Kia EV6 "Hidden" Features

  • See Kia EV6 hidden features and how to access them. The Kia EV6 is loaded with technology, but some things are difficult to find, and some are almost impossible to know about unless you read the giant manual. In this video I show you how to access some of these features. Since the Hyundai Ioniq 5 shares the same platform and technology as the Kia EV6, some of these tips and tricks should apply to it as well. There are surely features that I have not covered in this video, but that is what Part 2 videos are for 😉
    As with most of my videos, this is designed to help those who find technology more difficult to deal with, or have difficulty with the manual. I hope this video can be of help.

    Thanks for this helpful video. Here’s a tip for a hidden feature I like called One Touch Turn Signal. It’s at Setup -> Vehicle-> Lights. You can set the turn signal to flash 3, 5, or 7 times when you quickly push and release the turn signal lever. Convenient for lane changes.

      The funny thing is that I had set it to 5 in my Niro EV, and did the same in my EV6, but never thought about it as a hidden feature, but it is a good idea to show. Thank you, I have added it to the list.

      My 2013 Škoda Roomster does that automatically! Still waiting to aquire my first ev, ideally a used e-Niro, and this is a really helpful video but why would you have to hunt for something like that? I'm old and not terribly tech savvy, hence being a bit of a grouch about these weird 'retrograde' steps. 🤔😅
      Cheers André. 👍

      @@judebrown4103 just to reasure you, the Niro EV does do it automatically, but you can adjust it from the default 3 to 5 or 7. I changed it from 3 to 5 in my Niro EV and also in my new EV6 😎

      @@EV-olution oh thanks André, I did think it seemed a bit odd. It's possible to change the number of repeats on the Roomster too, I believe, but I've never got around to it... really doesn't bode well for my transition to ev, does it?! Fortunately my wife seems to have a knack for tech as she uses a computer for work. I'm more the take it apart, fix it, put it back together with a screwdriver and a spanner type myself. 👍

      Thanks. I’ll go look. I also just discovered if you are in reverse with the mirrors dipped, you can actually adjust the amount of dip of each mirror independently, while in reverse mode. Super slick. I prefer my passenger side one dipped more so I can see the rear wheel. Handy for parallel parking to know how close to the kerb the wheel is. Cameras don’t really help in that situation.

      Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was away on vacation. Unfortunately the car does not have an auto-lock feature for the situation you describe; I wish it did. It does, however, lock the doors automatically if you unlock them and you don't open a door. Not a great consolation prize though. Hopefully Kia will implement an update that will add the feature.

      @@EV-olution Yes, the lack of Auto-Lock and also Approach Unlock on 2022 EV6 Wind is a big disappointment. My 2014 Cadillac ELR had these features, and they should be standard on a 2022 EV.

    Another hidden feature for the paddles. Works on the Niro and EV6 is the single use ‘auto hold’. When breaking of in complete standstill, hold the left paddle for 3 seconds and the car will remain in its position until you press the accelerator paddle. I find it useful in situation like traffic jams when you don’t want to use the auto-hold function all the time but just once.
    Good to see you back on RUclips. Your vids made me buy a Niro EV (MY21) 👌🏻 never going back to petrol, this is just so much more relaxed driving.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад +5

      I am glad my videos could help you choose an EV that suits your needs and congratulations on the Niro EV, it is an excellent vehicle. You are correct about the left paddle, the disadvantage is that the thing holding the vehicle in place is the electric motor (motors in the EV6) as opposed to the friction brakes, meaning the car will use battery power to hold the car in position. The other disadvantage is that the paddle hold version that holds the car does not keep the brake lights turned on when stopped at a light, whereas Auto Hold keeps the brake lights on.

This selection can be made by pressing on the climate/nav selection button for 3-5 seconds. This help ensure that you are not turning up the heat when you are turning up the volume. Good information. Most salesmen and woman don't know all the tricks in the car. When I ask how to do something they just sit in the car and play with things until they might figure it out. They should watch more RUclips.
    About the auto regen. What level is it in before sensing a time to brake for the car in front? I found the adjustment of the regen levels with the paddle shifters right at my fingertips a joy to use and was just tapping up to a higher level when I needed to slow down instead of using the brakes. LIke down shifting but better. It sounds like the auto setting might do this for me or I might enjoy the more active approach of doing it myself. What a great feature. Also I noticed that turning off regen was amazing as the car just cruises with little resistance whatsoever kind of like putting you ice car in neutral. Very fun.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +2

      Thank you very much. The Auto regen actually has levels, just like the manual regen settings, so you can adjust it to your liking. I am not sure what the distance is for the car detection. I prefer the manual setting to adjust as I see fit and, as you indicated, regen 0 is excellent for coasting and it it far more efficient to drive in 0 if you do not need to slow down.

