my first camera and I have next to no experience. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers in advance. Luke.
Check this thread out: stargazerslounge.com/topic/372654-andromeda-full-moon/?tab=comments#comment-4087952 this guy was using the Z50 with the 55-250 kit lens. Amazing for Astro...
Hi Henry Did you ever actually try to set up back button focus on the Z50? or you had assumed that if it works on the Z6,7's then it would work on the Z50? Practically, changing the menue in the a4 - AF activation and in g2 - custom controlls to AF ON does not do anything to the AE-AL back button .... I would love to get your comment on that.
First name is Hudson. Of course, I only use back button focus on my beloved Z50 and I have been since the day it released. 10s of thousands of frames now. I've been using it today on Mount Rainer from my room at Paradise Lodge. Id go back and check your settings. Something didn't take. Deactivate the shutter with A4 and use the custom settings to customise controls for stills setting AEL to AF on. Bam, you're in back button blidd:)
Hi Hudson! Thanks again for making these videos. I've taken the autofocus off the shutter and it's very helpful. It seems like releasing the AF-On button leaves the focus wherever it was last positioned. Is there some difference between using it like this and using the AF-Lock function to lock the focus?
Great video! I am thinking about getting a z50. When you are shooting in manual mode with auto iso if you press the e/v (+/-) button and move the back dial does it change the exposure compensation by adjusting the iso up or down?
Interesting video. I'm doing mainly wildlife, at the moment using a D7500 (+4/300 PF and TCs), and the Z50 may do the trick as a second body, especially when travelling. What I got from you review is that the high ISO performance isn't quite as good as the D500 / D7500, both pretty amazing at high ISO. Alright, that means a bit more work in PP. But how good is the AF really, compared to the D7500 (which is pretty close to the D500)? Especially when it comes to small birds? That's what I'm still not clear about. Any thoughts?
Watch the AF for motion with the Z6/7 video I linked on the description. It's the same as those cameras' system. Different than the DSLRs. There's a learning curve to the auto area AF method, but I'm getting great results.
All Nikons have a cord routing door from the battery compartment. If you look at the Z6/7 or D cameras you'll see it's to the side of the battery door with a rubber plug that pops out for sealing. It lets you route a dummy battery's cord through it to power the camera from an external source. I use that all the time with a Tether Tools dummy battery to have unlimited power when I'm filming.
I bought this camera with the two lens bundle. Any suggestions on portrait lens that don’t cost too much? I also want to try landscapes as well. Is it worth upgrading the lenses?
I haven't shot with the longer kit lens, but I love the 16-50. It's really a surprisingly good lens with great backlight performance (ie into the sun). If you want to do portraits, I'd look at the 50 1.8 or the 85 1.8. with the APS-C crop, the 50 might be pretty nice for you. I love that lens. I have links at www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
@@HudsonHenryPhoto thank you, I’ll take a look at the 1.8 50mm through your link! I have been pleasantly surprised by both lenses but would like something of higher quality for portraits. I got some decent pics of animals using the longer lens on my trip to Costa Rica back in March of last year. The quality is actually pretty good especially when you’re trying to capture a pic of a slow moving sloth high up in the trees. Would the 16-50mm also make a good lens for landscapes? The pics I’ve gotten so far admittedly look pretty good for a person just getting into pretty photography.
I used to use AE-L in the days of center weighted metering, but I think it's become a bit of a legacy button for most of us who've embraced matrix as good as it is now. Occasionally I use spot metering with manual, but I can't recall hitting AE-L in the past 8 years myself. :) AF-On its where my thumb lives for focusing though.
@@NikolajFreiesleben I only shoot panos in full manual. Been shooting panos since medium format film days. it's a huge part of my work. I can see how you might hold AEL, for that, but flipping to manual is just as surefire.

I did it with the Nikon D5300, do u know if i can do it with the Z50? or any other solution to control apeture on manual mode without using touch screen. Thnx
Hallo,I am more of a user of the video functions and the Nikon Z50 has its own switch between photo and video mode. Unfortunately, I cannot find any function in video mode to put the start-stop on the normal trigger button. Am I making a mistake or is there not this possibility?I find the video button itself difficult to access.
In custom settings g2 (movie control settings) you can set a number of buttons (not the stills shutter button though) to record video. You could set it to work from either front function button or the OK button on the back if you want. If you don't like the movie record button, I'd go with the OK probably.
