  • I love ICE cars. I love engines, exhaust noises, manual transmissions, etc. On the other hand, I've spent 2 years with the Kia EV6. In this video, I not only wanted to focus on 2-years with this specific car, but also 2 years as an EV owner: An EV owner who still holds a special place in his heart for ICE cars. So should you get an EV6/Electric car? I cover the following topics:
    My car history (not an EV nut!)
    Interior wear and tear
    Exterior wear and tear
    Battery Life and Range
    Home and public charging
    Issues/Quirks
    Unsung heroes/underappreciated items about EV6/EVs

    my ICCU and 12 volt failed. it took the dealer where i broke down in a neighboring town 3 weeks to get the new ICCU and get car back to me. i had a loaner. despite the problem i love my EV6. it’s one of the better looking EVs out there. i love the ride. i’m only on 1 year but it’s a keeper. and my Ice is a Solara Ragtop. my last kia was the Soul Gt turbo. i consider my EV6 a fun car

      The ev6 is def a fun car. I love driving it, and I love the way it looks. Your experience with the ICCU was exactly what I was referring to in my video. It's not the worse but it's not great. At least you had a loaner! Some people struggle to get that or even get reimbursed.

    I have had my 2022 EV6 for 6 months now. I love it.
    I would not recommend buying any new car at this time.
    This one is used (lease return) and I saved $20,000. Mileage was 17K.
    I am 67 and do not think I will ever need any other car till I hang up my keys when I get too old.
    What could change my mind on buying another EV?
    1. New battery tech with 500-1000 mile range.
    2. Or perhaps I would add a GM EV Brightdrop van for RV camping ,if it had a 500 mile range. Current range is just over 300 and the plug is in the back. This would not replace EV6 just add a new RV for guilt free road trips. Could also be a Mercedes eSprinter or Ford EV Van or if one of the new KIA EV Vans became available.

    Having owned a Kia ICE car, the only issue I had was the dealership experience and lack of aftermarket support.
    An EV ties you to the dealer more so than a gas car, so having a great and knowledgable service department is key for any EV.
    I am not convinced that KIA corporate is doing right by the dealers to get them trained nor am I confident that dealers are taking this seriously.
    EVs are better suited by the Tesla model of direct from manufacturer and no franchise stores.

      Although I agree that Kia isn't doing that great at it, I have been to dealer way less in 2 years than I normally would. If it weren't for the amp recall, I would have only been 2x since I got the car. Now I avoid dealerships like the plague anyway. I agree. Dealership model needs to go away, at least the way it's setup now as a money machine.

    I have the ev6 air, base model in the UK. I have had it since Feb 2022 and put on 64k miles. No issues with the car since the software updates in the first few months. Everything is holding together very well and drives like new. I have not noticed any battery degradation but I have not done a specific test. I have done long drives 4000 miles going to the arctic circle in Norway no problem at all. I think ccs charging in Europe is well organised. Tesla moved to ccs over here.
    I plan to do a coast to coast trip in the US next year but think I will use a Tesla as the ccs charging in the US is just not there yet.
    Also enjoyed it on the autobahns and find it handles the acceleration to over 100 mph very easily no sign.

    Subwoofer is OK. I have plenty of deep bass. You don't need to replace anything.
    Press “media” touch button and select “Custom” sound setting.
    In the menu, select "Sound settings".
    Select “Premium Sound” and “Meridian Horizon Customization”.
    Set the Meridian Horizon:
    Stereo: 1
    Immersion: 1
    Set Meridian Intelli-Q:
    Normal
    Set “Position” four steps back:
    B = -4 (minus 4)
    L = H
    Adjust the "Equalizer" so that the treble and midrange are muted and the bass is raised:
    Treble: -2 (minus 2)
    Midtone: -1 (minus 1)
    Bass: +4 (or to taste)

      Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it all. The only thing that was a saving grace was Poweramp. It's artificial enhancement but sounds so much more full with it optimized. If the settings above work for you, that's good to hear. I'll give those exact settings a shot but I've messed with all of that before.

