EQ 004 - Québec City EV Show & Test drive of the Imperium SEV

  • Québec City held their dedicated electric vehicle show on October 1st. I also got to test drive the Imperium Motors SEV all electric SUV! If you want to see what cars, accessories, bikes, and other stuff was there, as well as get a preview of the Imperium SEV, then this video is for you. I hope you enjoy it.
The Imperium Motors SEV was previously named the ET5 but was changed due to issues with another vehicle that had that name. Oddly, in China Skywell renamed it to the EV6. I think Kia is going to have something to say about that.
***The audio was not the best since I did not have my dedicated mic on the show floor, so I apologize in advance.

"Take 751" haha thanks Andre. That Skywell SUV looked nice until I looked into it more. Apparently NEDC is around 25% more range compared to EPA which puts it somewhere in the 300km range and the price is far too high for that. Thanks for the videos!

Thanks for the comment. My EQ series (EV-olution Quickies) is exactly as the name states, quick and simple videos, unlike my main EV-olution series of videos that are up to 25 minutes long (my Polestar 2 review is actually 36 minutes 😎). This was just a quick drive/teaser to see if people were interested in a full video of the SEV and since the feedback is positive I will be making a full review once it becomes available as a press car. Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video.

Imperium is at the Montréal EV show this weekend and I am hoping to get a bit of time to go see the North American SEV that is in the test drive circuit, but my EV6 is in very high demand and I have spent the last 2 days letting people drive my EV6, non stop, all day long. Today I am going to let the organizer know that I need a block of time to record some video and I intend to speak to Imperium to find out when the press cars will arrive.

@@EV-olution I can imagine! I've watched all your EV6 and Polestar videos and have an EV6 on order due 'early 2023' here in Victoria. In the meantime I'm getting to known the rest of the players because why not. There is a smattering walk around and interior videos online for the SEV establishing a luxurious offering, especiallyfor the price point!
What's missing however, is non-visual content like, true or vegan leather, soft or hard plasics, infotainment responsiveness and depth, nav, connectivity, Android Auto/Carplay, driving sound isolation, etc.
Also, if you have an opportunity to ask, there is confusion on the Imperium/Skywell/Skyworth/ET6/SEV names, what exactly is this vehicle called? It seems like Imperium is the importer only?
Many thanks and keep up the great content, I really appreciste the Canadian perspective.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад

@@georgeg2568 Imperium is the importer, but they have also invested millions in setting up a dealer network, as well as getting the vehicle certified for North America, so they are heavily invested in getting things done. Right now it is called Imperium Motors Corp and the vehicle is SEV in the North America. Forget the Asian versions because it is all mixed up with other brands and names.

About the Skywell ET5 , it was known in China as the Tianmei ET5 , then Skywell but in April 2021, the division was renamed Skyworth Auto to distinguish it from parent Co. Skywell. Initially, the name change did not include the Skywell ET5 itself, however in July 2021 the vehicle itself received both a new brand and model name when voice control was added , now known overall as the Skyworth EV6. So why Skywell in NA markets ? Sounds better perhaps ? In China it's known as the "most confusing" EV brand , perhaps Imperium should have gone with Weltmeister EV instead (4 well established models)

The numbers I have mention that the onboard charger is 6.6kW (a bit weak I think). So charging at home will take a while if you are at a low SoC. If you have the 72kWh battery, it would then take around 12hrs to charge this baby. On DC, it's around 75kW. numbers are from 30 to 80% (so 50% = 36kW) takes 30 minutes.
Range is just a number as it varies a lot. A tonne of parameters will impact the range. That said, NEDC is 520km on the big battery. Experience tells us NEDC is correct when divided by 1.43 to get the EPA range. Therefore, around 365km for the big one. But this is meaningless. Don't rely on that. If it's cold, you'll do less, if you're a race driver, it'll be way less. If you drive like a vicar, it'll be more... etc.
This will be a good car to travel for 500km journeys I think. If you want to drive more, you need a car with a charging curve that is better than this. As mentionned, range is a thing but, in my book, charging is the bottleneck so the faster this is, the better.

The fact that there are no hydrogen filling stations anywhere (ok, there are a couple in North America, but it makes for a long drive to fill up just to get home to be empty again 😉), the fact that hydrogen fuel cell technology is inefficient in terms of power used to create and provide the fuel vs range efficiency, and there are no cars available at a decent price vs what you have to deal with, plus the fact that the CEO of Toyota has been lying about EVs being worse for the environment as compared to a gas car as well as lobbying governments to roll back environment laws… In my book Toyota has nothing. Sorry, but I lost respect for Toyota when Mr. Toyoda was caught being anti-environment (as documented in many articles) 😎

The North American SEV will be in English and French. The car I drove is a Chinese demo unit that is pre-production.

Few notes about imperium sev. Affordable yes, but as the wise says.. you pay for what you get.. the imperium sev skywell et5 does not have thermal regulator. I believe it has no active cooling, no heat pump, no liquid cooling.. what it means is that the battery heat is monitored from the battery management. Some features may not be available when the battery temperature reaches a certain limit. You may not be able to use fast dc charging if battery is too hot. What it also means is that this vehicle will not let do intense road trip. One the second stop for dc charging it may not work, or if it does, it may not work on the third stop for dc charge. Because remember, everytime you use dc fast charge it boost the battery heat incredibly. Because it has no thermal regulator to cool the battery down, battery will bake.. the more it bakes the more degradation it will get over years. This is the same as the nissan leaf. Very primitive battery system. There is no mention of any heat pump. So imperium is bad for long distance travelling. Another thing the company does not advertise is the theft and hack security system. Stealing a Tesla is not easy to do as you need the owner cellphone and the pin number. Jamming doors signal can not be done on the tesla. But on this car it remains to be tested.. imperium doesn't want talk about it.. lastly cabin temperature is set by the computer. 24 degree is the coolest you can get according to some reviews. Juste like the bolt AC will stop running when battery energy is too low. Lane assist will not work at all without street lines. It won't keep the lane at all. So in the snow, forget about it. For around town, yes if there is a anti theft security. But for crossing the country and road trips, forget about it.