I am trying to optimally grab my gear within $1000 along with a single kit lens, maybe a hundred dollars give or take, in that regard, my options as available in my region are XT30, M6 MKII, Z50 & A6400. It would mean a world to me if you could help me decide my first ever gear. My focus is purely image quality, I am not weighing on video capabilites much, I prefer my smartphone and action cam for that. Cheers & thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot for the quick reply!! Not many channels reply to comments. A very classy act on your part!! I appreciate it very much!!
No I was not aware of that and will try it even though they say old people hate change (thats me) lol
I will try that and really put sone effort in using the camera.
Thanks again for your help.
Best wishes
Duane
@@duanemcclun You bet Duane. Helping people with their photography is a joy. :-)
Thank you very much for this great setup video for Z-50. I am looking everywhere for how to turn off the "Monitor auto-turnoff". It is quite annoying the monitor automatically turn off after a short period of time. I hope you can help me, please.
Custom Setting C3. Power off Delay. :-)
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Great! Thank you very much. You are going to make my life much easier, for sure!
Hello, I'm planning to purchase this. Just wondering if the z50 can output clean 4k30 HDMI through a USB capture card? I plan to use this as a livestream cam
I shot 850 images with 2 second exposures using intervals of 50. No problem with the z50 battery.
Hi, great video with lots of info, thanks 👍
Is it possible to re-assign the exposure compensation button? I always shoot fully manual, so exp-comp has always been a redundant button for me and, when I get a Z50, I would like to change it to focus point types i.e. to toggle between single point, group, face detect etc. The movie record would be changed to metering modes and then it would be pretty much set up the way I want it.
Thanks in advance.
Great info thanks!
I have a nikon coolpix p950. But something has drawn me to the z50 and its set up. I don't know why but I have ordered one.
If I keep these settings in my z50 manual mode, would I get good photos in day time?
Hi, I'm confused when using A-priority mode, between Auto ISO with max threshoild value and the minimum shutter speed. I find that my camera is not respecting the min shutter speed. How does this come? Thanks a lot
Very helpful thank you
Hudson
On my Z50 the custom controls (shooting) the FN 1 button is set for WB.
My question is how do you change that? I cant get it to change to another option.
Thanks
Duane
Hi Hudson, first time I've watched one of your videos. Some great explaining 👍
One question I have is, you mention the milky way and astrophotography, do you use the z50 for this? It is something I aim to do but haven't found any advice on the matter for this camera. What settings do you use? What lens? And do you use any other equipment, like a star tracker?
The z50 is my first camera and I have next to no experience. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers in advance.
Luke.
Check this thread out: stargazerslounge.com/topic/372654-andromeda-full-moon/?tab=comments#comment-4087952 this guy was using the Z50 with the 55-250 kit lens. Amazing for Astro...
Does z50 also has this option to switch focus target by Ok button?
Yep. :)
Hi Henry
Did you ever actually try to set up back button focus on the Z50? or you had assumed that if it works on the Z6,7's then it would work on the Z50?
Not really. That's another cool part of it.
Great video! I am thinking about getting a z50. When you are shooting in manual mode with auto iso if you press the e/v (+/-) button and move the back dial does it change the exposure compensation by adjusting the iso up or down?
Indeed it does. :) thanks in advance if you use my links. Www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Thank you! I will use your link
Have you noticed the little notch in the battery door? What's that for?
Thanks❤
how do i get my f stop to 2.8? please help
Because there is no AE-L botton on Z cameras, i like to use AF-on for that.
@@HudsonHenryPhoto Even om matrix exposure change and i like to do handheld panos.
@@NikolajFreiesleben I only shoot panos in full manual. Been shooting panos since medium format film days. it's a huge part of my work. I can see how you might hold AEL, for that, but flipping to manual is just as surefire.
i had d5300 and now z50 , on the manual mode i wanna to do this :
i need to control aperture when i hold the (+/-) boutton on the top and the playing with scroll wheel
, on the same time.
I did it with the Nikon D5300, do u know if i can do it with the Z50? or any other solution to control apeture on manual mode without using touch screen.
Thnx
I'd like to know this too. It seems too inconvenient...
Thanks a lot for your fast help! I will try the OK button on my next trip on Weekend.
thx
I am trying to optimally grab my gear within $1000 along with a single kit lens, maybe a hundred dollars give or take, in that regard, my options as available in my region are XT30, M6 MKII, Z50 & A6400. It would mean a world to me if you could help me decide my first ever gear. My focus is purely image quality, I am not weighing on video capabilites much, I prefer my smartphone and action cam for that.
Cheers & thanks in advance!
I'm a huge fan of the Z50. :) I had an a6500 before it and it was no where near for me m the Z50 hands down. I dig Fuji, but I really do think you'd love the Z50 and that little kit lens is astoundingly good. :) I've got links here: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