    • @pfavr
      @pfavr Месяц назад +1

      @@Emadifications I thought ny system was broken before I tried the above settings. I even complained to Kia. Now I'm really happy. The sub is shaking the car - it plays really deep and tonally perfect (thanks to the DSP and optimization). The "kick" comes mostly from the side door speakers - the sub plays only sub.
      Looking at the driver tells you nothing. You don't need an 18" to play bass (although that would be louder).
      I've heard that some Kia amplifiers were faulty. Maybe yours were too?

    to the low coolant - mine went also low after couple of first battery preconditioning. the problem is (i think), in factory they fill it as expected. but after it flows into the system it gets a little bit lower. The dealer said it can cause a problem after hundert of thousands of kilometers at the earliest, so no worry at all. He just filled the coolant for free when i went for one of the updates. I made 20k km after that and the coolant stayed at the same place without dropping low.

The EV 3 is probably coming but it’s ll be too little to late for me, as it’s about the size of a Soul and that’s the only reason I moved on from the Soul. I wonder if they made something about the KW V3s that only works with the GT. I imagine you should be able to use them on any AWD model of the ev6. Is yours rwd? Or they may just have developed it on a GT so they can't confirm if it will fit other awd models.

    Not sure I agree with your stance on ICE vehicles in general. I think the fully EV market has opened to a wider selection available in May 2024. Also unlike your stated comfort level for ICE based road trips I have found no issues driving 15K miles so far back and forth between the coasts with a 2024 Lyriq using CCS only DC fast charging. I plan to swap out my ICE work truck later this year for a BEV pick up model to complete my transition off ICE (My 2010 truck is ready for replacement). I think the driver experience is better overall with a BEV and the use case for ICE based vehicles in this US market is becoming less and less.

    • @Emadifications
      @Emadifications  Месяц назад

      I agree with what you're saying. You can do a road trip across the country, but it's def a bit more stressful, esp the first few times, with an EV. I even struggle trying to find good infrastructure leaving DFW and going east to Shreveport. There are def areas that are still lacking compared to other, but geographically, the US is huge, so that's expected. So I'm not saying it's not possible, I think I'm just at a point where I'd be planning the crap out of it, esp if my family was with me. You can't detour and change routes last min, etc.

    • @Emadifications

      As for ice vs EV, I love EVs. I want to drive a Mach e GT or a taycan, Audi e Tron GT and really feel what they are like. My next purchase, if I could right now, would be an ioniq5n. But I think I will always have a gas car in my garage. Not cause I'm hardcore ICE, but because I need something to tinker with and get mad at. And I need a manual transmission in my house. I also do "fun drives" 2-3x a week in my ice cars, just rowing through gears, etc. so in my household, EVs make perfect daily drivers. But my weekend fun car, at least till the tech from an ioniq5n goes to a small EV hatchback or roadster, will remain ice.

    Coming from a B8.5 platform myself! (Someone totaled my parked car last week) Wonder if you can answer one or any of these
    1. Have you noticed any issues with the phantom braking? I saw some forums with this issue for 2021 models.
    2. Have you used it in the snow? If so how does it handle?
    3. You very briefly mentioned polestar, if you have looked into them, why would you recommend the ev6 over it? I have the opportunity for a performance model of the Polestar and it is only roughly $20 more a month than the EV6 but i how open the EV6 feels in comparison.

    Hello from Houston! I just watched your 1 year video last night and here’s your 2 year video. Perfect timing! I’m between the EV6 and a Mach E. Kia has some incredible deals right now, you aren’t kidding. They have 0% APR for 60 months and low rates for the other monthly options. For this reason and it seems that Ford has cut some options from the Mach E, I’m leaning towards the EV6. The 12v issue does concern me. This will be an around town/commuter car. Does the error code come up while driving? Or, just while the care is stationary? Also, being that you are also in TX is your insurance for your EV6 reasonable? You mentioned that your registration was $200-$300 in the last video. Have you registered this year? If so, did it go up?

