  • Can you use any winter tire on an EV? Is there an advantage to getting a wheel designed for EVs? Are some wheels made for winter use? Fast Wheels is a Canadian company!?! Yes, it is! I answer these and many other questions in this video. I bought new Fast EV wheels for my Kia EV6 for winter use, and I bought winter tires. If you want to know why I chose these specific wheels and tires, and if you want to know more about Fast because they offer more than just wheels, then this video is for you.

    Greetings from Switzerland and thanks for interesting information. Got similar black winter wheels with Kia logo fitting perfectly with my Snow White Pearl EV6 AWD. So winter tires by the way also from Continental and the wheels look better than OEM summer version. Thanks also for the remark about tire pressure to check every MONTH!🎄🎅

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  5 месяцев назад

      I would suggest 19 inch if you are interested in range increase. There are several videos that show that smaller wheel diameter helps improve range. My 19" EV05 with winter tires give me similar range to my 20 inch summer wheels, if you remove the heater from the equation. Lighter and smaller diameter wheels = more range, as long as you don't put super sticky tires on them.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much, I am glad you liked my video. Regarding using the stock rims for winter, that is what I would have done if my stock rims were 19", but they are 20" and not as efficient in snow so I opted to use the 19" Fast EV05 for winter. The 19" EV05 are more narrow and have a higher profile, making them better for winter use than the stock wheels. Next year I might swap the stock 20" rims for Fast Wheels in 20" to gain efficiency due to the lighter weight.

    Hi mate I recently put my winter tyre's fro my leaf onto the Niro (Goodyear ultragrip performance 215/50 17s) and was incredibly surprised how much they transformed the Niros steering! The steering used to have a light dead ahead feeling at highway speeds and a lightness that didn't help confidence and felt nervous. It now has pin sharp cohesiveness along with a meaty beautiful feeling of confidence and control. Then I found out two things firstly I made an error of thinking the leaf had the same specifications in size etc whereas the Niro should have a55 profile but why would a 5 decrease in profile have such a brilliant effect it was the that I found out that these winter tyres are XL not SL. I will be testing a new set of front Michelin primacy 4s in the spring that will be XL 55 specification to see if this has the same effect if so Kia should put out a memo as these should be standard equipment if the steering changes. It is that good its a huge safety benefit not to mention epic fun when pushing the Niro into bends;) Cheers

    Hi. Thanks for the Video. I have a Genesis GV70 EV and I am buying winter wheels. The Fast FC04 appears to be 2lbs lighter than the EV03. Will the EV03 still be the preferred wheel despite its weight difference?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  8 месяцев назад +1

      I suppose it mostly comes down to personal preference for the looks. The designs of the EV03 and FC04 are not very aero, so the difference between the two on the highway will be negligible. The weight savings of 2lbs per wheel for the FC04 will make them slightly more efficient in city/stop-and-go driving. The other thing to consider is if you will drive them in the winter with snow and salt. If yes, and if you choose the FC04, be sure to choose a finish that is winter approved. You may also want to consider the EV04 since they are similar to the FC04 with regards to looks. I hope this helps.

      @EV-olution  Год назад

      As mentioned in the video, these sensors were a test set that I bought on eBay and do not work. Usually, with the correct TPMS sensors, you don't have to program anything. This has been the case on Kia and Hyundai vehicles since 2016. My Niro EV and my wife's Soul EV both automatically leart their new sensors automatically by driving for 2 to 10km. Like I mentioned, I will be making a dedicated video for TPMS sensors because it is a complicated subject that becomes more complicated by Kia and Hyundai having several codes for the same sensor and for different vehicles.