      @@EV-olution do you have any more information about how turning off the regen range? I haven't heard anything about decoupling the front or back wheels on the ev6 for instance and since it costs so well I assume it's still using power from the batteries?

      @@jimji2774 the EV6 decouples the front motor automatically when in Eco and Normal mode. AWD is only active 100% of the time in Sport mode, or if you set regen to i-Pedal. If you set regen to i-Pedal then it is AWD in all modes, even Eco mode. The most efficient highway driving is in Eco, or Normal mode, with regen set to 0. In the city i-Pedal is excellent, except if on a larger boulevard with higher speeds, then I set the regen to 0 and coast most of the time.

Only works on the front windows in the ev6 but if it's a stinking hot day it's nice to be able to get some fresh cooler air into the car before you open the doors while you're approaching your car. Also convenient to be able to close the windows from inside your house if you look outside and see you've forgotten to do so.

    This was a really good video thanks for the info! Do you think having the regen in “auto” is the best way to use it and maximize battery?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад +3

      Thank you very much and thanks for watching. Regarding your question, I prefer to select the regen manually. When driving on the highway, or a secondary road where there are not many stops, I prefer regen at 0 so the car can coast for a long time without pressing the accelerator pedal. That is far more efficient than having regen on, even at 1, and pressing the pedal to maintain speed. It drives my wife nuts that I change the regen on the fly when needed, but it is far more efficient. Also to note, I use adaptive cruise control on the highway most of the time so regen settings are not relevant in that case.

  • @mikehedrick6544
    @mikehedrick6544 2 года назад +1

    André, with my Niro EV I typically have the regen set for auto and I still can vary the aggressiveness of the regen by using the paddles usually setting for one or two arrows. In auto regen the car uses the radar plate to automatically decrease the speed when the car I’m following slows down. If a car traveling at a slower speed than mine moves in my lane it will react to that situation. I prefer this auto regen in heavy traffic. Sometimes I just enable the adaptive cruise control and set it for minimum distance in heavy bumper to bumper traffic and the car pretty much takes care of the driving for me automatically relieving the driving stress. In the future I’d like to see a drive comfort and handling experience comparison of the two vehicles. Great videos as always!!!⚡️ ✅

    Someone in the UK reported on the EV6 "Car wash mode". Washing the EV6 with the fob in your pocket will constantly lock and unlock the doors as you walk around the vehicle. To prevent this and avoid having to wrap your fob in tin foil or putting the keys in the garage, press Lock, then Unlock, then press and Hold Unlock for a few seconds.

    We just got our EV6 3 days ago so it's all still very new.
    There is just one thing that I'm quite annoyed about. We live in a small remote area (islands) in Europe and the EV6 does not seem to have a Navigation Map. All we see is a black screen with the arrow icon that indicates us. The Coordinates seem to work and we can see it has satellite connections.
    When I tried one of their EV6 cars I just assumed that they hadn't updated the system on that car and it would be fine when we got our own. Went back the day after we got our car because I noticed it was still a black screen and talked to them, but the salesman just said "Kia doesn't have any Maps of our region so it doesn't work here... sorry. However, it does work just fine if you'd leave the country and have the car with you".
    It feels like a big letdown not being informed of that before buying the car. I had a Mercedes before this EV6 and that car had flawless navigation. If the model was really new I'd feel optimistic to have them add it soon but the model is over 2 years old now.

      Thank you, I am glad my videos are helpful. If your EV6 parking brake does not come on automatically when shifting to park, then your car is missing an update. I assume that you have a 2022 EV6 from before June 2022 and if you have Auto Hold active, and turn the car off, the parking brake will come on. Call your Kia service center and ask them to perform all the updates for your car. Make sure the recall updates are applied as well as all the technical service bulletin updates. You have to ask for certain TSBs for them to be done, so asking for all of them should cover you, if you have a good dealership and service person.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +2

      There are 0, 1, 2, 3 and i-Pedal regen levels in the EV6. i-Pedal is one pedal driving mode, but does not stay active when the car is powered off and back on; it drops to level 3 after a power off. MAX is what you get when you pull and hold the left regen paddle to stop the car, regardless of regen level you are in. You could be at level 0 and pull the left paddle which will slow and stop the car with max regen. I am not sure if the driver profile "remembers" the regen level, but I would take a wild guess that it will since it keeps things like radio station presets, ambient light color, mirror settings, etc. I have driven the Model 3 and Model Y and I can honestly say that I prefer the EV6 over both of them for my needs and preferences. I would have liked a bigger frunk, but I can live with the small one we get since the rest of the EV6 is pretty awesome.