    • @Emadifications
      @Emadifications  Месяц назад +1

      Hey fellow Texan! Thanks for checking the videos out. I think the Mach e is one of the only other few EVs I would consider. So I think for me it would come down to test driving and seeing what feels better. I hate the single iPad style screen in the middle of the Mach e, but that's not a massive deal breaker.
      As for the 12v, there's plenty of fixes now, so I wouldn't let that deter you. I mean mine lasted 2 years with no issues, and now that the ICCU recall is out, 12v battery issues should be minimized.
      Lastly, def test drive an AWD. Also, don't discount a used ev6. The prices are pretty insane, as EVs are losing value so make sure if you buy new, it's a good deal. Cause depreciation is hitting them hard. You may save thousands buying slightly used.

    About 12v battery issues....I'm seeing this trend with other EVs and Hybrids. Guessing the old 12V batteries don't do well in an electrified setup. Even ICE cars go through them around 3-4 years and when they fail, it's sudden.

    there is no car in the world that will give you the same acceleration as an EV, when my iccu died I got a chevy malibu and boy did I despised that car, the only good thing was the android auto wireless 🤣My only disappointment is infrastructure in general is not there yet, Like people that lives in apartment complex, depending on management, they will accommodate a plug for your charger, but in other places you need to rent those garages and charge at 1kwh

      Yeah driving regularly in an EV for every day tasks spoils you. I've been in a house since I bought an EV, but see my friends and family that live in apartments charge level 1, which is slow but can work depending on your commute. There is something satisfying about smooth acceleration, no noises, etc sometimes. I like engine noises,but I also love low maintenance.

      I charge level 1 at home. It works with my 50 mile commute. It's never full after charging overnight, but gas drivers don't expect that anyway.
      My other rides are two Zero electric motorcycles and two gas Honda motorcycles. My girlfriend has a Honda Fit. The newer Zero, the SR/F is still my favorite.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the common charge port overheating problem when home charging. How many amps are you charging at? My ioniq5 originally would charge faithfully at 40 A but I’ve had to cut it back to 32 A to avoid overheating the charge port and shutting down the charge process. Hyundai seems to have no solution and it’s making a lot of people really aggravated. Of course this does not affect DC charging.

    • @Emadifications
      @Emadifications  Месяц назад +1

      Interesting..haven't heard this as much on the ev6. My charger charges at around 38 A and never have had a problem. I honestly didn't know this was an issue still. I remember hearing a bit of it a while back. What kwH do you get at 32 vs 40?

    • @jdlutz1965
      @jdlutz1965 22 дня назад

      Amps X Volts = Watts, so 32 x 240 = 7,680 watts or 7.7 kWs, still relatively fast.

      SC311 was issued as a correction for this. While it's better than the previous fix (which would ramp pretty hard from 40amps to 23-25 amps), it still ramps down slowly over time. I'm still testing all the options, but when it's hot in the garage I need to point a fan at the charge port to keep the charge rate high enough to finish my charge between midnight and 6am for the cheapest power.
      It's also related to the charger, I have a Juicebox 40 and it seems to be one of the worst offenders.

    Can you discuss the home charging cost and what impact that has had to your normal electric bill? Does it cost $5 per full charge and how does it compare to unleaded gas fill-ups?

    • @Emadifications
      @Emadifications  20 дней назад +1

      So I switched, recently, to a plan with free nights on electric. Of course, it's not totally free. I still pay an energy "delivery fee", but it's a lot cheaper at night than it is during the day. For numbers, let's just use $.23/kW (.18 electric rate + .05 delivery rate) daytime and $.05/kw (just delivery rate) night time. If I'm at 20% and charge to 80% during the day, it's about $11. At night, it costs me $2.30 to go to 80%. Going to 100%, it's about $14.26 daytime and $3.10 night time. These usually get me between 210-250 miles each.
      I "power up" 3-4x a month. Worst case, it costs me about $44-50 to drive about 1k miles a month but now that I'm only charging at night, $12/month to drive 1,000 miles average. I hope this makes sense. It really just depends on your rate.
      Good news is, with the free nights, we also use our other appliances all at night (laundry, dishwasher, AC is lower than normal temp, etc.).