    Regarding noise of tires, I’ve seen on some reviews that EV OEM all season tires now tend to have a foam insert that dampens out resonance in the cavity. As EVs become more popular perhaps winter tires might begin to be offered with this technology? I’m not sure if it’s patented and limited to certain tire manufacturers but this might be something worth keeping at eye out on tyrereview or other reputable sources.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +1

      During a training session at the latest EV association event I attended, Michelin went over the foam question. It is not limited to specific manufacturers, Michelin has foam in certain tires, more often found on EVs like Tesla and Kia, but when it came to winter tires they opted to not use it. Michelin uses a technology called Piano Tuning to adjust harmonics in the tire by creating a specific tread design. Other manufacturers do their own thing to reduce noise. Several people attending the training session attested to how quiet the Michelin X-Ice Snow was even though it does not have foam. My video does not do the VikingContact 7 justice for noise because of the microphone issue, but they are not as loud as it appears in the video. I hope this helps.

    Great Video. I'm in Ottawa so would love to support a local Canadian company. There was a good explanation and attached video on the benefits of the EV01 with inserts over a regular wheel without the inserts. I prefer the look of the EV05 that you got over the EV01. Have you seen any data or discussion on the difference between the EV01 with inserts and the EV05 with respect to efficiency? The EV01 is obviously more closed in with the inserts but the EV05 is just a bit lighter. Does that balance out or is the EV01 the most efficient of the Fastco wheels?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  9 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you very much. I am not aware of any data regarding the difference between the EV05 and the 01, but I can say that even though I have winter tires on my EV05 wheels and use them in the snow, I am getting similar efficiency as in the summer with my OEM 20 inch wheels (not counting use of the heater in the winter or AC in the summer). The lighter EV05 and its very specific aero design, as Ian talks about in my video, make the EV05 very efficient. I would run the EV05 in 20 inch in the summer if the option existed at Fast. Hopefully enough people will ask for the 20 inch size for them to make it.

    Hi Andre, I was initially going to just get winter tires for my Gt line 2. I ordered the Viking 7 from Quattro tires. After doing more research, I decided to down size to a 19” and get wheels and tires. I contacted Quattro tires and they were nice enough to let me exchange. All that said, when it came Time to place my new order, the “specialist” said that I shouldn’t use the Viking 7 on an ev as it won’t reduce the rolling friction that a dedicated ev tire ( with the leaf symbol) would. The tires he proposed weren’t more expensive than the Viking 7 so I don’t see it as a cash grab. How did you find they performed last winter re: noise, wear and economy? Also, I was looking to get the Fast ev05 rims. Based on your video, your rims are 19” x 7.5”. The Quattro website suggests a 19” x 8.5 wheel? Any thoughts? Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Peter

      Hi Peter. Regarding what I think about the VikingContact 7, it has been fantastic and in combination with the EV05 wheels, I have found them to be very efficient and quiet. It is important to note that I spoke with the Contiental representative before choosing the VikingContact 7 because I have been a Nokian user and fan for several years. When Ian at Fast suggested the Viking 7, because they don’t offer Nokian at Fast, I spoke to the Continental representative, and he gave me some interesting information about efficiency of their winter tires. I decided to give them a try based on his info, and I have not regretted the choice even though the VikingContact 7 is an older model of tire. They are quiet, have excellent traction, and seem durable even though I like sport mode 😎. As for the wheel size and tire size: The wheel size was a suggestion directly from the specialist, Ian at Fast, so I trust that I have the right size and width for my needs. The wider wheel is not as efficient in snow, so the 7.5” wide was the choice to go with for me. The tire size is the Kia OEM tire size and in combination with the 7.5” wide wheel, offers a nice buffer bulge to protect the wheels in case of brushing against a curb (I am always terrified when my wife takes my car 😉). I hope this helps and thanks for watching my video.