Your comments seem to be more about bashing a Chinese electric vehicle than about facts that could help people learn about electric cars because your information is incorrect. You are right that you get what you pay for, but prices of EVs are coming down and it is not because the Imperium SEV is 40 to 45,000$ CDN that it is bad. If that is the case then you have to say the Bolt EV, Kona Electric, Soul EV, Ioniq Electric, Niro EV, VW ID.3, VW ID.4, Renault Zoe, until recently the Telsa Model 3 SR, etc, are all bad because they have versions that are about 45,000$ or less.
Now with regards to the other points you mentioned…
You are incorrect about the heat management system. The Imperium SEV (Skyworth/Skywell ET5) has liquid thermal management of the battery and drive system. The only current EV on the market to not include any thermal management of the battery is the Nissan Leaf. The Imperium SEV does not have a heat pump, but that only affects the climate control and how much power is used to heat or cool the cabin. In other words, the stated range of the Imperium SEV is lower than if it had a heat pump because heating and cooling of the cabin requires more power without one. Telsa only recently added a heat pump to the Model 3 and Model Y but that does not mean that they were bad before, they were just less efficient than newer ones, but they still have liquid thermal management of the battery, etc. The Imperium SEV is fine for long distance driving as well as DCFC. Once press cars are available to test this in real world situations we will know more, but as it stands, based on technical specs, the Imperium SEV has liquid thermal management and will not heat up like a Nissan Leaf, nor will it suffer the issues you mention.
As for the anti-theft system, the SEV includes one, just like all cars today. Regarding Tesla being immune to theft, there are videos of the Model S being stolen within 60 seconds with fob signal replication, just like with many other cars out there. The Model 3 and Y are better protected, but they are the only cars with this type of system so you can't say just the SEV is bad because of it, you have to say that every other car in the world is bad because of it, including the Tesla Model S and X.
The climate control of the Imperium SEV can have the AC set to as low as 16C, as confirmed by the president of Imperium Motors Canada after I asked him the question. I am not sure where you got 24C, but it makes no sense. Also, to note, every modern car made in the world today uses a computer to set the temperature of the climate control. It is not because you turn a knob that the temperature is controlled by a physical regulator, the knob controls the computer setting. Regarding the HVAC shutting down because of a low battery, this is typical of almost all EVs made in the world today. When the battery gets to a very low state of charge the car will reduce power output to the motor(s) as well as reduce or cut climate control to allow you to get a few extra kilometers of range to make it to a charging station. This is not bad; it is efficient energy management used in almost all EVs.
Regarding Lane Keep Assist, almost every car that exists, and that has LKA, requires painted lines to function correctly. This includes Tesla, and in the snow all cars will be negatively affected with LKA not working as intended. You can't single out just the Imperium SEV because the snow scenario affects all cars, and not just electric ones either.
Before you deride a product, or a car, you should ask the questions you have to the right people. In this case I am sure Imperium Motors would have been more than happy to answer any questions you have about their electric SUV. Have a great day.

      Totally untrue!
Where on earth did you get this misinformation!
      You definitely fabricated it.
The SEV has liquid thermo regulation, you will never find yourself with a battery that is too warm to accept fast charging , absolutely no problem on long distance and you logic of refusing a third fast charge is untrue of any vehicle!
No there is no heat pump and nor as the competition, you need to get a Preferred package in the Kona to get it, ,in the Kia an EXT model at $50,600 and in the Polestar you must order the Plus (a $5500 option) at $55,500.
The SEV has a great antitheft system manufactured by Skyworth Electronics.
Most EV drivers would turn off the AC manually if the range got low so whether a car shuts it off or not when low to maximize remaining range is by no mean an issue and certainly not something worth discussing as I think most of us would want it in an EV.
The SEV lowest setting is 16 degrees, even in 30 degree weather the SEV can cool the cabin easily to 20 degrees.
Keep Lane Assist never works on snow covered roads!

      President at Imperium Motors Canada

@@jachristiandubois the latest reviews stated no thermal regulation by the journalist. You should contact the journalist. You should hire marketing specialist or at least put better and more accurate information available.

@@EV-olution not bashing chinese, not at all. Most of everything i own is made in china. All the information came from actual et5 drivers around the world. Including journalists. If imperium didn't want misinformation they should have stated the true vehicle specs right at the beginning especially when they are this close to deliver their first car. They shouldn't hide crucial information such as thermo regulator or climate control or anti-theft. It only take any webmaster 10 minutes to add those specs online. Why all the secrecy. We have more technical data on the bz4x that is over a year ahead than we have on the et5 that is just a month ahead. Where is the production plan, can we get a video tour of the production and assembly line? Where is the pdf chart and internal battery press pictures ? That sort of thing. In order to gain trust and because imperium is still a startup they have to gain consumer trust more than any other brands. So allow journalists to take an SEV home and let them use it a week or so. Let them truly roadtrip the ET5 in real time. Let the community judge. I'll be glad to delete the post when the real specs and true battery specs are available.

@@reefgratos2035 One journalist makes a 2 word mistake and you turn it into a full speculative rant. Equipment for the North American bound production is still in discussion. We will not talk about uncertainties but i can assure everyone that our SEV will over deliver on what has been officially communicated on the vehicle. When final specs are anounced it will be like a full basket of Easter eggs.