    Plenty of extra hidden features:
    NSCC navigation based cruise control:
    When you enable CC then after 3 seconds the speed limit sign will blink. One press up/down as arrow says and you are at the speed limit. Works 3 seconds after passing any new speed limits as well. And you have 3 secs to react.
    If you set speed warning to +5 km/h then NSCC will snap to actual speed limit + the offset. Since my car shows 4km/h too much - +5 is close to perfect.
    Close windows with remote. Press and hold lock on remote.
    Auto Regen: you can increase Regen with paddle shifters. With nobody in front you can lower it to level 0 or 1 for long free roll. Lower than default.

    Hi Andre. Great video. I test drove the GT S line EV6 today as looking to replace my e-Niro like you did. In UK we have Air, GT line, GT S line and a GT model. The dealer told me about the EV9 that will be coming out! Have you found that you would like to do some tweaks to the EV6? e.g. you did a video about changing the bulbs to LED's for the e-Niro but look all LED in EV6. What about the reversing light? Is it powerful and LED? Also, I liked that fact you could turn off the VESS and therefore the reversing sound in the e-Niro because it would wake my neighbours when I left early in the mornings. I couldn't find the VESS control on the EV6. Do you have the optional heat pump? Is it needed? Was standard on e-Niro. Thanks

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад

      Thank you very much. There are a few small things that I will do, but the EV6 has really corrected things that the Niro EV did wrong. The reverse light is a central light and it is LED so no need for that. In North America there is no VESS button because it is required by law and we are not allowed to deactivate it. This may have influenced production everywhere if your version no longer has a VESS button. In Canada we get heat pump as standard in all trims except for the base RWD Standard Range which is the 45,000$ version to meet EV incentive requirements for price. The question of whether it is needed is a bit of a difficult question to answer. For some yes, for others no. If the range of the vehicle is sufficient for your requirements then the heat pump is irrelevant because the claimed range accounts for heating in winter. Think of the Bolt EV and EUV, they have never had a heat pump and it is fine. Would it be more efficient if it had one, yes, but the price would increase. I actually have a video about heat pumps and talk about this.

      Regarding your question about solar panels, this has been gone over at length and with the panels we have today, it makes no sense to use portable panels because you would need far too many to be of any real use in the real world. There are tons of articles and videos about the subject, but here is a reference that goes over the math (see link below). If you scroll half the way down the article, you get to the section called "How many solar panels will I need to charge just my EV?" and the example math they show that you would need 5.85 solar panels that generate 410W of power each to be of any real use.

    There's two other very useful features you haven't mentioned. 😊
    If you tap and hold on the area on the ventilation/media panel underneath the screens, where you shift between media and ventilation, you will after a few seconds get the option to choose which functionality you want to be shown as default.
    Choose one, tap on the panel, and see that it now automatically shifts back to your preferred layout after a few seconds. 😉
    Oh, and you can remove the screen protector on the panel too - and it's looking really nice and shiny underneath.
    I've done it myself on both my EV6's.
    Just use your fingernail to scratch on top on the right or left side of the panel.
    Don't get inpatient if it won't come off easily, you will succeed eventually - and the result is all worth it, I promise. 🤩👍🏻

      Thanks for the tap-and-hold tip, I have it listed for a future video.
      FYI, the film that you removed is not meant to be removed, it is permanent protection film for the touch panel and I don't suggest anyone try to remove it. If you have already done so it should not cause issues, but I strongly suggest leaving it in place as it is not meant to be taken off.

      @EV-olution Thank you for your answer.
      I would like to hear from where you get the information that the screen protector isn't meant to be removed - because my local Kia import does not list this as a problem at all.
      According to them, its just meant to prevent sticky fingers and dirt on the panel, and will have no effect on functionality or durability.
      Thank you.

      @EV-olution  6 месяцев назад +3

      @@OleIChristensen the film on the touch panel is stuck on quite well, is difficult to remove, and leaves an adhesive residue that needs to be cleaned off, which are all signs of a permanent film, not removeable. This question has been discussed in several Facebook groups over the last year, and although I do not have an official statement from Kia, the concensus is that the film is not removeable.