      @@EV-olution thanks for the detailed response. One last thing. In discussing with the folks at Quattro tire this morning, if I switch to the 19”wheels he said I would have to have the tpms programmed by a garage. He also said that unless the Kia can support more than one tpms sensor I would have to have it calibrated every year? What has your experience been?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  8 месяцев назад

      Since 2016, all Kia and Hyundai vehicles automatically pair and read new TPMS sensors. You can have multiple sets of wheels with different sets of TPMS and it will work. As long as you have compatible sensors there is nothing to do but drive for about 5 km with the new TPMS installed. Anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you a TPMS programming service that you don't need. Just make sure you have compatible TPMS sensors and you are good to go. FYI, the EV6 with 20" wheels uses a different TPMS than the EV6 with 19" wheels. The wheels have nothing to do with the issue, you just need to have the right TPMS for your model of EV6.

      Hi, me again. 😊 did you change your tires yourself? I ordered my rims and tires and was trying to find “Jack” information in the Ev6 manual. I can’t find any mention of where the “safe” areas are to place the Jack arm.

    How are the winter tires performing one ice for you?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +1

      We recently had an ice storm and they did very well. So far I am very happy with these tires; they offer excellent snow traction for both stopping and acceleration, they handle extremely well in wet and dry conditions, and the ice capabilities are very good. However, if you drive on ice all of the time, unlike me where I drive on dry pavement most of the time, then nothing beats a good studded winter tire on ice and you should consider the Nokian 10, or R5 studded, or the Michelin X-Ice studded.

    Why did you switch from the factory 255/45/R20 tire/wheel size to 235/55/R19 instead of 235/60/R18 or 235/65/R17? It is my understanding the smaller the wheel diameter the higher the efficiency. Also the higher the tire profile the more comfortable the ride should be over Quebec potholes.

      *** EDIT: Please see my last comment in this reply thread regarding the fitment of the 17" wheel on the EV6. It has nothing to do with the caliper ***
      The EV6 will not accept 17" wheels due to the caliper size therefore 18" is the smallest wheel that can be used. I chose 19" for a couple of reasons:
      (1) The factory size below the GT-Line Pack 2 is 235/55/19 tire, therefore I know the diameter is exactly what the car is expecting.
      (2) With the 19" wheel there is more sidewall than the 20", so offers more comfort. The wheel and tire are more narrow allowing it to cut through snow better than the 20". And the 19" retains more of the sporty handling than the fatter 18" would.
      I hope this clears it up and thanks for taking the time to watch. 😎

      I have a March 17,2022 EV6Pk1 order/deposit which I expect soon. I ordered Pk1 because it came with 19” wheels/tires and because of the additional interior headroom with the deletion of the sunroof. To hopefully avoid curb rash and improve rough winter ride quality I plan to install 235/60/R18 winter tires/rims.

      @@bobstevenson4396 the 19" wheels are definitely an adantage for comfort and range. For the 2023 model year Kia revised the range ratings to be more realistic. The 2023 Pack 2 drops from 441km to 406km and the Pack 1 climbs from 441km to 454km. Wheels and weight make a difference. I hope you get your soon. Merry Christmas.

      Yes I noticed the 2023 range changes for the 20” & 19” sizes and I am hoping there could be an additional improvement going to 18” (it appears Tesla also quotes range increases as wheel diameter decreases). I also note that Kia plans to change to STMicroelectronic Silicon Carbide power modules on the EV6 with a resulting range increase of up to 5%. I wonder when that change will come into effect?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад

      Regarding going to 18", yes, there will be a range improvement as smaller wheels result in better range. There is a good video from Engineering Explained that explains this. It may not be a very big increase but it will help. As for the technology change, I did not see anything that would point to a date where the switch would happen. I am very curious to see how much real world range will be had, including in cold weather situations.

    Am I correct in assuming that the tires and rims were 900$ each? Plus HST?

    • @EV-olution

      No, far from it. As mentioned in the video, the MSRP is not what resellers sell them for and they are far less expensive. I just looked online and Canada Wheels has the EV05 in 19" at 300$ CDN each and the tires I bought in 19" are listed at 207$ CDN each. That was the first site listed in a quick Google search that I looked at, but you may find them for less elsewhere.