    Just bought ours 2023 GT Line, never been happier.
    We live in Mississippi, infrastructure sucks, we have to use our home charger level two which is good we use it just for commute back-and-forth to work. No big deal.
    The magic docks are not available in this state yet I don’t understand..
    Lots of Tesla lots of EV’s around, but Tesla is not putting any magic docks in the places, and we don’t have any America charging network in our state at all our infrastructure is very bad..
    But we knew that when we bought it, we would charge from our house
    I guess there’s only a couple states around us that don’t have much infrastructure so no big deal..
    Give it 2 more years, will be good on EVs on the infrastructure, especially if we keep the same present who’s in right now..

      I don't particularly like the look of the ioniq6. So that's why I wouldn't get it. But if your main concern is lease price, I heard ioniq6 has really good lease deals. If you don't care about looks and youre leasing, I'd say whichever is better for your budget. But if you're buying and like the look of the ev6 more, I'd buy the ev6. I wouldn't buy the ioniq6 cause resale may be even worse than the ev6. Only lease the ioniq6.

    A couple simple facts, per ev otr there is already more publicly available charging than there is gas pumps per ice vehicle otr.
    Also 85% of new car buyers in the U.S. were homeowners with well into the six figure household incomes and financed the majority of the principle amount for their vehicle purchase of choice in 2023. 2024 so far is tracking similiarily.
    Pre pandemic this percentage was still close to 80% of all new car buyers. So new cars haven't been for the lower incomes for a long long long time now, all the way back to the 70s&80s. Which is why the used car market is 3-5x the volume annually vs new.
    So with ev adoption sadly hovering between 8-10% here in ass backwards oil soaked America? We don't need to worry about any apt and condo dwellers for at least another 3-5 year's. I'd say 5+again sadly.
    As charging plans are taking 2-4 year's to implement? Start those programs around 2026/27 to ad a lot of condo&apt chargers.
    Per sources anyone can research 85-90+% of ALL ev charging is being done at home or work places, while shopping at the gym, eating etc! 👍🏻
    And make ready laws are already in many states requiring pre wired lvl1 or 2 charging spots+other states are passing laws barring the property owners from denying ev charging access&installation to the tenants. 😎
    In Cali who leads the nation in evs. Having an ev charger available gets your home sold faster. Other slower lower iq flyover states will come to this simple realisation hopefully someday soon. Considering where the battery cell plants are being built&ev factories it's bound to become self evident by around 2030 maybe even sooner. 😀

    EVs are electric appliances. They will depreciate, like cell phones. While it's possible to repair them, they're being treated like cell phones, by manufactures. Broken units, will tend to be replaced, instead of repaired. China has huge EV grave yards, full of almost new, and new EVs, that were scraped, instead of repaired. Several Ionic 5 owners, have been quoted over $50,000 for replacement batteries. Small fender benders can easily cost more, than the vehicle is worth. EV's true costs to it's owners, is depreciation. The inflation, this is going to cause, will be dramatic. Buy your home, first, before you think about getting an EV. If you really have to have one, it's best to pay cash, and lucky dip the used market. Just remember, they will not stop depreciating, until they're scraped. The cost of scrapping the will also be high. If you're not rich...just stay away from them. In an inflationary environment, own assets. Don't be angry at how much it cost to buy a home. It's cause is "transition" based inflation. Homes will likely double in value every 5 years, from now on. Buy one while you young, and have the energy to pay for it. That'll make the difference between being able to care for your family, or ultimately living in your car. Make good financial decisions. The "transition" is going cause 20 or 30 years of very high inflation. Even if they stopped this tomorrow, it would take 20 years to recover our financial footing. The rich people driving this, don't care as their assets, will only go up.

      Jesus fuck you anti ev people are so fucking stupid, an ev is more reliable then any gas engine, and the batteries have already more then proven that they'll last a very very long time, these aren't the shitty batteries in your crapple phone 5, these have proper thermal management systems, there are tons of high mileage examples that still have almost 0 battery degradation, stop spreading bullshit you read on Facebook or fox News
      Oh, and as for depreciation, ice cars are depreciating just as fast, because cars have literally always depreciated ASAP, 99% of cars lose 50% of their value the instant you drive it off the lot, what happened during covid was NOT NORMAL, the way cars are once again depreciating IS NORMAL
