  • There is an achievement in HyperRogue for destroying 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 leaves of a Mutant Ivy. So today we will show that this is indeed possible.

    Idea for a challenge mode for players: Start the game with an invincible Mutant Ivy right next to you that will begin expanding in 16 turns. The Mutant Ivy cannot be within 100 tiles of the Orb of Yendor, nor within 100 tiles of Camelot, nor anything else that'd make 100%ing the game impossible. Safety Orbs stop the Mutant Ivy and allow it to be killed, instead of teleporting you away. After the 5 turns are up, the Mutant Ivy becomes invincible again and 16 turns after that, the Mutant Ivy begins growing. You cannot destroy the center of the Mutant Ivy even with a safety Orb. Every orb becomes 2x more effective except for the following:
    Safety Orbs (see above)
    Any Orb that harms (cannot kill the invincible mutant ivy except with Safety Orb)

    This game has shown an eldritch being can exist unexpected in games otherwise not meaning to be made entirely. it exists purely by mistake, but it shows no visible sign of sentience. it grows, and grows ever faster and ever larger than can be seen. it could be possible that it has even created its own neural network, consisting of the parts of its body that fire very similarly to neural cells. this makes it possible that it could be even communicating with other Mutant Ivy's nearby, possibly even making it its own intelligent lifeform, with only one singular purpose. to grow. to feed. to expand. to colonize. and sooner or later, become the universe that had once created it. it shows unremarkable power, seeing the amount of space it takes up is almost near infinite, but is only still a grain of sand compared to its entire universe. when will people meddle with the wrong buttons, the wrong code, and suddenly create something that can exist past its erasure. something like fungus, something that can infect and spread, without any identification as to where it had come from, or possibly even go. then the sudden realization hits you. this monster, this thing... it can spread in multiple directions, so while you are getting rid of one small branch, millions or billions of other tendrils will seep into everything else there is, suddenly growing so much ever stronger, if only this Ivy, or... Whatever it is, could reproduce and spread multiple cores... if only it could do that... and communicate with eachother... we would have a massive problem. This begs the question, does something horribly nasty and impossible like this exist already in the real world? if so, where? it would only be a matter of time until we would be taken over... unless we already have been taken over, and this oh-so magnificent universe, is just this one being, playing its own game, letting us thrive, the REAL real world, its multiple consciences pounding into ours, putting us into this biosimulation of absolute terror, while it continues to feed on our feelings, to feel our life like it was its own. this one, this being, it is the "Puppet-Master", and death is not the last experience they will make us feel, they will keep us alive, but not to torture us. to use us as puppets in its own universe, keeping us for its own roleplay, where it is its own life, and it is its own death. it only chooses between the two, making its drama, or play, or show. just so it can feel something, so it can feel everything. we are not trapped by the Puppet-Master. We are the Puppet-Master, all of us, just one connected being, starring its own puppets in its own theatre, millions of universes, quattuordecillions of souls, and an infinite amount of time. What do you... no, "We" think?

    I have a two questions.
    How much math's involved in HyperRogue code and if u have any degrees in math

    • @ZenoRogue
      @ZenoRogue  Год назад +14

      Quite a lot: other than school mathematics, it involves linear algebra, differential geometry, topology, finite fields, algebra (groups and finite fields), automata theory, probability, combinatorics, graph theory, algorithmics, differential equations (ODE/PDE), and more. I do have degrees in both mathematics and CS.

      @@torgo_ I think I have listed PDEs because of (the discrete variant of) the heat equation used in the Icy Land. So not that much PDEs (probably why it was listed last).

    Does this thing have an actual center?

    • @headcrab4
      @headcrab4 Год назад +5

      A theoretical "Ideal point" does exist within the center of the land, but that point itself is infinitely deep within the horocycle the land encompasses. So while you will get closer and closer to the "center" and the numbers of leaves you destroy will become increasingly larger and larger, the distance you travel and the number of leaves you destroy will always be finite.
      I believe that this means that while a "center" exists theoretically, in practice there isn't a possibility to ever see it. There (probably) isn't even a way to spawn at the center for the same reason we can't ever know what the last digit of pi would be. Keep in mind; asking what the last digit of pi is is a flawed question. Math gets a little strange when dealing with infinity, even moreso when hyperbolic geometry is thrown into the mix.
      Of course, I might be completely wrong in my understanding. If I am wrong, I'm totally happy to learn more about this strange field of math if the dev has insights for us.