    Do you know of a way to switch the speedometer from the left to the right? For a left handed driver my hand blocks it when driving. Also is there a way to keep the car in ipedal mode with out having to set it each time?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад

      There is no way to swap the side the speedometer is on. Sorry. Also, iPedal cannot be made persistent, you have to activate it every time you start the car, but at least they fixed Auto Hold and that stays on 😎

    Thanks for this - picking mine up in a week and am trying to learn all the features ahead of time. Quick stupid (?) question - I will be getting the Wind AWD version. Can I use snow cables (SAE-S version, of course) on the car in bad snow conditions? Appreciate the feedback - looking forward to your other videos.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +1

      Hi Steve, congratulations on your purchase, you are going to love the EV6. I don't know about snow cables versus Kia restrictions per country, but I would suggest simply using quality winter certified winter tires, like the Nokian R5 EV, or the R3 SUV, the 10 EV, or the Continental VikingContact 7, Michelin X Ice, etc. Any quality winter tire should be more than good. I have watched several reviews of various tires and for my Niro EV I had the Nokian R3. This time, with my EV6, I have decided to give the old, but proven Continental VikingContact 7 tire a try. I am downsizing to a more narrow 19 inch wheel and tire, but you can go as small as 18 inch wheels and tires on the EV6. FYI, I have a few EV6 videos and product reviews out already. I hope you like them and thanks for watching 😎

    Another feature. The EV Niro rear mats always rode up and crumpled when passengers would ride in the back seats.
    The EV6 has rear mat anchors that eliminate this issue altogether.

      I noticed the rear mat anchors in the EV6, but since I had Tuxmat mats in my Niro EV I never had the issue you mention. Good to know. Thanks.

      Does the Max regen setting come back after the car is cycled on and off? I do like that aspect of the Auto regen feature and have been using Auto level 3 now and find the consistent behavior comfortable.

    • @EV-olution

      Max regen only comes on when you hold the left paddle. It will slow the car and stop it when held. Once you release the paddle it goes back to the level you had selected.

    Thanks for the tips. I hope these tips are also working with a German version of the EV6. I will get my one in about 2 weeks...... I hope that the air distrubution is programable. In my Kona the air always comes from bottom, mid and window. I hate the air in the middle blowing in my face. Even after the update, on the screen it is nearly not visible which position is selected. Ok, it is a Hyundai, hope that Kia is smarter. LG Bernd

    Most vehicle drivers on the road drive night/day.
    Very few (?) reviewers discuss/demonstrate a vehicle's exterior lighting performance as viewed from in/out of the vehicle.
    How does the KIA EV6 perform?
    Your out-takes continue to provide excellent entertainment.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад +1

      You are correct, I don't know of any reviewers that show the night time lighting. I will have to make an EQ episode about it. The headlights are fine. Some people have complained that the LED projector headlights are not good, but coming from the Niro EV that had excellent LED headlights I can say that the EV6 headlights are decent. They are not as good as the Niro EV, but still more than adequate for night time driving.

    First major negative (in Canada anyway) . I have found the EV6 Nav system to be untrustworthy and no longer use it without at least a Google enabled phone as a back up. I have found it miss a simple destination altogether and then lead me around multiple blocks of turns past the destination to take me back to it. On another occasion it called for a left turn two blocks in advance of the major corner charging/gas station destination and selected a long route through a residential area to end up on the opposite side of the median at the gas/EV charging station. The worst case was picking a longer route to a location then when the longer route was intentionally passed for a shorter one (a one block route to the left) the "revised route" called for multiple right turns to place the vehicle back on the original (longer) route.
    The EV Niro Nav system was far, far more reliable.
    How does one ind out if the Nav system has a higher North American/Canadian version available that might be a fix.?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад +2

      There is a navigation update that should fix your issues and it is completely free. The problem is that the latest update was taken offline due to a minor bug (that I and others are experiencing) and will be back online on the 12th of May according to what has been read. You can see how to download and perform the update with this video that I made: ruclips.net/video/DuB6kdvNT1k/видео.html

    You may have missed this one. There are remote releases for the rear seat backs. Loading something long into the trunk area? You don't have to walk around to the rear doors to lower the rear seats. There are levers on the side of the trunk area that lower the rear seats.

    • @EV-olution

      If you have scheduled charging configured in your car, and you need to charge outside of the "allowed" time, plug in the car then simply press and hold the button for 3 seconds, and the car will ignore the charging schedule for that session.
